Christmas Procession had bushfires, excitement and entertainment THE St. Arnaud Christmas Procession was held on Friday 20th December and although we are only now reporting on it after a break over Christmas/New Year, the evening was memorable once again.

On an evening that was remembered as having a rather eerie smokey air that descended upon Napier Street due to the bushfires in the Grampians National Park.

The orange-bushfire air did not dampen the enthusiasm of participants and onlookers, with children rushing onto Napier Street to pick up lollies thrown by those on floats.

The after-procession entertainment was also of a high standard with a large crowd attending with the ice cream van a huge success on the warm evening.

Float winners Above: The bushfire reddened skies produced an eerie atmosphere over the evening.

T h e Fi l i p i n o c o m m u n i t y o f St. Arnaud was the major winner in

the “Best overall Float”.

The “Best Community Group” was won by Respect Aged Care.

The “Best Business Group” was won

by Goldacres.

The “Best Family Group” was won by the McIntyre family.

Colin Forster was an Honourable Mention with his ‘road train’.

Christmas Lights winners The first prize for the most attractive display of homes with Christmas Lights was won by Shaun Decker at 9 Millett Street.

Petrie at 3 Watson Lake Road.

Third was won by Jane Snell and Les Mason at their home at 56 Kell Road.

Editorial Is scamming becoming so bad we need to withdraw from the digital economy WE do not know what is worse - either the process which business and organisations go through to try to stay one step ahead of scammers, or the scammers themselves. Both are becoming too much, but scamming itself is a critical issue in our society. Most scams aim to induce us either to initiate payments to the scammer or disclose account or security credentials and the methods that are used are through a wide range of communication channels, including phone, text message, social media, and email. We have used this platform of the North Central News Editorial in the past at least twice to highlight this rising scourge but now we too have become the victims.

North Central News was infiltrating through their email accounts twice late last year, gaining access to email info and stealing an identity so that accounts were used to buy goods for which the victim was billed for those goods. Some Email folders were completely emptied in an attempt to gain access to account details both superannuation and other financial matters. It became a police matter and it was stopped by changing the passwords on the actual computers involved.

This did not however, stop the damage created by this scam: organizations had to be notified to be aware of the scam in this case. Then again around Christmas a very nasty email was received from a scammer threatening diabolical action unless a specified amount of funds were received.

In another and far more personal situation I too was personally scammed over the Christmas break of quite a large amount of money by an organization that were supplying substantial goods.

Aware of scams I endeavoured to ensure that the organization involved was reputable and to be trusted. An ASIC search was done on the company E in order to protect ourselves and our investment and it all rang true.

The scammers had managed to make it appear quite legal and normal. The amount of detail in the documents and information supplied by the company was huge. So huge in fact that the police officers approached when reporting the matter were skeptical that it was in fact a scam. But it was – and within 5 hours of notifying the police and an investigation being launched, the scammers had shut up shop, closed down the website, disconnected the phones and emails. My funds are gone, and I do not anticipate ever getting them back.

What do we do? We live in a world that is way beyond the abilities of the majority of us to cope with. Most of us will not have the depth of knowlC edge to counteract the abilities of these people, who Q are the scourge of our world and who will do anyC thing to take from others who have done nothing but work hard all their lives, only to have, not only money taken off them, but the confidence that they can handle their own affairs.

It appears that in the good old days when everything was done with cash, we were all much better off. And now that the Government is heading in the direction of banning the use of cash, we will all be in a more precarious position, at the whim of the scammers.

The effect on me personally has been to retreat, to lose faith in my ability to judge people and to enjoy my interactions with others. And worse than all this, is the fact that I do not want to be the person that is skeptical of all things, that is suspicious of everyone and their motives. If we have to live like that, suspicious all the time, what is the point. I guess the bottom line is : if you can’t touch it, if you can’t smell it – don’t buy it or don’t invest in it. Try this philosophy. One report we have just read stated that “heightened diligence and caution could also drive withdrawals of participation in the wider digital economy”. It will make our world smaller as it was before the internet, but it will be safer and simpler and dare I say it – more rewarding.

St. Arnaud Theft of a motor vehicle At 6:05am on 18th December 2024 a Ford utility was stolen from the front of an address in Montague Street St. Arnaud whilst the owner was inside their home.

Criminal damage Three males were recorded on CCTV at 8:20pm on 24th December 2024 throwing rocks on the roof of a residential property in Dundas Street, St. Arnaud causing damage to the solar panels.

Trailer stolen Between 6:00pm on 31st December 2024 and 12:00pm the following day a tipper trailer was stolen from an address in Howitt St, St. Arnaud.

Attempted theft of a motor vehicle At 6:52am on 11th January 2025 a male offender attempted to steal a car in Albert St, St. Arnaud by smashing the window and entering the vehicle.

The offender was disturbed by the vehicle alarm activating.

