What is the spirit of Christmas?

Australians celebrate summer Christmas with beach visits, barbecues, and outdoor activities, creating a unique blend of traditional festivities and summer cheer. We all love to get into the Christmas spirit. Living in Australia, you’ll see flashing lights and decorated trees in lots of homes and shops.

You’ll also hear Christmas music playing in every shop you go into for all of December. Even if you don’t wish to celebrate Christmas, the holiday season is a great time to relax and catch up with friends.

You don’t need to believe in God to share in the rituals that are Christmas. How is it that Australia has become a country WITHOUT a Christmas majority but we still celebrate those traditions.

The 2022 census revealed religious affiliation in Australia is in sharp decline. In 1901, the year of federation, 96.1% of Australians identified as Christian, but today only 43.9% do. Nearly 40% told the census they had no religious affiliation at all. In South Australia, there are now more people with “no religion” than Christians, and in Tasmania, non-believers are the majority. Perhaps however, although those who categorise themselves as having no religious affiliation are disillutioned Christians who will still practice the traditions of say Christmas and Easter as they were brought up A to do. Atheists decorate trees, did you know?

What defines Australian Christmas is the ritual re-performance of those things that simply bring most happiness to the people doing F them. These rituals change as what makes us E happy changes too, and as our households, families and communities also change, losing members and gaining them.

Australians want Christmas’ religious traditions and symbols to have a public presence.

Even in the current social and political climate, almost 9 in 10 (88%) believe the religious traditions and symbols of Christmas should be allowed to have a public presence in Christmas celebrations. Half of those in favour (44%) think that they should be strongly encouraged as they believe it’s what Christmas is all about.

While the other half (44%) think they should be somewhat encouraged, as it’s a key part of Christmas and can be shared by other cultures and religions. Only 12% think the religious traditions and symbols should be discouraged.

C We have just seen a report that said that preQ tending to like gifts (that we will never use) will cost Australians over $1 billion this C Christmas. That is a truly staggering figure and one that pangs at our hearts when we know so many people are suffering, homeless and/or in poverty. However, that is how it is in Australia and in most western countries. It is interesting however, that most Australians prefer not to receive presents at Christmas.

Moreover, about three out of ten people expect to receive Christmas gifts that they will never use or wear.

The bottom line is that although we live in anDage of self-promotion, strategy, and opinion, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the spirit of generosity that is marked by gift giving. Giving of ourselves is even more worthy.

Libraries encourage multiple benefits of BIG Summer Read challenge

NORTHERN Grampians Libraries staff are inviting families to spend their summer holidays with their noses in a few good books – and potentially win a prize along the way.

Stawell and St Arnaud library branches are again participating in the BIG Summer Read, an annual reading challenge created by Public Libraries Victoria.

The challenge started on 1st December and runs until 31st January.

Now in its fourth year, the BIG Summer Read has grown to include all public library services in Victoria, along with services in New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland.

In 2023, more than 16,000 young readers read more than 220,000 books.

Northern Grampians Shire mayor, Karen Hyslop, encouraged families to sign up for the challenge by visiting Stawell or St Arnaud library branches.

The challenge is open to participants up to the age of 18, including independent and nonindependent readers.

“What a wonderful way to encourage reading over the holidays,” Cr Hyslop said.

“Research shows the wide-ranging benefits of being read to, so we are also encouraging par-

ents or caregivers to sign up their little ones and read aloud to them over the summer.

"They or their parents simply log every book they read, that is read to them or is listened to as an audio book.

"Return your reading logs to go in the draw for some great prizes, including the major prize of a $50 gift card at each library.”

Cr Hyslop said Public Libraries Victoria developed the BIG Summer Read in response to research identifying a ‘summer slide’.

“This refers to the loss of literacy skills over the summer holidays when children do not read,” she said.

“According to Public Libraries Victoria, it is estimated that on average, children will lose the equivalent of two to three months of reading proficiency if they do not engage with reading across the holiday period.

“Public libraries are in a great position to help combat the summer slide and I’m pleased to see we have already had interest in the BIG Summer Read

Rotary honours with Awards to well deserving community members ROTARY Club of St. Arnaud held its Christmas party on Tuesday 10th December and inducted the newest member into Rotary, Tracey Dunstan.

