Residents’ petition rewarded by much needed road works AROUND 18 months ago the residents of Inglewood Road put a petition to the Northern Grampians Shire Council about the state of the road they live on.

This was shortly after the floods of 2022 and the residents in that street (around the Veterinarian Clinic) had been inundated by water.

At the time the Council put the cost on the action plan to be carried out much later, but have been able to move this forward as a priority.

The curb and channeling are to be completed this year and the drainage issue will be carried out within the next year or so.

Draft Action Plan to be given EVIE in Market Square greater consumer engagement gets its first customer DUE to a lack of attendance by residents the staff at Northern Grampians Shire Council (NGSC) will be running a separate feedback engagement session for the Draft Northern Grampians Local Area Action Plan which was launched last Thursday 23rd May. The Action Plan is a separate document to the St. Arnaud Structures Plan which deals with rezoning in a significant way, and deals with recommendations subject to the NGSC’s long term financial planning processes.

The priority recommendations linked to the

Strategic Investment Themes are nature, recreation and wellness, first peoples, food and drink, arts and culture, regional accommodation, identity, marketing and placemaking, industry development and collaboration and supporting infrastructure.

The document is located on the “Have Your Say” section of the Northern Grampians Shire Council and if you wish to make a comment you have until 4th June to do so.

However, the indications are that the engagement with St. Arnaud and district will be widened to involve personal contact with businesses and another meeting with community members.

BRENDAN Goode the Radiographer/ Sonographer at East Wimmera Health Service from Carapooee West was the first person to use the newly installed - Contributed Electric Vehicle charger at Market Square.

He stopped on his way to work at the St. Arnaud Hospital, one morning last week to top up his electric vehicle.

It is an additional way of charging Brendan’s Tesla vehicle as Brendan usually

does the bulk of his charging from his offgrid solar system at home.

“It is great to see this

initiative that not only supports local EV drivers but boosts tourism to our great town,” Brendan said.

Carapooee Fire Bridge honours long service SERVICE medals for 10 years of service up to 60 years of service were handed out at the Carapooee Fire Bridge Awards Night last Friday, 24th May at the Sporting Club function room.

With a dinner at 6.30 pm, the multiple awards followed.

The event was attended by Tony Miles, the CFA Operations Officer who presented the medals.

“The Taste of Things” at the REX - Contributed

A sumptuous visual feast and a gentle romance are the key ingredients of this week’s Rex Theatre movie in the muchlauded French film “The Taste of Things”.

Winner of the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival for Vietnamese French director, Tran Anh Hung the film was about bringing authenticity to the telling of this historical romance / drama which is set in a Loire Valley country estate in 1880’s France.

The film follows the life of Dodin Bouffant as a chef living with his personal cook and lover Eugénie.

They share a long history of gastronomy and love, but Eugénie refuses to marry Dodin, so the food lover decides to do something he has never done before: cook for her.

Starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel, the pair, who were married in real life (now separated), create a striking chemistry in this masterful homage to the craft of food preparation, food enjoyment and life in general.

Replicating the exact activities in the kitchen of the times, the film used the services of three-star chef, Pierre Gagnaire as a consultant to ensure historical accuracy and that the dishes chosen “worked” on set.

All of the food in the movie is real.

Numerous dishes were created at varying stages to show the progression of the preparation, as well as ensuring the quality of the food remained perfect for each of the multiple “takes”.

Cast approval for the food was also high with the director saying, “When I called cut, they always kept on eating!”

The sensual pleasure of food and romance is ravishingly revealed through the breathtaking cinematography as the story of life, friends and loss unfolds.

Powerful and evocative, “The Taste of Things” is a beautiful exploration of the sensory experience of food and its profound ability to connect people.

“The Taste of Things” (PG135 mins) screens on Saturday 1st June at 8pm, Sunday 2nd June at 2pm and Tuesday 4th June at 8pm.

Is a change of political position a backflip?

Why does the Australian media love to use the term 'backflip'? It doesn't make sense.