Drug affected driver off our roads At approximately 4:00pm on 8th January 2025, police intercepted a motor vehicle in Inkerman Street, St. Arnaud being driven by a 24-year-old female from St. Arnaud.

Police allege that the female driver failed a roadside oral fluid test and subsequently tested positive for illicit substances in her system.

As a result, the female was issued with a penalty infringement notice of $593 and a

six-month suspension of her licence.

Drink driver caught At approximately 8:25pm on 8th January 2025, police intercepted a motor vehicle in Napier Street, St. Arnaud being driven by a 57-year-old female from St. Arnaud.

Police allege that the female driver failed a roadside breath test and subsequently returned a result of 0.086 on the Evidentiary Breath Test.

As a result, the female was issued with a penalty infringement notice of $593 and her licence was cancelled and disqualified for six months.

When she applies to get her licence back after the six months, she will have to complete a drink driver behaviour program, have an interlock fitted for six months and have a zero Blood Alcohol condition on her licence for three years.

St. Arnaud 100 Years Ago: 1st –22nd January 1925 New Years Day The new grandstand capable of holding 500 people was officially opened at the annual Navarre races by the Hon J W Pennington in front of 4,000 people.

Several race goers lost money to pickpockets.

There were complaints held af ter several of the races, which resulted in all races starting late, the final race of the day not starting till 6-30.

On Monday evening [13th] about six o’clock a cyclonic dust storm followed by heavy rain swept through the area with 145 points falling over the next few days.

In Napier St, people abandoned cars and buggies to seek shelter in shops, fearing vehicles would be carried away by the fierce wind, which blew the verandah off G McKechnie’s office.

At Brays Department Store a window and a gas lamp in the front of the furniture shop was smashed, a skylight in the men’s department was blown off and stock damaged by rain, telephone wires were broken and stabling at the rear of their mart was blown down.

Lorimer’s store was badly damaged, the Mechanic’s Hall lost half the roof, the bell and stand at the Catholic Church was levelled to the ground and the roof was blown off White & Worsdell’s brick kiln.

In North Western Road T Grant & Sons’ smithy collapsed and two chimneys were blown down and the roof of an unoccupied W B building blew away.

Near the Government Dam James Skelly’s house was wrecked and the roof of Mrs Marr’s house was shifted and a chimney fell on the bed.

In Silvermines Road an E B store owned by Jack Adams was blown down and the roof of the front section of his house was carried away, and Mrs Moore lost the roof of her shed.

the paint shop at Fielding’s smithy was blown down and a buggy inside was smashed, the horse having a narrow escape.

Stables and a storeroom at Kell’s premises were levelled to the ground. Stan Bray’s shed near his house was unroofed and the iron blown 100 yards away and T Kenneally’s house was blown down.

In the Slaty CreekGowar East area, at Walter Pole’s residence a chimney was blown down and the verandah damaged, while the family sheltered in the cellar.

At George Pole’s a shed and smithy were blown over and a load of hay on a waggon was carried fifty yards before the wheels locked and the hay blew off and at George Pole jun’s home two chimneys blew over and the bricks crashed through the roof, the stable was damaged and the roof blown away, the windmill top-

pled over and lids on tanks were twisted out of shape.

Alex Walker’s house was badly damaged and the shed toppled over and J and G E Polkinghorne both had chimneys blown down.

At Kooreh C Proctor’s windmill blew down and at T Proctors the roof came off a hay shed and stable.

Deaths On 8th January Mrs Bridget Kay, wife of George Kay formerly of St. Arnaud died at Brunswick leaving nine children, another son Frank was killed at Gallipoli 6-8-1915 age 25 years.

Mr Duncan Edmund Cameron died on 14th January age 78 at his residence Dalyenong, Emu. He was the eldest son of late Ewen and Janet Cameron and with his late brothers was well known for breeding pure merino sheep with Dalyenong wool commanding top prices.

Fifteen years ago he married Margaret, the widow of Evan Bryant.

Wedding Miss Grace Malone formerly in charge of Bray’s dressmaking department was married in Ballarat to Mr Herbert Cook.

Hospital Report

Cricket

During December there were 50 patients admitted, 49 discharged, 29 remaining, 6 out patients and 2 deaths, Henry Johnson and John Chisholm.

Sister Smale was given three months sick leave and a temporary nurse was employed.

Local residents are offering domestic staff extra pay to leave the hospital and work for them.

Wandering cows have completely destroyed the hospital gardens and are camping near the Nurses Home at night.

All Ideas Aboard: Donald’s TraMsformation DONALD has a new attraction - an authentic decommissioned tram has arrived at the railway station, ready for its next journey.

Thanks to the efforts of Donald 2000, the tram has been transported, craned into place, and is now set for a creative makeover.

Although trams may not have a direct link to Donald, this unique addition ties our community to a piece of history, providing visitors and locals with a rare chance to see this type of tram outside metropolitan and regional hubs like Bendigo and Ballarat.