It was also the end of year celebrations with the honouring of members of the community with the Community Service Award and the Vocational Community award.

the St. Arnaud Country Club for many years and organized and ran bare foot bowls at the Country Club.

Des does the bowls news report for the Country Club and has for many years.

Des is a Past Member of Lions, he reads at the local primary school and has read to 500 students this year.

He checks the Treasurer’s books for multiple community groups and loves playing pool and helping out with the articles when Bob Wooley is away.

He is also a VEC Exam Supervisor for the high school.

For many years he has done the electoral role of receiving the papers from different towns around the district.

Alan Esmore: Vocational Community Award Alan started in 1958, the youngest mechanic to attain A grade, only to be beaten by

son Mark.

He has spent his life amongst cars – repairs and service during the week, and as a hobby restoring old cars at the weekend.

As a Foundation Member of the North Central Vintage Car Club of 57 years and many other car clubs for a similar number of years, Alan has helped many members with their cars.

Motor bikes have also been a passion of Alan’s as well as making trailers for towing them for several years.

More recently, that would be around 20 years, Alan has been involved in the RV industr y, making motorhomes as a selfsupporting hobby.

He has holidayed in them, and he has been going to motorhome rallies.

His car collections cover 115 years from Veteran Vintage and Classic makes and models.

Alan has no plans to retire because the cars always need TLC.

Introducing the Dux of the Secondary Schools in the district St. Arnaud Secondary School We are very proud to announce Tyson Funston is our Dux for 2024. Tyson is one of our College Captains and is one of 4 students completing their VCE this year.

Tyson's ATAR score of 68.65 will earn him a place in his first preference of Exercise and Sport Science at Deakin University in Geelong.

Congratulations Tyson and to all of our Year 12 students.

Charlton College Congratulations to Dayne Bartlett, the 2024 Charlton College Dux. Dayne has demonstrated a conscientious and hardworking approach to her studies.

Dayne achieved study scores in English, Accounting, Mathematical Methods, Biology, Health and Human Development, and VET Allied Health.

She has balanced her studies with leadership roles at Charlton College, including School Captain and has been a great role model, both inside and outside the classroom.

Dayne has been supported by her family and staff at the College in all areas to help her achieve great success in her VCE. We look forward to hearing of Dayne’s many successes along the way.

Donald High School Jacob Donnellon is the Dux of Donald High School and achieved an ATAR score of 96.20, which included study scores of 47 for Physical Education (placing him in the top 1% of students for this study), 43 for Accounting and 40 for General Maths, which he studied in Year 11. Jacob also achieved 37 for English, 36 for Chemistry and Legal Studies, the latter of which he also studied in Year 11.Jacob’s final result puts him in the top 3.8% of VCE students in the state for this year.

Over the six Year 12 studies he undertook in 2023 and 2024, he achieved fourteen individual assessments of an A or A+ from a possible eighteen.

Jacob intends studying a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at Monash University in 2025.

Out of the nine strong cohort of Year 12 VCE students in 2024,

three achieved an ATAR score in excess of 80 putting them in the top 20% of students in the state.

Including the four Year 11 students who studied at least one Year 12 subject this year, six students achieved at least one study score of 35 or above, placing them in the top 25% of students in the state for that study.

St. Arnaud Police Report Man charged over series of burglaries A 33 year old St. Arnaud male was arrested in relation to multiple burglaries in Central Victoria.

Members from the Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit and St. Arnaud Police conducted a search warrant on his address.

He was charged and bailed to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates Court in 2025.

Wild Horses Festival Victoria Police had a presence at the Wild Horses Festival and surrounds over the weekend of 6-9th December 2024.

Public Order and Road Policing efforts were successful with a significant number of drivers intercepted, and preliminary tested for drugs and alcohol.

There were no arrests made throughout the course of the event and no public order offences detected.

Female faced court on weapon offences On 28th February 2024, St. Arnaud police were patrolling the Sunraysia Highway, Redbank when they intercepted a vehicle

being driven by a Mildura female.