There is the ‘Backflips against Bullying” program, which is a series of educational programs for K-12, with 3 Programs for Primary and 2 Programs for Secondary but in politics a back-flip is a U-turn and Dr Webster used it in a press release this week.

Well, probably her media adviser wrote it, which does explain it. In politics, we often hear backflip called flip flopping, very derogatory.

Have you ever heard a change of political position described as a "backflip"? The Northern Territory Government changed position on public sector wages. It's been said that they "backflipped" on their previous position.

"Backflip" is often used to describe an aboutface, a change of direction, or a reversal of policy.

The problem is, that's not what a backflip is. For as long as we can remember the term 'backflip' has been used in media and commentary to describe anyone in power or any organisation significantly changing their original stance, or reversing a stance or decision that they previously had or made.

How does the term backflip make any sense G though? When someone performs a backflip they will end up in the same position as they started and be facing the same way. A backflip brings your body through 360 degrees, not 180 degrees. Essentially nothing has changed before and after the backflip. So, the political backflip needs a new name.

Something like 'U-turn' like would be much more appropriate. Physically performing a backflip takes effort and intent. A "backflip" in the media suggests the same effort and intent, but on an opinion or stance, and implies the "backflipper" has gone to lengths one way but then invested effort to go back Qldin the other direction.

Research commissioned by Energy Consumers Australia and the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA), based on interviews with more than 400 small business operators, will reveal small employers are being hammered by high energy bills.

The new analysis focused on small business transition to net zero emissions and has found more than one in three small to medium enterprises (SME) had experienced energy hardship in the past 12 months (34%), which was more than under the impact of postCOVID lockdowns.

“A small business owner contacted me on Budget Night to say the $325 rebate offered by Labor for just one year is dwarfed by the $3,000 increase in his power bill per month.

“Less than a dollar-aday from Labor is not going to make a jot of difference when power prices have surged thanks to Labor’s reckless railroading of renewables-only policy across regional Australia,” Dr Webster said.

COSBOA chief executive Luke Achterstraat criticised the pre-election budget for failing to provide more support for 2½ million small-tomedium businesses, who employ 5 million workers saying small business is getting smashed by rising energy costs, with financial strain higher now than during the COVID shutdowns.

“Cost-of-living pressures and other compounding factors like high interest rates

economy expanding and a historically low unemployment.

More than four-infive of the insolvent companies had less than 20 employees and 83% had assets totalling $100,000 or less.

More than two-thirds had liabilities under $1 million.

“Cashflow issues and the long-term impact of the pandemic (and related measures) continue to rank as the major reasons businesses fail,” Dr Webster said.

“Costs, particularly for energy, are up, and sales are down due to high inflation and low consumer spending.

“The Albanese Government have put climate dogma ahead of job-creation and the economy, sending small business to the wall” says Dr. Webster.

“The time for action to help small business is now.”

Today’s research shows 51% of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) have reported a negative financial impact over the last 12 months.

A series of numbered points of interest will introduce walkers to some of the natural features along this stretch of river as well as provide snippets of local history.

It will be a big weekend for Banyena as they have Mick Thomas and the Roving Commission as well as local, Danny Walsh, putting on a gig at the hall on the previous evening. (See Eventbrite for further details) It's back to the bush for the third winter walk on 14th July.

The group is heading to Bryntirion State Forest, south of Rupanyup.

The Dunmunkle Creek runs through this patch of bush and under the guidance of grass aficionado Ian Bedgood, the group will explore, amongst other things, the impact that recent cul-

tural burning has had on the area.

The final walk on 11th August takes in Lake Buloke and the mighty red gums that thrive in this environment.

Chris Guthrie is the guide who will be sharing his keen interest and knowledge of this unique environment.

So if you are looking for a way to ramp up an otherwise quiet winter Sunday, why not consider joining this bunch of wanna be naturalists and discover some of the lesser known spots around the Wimmera.

The Victorian Budget 2024/25 investing $6.8 million to triple the capacity of the program to support more Prep to Year 3 students with free onsite vision screening and, if needed, free glasses.