To kickstart the transformation, Donald 2000, is offering the community a picnic style evening supper at the tram, where you can hop aboard and take a look inside, share ideas, and discuss how to make the tram and surrounding area a hub for locals and tourists.

“It’s a chance to come together, rebuild connections, and brainstorm how small projects like this can inspire and unite the community,” said Kerry Duncan, project coordinator.

“Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this exciting chapter

for Donald.”

A picnic style dinner is provided with support from Buloke Shire Council’s Community Recover y Hubs Program, funded by the Australian and State Governments.

“Our community knows what it needs, and this program, born from the October 2022 flood event, has been supporting community projects like this,” said Buloke Shire Council Mayor Cr Alan Getley.

“As the program nears its conclusion, we recognise its vital role in helping the community recover—a journey that takes time,” he added.

Our Guest Speaker was Bill Freeman who spoke about Wills.

Some of the topics Bill mentioned were: revoking a will, appointing executors, joint tenants and tenants in common,

Contributed letters of administration, intestacy, granting of Probate, Medical Power of Attorney and Financial Power of Attorney.

Bill then answered questions and we thanked Bill for filling in on short notice and reminding us that when we have a valid will, we give ourselves the best chance of making sure our assets go where we want them to go.

Three car-loads went to Maryborough, two from the garage of Messrs H. J. Jackson and Son, and one from the garage of Mr H. Dew. Jackson’s had two c a r s b o o ke d f o r Koondrook races, one

for St. Arnaud and one for the New Year’s Day picnicking at Wooroonook Lakes, while for the lastnamed, Mr Dew had four cars ordered.

The Lakeside was thronged and a glorious day was spent by children and adults.

The Wooroonook Tennis Club invited St Joseph’s Tennis Club out for a day’s tennis; and the visitors had a pleasant time.

Fire insurance and tourists returning the focus after Leader of the Opposition’s visit to Mallee BUSINESS owners under persistent threat of bushfire told Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton they cannot secure the insurance they need to protect their livelihoods, after his visit organised by Member for Mallee Dr Anne Webster MP. The Leader of the Opposition, Peter Dutton MP also called on the Victorian Labor Government to lift its game and seek federal disaster recovery funding assistance, after meeting with fire-affected Halls Gap community members last week alongside Dr Webster, Shadow Minister for Emergency Management Senator Perin Davey and Shadow Minister for Immigration and Member for Wannon, Dan Tehan MP. Dr Webster echoed Mr Dutton’s calls for Australians to return to Halls Gap in droves to help local businesses recover.

“Words fail me again to describe the heartache and devastation of bushfire in the Grampians, struck twice in twelve months by natural disaster.

“I invited the Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton to visit the Halls Gap community on Wednesday to offer support, and two key things we all heard about were businesses’ desperate financial situation and the failure of the insurance market to protect them,” Dr Webster said.

The previous fires in February at nearby Pomonal and Dadswells Bridge destroyed 45 Pomonal homes in their community of 300, costing the local economy an estimated $200 million and hundreds of thousands of tourists. Insurance premiums rose locally as a result.

On 17th December dry lightning started a fire which burned for three weeks near the 450-strong community of Halls Gap. The fire burned 76,000 hectares, destroying four homes in Moyston and Mafeking, 40 outbuildings and 540 kilometres of fencing.

The fire also burned 10,053 hectares of pasture, 1285 beehives and killed 775 sheep – not to mention the incalculable cost to flora and fauna.

“The strong message Peter Dutton, my shadow ministerial colleagues and I received at Halls Gap was that the fire struck during the year’s prime tourist season.

“I walked the empty streets of Halls Gap just after Christmas, with the community shut down due to the fire threat.

“Small businesses missed their busiest trading period over summer, it was a ghost town.

“I understand tourism numbers were already down 20 per cent from February’s fires at nearby Dadswell’s Bridge and Pomonal, before the December fires.

“Tourism operators earn between a quarter and a third of their annual income during the lost three-week period in December-January, with businesses collectively losing an estimated $1.9 million per day.

Under Emergency Management arrangements reformed by the former Coalition government the 2019/20 bushfire season, the Federal Government as of 5th January had granted 43 local ‘Category A’ disaster recovery allowance claims, paying out $15,000 with individuals and business having until 23 June to lodge their claims.

However, three larger Category B, C and D assistance packages rely on the Allan Victorian L abor Government to ask for help.

“As of yesterday, to their shame, the Victorian Government had not requested that Federal assistance– a repeat of their tardiness after February’s fires,” Dr Webster said.

“Insurance costs for some Halls Gap businesses have almost quadrupled since the Pomonal fires, and I fear that both the Halls Gap and Los Angeles bushfires will further harm the global insurance pool and drive premiums up further. But worse still, most Halls Gap businesses tell me they cannot secure insurance at all.