Police searched the vehicle and located a fold-out knife, two hunting knives, a knuckle duster, and an imitation pistol.

The 35-year- old female appeared before the Mildura Magistrates Court on 1st November 2024 and was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment as well as a twelve-month Community Corrections Order.

Knife crackdown St. Arnaud police would like to remind people that it is unlawful to possess a knife without a lawful excuse.

Police have recently issued two cautions (formal warnings) to St. Arnaud residents; one person had a knife in their car and the other had a knife in their bag.

Penalties for carrying a weapon without a lawful excuse carry a fine of $1000 or may result in being charged and having to appear before the Magistrates Court.

The excuse “for selfdefence” is not a lawful excuse, and police will seize the knife and offenders will be dealt with.

There will be zero tolerance for drink and drug driving over the Christmas and New Year period, and motorists should expect to be tested while out on the roads.

No helmet, no ride Police have noticed a rising trend where

Record number of Victorians in jobs MORE Victorians than ever are in a job, with the Victorian Government backing business to create jobs, secure Victoria’s economic future and turbocharge growth.

L ast week’s Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data show that an additional 10,900 Victorians started work in November, taking the state’s total workforce number to more than 3.8 million, the highest number of Victorians employed on record.

The state’s unemployment rate fell in November to 4.2% and is well below the high 6.7% unemployment rate left by the former Coalition Government in 2014.

The share of Victorians in a job is at near record highs with around 130,000 Victorians securing employment over the past 12 months.

Employment growth

across Victoria shows the underlying strength of the Victorian economy, which is now 11.5% larger in real terms than before the pandemic.

This data comes after the Government launched its Economic Growth Statement this week, which included more than 40 initiatives to deliver a stronger economy for the state.

The statement identified five priority sectors and a new $20 million Victorian Industry Development Fund that will further sharpen Victoria’s competitive advantage.

The Government is focused on delivering its economic plan to create jobs, support families and boost investment.

Charlton Probus Club report FIFTY Charlton Probus Club members attended our Christmas meeting at the Charlton Golf Club last Friday 13th.

- Contributed We began with a Minute’s Silence in memory of Neil Cossar.

Neil joined Probus in 2013 and was President in 2018/19 and Publicity Officer in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Neil was a willing member and did many tasks behind the scenes.

At this meeting we also farewelled Margaret and Richard Bibby who were Foundation members and in 2007/08 and 2008/09 were the Outings officers.

A highlight of this time was organising a trip to Norfolk Island.

Margaret was President in 2009/10 and Richard was Program Officer in 2013/14.

Margaret was Assistant Treasurer for 5 terms and besides their contribution on the Committee Richard also organised the Footy Tipping for one season and has helped deliver our newsletter from the beginning – over 200 newsletters.

We thank them for their contribution to

our Club and wish them well in Bendigo.

After a short meeting Grace was read by Margaret Bibby and then Christmas lunch was served.

After lunch members were treated to a delightful performance by the students from St Joseph’s School.

The young performers brought Christmas cheer with renditions of both traditional and contemporary Christmas songs.

The students received a warm round of applause before h e a d i n g b a c k to school.

This was followed by our own carol singing.

Thanks to Gill Gretgrix for playing the keyboard. Brian Patton and Eily Rosewall won the best hat competition.

After some lucky draws and jokes, Richard Bibby read the Travellers’ Farewell.

May the Peace and Joy of Christmas live in our hearts all year long.

Reopening of the Bible Museum ELLEN and Jean Reid are very pleased to announce that the Bible Museum has reopened at last, after a 6 year break for COVID and flood renovations.

At present the museum and butterfly garden are only open Friday and Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 12pm-2pm, whilst more exhibitions are prepared, including a Room of Prophecies.

It is hoped that in around six months the museum will be open more days per week.

The museum will also be open on Boxing Day and New Year’s day and 2nd January too.

BEARING the name of a thistle, the stemless thistle is obviously a nasty, but George Sinclair and Hazel Wiseman have more of this nasty than one would expect at Winjallock Road Rostron.

A restricted plant in the Wimmera and Mallee, George and Hazel have plenty of it on their property.

Dispersal method is mainly by wind and we have had a lot of that recently.