The expansion will open the program up to an extra 473 schools, making it available to 74,000 more Prep to Year 3 students through to 2027.

The Glasses for

Kids program is managed and delivered by State Schools’ Relief and offered to students from Victorian Government schools identified with high and medium levels of disadvantage, based on the school’s Student Fa m i l y Occupational Education Index.

The Glasses for Kids expansion is part of the $287 million package also delivering a once-off $400 School Saving Bonus.

Locals participate in FITTYS 5 again this year in memory of local girl FITTYS 5 was run again last weekend which is a 5km walk at the Bridgewater Recreation Reserve as part of the Action Farmers Bridgewater ‘Run4Resilience’.

The race/walk is in memory of Lesley Morrison (Fithall) who passed suddenly in 2021.

The run/walk is not only a 5km route, but for the runners a 10km and a 21km route.

Unsatisfactory drain The Health Officer (Dr W. E. Wilson, M.D.) reported to the Shire Council as follows: “The drain in Learmonth is in a very unsatisfactory state.

There is a need of a proper drain being made without delay.

“There were no cases of infectious disease reported since last report.

I inspected a drain at Cr Rogan’s request.”

It was moved, ”that the Inspector’s attention be drawn to the Health Officer’s report

and that action be taken in connection with house refuse being drained into street channels.”

Empire Day Yesterday being the conclusion of the school week, the occasion was observed then at the Higher Elementary and State Schools.

The Golfers’ Bridge As a means of access to the golf course and the football reserve, what is known as the “Golfers’ Bridge” is a great convenience.

It was erected by Father Goidanich, and the Shire keeps it in repair.

Arising out of that there was some discussion as to whether the present grazing fee (6d per head), was too low.

Cr Merrylees took the view that it encouraged the placing of dry cows, and calves, in the reserve, causing the reserve to be overstocked, with the result that milch cows were underfed.

It was carried that the Standing Committee prepare a statement showing the revenue from, and expenditure on, the park over the last few years, and consider whether the grazing charge should be amended.

As the Society has pledged itself to send £30 a year to the Soldier’s Cot in Wycheproof Hospital, the ladies are anxious that the ball should be well patronised by the general public.

Forthcoming exhibition: Solitude IAN Kemp, a fine art photographer based in Ballarat, presents "Solitude," a compelling exhibition that delves into themes of isolation and the transient nature of life, officially opening at the St. Arnaud Raillery Hub Gallery on Saturday 1st June at 2pm.

- Contributed Kemp's journey into photography began later in life, culminating in his graduation from the Photography Studies College in Melbourne in 2017.

His connection to the Wimmera Mallee started during his early career as a teacher and School Principal at Wycheproof.

Kemp's artistic evolution has been significantly influenced

by Silvi Glattauer of Baldessin Press, who introduced him to the photogravure process, a technique that marries digital imagery with traditional intaglio printing.

His works often use nature as a metaphor to explore the imperma nence of human existence.

In "Solitude," this exploration extends to a profound sense of isolation that permeates the images.

The landscapes of Argentina featured in the exhibition transport viewers to remote places visited by fewer than a thousand people annually, emphasising solitude.

During the COVID19 lockdowns, Kemp captured aluminium works devoid of human presence, reflecting the enforced seclusion of that period.

His portrait models, absorbed in their own worlds, avoid eye contact, further underscoring the theme of isolation.

The increasing recognition of Kemp’s work, marked by a series of solo exhibitions this year, highlights his unique ability to depict ephemeral beauty.

New sub-variant detected in Australia A new family of COVID subvariants sweeping through the US and UK has been detected in Australia, with Australians warned to expect a surge in cases in the coming weeks.

The FLiRT subvariants, which are made up of several sub variants including KP. 1 and KP. 2, has quickly become the dominant strain in the US. FLiRT derives from the JN. 1 variant, which drove up COVID-19 infections in

Australia earlier this year.