“Already under the Albanese Labor Government insurance costs have risen 18 per cent and I am working with locals and the insurance industry to find solutions. I am pleased to say that Peter Dutton committed to speaking to the Prime Minister and to consider policy to fix this situation.

“Insurance companies should have an obligation to provide insurance or businesses simply will pack up and leave”.

Dr Webster also joined Mr Dutton and Coalition colleagues in Pomonal on Wednesday afternoon to thank CFA volunteers for their life-saving efforts.

Bold, Bad Bull We have all heard of the proverbial “bull in a china-shop” well a new variation was provided in Charlton in the shape of a bull in (or rather at) the jeweller’s shop.

The time was about 6am.

The bull evidently decided that a little diversion would help to pass the time away, and its interest became centred in Mr H. G. Barber’s shop.

Then it caught sight of its own reflection in the plate-glass; and it charged the window.

The impact lifted the plate-glass out of its frame, the putty was torn away, and 1 ½ inch nails were wrenched out.

But the window did not break.

The bull was next inclined to turn its attention to one of the windows in the premises of Mr W. Wylie, but some boys who were about chased the animal away.

Big Blow Whirling clouds of dust which enveloped the sky in a yellowish gloom, convinced Charlton and district that a passable imitation of a cyclone had been let loose.

The rainstorm which followed was a nasty break in the good harvesting weather.

At Buckrabanyule the whole of the verandah at the store next to the Gladstone Hotel was blown down.

A considerable amount of damage was done in the district lying between Yeungroon, Coonooer and St. Arnaud.

Mr J. Ritchie, of Ye u n g r o o n , h a d a chimney blown off his residence, while the roof was smashed in, and the ceiling damaged.

Mr Gordon Gill’s barn was minus a roof.

Mr E. Ritchie lost the roof of his stable.

Glenloth Mr Thos Allen was presented with a gold-mounted whip, the gift of Mr Geo Hagley (trotting goods manufacturer), for being the second most successful trotting driver in Victoria for the past season.

Mr Allen had 14 ½ wins to his credit.

Snakes Saturday proved rather an eventful day at the East Charlton Homestead (Mr J. Paterson).

About 11 o’clock in the forenoon, a 6-foot brown snake made its appearance, and was promptly despatched.

In the afternoon another of the same species, about 5 feet in length, was observed, and suffered the same fate as its predecessor.

Both were killed within a few yards of the Homestead.

Football Club was formed, captained by Mr J. McGurk. A Cricket team was also formed.

Annual Sports were held.

The working of the mine became more difficult owing to the quantity of water present.

Over 13 years £72,000 worth of gold was extracted.

The Company dissolved in 1911.

In the Great War over 20 brave lads enlisted and three made the Supreme Sacrifice.

Under Canvas Under auspicious circumstances, the 1st Charlton Troop of Boy Scouts held their Annual camp at Wooroonook.

The weather was perfect.

The routine was: 6.30am Reveille; 7, swim; 7.30 breakfast; 9am tent and kit inspection,prayers; 9.30- to 12 swimming; 12.30pm dinner; 2 to 5 Scout games and sports; 6 tea; 7 to 9, campfire songs, yarns etc; 10, supper; 10.30 lights out.

The Camp was under the personal supervision of the Scoutmaster, Rev. A. E. Freeman.

Nine Mile – a brief historical review: With an increased number of people living in the Nine Nile district, owing to the working of the mine, a school was conducted in Mr Miles Winter’s hut.

The space was too small so a Hall was built in 1901 and school was held there.

At the opening about 40 children were present – families: Edwards, Baker, McGurk, Winter, Drury, Ray, Robins, Carr, Nyah, Cross, Smale, Brookes and Griffiths.

The Hall was also used as a Church.

On receiving the scholarship Dayne spoke about the many people and experiences that have led to her success.

The evening concluded with the C o l l e g e C a p t a i n’ s report where they acknowledged the memories, they will take with them and thanked the work of all staff at the College.

New CEO for McCallum Disability Services McCALLUM Disability Services has announced the appointment of Rhiannon Williams as its new Chief Executive Officer, after an extensive recruitment process undertaken in the second half of 2024.

Rhiannon’s appointment begins a new and exciting chapter for the not-for-profit organisation, now in its 72nd year of providing disability support services in the region.

In recent years McCallum has merged with Ballarat Regional Industries, invested in its future at the Ballarat West Employment Zone and recently purchased a large parcel of residential land in Alfredton for the development of future disability housing.

Board Chairperson, Brett Bryant said the Board was excited about what the future

holds for McCallum with Rhiannon taking up the leadership position.

“We’re ver y impressed with Rhiannon’s commitment to social justice and her passion for creating positive change in the community which will be pivotal to the success of McCallum’s strategic direction moving forward.” Mr Bryant said.

“My first priority is to meet the people within the McCallum community, to listen and learn,” Ms Williams stated.

