A shave that raised funds for Leukaemia Foundation OVER 150,000 Australians are facing the devastating impact of blood cancer, and 17 lose their life every single day and one young person in St. Arnaud decided to do something constructive in response. At the start of 2025, 11 year old Maria Taylor committed to doing the World's
Greatest Shave. Maria decided that shaving her head was the ‘least she could do
for those suffering every day’. Since then, she has worked with the

Wellbeing Leaders at St. Arnaud Primary School and within the community to raise as much money for the Leukaemia Foundation as possible. At school, icy poles and cupcakes were sold for a gold coin donation. Maria has also approached local businesses after school asking for donations for a raffle. With all of the donations from local businesses, she was able to make up 3 hampers and raise approximately $900 in raffle ticket sales alone. The support was overwhelming and left her feeling very proud to be a part of such an amazing community. ‘The Shave’ took place at a special assembly at St. Arnaud Primary School on Friday 7th March. To celebrate there was crazy hair day for all students which created a buzz in the air. The primary school helped raise approximately $1200. What a huge effort! Overall Maria raised over $5500.

who needs our help”, Maria said. “A huge thank you to everyone in the com-
munity who helped support and raise money for such a worthy cause”.
Double success for St. Arnaud locals as Galah hitches a ride to town Wimmera Show Ambassadors
VERY commonly in Australia a Galah is used to refer to a fool or idiot and has been derived from the so-called stupidity of the bird. However, this particular Galah outdid his own stupidity, or we think so.
LOCAL identities Eleanor Parry and DustyRaiyn McIntyre were honoured at the Wimmera Region Ambassador awards dinner last Friday night at Horsham. Eleanor Parry was awarded the Senior Ambassador for the Wimmera Region of the Victorian Agricultural Shows. Current St. Arnaud College Captain DustyRaiyn McIntyre was awarded Junior Show Ambassador for the Wimmera region. The ladies won their second round of judging where both went through an interview process, and produced a video and oral
presentation highlighting their rural, and local show knowledge. DustyRaiyn and Eleanor will proudly represent the Wimmera region in the next round of judging later in the year. They are to be congratulated for the impressive manner in which they represented our community. We are lucky to have such motivated young women in our community.
Above: The bemused Galah when being released from his captivity in the engine.
A member of the North Central News team drove from home to visit her son in town, parking her car and returning some 45 minutes later. When returning to her car she heard flapping and scratching coming from the bonnet. Her son investigated, equipped with gloves and tools, and was forced to underdo part of the protective covering on the engine and lo and behold, a Galah popped up. It seems that our team member thought she had hit a bird but on only seeing a couple of feathers dismissed the idea until she saw the bemused bird. In releasing the bird from its purring captivity, it flew off to who-knows-where probably not too sure of what had actually happened. The only comment from her son was “mum’s new feature - Flaming Galah alarm system an anti theft device”. Good one.