The nickname FLiRT stems from the technical name of the mutations in the genetic code.

And the warning is FLiRT is “very transmissible” just like the JN. 1 variant.

Experts agree that the new wave will hit its peak in mid June and the peak will last four to six weeks.

In Australia, FLiRT variants have been detected across a number of states.

In New South Wales, KP. 2 made up 50 per cent of COVID19 infections as of May 4, according to NSW Health.

FLiRT variants have also been detected in wastewater samples in Victoria, while Queensland’s chief health officer John Gerrard warned the state was seeing an uptick in COVID cases.

Ian Kemp's photographic journey began in 2012 with the Goldfields Image Makers in Maryborough. Moving to Ballarat in 2014, he joined the Soldiers Hill Artist Collective.

His work, which has received international recognition, includes commissions for private clients and businesses.

Robbery in Napier St At 4 o’clock on Sunday morning thieves threw a brick though the large plate glass window of Percy Shepherd’s tobacconist shop and stole watches valued at £25.

Mr Shepherd, who lives on Charlton Road, also had £5 stolen six months ago.

St. Arnaud Band Elections – President T Grant,

Vice-Presidents W Hurren and H W Dunkley, Secretary G H Osborne, Band Secretary A E Walsh, Drum-Major R J Cooper resigned and a replacement has not yet been announced.

After many years as President, George McKechnie resigned and was made a Life Member. At present there are 17 players and 4 juniors.

Deaths Mrs Annie Bibby former resident of Waterloo Plains,

daughter of the late James and Mary Ann Brain, relict of Frank Bibby died in Caulfield leaving three sons.

She was born at Rostron in 1864, was married in 1893 and they ran a grocery business in North Western Road before they moved to Singapore where Frank died and Mary came home to her parent’s residence.

Mr James O’Donnell died age 78 at his son James’ residence Queen St. leaving three sons.

He was born in Limerick, Ireland, came to Victoria in 1864 and settled in Ballarat.

He married Rebecca Matthews and they moved to Swanwater 50 years ago where they farmed for forty years, before moving to St. Arnaud.

James was buried at St. Arnaud with Rebecca who died age 48 in 1903.

Gooroc A successful concert and dance was held to raise funds for the school.

The orchestra consisted of Rev Fr Phelan [kettledrum], Miss O’Donohue [piano] and M Caine, P Hoye, H O’Donohue, James, Joe and M Walsh all playing violins.

Football starts next week Teams in the North Western Football Association are St. Arnaud, Donald, Birchip, Watchem, Litchfield- Carron, and Cope Cope.

They will compete for the Rowe Shield and members of the premiership team will each receive a pair of gold sleeve links.

Players must be bona fide residents of the district they represent and matches will start at 2-45.

The Association will charter all special trains to convey players to matches and each club must contribute £6 as a guarantee.

The K ara K ara Junior Football Association consists of four teams, Swanwater, Kooreh, Coonooer and Emu. Young boys of St. Arnaud will compete as North End and South End teams.

Investing in the future of Rupanyup farmer takes action on climate change Victorian AgTech PETER Teasdale and his family have been farming at Rupanyup for generations.

INNOVATION in the agriculture sector is being supported by more tech startups to create new technologies that will help farmers improve their efficiency and adapt to new challenges in the industry.

Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence today announced $1 million for the AgTech Grants program which will invest $50,000 in eligible startups looking to build their business capability.

Ms Spence said the Government has seen some inspiring AgTech startups come through the program addressing everything from weather, crop productivity, and supply chain.

“AgTech startups are driving innovation and adaptation in our agriculture sector, and we are providing crucial support in their early critical stages.”

Delivered in partnership with LaunchVic, the grant provides founders with

dedicated mentoring from startup experts to build their businesses and seize new opportunities.

They can also support activities that help create new jobs and support Victoria’s economic growth.

The agriculture sector is critical to the Victorian economy, however changing conditions means that the sector needs to continuously adapt to new challenges.

AgTech startups will help drive this adaptation and provide farmers with the tools, data and knowledge they need to improve productivity and sustainability.