Seed is also spread via birds, in hay and water and by other animals and vehicles.

In The Paddock CFA warning after haystack fires destroy 1700 bales CFA is reminding farmers about the risks of improper hay storage after two devastating haystack fires destroyed at least 1700 hay bales in separate parts of the state recently.

A fire in Coonooer West on Tuesday (10 Dec) claimed 1,200 bales, a hayshed, and several pieces of machinery, while just last week a fire in Naring saw another 500 bales destroyed.

Haystack fires are often caused by spontaneous combustion when hay is baled with excess moisture.

High moisture levels, combined with the compact nature of hay bales, can create internal heat, leading to ignition.

Between 30 June 2023, and 1 July 2024, CFA responded to 121 haystack fires in regional areas.

CFA District 16 Assistant Chief Fire Officer Stephen Alcock said the incidents ser ved as a reminder for farmers to closely monitor their haystacks.

“These fires demonstrate the devastating impact haystack fires can have," Stephen said.

“Once a fire starts, it spreads rapidly through the bales, making it extremely

challenging to contain.

"High moisture levels in hay, often from baling too early in the day when it’s dewy or after rain, are a major contributor to spontaneous combustion."

He also stressed the dangers of storing machinery with hay bales.

"Storing machinery with hay bales is a recipe for disaster," he said.

"If a fire starts in the haystack, it can quickly spread to nearby machiner y, which can halt important farming operations until new equipment arrives.

"The safest option is to store hay in a separate area well away from equipment and other buildings.

"Haystack fires don’t just affect individual properties; they can spread to neighbouring farms and require extensive emergency services resources.

"Regular monitoring and proper storage can turn what might have been a

• Know the history of the hay you purchase.

• Keep haystacks to a limited size and separate your haystacks.

• Monitor moisture and temperature of your hay regularly.

• Watch for unusual odours such as pipe tobacco, caramel, burning or musty smells.

• Store hay in separate stacks or sheds away from farm equipment and other buildings.

• Keep your hay dry.

Protect it from rain, leaking rooves or spouts, and runoff.

Cover stacks with tarps or hay caps.

•Don't stack hay right to the top of a hay shed. Allow some air to circulate at the top - this helps to carry away moisture.

International Day of People with Disability MEMBERS from St. Arnaud Police held a community “Pool Party & BBQ” on 3rd December which was supported by Northern Grampians Shire to recognise and celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

In Australia, IDPwD is a collaborative effort between government, schools, organisations, community groups, businesses, and individuals.

IDPwD provides an opportunity to be part of creating an inclusive and diverse community for the 5.5 million

people with disability in Australia.

St. Arnaud Police Disability Liaison Officer (DLO), Senior Constable Luke Mernik cooked up the idea which was a fantastic way to promote inclusiveness in our local community.

Over 87 members

of the community including many persons living with disability and those assisting attended.

This was a fantastic opportunity to get our younger members of the community thinking about the importance of togetherness and having fun.

Surgical Robot Appeal Historical Society raises funds Da Vinciraises $65,000 for repairs to their structure THE Lions Club of Charlton ‘A79 and Friends da Vinci Surgical Robot Appeal raised the magnificent total of $65,535-89 with donations coming from a broad area along the Calder Highway including Donald and - Contributed St. Arnaud.

THE St. Arnaud and District Historical Society has been successful in receiving a grant of $10,000 from the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and the grant, with the addition of an insurance payout and funds the members have raised, will enable repair to be carried out to the museum building damaged in a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Inkerman and Napier Street.

When the front wall is repaired the Society will be able to replace the display in the room with the internal damage.

Fortunately the glass display cabinets were not damaged but came very close to being so.

The demolished veranda will be replaced later when the

funds are available.

When the wall is restored the museum will be able to be open to tour groups and the general public.

The Historical Society very much appreciates the alloca-

tion of this grant from the Bank as their insurance only covers about 36% of the repair costs which will amount to about $55,000 - which is beyond the means of a not-for-profit and volunteer organization.

