An introduction to Filipino culture held by Rotary A night of fun, information and beautiful Filipino food was experienced by nearly a hundred people at the Town Hall last Wednesday night, 3rd July. The Philippines Night event was held by the Rotary Club of St. Arnaud, the first of the multi cultural events showcasing the diversity of cultures in the district. The event was a highlight for all those that want to know more about other cultures, with information about the Philippines on the large screen, traditional Filipino food and entertainment. Songs both in English and in one of the many Filipino languages were sung by Gretchen, Mary Jane and Donna who mingled with the audience to sing many of the Filipino songs. There was plenty of action in the kitchen of the Town Hall with Rosa, the chief organizer of the event,
directing the food and the action.
What we learnt For those present much was learnt about The Philippines from the country consisting of over seven thousand islands, to the islands being earthquake prone. Although the official languages are Filipino and English, there are 19 regional Filipino languages. It is the world's twelfth-most-populous country, with diverse ethnicities and cultures and the capital is Manilla with the most populated being Quezon City. With a population of 114 million over 11 million of Filipinos live overseas and over 60 of them live in the St. Arnaud district. • More pics page 7.

High Tea a winner for St. Arnaud Orchid Society THE first weekend of July each year, twelve regional orchid societies from around Victoria travel to a different town each year and meet up with like-minded people, display their plants, compete amongst one another and learn new tips and tricks to improve their knowledge in the art of growing orchids and specimen plants. - Contributed The annual ‘Challenge’ has now been running for 24 years, and there is some stiff but friendly competition amongst the growers for place cards, sashes, certificates and awards for their plants. The Challenge is one of the first Orchid Shows in Victoria each year, and it certainly is a challenge to the growers to get plants to flower at the right time of the year for this show.

This year there was a total of five plants from different growers that were ‘awarded’ by the judges. These five plants were of extremely high quality and have now won State awards over the weekend. Many photos, measurements and notes were taken from the plants and this collected data and photos then goes on to the national level for further competition and awarding. This all makes these special plants, highly sort-after from the breeders and significantly increases their monitory value (if the growers wish to sell them).