Since 2023 the AgTech Grants Program has awarded grants to 19 startups

providing services in supply chain efficiency, farming automation, soil sensing intelligence and pollination management systems, among others.

The success of the first round of the grant program has led to this additional investment of $1 million to continue to fuel technological advancements in the sector.

A notable recipient of the first round is Drone-Hand, the first commercially available, user-friendly, AI dri ven, automated flight-app for livestock monitoring.

Applications are open and will remain open until 30 June 2024.

Growing up in the region, Peter has a keen eye for the changes that have been taking place.

Now a fourth generation broadacre cropper, he knows that being willing to make changes is a part of farming these days and is doing his best to grow more from less rainfall.

Peter says that over the past 16 years a lot has changed.

He notes that the climate has been changing, the systems are changing and the way information is received has changed a lot.

Peter says that 'in the early days, information was less critical because there were fewer disasters'.

He remembers the times when water-logging was an issue on the farm, and recalls that 'we were doing it all wrong then.

The soils were all worked and cultivated and were set up for water-logging to happen.'

On a changing climate Peter says that the vast majority of scientific community think that climate change is happening, but he is not sure the run of dry years is all to do with that.

“The truth is somewhere in between.”

In recent years Peter has focused attention on the farming systems that will enable him to 'get better at growing stuff on less rain'.

He says, 'Whether it's man made climate change or a 200 year dry cycle, it doesn't matter to us.'

While planning for long-term climate change is a strategic task, understanding the seasonal climate drivers can help with on-farm tactical decision making.

Seasonal weather drivers, such as El Niño and Sub-tropical Ridge, are good indicators of what the season may bring.

Peter uses sea surface temperature maps,

but only when the time is right or when he wants to know where the rains are coming from.

Peter understands that 'you need a contrast [of temperatures] across the sea surface to get things happening.

The sea needs to be warm in the right spot.'

Peter uses a range of information sources to stay up to date on seasonal climate, including the BOM website, subscription to weatherzone, longwave trough charts and 7 and 14 day

weather forecasting tools.

Despite challenges Peter says he does not think it’s clever to keep doing the same thing and hope something changes for you.

“I’m hoping that Al Gore is wrong and climate change is not as catastrophic as people are talking about and normality returns.

“No doubt we will need to keep tinkering with the system.

Peter summarises it as to “plan for the worst and hope for the best.”

THE Australian wool market has fallen again this series, although the reduction was marginal and there were positive movements within certain pockets of the market.

The national offering rose slightly, there was a total of 35,518 bales on offer, down from the originally transmitted total, after 6.1% was withdrawn prior to sale.

In the merino fleece the market movements were varied, the individual Micron Price Guides (MPGs) in this sector ranged between plus 4 and minus 29 cents.

Mixed results in the oddments, skirtings and crossbreds had the net result of a 5-cent fall in the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) for the series.

The stagnant nature of the market for the 2024 calendar year is best highlighted when looking at the average daily movements of the EMI, with both positive and negative movements combined.

There have been 44 selling

days, calendar year to date.

When the positive and negative movements are combined, there has been a total of 236 cents of movements, a daily average of just 5.4 cents.

Although the daily market movements have been small, the market is trending lower.

The EMI opened the 2024 calendar year at 1,212 cents, the EMI is now trading at 1,130 cents, a fall of 82 cents, this equates to a 6.8% reduction.

That said, the EMI is now sitting marginally higher than the beginning of the season.

The EMI opened the 2023/24 season (beginning of July 2023) at 1,126 cents.

KKGA Weekend Pennant 2024 ST. ARNAUD won back to back Pennant flags in the Kara Kara Golf Association Weekend Pennant held at Birchip on Sunday, - Contributed May 26th.

Eight teams played in two sections with the winners of each section playing in the final.

In Section1, Berriwillock were undefeated with wins over Boort, Donald and Charlton to comfort-

ably progress to the final.