This amount includes a Grant from the Australian Lions Foundation (ALF) of $15,000 from their Grant fund which became possible with the agreement of the Bendigo Base Hospital and the St John of God Hospital electing to work together in order to get this valuable piece of equipment into the Bendigo Health Care mix ensuing that the machine will benefit both Public and Private Health Care patients alike.

Lions President Lion John Headon said the Club is extremely grateful to the ALF Grants team and the 201V1-4 District executive for helping us to make this possible.

“It really adds a significant input to the Clubs efforts with the Appeal.

“It also a huge thanks to the North West Calder communi-

ties including Donald and St. Arnaud for getting behind and supporting the Appeal to bring new technology to our Health area that will make Surgical Robot operations possible for the people in our area” he said.

John explained that the district Service Clubs including the Lions Clubs of Charlton, Donald, Inglewood, St. Arnaud, Wedderburn and Wycheproof, Retro (the former Charlton Rotary Club), OASIS and the St Arnaud Rotar y Club contributed a grand total of $17,016.

Other Charlton organizations such as the Charlton Bowling Club, the Charlton Club, the Men’s Shed, the Travellers Rest Committee, Charlton Arts, the Skita Grimshaw Motor Cycle Touring Club, the Charlton Golf Club,

Charlton Football Club, the Opp Shop, the Charlton RSL, the Uniting Church, the NC Garden Club, CWA, Friends of EWHS, and North Central Financial Ser vices made a combined total contribution of $23,500 and individual donations including the Noonan Family Trust, Trade Travel and the Simon Mulqueen Funerals totalled $10,110.

The balance $109 is bank interest on the account.

John said the money has now been for warded to the St John of God Foundation.

In thanking all those involved John acknowledged the extra work of Lion Peter Watts who played a pivotal role in getting donations and in particularly our success in getting the ALF Grant approved .

The children in the fourth grade and their teacher Miss Smith collected flowers, fruit and vegetables and delivered them to the hospital.

The Infant Department held a Christmas party where parents were given gifts made by the children with the help of their teacher Miss Rule and assistants Miss Kenny and Marion Wembridge.

Speech Night was held at the Mechanics Institute where headteacher Mr Jones said 154 pupils attended this year with 17 studying for their leaving certificate and 24 for their intermediate certificate.

The teacher Miss Elder, who has been at Paradise for 2½ years, was presented with a brush and comb as she has been transferred to Wycheproof and will be replaced by Miss Rita Giles from Charlton State School

Concert and Children’s Cantata L ast week a fundraiser was held for the Band and the Fire Brigade joined them

in a torch light procession to the Town Hall and this was repeated last night, except this time it was in aid of the Fire Brigade.

Songs were rendered by Miss Grace Beyer, Mr H Tobin and Cyril Parry and recitations by Miss M Williams and Miss Higginbottom.

Forty children trained by Misses M Giles and M Halfhide took part in the cantata ‘Dame Darden’s School’.

Some of the children were – girls - M Wheeler M McPhee, F and G Giles, G L ardner, N and B Cooper, E Pettit, and M Backway; boys – Jack Cherry, Len Graig, Allan Young, K Golden, M and E Dunlop.

On Christmas Eve Napier St was filled with late night shoppers, many waiting to see the draw of lucky tickets for children held at Bray Bros with the winners being, Lily Luscombe tricycle, Harold Summerfield bicycle and Mavis Brabender doll’s pram.

During a gale last October a 2-room building on the property of John Hayes of Banyena was blown off the blocks it was standing on.

John was standing in the doorway and his foot was pinned down, his leg broken and several ribs crushed.

He was taken to the Stawell hospital by a special train from Marnoo.

His health gradually declined and he died on December 27th age 41 years and was buried at Banyena.

Harvest

At the hospital a large Christmas tree was wheeled from ward to ward and Father Christmas [Mr Evans] distributed gifts.

Boxing Day The day was cold and wet after perfect weather on Christmas day.

There was a large sports meeting at Wedderburn where St. Arnaud firemen H Smith and W Pavy won the Siamese race, H Smith won 130 yard race W Pavy won the 75 yards race and H Coleman win the 6 mile road race.

The first load of this seasons wheat delivered to the Sutherland railway station was 300 bags of Federation grown by Gunn Bros of Gooroc.