Rhiannon will take up the role of Chief Executive Officer in late January.

In The Paddock Grazing sheep on stubble in dry seasons AS the grain harvest draws to a close across the region, sheep producers will be eyeing off the potential value of grazing their sheep on stubble.

- by Cathy Bunter, Ballarat A good rule-of-thumb is that the value of the feed equals the amount of residual grain and green plant growth from sprouted grain and summer weeds.

In drier years, the stems and leaves can be quite nutritious as less energy and protein has ended up in the grain.

Windy weather can also cause grain to drop to the ground.

Graze sheep on crop stubble immediately after harvest to gain the most benefit.

Look to remove the sheep from the paddock no later than 6 weeks afterwards.

Paddock size, stocking density, and how much grain and green shoots remain will be factors in your decision.

A key indicator will be animals no longer maintaining their weight.

Stubble doesn’t contain much calcium, but licks and supplements can make up for this.

A simple solution is to provide your sheep with limestone plus 5% salt to help solve the deficiency.

Trace elements, vitamins, urea and topping up the nutrition shortfall with pellets and grain such as lupins to increase protein intake will help.

District Veterinarian Officer There are some animal health issues to watch out for when grazing sheep on stubble: •water belly •grain poisoning • Polioencephalomalacia or thiamine deficiency • nitrate and nitrite poisoning from oilseed crops like canola • Lupinosis from a fungus in lupins that produces a toxin.

Sheep are helpful at reducing high stubble load but be careful not to overgraze the paddock and leave at least 50% ground cover to prevent wind erosion and help retain moisture in the paddock.

In The Paddock Ask questions before upgrading farm water equipment SEASONAL conditions have led to a shortage of stock water across most of Victoria which has renewed interest in constructing farm dams, and the addition of pumps, bores, tanks, troughs and piping.

Farmers are advised to ask some important questions before constructing a new dam or adding water infrastructure or equipment to their property.

Before engaging an earthmoving contractor for a new dam, investigate answers to important questions like: How much water do I need, will the dam hold water, will it fill most years, how big should it be, is there a good site for a spillway, do I need a permit or license, what will it cost?

Longer, hotter summers and decreased cool season rainfall has meant many smaller dams built in previous years are drying up.

L ack of runoff, increased water consumption and evaporation contribute to this issue.

Many new dams built across Victoria are also failing within the first few years due to

inappropriate materials or poor construction techniques.

As a result, farmers need a bigger catchment area to improve the chances of filling dams regularly.

At least 10 hectares of catchment for every megalitre of water stored in a dam is recommended. Runoff from nearby roads and tracks is an effective way of getting water, especially in a dry year.

A livestock dam should be as deep as your site will allow and have a minimal surface area to reduce evaporation.

Consideration should be given to planning a key large dam to use for reticulating water to troughs across the property, via gravity or pumps.

Allow a minimum spillway width of 5m.

The spillway should end with a level spreader to ensure water leaves the dam

A gently sloping, well grassed area is essential for a safe and stable spillway.

The spillway should have little or no slope with a flat crosssection.

The addition of a trickle flow pipe set below the spillway level will minimise ongoing maintenance.

Purchasing appropriately sized pumps, tanks, troughs and pipes is essential for providing the flow of water needed on a hot day.

Ensure the construction and design of troughs are not vulnerable to livestock damage and are easy to maintain.

A single inferior fitting in a farm pipeline could result in total system failure and loss of valuable water.

Reputable products will be marked with the manufacturer's details, date of manufacture, a relevant description and appropriate industr y markings. For example, the markings on

good quality rural polyethylene pipe will include PE80 or PE100, indicating the longterm strength of the materials.

When purchasing pipeline equipment and fittings, deal with a reputable supplier with a good track record, spare parts and after-sales service.

Selecting an experienced and reliable contractor, plus a few basic soil tests, will minimise the risk of failure.

Ensure your contractor has the appropriate skills, a good reputation and up-to-date equipment.

Ask the contractor for examples of their work and a guarantee.

A permit or license may be required to build, extend or repair a farm dam in Victoria.

2024 game bird harvest report now available THE Game Management Authority (GMA) has released the Estimates of duck and Stubble Quail harvest in Victoria 2024 report with results showing an estimated 391,900 game ducks were harvested in 2024, which is 22% above the long-term average of 320,000.

Of the 21,383 licensed duck hunters, 60% actively hunted in 2024.

On average, active duck hunters harvested an estimated 30.3 ducks during the season over an average of 8.9 days.

The three most commonly harvested species were the Pacific Black Duck (39% of the total harvest), Grey Teal (25% of the total harvest) and Australian Wood Duck (24% of the total harvest).

The most popular hunting areas, with the highest numbers of ducks harvested, were around the towns of Sale, Kerang, Boort, Horsham, and Shepparton.

Results also show an estimated 457,400 Stubble Quail were harvested in 2024.