Section 2 was dominated by St. Arnaud with impressive wins over Wycheproof, Wedderburn and Birchip.

The final, played against the previous

two pennant winners saw St. Arnaud victorious over Berriwillock 3 matches to 2.

The St. Arnaud team was Scott Wright, Bill Rodger, David Lanyon, Will Jackson and Leigh Hines.

NUMBERS were down a bit this week, but that didn’t stop some excellent bowling and lots of laughing, along with a few groans.

Sudoku is an 81 square number grid with nine blocks each containing nine cells. To solve the puzzle, all the blank cells must be filled in using numbers from 1 to 9. Each number can only appear once in each row, column and in the nine 3x3 blocks. You can successfully solve the puzzle just by using logic and the process of elimination.

St. Arnaud Indoor Bowls Championships on THREE members from St. Arnaud travelled to Charlton on Sunday 19th May 2024 to take part in the North Central Indoor Bowls Association - Contributed annual ‘Association Day’.

They combined with Assocation Clubs from Boort, Charlton and Wedderburn.

Also in attendance were bowlers from Avoca.

There was a total of 25 bowlers, making up seven teams of three bowlers and one team of four bowlers to play three games of eight ends.

Teams were inconsistant with

their bowling and Kitty got bowled off the mat a few times.

In A Grade Marilyn Knights leads with a score of 80 from Brenda Proctor 82 and Jenny Lanyon 86.

In B Grade Mary Elliott and Bernice Fithall equal with 96 lead from Chris Batters 99.

Winner of the day’s event was Marilyn with a nett 63 with Bernice runner-up nett 65.

Bernice also won nearest the pin on the 6th and 8th while Jenny Lanyon won the 18th.

The final round of Pennant was played at Charlton on Monday morning with St. Arnaud losing to Wycheproof 3 - 0.

The winner of pennant for 2024 was Donald.

Winners galore at Swan Hill THERE were plenty of winners for trainers from down south at the Swan Hill meeting on Wednesday.

Charlton trainer Michael Gadsden got the ball rolling with the inform “Hungry Hogarth” winning the first heat of Challenge Pace and then heat two was won by “Soar” who is trained at Marong by Trevor Patching.

The final is being run at Charlton tomorrow.

The second of the regular “Battlers in the Bush” maiden paces went to the Gower East trained “Cornelia” who hadn’t raced since 30 January 2020 and was having only her fifth lifetime start.

The 8yo mare was bred by Ross and Mary Conway and her third dam is the broodmare gem “Libby Low” who left eleven winners that included “Voight”, the winner of 28 races including the 1989 St Arnaud Pacing Cup, and “Nicholas Branach” who won 33 races including the 1993 Kilmore Cup. Veteran Birchip trainer Gary Living was the next to taste success with “Stylish Gem” and then again two races later with “A Rocknroll Jet”.

A field of 29 players, five women and 24 men, took advantage of Saturday’s glorious weather.

Several matches in the Kevin Nevill event were played, with some clear winners.

Tubby Drendel, in his first match of the year, succumbed to Hayden Heyme without a whimper.

Scott Wright continued his fine form, defeating Arnold Bond very convincingly, with Arnold declaring he now needs a holiday at Port Fairy to recover.

David Lanyon showed no mercy to his good mate, Sanger (John) Goode, and in the other match, Bill Knights and Will Jackson resolved the issue on the 19th hole, with Will victorious.

A match in the WL Bray event was played, with the young fellas Jake Male and Harley Durward victorious over the vintage combination

of Peter Martin and Chris Campbell, who were very tardy out of the blocks.

The winner in A Grade was Scott Wright with 72/5/67 and another Eagle to continue his charmed run of weekly Eagles.

Runner up was Lindsay Baldock in a countback from Jake Male.

In B Grade, Hayden Heyme sizzled his way around the course with an 87/21/66, earning the St. Arnaud Physiotherapy Award.

Runner up was the consistent Colin Reyne in a countback from Alison Fahey.