Record Sheep Sale

A meeting was held at the Town Hall.

Business Announcement Mr H Horsfall has purchased the milk business of Mr J B Myers.

At St. Arnaud 12, 403 sheep were yarded in the twenty-three pens at the sale yards and a large number were penned in the railway trucking yards.

The good quality of the sheep brought buyers came from all over the state.

Some of the locals who sold sheep were W R Freeman, S Mills, W Swanton, Austin Smith, J and D McIntyre, Raeburn Bros, W J Phillips, D Mullins and F Jesse.

Mr F McKenzie of Butcher St has lost a bay buggy mare, hobbled and branded E P.

During December 53 points fell, making a total for 1924 of 25 ins 77 points.

A personal story of life in the Auto trade in St. Arnaud

by Andrew Bryce I am the eldest son of Chas and Josephine Bryce who grew up on the family farm at Mitchells Hill with my three younger siblings.

Schooling was done in St. Arnaud taking the Marnoo East bus run in daily until 1978 after completing Form 5.

I was told at the end of 1978 my results although passing weren’t that good and Form 6 would be a struggle.

So going to Longerenong was no longer an option and I was told that I was better off looking for a job!

There was no room on the farm as my father was in a partnership with his brothers and two nephews, but our parents were firm on getting a trade or skills under our belt. (I was also an asthma sufferer to go with it all).

So looking to become a motor mechanic was something that I had been interested in as a

teenager, so first port of call was to pop in and see Bernie Casey.

“No, no apprentice mechanic positions available, but I am looking to take on an apprentice spray painter”, was Bernie’s reply.

Starting my working life So that’s how my working life started.

Februar y 1979 I started work for Bernie and Bev Casey at the Ballarat Road shed. A shy 17 year old with no confidence and as nervous as you could be.

First thing Casey says, “you’re a week late, you were supposed to start last week”.

Over whelmed and daunted this 64 kg weakling was surrounded by men twice my size, all appearing to know what they were doing being organised and methodical and I’m a little lost.

Trying to remember everyone’s names for the first little while which should have

grateful to them both and the girls.

It is a part of my life that I will never forget and it’s always good to catch up and say g’day.

Early work days Above: Andrew Bryce’s first car. been easy enough, but not for me.

So if their name wouldn’t come to me, I would just call them ‘Harry’.

Yes, you guessed it I became known as ‘Young Harry’.

Boarding with the Boles I boarded with Bob and Shirley Boles and their family for 2 years along with Brendan Hewitt, who had also started his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic at Dalton’s Ford Garage.

Shirley and Bob had always taken on boarders previous to me and after.

Bob had been a

spray painter for many years and a good one.

Apparently, he had gone out to paint a truck for Bernie, but ended up staying on for good as a ‘header mechanic’ along with Phil Swanton.

They were a great team together.

Bob would take me to and from work as well as home for lunch until I got my licence and car at the end of ‘79.

Three meals a day at the Boles’s, pretty much home away from home.

Shirley was a fantastic lady, great person and wonderful cook.

She looked after Brendan and myself, well beyond what we could have asked for.

I will be always

My first two weeks at work was cleaning up around the yard, odd jobbing and emptying oil drums etc.

The temperature was 42C to 44C both weeks except the Thursday in the first week when a ‘cool change’ hit and it only got to 38C (and its global warming now! Huh!?)

It was definitely dehydrating conditions.

After the third hot day, I got back to Boles’s and jumped into the shower with a thumping headache.

All of a sudden my upper body cramped and locked up.

I couldn’t move or turn the taps off.

My nose started to bleed and there was blood going everywhere.

I had only been boarding at Boles’s for three days and I was in a bit of a predicament.

I think Bob may have snuck off for a beer and in an all female household I didn’t want to yell for help.

In what seemed an eternity, the cramps finally stopped and I was able to turn the taps off and clean up.

I never confessed, but I did wonder what Shirley was thinking as to how much water I was using.

Bloody soft country kid!

Lofty Torney I worked for Casey Truck and Tractor Centre from 1979 to 1986 doing my trade as a spray painter under the guidance of Peter ‘Lofty’ Torney (one of the best!).

