Voting is in the air around Northern Grampians and Buloke Shires ELECTION time is hotting up certainly in Kara Kara Ward of the Northern Grampians Shire this week, with candidates out and about including Karen Probst candidate for the Kara Kara Ward holding a meet and greet at the Parkview Bakery last Saturday morning. SCAN held a Meet the Candidates session on Monday night but we were unable to get it to print so that will be in the next issue of North Central News. For Buloke voters, the two wards close in geography to the Kara Kara ward of Northern Grampians Shire are Lower Avoca ward and the Mount Jeffcott Ward. Each of these wards have three candidates contesting two positions. Stephen Barratt, Kevin O’Dea and Bruce Stafford will contest the Lower Avoca Ward and Daryl Warren, Graeme Milne and Charmaine Delaney for the Mount Jeffcott Ward.
Candidates Vision Stephen Barrett’s is to encourage small business development, foster green spaces and communicate council decisions effectively to concerned ratepayers in a fair and equitable manner; and monies spent economically in the shire.
Kevin O’Dea’s vision includes solving problems that will benefit the whole shire not just a certain town. “A recent example is the AEMO towers rollout which affects the whole shire NOT just certain areas. “We must pull together to solve this issue for the benefit of the whole shire.” Bruce Stafford states his vision is to cultivate a vibrant, resilient and inclusive community that fosters economic growth, supports local businesses, enhances infrastructure and encourages participation in sport and recreation, whilst preserving our natural resources. “I will prioritise community well-being and engagement, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.” For Daryl Warren, his vision includes fostering economic growth, enhancing public amenities, and ensuring transparent, sustainable and accountable governance. “I believe in the power of community collaboration and will continue to advocate for the needs of residents. “I will advocate that Council rates are used in the best interests of our community.” Graeme Milne states that his vision for the Shire has a few different aspects. “I want us to maintain our current financial position, [and] continue to
halt the decline in population. “Help increase work, business and tourism opportunity, while bettering the way we carry out our core roles. “Encourage a strong relevant Council workforce.” Charmaine Delaney believes we should ensure we have an inclusive healthy
and connected community. “Ensuring our vision statement is one we can aspire to and reflects the importance of attracting tourism, industry growth with housing and space to thrive while advocating for improved cost of living, well maintained roads with transparency and responsible spending.”

Last week’s STEVE in the sky kept Kylie up all night THIS week has been awesome for those that love star-gazing.
Above: The ‘comet’, a truly once in a lifetime experience. Below: The aurora at the old St. Arnaud Convent. - PHOTOS: Kylie Heyman
Kylie Heyman has captured some massive light on the right hand side of the aurora which is quite rare and was only visible for about 15 minutes on 11th October. This is known as STEVE which is space-talk for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. Only formally dis-
covered in 2016, STEVE is a mysterious atmospheric phenomenon that is linked to, yet distinct from the aurora. Kylie said it was totally mindblowing. “I stayed up all night watching until the sunrise washed out the colours.” Also last week for those that love star-
gazing, there was a Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinsan – Atlas. National Geo graphic calls the comet ‘the comet of the year’ and the reason is that this comet, which will be visible to the naked eye, orbits the sun roughly once every 80,000 years. The last time it passed Earth humans were just migrating out of Africa.. On 12th October this particular comet reached its closest distance to Earth, only 0.472 astronomical units away, which is about 43.9 million kilometres. In Australia, the comet is currently only visible just before sunrise in the morning sky. Before 27th September in the southern hemisphere, the comet continued to get brighter and higher in the morning sky • Cont. page 7.

Blink and you would have missed the new PrePrep building landing in St. Arnaud CONSTRUCTION workers have been as busy as bees recently at the site for the new PrePrep building which will take enrolments for the 2025 year soon. Last week many trucks bought in the prefabricated portions (about 14 in all) to the site at the Primary School and now they are putting them all together. More pics page 3.