This is almost triple the long-term average of 159,000 and is the second largest Stubble Quail harvest since telephone surveys began in 2009.

Of the 25,788 hunters licenced to hunt Stubble

Quail, 22% actively hunted in 2024.

On average, active quail hunters harvested an estimated 79.4 Stubble Quail for the season over 8.5 days.

The most popular quail hunting areas were around the towns of Shepparton, Echuca, Rochester, Ballarat and Colac.

The highest number of quail harvested were around the towns of Shepparton, Ballarat, Echuca, Rochester and Wangaratta.

GMA Director of Strategy and Research, Simon Toop said the research was based on information gathered from randomly selected licenced game bird hunters who voluntarily participated in the surveys.

“Favourable environmental and breeding conditions and more active hunters likely resulted in an increase in the number of ducks and quail harvested,” Mr Toop said.

“The information hunters provide helps

build a stronger understanding of gamebird harvest trends and hunting activity in Victoria and I’d like to thank all hunters who participated in the surveys.”

Throughout 2024, approximately 3,458 licenced game bird hunters were surveyed to collect information about their hunting activity, including how many game birds were harvested, where hunting occurred, hunting methods used, and the species of game birds harvested.

The report provides estimates of the total harvests of ducks and Stubble Quail by Victorian Game Licence holders and provides insights on hunting activity during the seasons.

The report is produced annually by the GMA in collaboration with an independent telephone survey company and the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research.

A personal story of life in the Auto trade in St. Arnaud This is a continuation of ‘A personal story of life in the Auto trade in St. Arnaud’ from the last edition in 2024.

A long line of apprentices Bernie Casey has always been prepared to give someone a go and give them a start in their working life, which so many of us are grateful for, I am but one.

There were apprentices above me and ones starting behind me.

The apprentices when I started were Gerard Goode in his final year as a mechanic, Leigh Sutton in his third year as a mechanic and David McLelland second year welder.

All dedicated and excellent at their respective trades.

The following years were Greg Kershaw, Phillip Bryce, Daryl Baldwin, Wayne Burgess, Darren Burge as well as a labourer or two being Greg Potter, Greg Wellard, Dean Humphries and Steve Pope.

The other mechanics that came through during my time were Ian Rosaler, John McMahon, Rob Marshall, Mick Torney, Dale Watts, Stephen Poole, Harry Green, Phil Loats, Daryl Smith, Ian Nicholson and Neville Nash.

Colin Dellar was foreman.

He was a very patient, polite man and a true gentleman. God knows he had to be!

Spare parts were Noel McDonald, Daryl Rhodes, Michelle White and later on Phillip Price and Tim Hewitt.

In the office was Jenny L ane (Batters), Susan Williams, Yvonne Nevill, Shelly Douglas, Fair y Rhoden, Doug Falla and Ian Williams in sales.

Apologies if I have forgotten anyone.

Every year Bernie would be taking on at least one, sometimes two new apprentices, giving them a start and a track in life.

This has been very much unheralded and I hope in the future that Bernie and Bev Casey are acknowledged in some way befitting the contribution to all of our lives, as well as the St. Arnaud community and farming districts.

Mick Anderson Another character that deserves a paragraph of his own is Mick ‘Tooleybuc’ Anderson.

One particular morning after I had not long started working for Bernie, I was at the paint area when this old chap walks through the door wearing pyjama bottoms, slippers and a towel over the shoulder.

I looked and thought what !?

Who is this and where

has he come from? It was old Mick.

From that day forward, it was morning young Harry and morning Mick like a Looney Tunes cartoon, as he headed off to the shower each day.

Mick would listen to ABC every morning.

He told me it was the only station to listen to my boy.

Occasionally we would hear a loud chuckle from the caravan and then an expletive followed by another when he had disagreed with the commentary.

I am sure he wouldn’t be an ABC fan these days.

As workmates we all seemed to get along pretty well.

There was the odd incident or disagreement but that was usually with the boss.

At the end of the week, most would head to the pub to have a beer or two together.

Occasionally, there were too many beers together.

It was fairly regular that you would see Casey walking back to the office through the centre of the workshop, obviously with five thousand things going through his head.

He’d stop, turn around, mumble something, scratch his head, scratch his bum, turn around again, mumble and head back to the office.

None of us were any the wiser.

Now I am doing exactly the same thing and I only employ myself.

Bernie always kept a lot of things in his head and not writing them down.

One particular morning, Lofty walked into the shed, tears rolling down his cheeks and laughing away stating ‘I have heard it all now Harry, Bernie wants me to go to Callawadda and pick up a tractor but he can’t remember who he lent it to!’

When I first started, the paint solvents were all on the North East side of the shed and right next to it on the South East side of the shed was the welding area.

I don’t know how I am still alive!

Bernie did spend a lot to put up a truck shed and moved the painting area between the truck shed and header shed.

