Excellent offerings in competitive mid-sized sedan class From page 54

great, particularly around the city. The six-speed transmission operates quickly, and while the suspension isn’t set up to be as sporty as something like a Mazda6, the Fusion is willing and grippy, though that smallish engine doesn’t match its low-end grunt in top-end power. Doubtless the sport model will give you a bit more poise in the corner-carving department, but the chassis is willing at this more comfortoriented level. Frankly, I wish Ford would stuff their hilariously powerful EcoBoost V-6 in here so we could go hunt down BMW 3-Series at the racetrack. For now though, it’s nicely balanced. Features Pricing for the basic S model starts at $22,499 and runs up to the mostexpensive Titanium models (which look utterly fantastic, by the way) at $33,499. However, the base prices are just the beginning. Glancing over the options breakdown on my tester, I can see some pricey items, like the $3,000 luxury package with leather and heated seats, or the $1,500 for driver assists (lane-keeping and blind-spot detection). All told, this 1.6 SE goes through the checkout for $33,199 after freight and PDI. Seems like a lot, but actually compares favourably with a well-equipped Japanese mid-sizer. Fuel-economy is officially rated at 8.5 litres/100 kilometres city and 5.3 l/100 km highway. Not going to happen. Mixed mileage is rated at 7.0 l/100 km but you’re more likely to see double-digit consumption, depending on driving style. Green light Stunning looks; solid chassis; high-tech options; comfortable ride; roomy interior. Stop sign Turbo engines can be thirstier than expected; slightly fiddly infotainment; options costs can mount up. The checkered flag Might not be licensed to kill, but a solid play for your mid-sized dollar: from Michigan with love. Competitors Honda Accord ($23,990) Honda’s mid-sized car is a household name for a reason, and this current-generation car is a slam-dunk. It’s roomy, it’s efficient, and you don’t even need to option it with the rocketship V-6 to

too large for some. Also, you have to give the Ford the nod for its less-cluttered interior. Mazda6 ($24,495) What a time to be shopping for a mid-sized

get real driving pleasure: the four-cylinder Sport models are surprisingly fun. Of course, it’s not exactly the most striking car in the world, and it might be a little

worth the price of admission. So, it really comes down to whether you like your secret agents to have an arsenal of gadgets, or just a really good judo-chop.

But it’s a driver’s car, and that means the value is in the chassis and drivetrain, not in features. In particular, Mazda’s TomTom-based navigation system isn’t really

family car. This Mazda is also an excellent option — excellent driving dynamics paired with stellar fuel economy. It’s a great-looking car too.