St. Arnaud Caravan Park Nearest to Pin on the 8th went to Will Jackson, while the Weir’s IGA NTP on the 18th went to Rob Batters.

Sanger Goode collected another ball for his stash with NTP on the 6th, while Mitch Egan won NTP on the 10th.

On Sunday, our pennant team – comprising Scott Wright, Bill Rodger, David Lanyon, Will Jackson and Leigh Hines – journeyed to Birchip and duly saluted, winning the pennant over Berriwillock 3-2.

Well done boys; we assume there were a number of pit stops on the way home!

- By Bob Wooley their games against Jack and Peter to extend their lead to an unassailable six games to two before Leigh and Ned sent Caleb and Ben to the stockade in the only two games required in third round.

With the doubles shared the Farmers’ boys departed the field of battle with an eight games to four triumph leaving the deflated Diggers stuck, devoid of campaign honours, in the trenches.

All eyes were turned towards the north-west, not in the ethereal expectation of glimpsing an appearance by the Aurora Australis but the return of the reigning Premiers, Royal One, to the Country Club, the scene of their amazing triumph in last year’s granny, where they were to be hosted by the hottest kids in the paddock, the Country Club Two combination.

It was not to require an extended period of performance on the baize before the premiership defenders were to indicate that they are not pretentious pretenders.

At the completion of the second round, after the Royalists’ Mitch Phillips had retired Grant Doyle and with the matches between his teammates’ Steven Shovan, Sam Postlethwaite and Dave Russ against Harley Durward, Jake Male and Will Jackson respectively all at level pegging, they were in the lead five games to three.

Harley was to edge the rollers and floggers one game closer when he eliminated Steven but the now riled-up Royalists then set the baize ablaze as Sam and Dave closed out their matches then they powered on to win both doubles and depart the dusty fairways with a nine games to four victory.

There was to be an interesting encounter at the Parisian sector of town when the boys from the Pub in the Scrub visited the Framers’ Arms hotel to take on their number Two team.

When the Farmers captivating captain Alayne Cunningham charmed Dale Stephenson off the baize at the top of the second round they led by three games to two but elation soon turned to deflation as the Loganites, Jason McNaulty, Scott Turner and Keith Turner all overcame Ruby Smith, Luke Po l e a n d B i a n c a Cannon and with the doubles shared the Avoca Foresters headed for home, having tasted success for the first time this season, after a seven games to four triumph.

The Redbacks and Demons put on a very watchable exhibition of reserves football at the Wycheproof Recreation Reserve.

With a little more efficiency around the ball the Demons were able to build a small lead by quarter time and maintain their form until three quarter time.

The game was up for grabs in the final term with the Redbacks hoping for early goals.

They attacked solidly during the first minutes of the quarter, had opportunities but three getable goals were missed, the Demons rallied, went forward, scored the maximum with a quick inside fifty and went on to score a further three goals to the Redbacks two and ran out seventeen point winners in a very entertaining contest.

Many good contributors on both sides.

For the Demons, Alexander Hogan rucked well at ballups and around the ground; Hunter Connolly on ball where his pace and skilled foot passing tested the Redbacks throughout.

Both players hit the scoreboard with good support from Ben Brennan who scored three majors.

Heath Senior, Daniel Murray, Lachlan Ezard and K ane Butcher were other good contributors to the Demon cause.

The Redbacks were well served by Finn Turnbull in the ruck

who had sterling duel with the Demons Hogan.

Chris Hargreaves at full forward marked strongly all day and finished with three goals.

Coach Ash Younghusband continued his consistent form with another sound performance on ball.

Jake Hayes, Robbie Tonkin and Cam Lang all worked hard throughout to keep the Redbacks in the game while Andrew Roberts chipped in with two handy goals.

Much proved effort from the Redbacks after a couple of disappointing performances before the byes.

Under 14s With the sharing of players in the under age teams becoming somewhat of an art form due to the numbers of players clubs have available, the Redbacks and Demons provided great entertainment for spectators.

Both teams have a

mosquito fleet and while the scoreboard may not indicate as much there were some good skills displayed by youngsters on both sides.