Phil Donovan was kept very busy concreting.

The end result was much healthier and safer workplace for all.

At Geelong East Tech My training involved going to Geelong East

Technical School twice a year for three week blocks, ride sharing with Marcus Durie from Wycheproof.

On return from the second block in the first year, Casey confronts me and says ‘I heard you had been playing up down there!’ and left it at that.

Stunned, I am in full denial as I hadn’t been, that was still to come.

Jenny Lane (Batters) had a word to me later and said Bernie does like to kid you around if he gets the chance.

In the third year of the apprenticeship we arrived a little late to the hostel and it was full, so they put the apprentices into the Carlton Hotel in the middle of Geelong.

Yep, party time!

We were put on the first floor but on a couple of nights the steps from the bar to the first floor seemed like climbing Mt Everest.

Three weeks there wasn’t a good idea!

Our training days in Geelong consisted of half day practice, quarter day theory and the rest colour matching.

Late in my second year or early third year I was having trouble matching a certain colour.

One of the instructors at the time questioned things a bit, took me outside and asked the tint needed to match the two paints.

Yep, you guessed it I am or was Australia’s only colour blind spray painter.

I have basically kept it to myself as I didn’t think it helped my resume.

Trucks licences for all Back at Casey’s it was decided that as a group it would be a good idea for us to all get our truck licences.

So on one particular day around twelve of us hit the St. Arnaud Police Station and got our heavy duty truck licences.

I think we all ended up doing a bit of truck driving around the state at different stages when Lofty was ill, with the low loader and any truck in the yard that wasn’t sold.

I think we all agreed that the directions we were given were never that accurate! (That’s being polite).

Second-hand headers a plenty It was either 1980 or ’81 Bernie had sold new headers and obviously there were a lot of second hand headers that had arrived.

The old 8-4 or 710 PTO’s were aplenty.

and all had to be washed down and cleaned in preparation for painting, which was up to me.

It took about three to three and half days to prepare and paint each header.

Week after week went by, header after header and I looked down onto the block where all of the second hand machinery was displayed (which is now the AMPOL service station) there were two full rows of PTO headers and a third row had started.

I thought to myself they will be sitting there awhile but by the time harvest had started they were all gone but three.

Two of those were spoken for and the last one went just on harvest.

This Casey character could sell washing machines to nudist colonies.

The ’82 Drought In 1982, the drought had hit and turned things quiet on some fronts.

Bernie obviously got on the front foot and got a contract with the Avoca Shire with new trucks which involved trade ins and in turn farm trucks.

He managed to keep us all on I think at the time, which was an absolute credit to him as he would have had to been feeling the squeeze.

The rains arrived in March 1983.

Machinery sales went through the roof and so did the work load, there was hardly any time to scratch ourselves.

It was unbelievable the money spent and how things changed so quickly.

Life at Learmonth Road Smash Repairs Bernie invested in the Ballarat dealership which naturally involved more staff again as he had many clients in the Western District. I guess it made a lot of sense and less travel required.

Things perhaps didn’t turn out as well as they could of as in early 1986 fourteen or fifteen from the St. Arnaud team including myself and several from Ballarat were laid off.

Three jobs for a spray painter in Ballarat were available at the time and I accepted a job with Ken Cook at Learmonth Road Smash Repairs.

One of the first things I noticed was ‘Cooky’ walking down the centre of the paint shop, stop, turn around, scratch his

New opportunities in the country I worked at Learmonth Road for about fifteen months.

It was a good experience but I never really felt settled.

The old saying that you can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy is probably appropriate in my case.

By some good fortune whilst playing football against Navarre early in 1987, Rodney McRae came and spoke to me about a job at Oakbank Merino Stud and whether I would be interested in working for the McRae family.

I took this opportunity before moving back to the family farm in 1988 after

purchasing a neighbouring block of ground.

My thanks To finalise things, I would say that I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to grow and develop as a person, from a shy reserved teenager to working in an industry with so many talented and skilled people.

I was not only taught a trade but also respect and appreciation for what they have done in giving me a start and a chance.

Those people being Bernie and Bev Casey, my workmates with special mention to Lofty, the Boles family, the McRae family and of course my parents who pushed, encouraged and supported.

Last but not least, the girl who walked into my life in 1988 and has stayed with me through the tough times, the good times, the broke times and the James Taylor times (Fire and Rain).

My life would have very little meaning without my wife Anne in it.

AFTER returning from the annual three-week Christmas recess, the Australian wool market has made a very positive start to the 2025 calendar year.

Many industr y obser vers predicted a strong opening, with these predictions based on the deterioration of the Australian dollar (AUD) over the Christmas recess.

The AUD lost 1.36 cents compared to the US dollar (USD) since the previous sale (18th of December).

With the majority of Australian wool traded in US dollars this was bound to have a direct impact on the market.

These predictions were quickly realised as the market opened, with sharp rises across all merino types and descriptions recorded.

