Parks Victoria review spells hope for retaining Upper Teddington WITH the announcement by Minister for the Environment Steve Dimopoulos of a review into Parks Victoria for failing to meet community expectations has sparked hope that the decision to decommission the Upper Teddington Reservoir without any community engagement could be overturned. This week a spokesperson for the Victorian Government has addressed these concerns that were put to them by North Central News. The spokesperson said little that was new but stressed that the safety of community was foremost in their minds. "We want as many Victorians as possible to enjoy our great outdoors with access to the many recreational opportunities on offer across the state's parks and forests, while protecting what we all love about the bush." "Parks Victoria are investigating options for the future of the ageing Upper Teddington Reservoir
and will further engage with the community and visitors into the New Year." "The campground will continue to provide recreational and wellbeing benefits to both the local community and visitors." Member for Ripon Martha Haylett said she has been calling on Parks Victoria to better engage with the local community on the future of the Upper Teddington Reservoir for some time now. “It is a well-loved reservoir that locals want to make sure is maintained for years to come. “I will continue to push Parks Victoria to meet with the community and explain what
options are available and why." Upper Teddington Reservoir is located on Strathfillan Creek in the Kara Kara National Park, situated just upstream from the newer L ower Teddington Reservoir. The Upper Reservoir is over 130 years old, and was originally designed to supply water to the town of St. Arnaud. The reservoir provided a continuous supply of water to the town for almost 90 years, until an alternative supply was eventually found. Currently, water from the Upper Reservoir feeds into the Lower Reservoir. Engineers undertook

a risk assessment of the Upper Teddington Reservoir in 2020, and found it posed a longterm safety risk to the community due to ageing infrastructure. Due to the potential long-term safety risks and ongoing maintenance costs, Parks Victoria has made the decision to decommission the Upper Teddington Reservoir at Kara Kara National Park. The Victorian Government has provided funding to deliver the decommissioning project. Although potential long-term safety risks posed by ageing infrastructure and ongoing maintenance costs led Parks Victoria to explore options to decommission the Upper Teddington Reservoir at Kara Kara National Park they did little to inform the community. The 130-year- old reservoir, which is located between Bendigo and the Grampians, was assessed by engineers in 2020 and was found to be in a deteriorating condition and below the acceptable risk level outlined by Australian guidelines. • Cont. page 4.