For all of the painters I have worked with and seen, Lofty was certainly ahead of the rest by far, there were no close seconds.

Lofty taught me a lot.

He called a spade a spade when I deserved it and he always loved the light hearted banter and BS which he often started with a big grin on his face to go with it.

He used different vocabulary on me occasionally, obviously I deserved it and it was always in Lofty’s way and I did not take much offence.

After all, I was developing a thicker skin by the day, but I always thought he had my back.

Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer at 32 years of age, returned to work but sadly passed at 34.

At the time I would have swapped places with him being young with no attachments knowing that he left behind his wife Maz and 3 children under 10.

His passing affected us all greatly.

He also competed in the Mens Open 100m back (1st), free (1st), 200m free (1st) and 200m IM (1st).

Jesse won the RSL Perpetual Mens Open Trophy.

Ebony Start competed in the Womens 17-29 50m back (1st), fly (1st), free (1st) and breast (2nd).

She also competed in the Womens Open 100m free (1st).

Ebony won the W. Maroney Perpetual Womens Open Trophy.

The tournament commenced with the weigh-in at 8 AM, followed by an exciting day of bouts that began with our talented juniors before advancing to the adult categories.

Every North Central competitor exhibited integrity and resilience, regardless of the outcomes.

By the conclusion of the event, the COMBAT SAMBO bouts brought an exhilarating end to a thrilling weekend.

Both teams were playing well.

Wedderburn scoring 2 shots on both the 12th and 13th ends saw them leading 14 –9 at the lunch break.

St. Arnaud were only trailing 1 shot on the 19th end, before Wedderburn took the game up a notch, scoring 13 shots off the next 6 ends, 9 of those on the last 2 ends, compared to St. Arnaud's 2.

Wedderburn won 27 –17.

Alan Welsh's team of Anne McNally, Dianne Ostarcevic and Laurie Goodwin played Laurie Witham's team of Rob Ashley, Sandra Standfield and Amy Roberts.

Wedderburn led 10 –9 at the lunch break.

Both teams displayed steady bowling.

St. Arnaud actually won 13 of the 25 ends, but Wedderburn were able to outscore them in a good game, winning 24 –18 Lloyd Goddard’s team probably wished they had stopped home on Tuesday.

Although they had some nice shots on many occasions, Wedderburn's lead Helen Stephenson was leading well.

On many occasions when St. Arnaud thought they might win the end, Wedderburn's skip Alan Jackson displayed his great skills and saved the end many times.

St. Arnaud Tennis St. Arnaud scores all the points ROUND 10 of North Central Division One Pennant bowls was important teams closing in and for the two local teams; St.Arnaud to hold their position in the top four Country Club to challenge for a top four spot.

THE two St. Arnaud lawn tennis teams, St Arnaud and Kara Kara are closing in on Birchip’s Wirrim team for top position on the North Central Lawn Tennis Association due to strong wins in - Contributed recent weeks.

On Saturday the teams continued their winning ways with St. Arnaud outpointing Donald, with Kara Kara too strong for Nullawil.

With a one point advantage only (41-40 games) in the Mixed Doubles and a loss (33-48 games) in the Ladies Doubles it was fortunate that the St. Arnaud Men’s Doubles combinations secured an earlier comprehensive victory over Donald in their section (53-22 games) to secure the match 127-110 games (8-2 points).

The section’s top men Jason Rowe and Jake and Sam Male each claimed three set wins.

Also playing away was the Kara Kara team which had travelled to Nullawil for the usual willing competition.

On this occasion Kara Kara returned victorious with a win 137-107 games (8-2 points).

The powerful Men’s Doubles pairings played outstanding tennis to win all the sets (56-21 games), with all the section players continuing their impressive form to clinch three set wins – Bailey Durward, Stevie Rodger, Bruce Hando, Jack McRae, “Sanga” Goode and Will and Luke Jackson.

A similar result (56-30 games) awaited Kara Kara in the Mixed Doubles with all pairings successful to offset the strong win by Nullawil in the Ladies Doubles (56-27 games) The NCLTA ladder after the ninth round is: Wirrim 69, St. Arnaud 60, Kara Kara 58, Birchip 45, Donald 41, Nullawil 39, Charlton 39, Wycheproof 9.

