Rain came down on the St. Arnaud Agricultural Show ON an unusually rainy day in St. Arnaud the town held its Agricultural Show for 2024 where event venues were changed in an instant but everyone enjoyed themselves. Exactly a hundred years ago the weather was beautiful with six thousand people attending, many arriving on the special trains, timed to allow visitors to attend the show and return home the same day. Also can you imagine that due to the volume of traffic heading up Inkerman Street to the show grounds police had to regulate the traffic on the Napier Street corner.

Opening of the Show This year’s show was officially opened by Margaret Proctor with speeches from Annette Driscoll and Peter Knights just as the rain came down. Cr. Eddy Ostarcevic performing one of his last official events as a Councillor for the Kara Kara Ward of the Northern Grampians Shire Council was also an official.

Candidates address questions for residents of Kara Kara

NORTH Central News put a few questions to the Candidates for the Kara Kara Ward in the Northern Grampians Shire Council elections so that people can have a better understanding of what each person stands for. The first question was ‘What do you consider your biggest challenge if/when you are successful’. Karen Probst stated that she knows it will be a steep learning curve, learning the procedures and language of Council. “L earning new things is something I have done numerous times before in my career, personal life and further study. “It is a challenge I am looking forward to,” she said. Terence Robertson said that all his working life in large corporate organisations, focussed on efficiency, value add and value for money, it will be a different challenge to contribute within a council when the role of

a councillor is to concentrate on strategy and governance. “However, I believe that my skill as a financial analyst will be very useful,” said Terence. John Farrell believes that the biggest challenge would be to ensure all voices are heard and represented while making decisions that benefit the majority can be challenging. “Additionally, managing limited resources and budget constraints to effectively address these varied needs demands strategic planning and prioritization. “Ensuring transparency and maintaining trust with constituents through effective communication and engagement would also be a critical

challenge,” John said. While Ross Hudson believed his biggest challenge would be to continue familiarising himself with the area and features of the Ward, meeting the widest range of residents across the locations and at places or groups they gather, to be building understanding, rapport and effective relationships with them, as well as trust and acceptance. “There will also be the learning curve to understand the full role from the governance perspective, and become familiar with current council administration processes as well as the organisation structure and functions, and personnel roles and responsibilities,” Ross finalised.

For Murray Emerson he believes there are a number of challenges for the Northern Grampians Shire but the biggest, would be sustainability and all the challengers that come with that sustainability. “Ser vices, infrastructure, roads, health, aged care to name a few. “It is a very difficult task to balance what we can deliver and what the community expects.”

Issues in Kara Kara ward Currently, the most important issues for the Kara Kara ward were questioned. For Karen Probst Kara Kara ward issues include poor condition of roads, housing options, loneliness, day

care, transmission lines, shortage of doctors, staff shortages, pressure on retail businesses, lack of recreational water reserve. “These issues are not just relevant to Kara Kara, they affect the wider area and society as a whole. So, although it might seem a long negative list, Kara Kara ward is a wonderful place to live.” Terence Robertson stated that he is limited to what he has heard and can personally observe. “As a councillor, and a background boy, my role will be to act as a link between the community and the NGSC as an organisation so their issues will, and should, become my issues in time.
