New artwork by Kyle Torney now adorns locomotives SOME of St. Arnaud’s locals and many others in awe of Kyle Torney’s art work travelled to Maryborough Railway Station to celebrate the completion of Regional Rail Revival’s Murray Basin Rail project, the Ararat to Maryborough Line upgrade. And the reason for their keen interest was that St. Arnaud local Kyle Torney had been commissioned to ‘paint’ seven paintings for the side of the locomotive with his incredible art depicting the country it was travelling through. The chilly morning couldn’t keep the public away from the launch of Kyle’s work and there was a fantastic turnout to see the unveiling of the artworks. Seven paintings by Kyle of fruits, nuts and grains moved by rail via the Murray Basin freight network now adorn locomotives hauling produce across the state’s north-west. The painted locomotive will hit the network, along the Yelta line, in the coming weeks and arrives on the heels of another boost to the freight network as part of the Australian and Victorian governments’ investment in the Murray Basin Rail Project.
More freight paths This upgrade will reduce freight journey times and increase network reliability and resilience thus supporting the movement of goods by rail. A new loop passing at Elmhurst between Ararat and Mar yborough has
ensured that freight operators in the northwest have more freight paths available to them. The new loop enables two 50-wagon freight trains to pass each other, lif ting capacity in this critical section of the network and giving freight operators more flexibility. Just one of these trains can transport 3,000 tonnes of grain, freeing up regional roads from truck movements and giving primar y producers more options to move their product by rail. Freight trains on the line can also carry more product following upgrades to the 88-kilometre section of track completed in late 2022. Work is continuing at Emu to extend a passing loop on the Yelta Line, with an extra 500 metres of track being installed to enable 1,200-metre freight trains to pass each other, and at Ouyen for signalling upgrades and a new mobile refuelling station.