The teams celebrated their “end of year” wins with a “Pool & Pizza” party, one of a number of social events the Club has held this season as it lives up to its standing as a “family friendly” club open to all budding tennis players.

The season is now in recess until February, with the tenth round to be played on 1st February with the St. Arnaud teams facing off at home.

The Tennis Club wishes all sponsors, supporters and players a safe and happy Christmas.

St. Arnaud Indoor Bowls results Tuesday 10th December The last bowling day for the year was also the Christmas Break Up. It was good to see all 12 bowlers turn up wearing something Chrismassy which was the theme for the day.

The four teams made up of three bowlers in each, played six ends per game leaving Kitty where it landed.

At the end of the first two games all teams had won a game and lost a game, so it was up to the third game to see who would

Being Christmas, gifts were played for and all bowlers won a gift.

After these were presented, it was time for afternoon tea to finish off the day and year.

It was all St. Arnaud, they won all three rinks, 39 shots up, and importantly, claimed the possible 12 points, helping to consolidate their third position on the ladder.

It was perfect for good bowling and the Country Club green was quite fast and true.

St. Arnaud took a little time to adjust, down 13 shots to 18 after the first 5 ends.

However they outscored Countr y Club by 27 shots to 6 in the next 5 ends.

Country Club fought back on ends 10 to 15 scoring 18 shots to St. Arnaud just 7.

But it was all St. Arnaud from then on.

St. Arnaud’s Terry McSwain, Allan Welsh, Maurie Wood and Tony Marland took an early lead over Jason Abbott and gradually extended it.

They scored two very telling 5s, on the 3rd and 22nd ends.

Ashley Dyke, Phil McRae, Col Marchment and Darren Shepherd started badly, trailing Bill Rodgers 1 to 9, but won the next 5 ends to lead 16 - 9, and made sure of a win by scoring 5 ends in a row, 16 to 20, 13 shots to 0.

Steve Zsigmond, Glendon Hancock, Greg McNally and Tom Amos had a real tight early fight against Mark Esmore, 8 all after 9 ends.

Mark’s four took the lead and held it until the 20th end.

Steve’s team played very well in front of all the early finishers, winning the last 4 ends.

St. Arnaud Bowlers Christmas Breakup It was very hot, but 12 brave bowlers took to the green last Sunday for a game of social bowls prior to the evening Christmas get-together.

Tw o g a m e s h a d been on the agenda, but after the first game of ten ends, the players, sensibly, called it quits.

The winners were Maurie Wood and Tom Amos.

A very enjoyable evening was held in the clubrooms, attended by a good number of bowlers and family members.

A barbeque and a delicious selection of sweets, was followed by some fun quizzes and activities organised by the ladies.

The entire evening was very well organised by the ladies who deserved warm praise for their work.

New President for Charlton Trots AT the Charlton Harness Racing Club’s recent AGM Joe Thompson stood aside from his position as Club President and Andrea O’Gorman was endorsed as his replacement.

Joe had held the position for a busy seven years in which the Club has achieved a lot, cementing a permanent place in the sport in Victoria.

He has retained a place on the committee that has also welcomed three new members to the fold, Zac Steenhuis and Deb and Tom Finlay.

Charlton driver Luke Dunne and Deep Lead trainer Marnie Bibby had no luck at Mount Gambier on Tuesday night but were back amongst the winners at Horsham on Sunday when they won with “Starzinhereyes”.

The 5yo mare has now won three plus a second from her four starts in the past month.

The Mick Gadsden trained “Bizzness Class” ran a huge race at Melton on Saturday to finish second just failing by 1.2m to catch the eventual winner.

Second last at the 800m point the gelding paced its last half 55.46 for a mile rate of 1.54.56.

It should win a race soon as should its stablemate “Aldebaran Demi” who hasn’t been far away at its last two starts.

Charlton race today and Elmore have their one meeting for the season at Bendigo tonight.

The season was filled with great matches, camaraderie, and plenty of improvement, particularly amongst the junior ranks.