Little tackers get better by the week.

The more they play the more confident they become which equates to improving skills overall.

There were many instances of effective ball delivery by both hand and foot from both sides.

Ben Cunningham, Blaz Cramp and Caleb Gault (4 goals) found plenty of the football for the Redbacks as did Will Huismann in the centre who capped his game with two goals.

Ollie Bird on ball and Logan Roberts at half forward both came under notice, getting to where the ball was and effective disposal after gaining possession.

Redback recruits for the day Max Gould, Ollie Bird and Hale McIntosh were great value.

Junior Country Championships 2024 EIGHT clubs sent representatives to this year’s Hockey Junior Country Championships, held in Melbourne over the weekend of May 18-19.

Forty-eight regional teams were entered in the round robin competition, seven of which adorned in the distinctive red of North Central.

Some would argue that JCC is the most exciting hockey event on the calendar.

It is an opportunity for our grass playing juniors to experience hockey on turf, some for the very first time.

The U18’s (and a couple of the U14 girls finals) at the state hockey centre, were given the chance to play on its distinctive blue turf, the holy grail for junior hockey fans.

But the JCC weekend, for North Central, is about more than just the game of hockey.

It’s about forging friendships off the field, some that will last a lifetime, for adults and kids both.

Two 57 seater buses left North Central on Friday afternoon, picking up players and parent helpers along the way, stopping for tea at the Calder Park Service Centre, where the sight of more than 110 red jumpers assembling for a meal is a sight to see.

Then it’s on to the accommodation where the work for the indefatigable parents and coaches truly begins.

Uniforms are handed out, gear sorted, rooms allocated, team sandwich orders submitted, coach meetings held, bus departures for the various teams (all heading in different directions at different times) decided, then it’s off to bed for the kids and a quiet cuppa for the adults.

Heading to Essendon Hockey

Centre early the next morning were, the under 14 girls, who were coached by Lilly Pritchard, managed by Monique Saggers, with Brenton Henderson and Chris O’Flaherty as parent helpers.

The two U14 boys teams: Red - Marcus Williamson (coach), Ben Williamson (ass. coach), Tara L owe (manager), Stephanie Smith and Jennifer Greenaway; White – Phoebe Paley (coach), Julieanne Kilroy (manager), Candece Jay and Bianca Hendry.

Playing at Greensborough Hockey Club, a good 30-40 minute drive from the city, were the U16s girls and boys, under the guidance of: Sarah Botheras (girls coach), Molly Meadows (manager) and Vanessa Field; Darcy Reid (boys coach), Carly Pearse (manager) and Sherryn O’Flaherty and Melinda Springthorpe.

The U18s were headed to the SHC at Parkville were coached

by Aidan Goode and James Paley (boys), Sue Trotter (manager) and the girls, Kate Gifford (coach), Mel Waters (manager) and Ken Rowe.

North Central umpires also gave up their time: Nathan Hendry, Erika Bicket, Bridie Casey and Kathy Durie are to be thanks for their efforts, without umpires, a championship event cannot be run.

Ultimately, the weekend is about

- Contributed accessing next-level hockey, and “success” for the “North Central Ninjas” came this year via two of the junior teams – from the U14 girls who finished third on a countback, and the U14 boys red making it to the gold medal match and bringing it home in front of a roaring sea of spectators in red plus a contingent of supporters via livestream.

But success is more than just a medal; success is the memories each player will bring home, of the skills they learned, the pace they played at and the stamina they found within themselves, and importantly, of the brand-new friend they sat with on the bus.

L ooking af ter a team of 14 players is no mean feat, and the adults who gave up their weekend are to be thanked over and over.

The huge weekend cannot happen without the generous sponsorship of the Charlton and Community Bendigo Bank, who offset travel costs, and of the North Central Hockey Association, who puts manpower and money into the event each year to allow its junior players such an opportunity.

The home-and away hockey reaps the benefits on-field thanks to the effort and care of such parents and club members each year.