The market quickly found an increased level, and then generally maintained it all the way to the f inal hammer in the Western region.

By the end of the first day, the individual Micron Price Guides (MPGs) for merino fleece has risen by between 11 and 55 cents.

The benchmark AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) added 34 cents, this was the largest daily rise in the EMI since February 2023, when the EMI rose by 44 cents.

The second day the market quickly found the levels set on the previous day and generally maintained these price points until the end of the day, meaning the market recorded only small movements across the country.

This was reflected in the EMI which added just 2 cents for the day.

The EMI finished the series at 1190 cents, a rise of 36 cents.

St. Arnaud slips into second spot NORTH Central pennant Bowls resumed last Saturday after the Christmas break, and St. Arnaud Division One bowlers had a good win over Charlton, - Contributed lifting them into second place on the ladder.

They swapped positions with Donald Golf on percentage.

St. Arnaud started very badly against Charlton, trailing by 5 shots to 24 after the first five ends.

Steve Zsigmond, Glendon Hancock, Greg McNally and Tom Amos failed to score until the 6th end, down 0 – 10.

However they managed to draw level with K. North, by scoring 6 shots on the 15th end, and stormed home, winning the last 8 ends, for a remarkable turn-around victory.

Ashley Dyke, Phil McRae, Col Marchment and Darren Shepherd were down 4 – 9 against S. Perry, after 5 ends but

won the next 5 ends to take a 13 – 9 shots lead.

They gradually increased this margin, for an 11 shot win.

Terr y McSwain, Allan Welsh, Maurie Wood and Tony Marland lost the first 4 ends allowing K. Willey a 5 – 0 lead.

The St. Arnaud four managed to draw level on the 10th end and led by 6 shots at 15 ends.

The Charlton four fought back to grab back the lead by 3 shots after 20 ends.

But Terry’s team finished strongly winning the last 5 ends.

John Nevill Country Club Singles Champion THE final of the Singles Championship was played off between John Nevill and Bill Rodger on Sunday 12th January, in front of some very interested spectators.

The game was played on an excellent green, also the bowling conditions on the day were very good.

The game was simply great to watch, with some brilliant draw shots, also some conversions, or at times the controlled weight shot being played.

After 5 ends Bill led 5 shots to 3 and after 10

ends John was leading by 2 shots 9 shots to 7.

With both bowlers bowling well, John was leading 13-11 after 15 ends, then Bill got going by winning 4 out of the next 5 ends to lead 18-15 after 20 ends.

Then it was John’s turn winning 4 out of the next 5 ends to hold a slender margin of 1 shot leading 21-20 after

- Contributed 25 ends.

With the finish in their sights, John proved more consistent winning 3 of the next 4 ends to go on to an excellent win in the final, scores being 27 shots to 21.

To both bowlers congratulations on a great game, all spectators that witnessed the final were treated to some excellent bowling.

John Nevill is like wine, he gets better with age.

Raced by Marie and Luke Ralph the 6yo has been wayward in quite a few of his races throughout his career but his last 2 starts for Mick have resulted in 2 wins so fingers crossed he will repay the faith his connections have had in him.

Charlton trainer Tori Hutchins’ good run continued at her home track when “Celestial Zodiac” followed up its Melton win by winning again this time beating another local “Markleigh Caz”.

“Caz’s” trainer Mick Gadsden finished the day with 3 seconds.

The first two races at Charlton were won by Western District trainers Marg and Paddy Lee. The winner of race 1 was driven by Lockie Cook who had driven a treble at Globe Derby (SA) the previous night with his last drive being at 10.19, SA time.

The Charlton race was at 12.32pm and after winning it Lockie was off to Mildura for 7 drives, the first one at 5.08pm.

No luck for him at that meeting but Luke Dunne who won on Tori’s horse at Charlton made the trip up the Calder Hwy. for 4 drives that netted a winner for Mildura Club President Pudd MacDonald.

At Swan Hill on Sunday “Sir Vincent” won the opening race for trainer Tori Hutchins and driver Luke Dunne and then Zac Steenhuis won for a group of mostly Charlton owners with the cleverly named pacer “Tap to Pay” who was having its first start for the stable.

Noel and K aye Boyd’s “Luvaflair” returned to the winners list at Gloucester Park on Friday when she won the Group 3 Trotters Sprint at her third run back from a spell.

In doing so the 7yo mare set a new career best time of 1.58.0 and was her trainer’s, Nigel Johns biggest success since he collapsed in the stable area at Gloucester Park in July last year.

The mare’s next outing is the Group 2 Trotters Cup to be run on January 31st.

Next Sunday is the Wedderburn Club’s Australia Day meeting marking the return to racing at Donaldson Park after an almost three year absence during which time the new $7m Community Hub has been built.

The Pacing and Trotting Cups and the Central Victorian Championships are the features on the day
