It’s been a little while since our last employee publication, so I’m delighted that we have refreshed One Magazine.
This is a publication created for Norse employees by Norse employees. And because it’s the start of a brand-new year, it seems only fitting to dedicate this issue to wellbeing.
WELCOME TO YOUR NEW-LOOK ONE MAGAZINE
In January, I hosted a podcast with the mental health charity Norfolk and Waveney Mind. My guests, Victoria and Andrew, gave some valuable insight into the importance of looking after our mental health and the connection between mindfulness and exercise. As a regular gym goer myself, this is something that I believe in, and I usually go before work and use this as a time to focus on myself. To help you on your mindfulness and wellbeing journey, we have joined Mind’s 3K A Day Challenge, which kicks off in March, and I hope you’ll join me in participating!
The wellbeing of our employees is fundamental to both me and the Senior Management team. Visiting our offices and depots around the UK, I know first-hand how hardworking and dedicated our people are. So we must provide the right tools and resources to help you and your wellbeing at home and work. Mental health is everyone’s responsibility in the workplace. So if you or a colleague is struggling, please remember that as a Norse employee, you have access to free, impartial and compassionate support through the Employee Assistance Programme by Health Assured.
I hope you enjoy reading the articles featured in this issue. I would love to know what you think and welcome your feedback. Let me know your thoughts and drop me a line at justin.galliford@norsegroup.co.uk.

the Editor
Welcome to our wellbeing edit!
This issue is all about New Year, New Goals, and we’re starting strong with lots of practical help, advice and resources to help you with your wellbeing.
Most of us start the year with good intentions. We usually want to join a gym, eat healthier, spend more time with loved ones, travel more – the list is endless. But most resolutions tend to fizzle out a few days after starting them. I don’t know about you, but I often think of the start of a new year as my chance to hit the reset button and to start afresh. So, if you’re looking for some healthy habits for 2023, turn to page 6.
Research shows that listening to uplifting music can lessen the impact of depression and anxiety. So we asked some of our colleagues to share their favourite go-to tracks and created our own wellbeing playlist on Spotify. Scan the QR code on page 15 to download and listen to them!
On page 20, you’ll find our wellbeing calendar for 2023. Check with your manager to find out what local events are planned in your business area. If you’re feeling inspired, why not hold your own fundraising event?
I really hope you enjoy reading our articles and features. Perhaps you’ll be inspired by some of our employees who have shared their perfect escapes when they’re not at work. Or maybe you’ll be one of the lucky winners of our wellbeing competition.
So what does 2023 have in store for you? Get in contact and share your stories with us!

Wellbeing isn’t just a buzzword, it’s a way of life! We delve into some of the healthy habits to help kickstart your 2023.
TOPIC: WELLBEING
After the festive period, when we’re used to indulging a little more than usual, the chance to refresh is often a welcome relief. While the New Year’s celebrations are now a distant memory, you’ve probably decided to make some positive changes and introduce some healthy habits into your life.
Perhaps you want to cut down on the caffeine (crazy, right?) and drink more water. Maybe you want to do more exercise and improve your fitness. Or is this the year you finally decide to learn a brand-new skill or revisit a longforgotten talent?
As you’ve probably noticed, this issue is dedicated to all things ‘ wellbeing,’ so we’re making it our mission to help you make the best possible start to 2023!
PRIORITISE SLEEP
Do you get the recommended amount of sleep each night? According to the NHS, adults need at least 7 to 9 hours of restorative sleep a night. Not getting enough sleep can cause you to feel tired during the day and can impact how you go about your daily life. Check out page 22 for sleep tips!
DIGITAL DETOX
Endless scrolling on social media and checking your emails at all hours isn’t healthy. Excessive screen time can have a detrimental effect on your mental health. Instead, why not try a digital detox. Limit how long you spend on social media apps for a healthy habit.
DECLUTTER YOUR MIND
Meditation is a proven stress reducer and mental health booster. Even just five minutes can allow you to clear your mind and focus on the present. If you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of mindfulness apps that can help you stay healthy and happy.
GIVE BACK
Giving back and volunteering for a great cause can be rewarding. Norse employees can apply to take up to eight hours a year paid time off work to volunteer. Talk to your line manager and give your time to a cause close to your heart!
CONNECT WITH NATURE
Getting outside and connecting with nature is proven to be good for you. Many of us spend our days in front of a screen or working indoors, so even going for just a brisk 10-minute walk can help you to refocus your mind, recentre and find calm.
GET ACTIVE
Whether you’re hitting the gym, getting in your 10,000 steps or simply adding an element of activity to your day, regular exercise is an excellent way to boost your wellbeing and mood. From ab crunches to Zumba, find an activity that you enjoy.
PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Creating a positive outlook on life can be beneficial to your mental wellbeing. Often, we go about our daily lives without taking time to selfreflect. So why not make 2023 the year you stop and reflect on things that have gone well for you and areas you can improve?
REDUCE YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE
According to Dry January, 70% of participants who gave up booze for 30 days had much better sleep, and 66% had more energy. In addition, reducing the amount of alcohol you drink in one month can help to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of diabetes and help improve your wellbeing.
INCREASE SOCIAL INTERACTION
Spending quality time with friends and family not only helps to boost our mood and is better for our mental health. Social interaction has also been shown to help lower the risk of dementia as it is good for brain health. Plus, having a good time and laughing improves positivity and reduces stress!

WE MET WITH ANDY TANSLEY, GROUP DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS (PARTNERSHIPS), AND CHATTED ABOUT HIS PLANS FOR 2023.
A Chartered Quantity Surveyor by trade, Andy has been a part of Norse Group for over 10 years, starting at Barnsley Council before he moved across to NPS Barnsley and then became the Partnership Director for Leeds NPS. Andy is married with two children and has recently become a foster parent.
OM: ANDY, WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
AT: I love spending time with my family. We enjoy doing activities together at the weekend, such as swimming, and I enjoy following football and playing golf when I get the chance. Also, my son likes ten-pin bowling, so I like supporting him and trying to get a strike or two!
WHAT ARE YOUR
FOR 2023?
GOALS
My main goal is to do over 60,000 steps per week, which I know doesn’t seem like a lot to some people. However, my current role requires me to travel around the country and attend numerous meetings, so that’s a lot of sitting down throughout the day.
WHAT’S YOUR MOTIVATION FOR ACHIEVING THIS GOAL?
I’m doing this to improve my overall fitness and increase my activity levels across the week. I’m keen to continue building on my health journey, and getting in the extra steps is a great way to do this.
HOW IMPORTANT IS MINDFULNESS TO YOU?
It’s something that I’m keen to focus on throughout 2023. Mindfulness will be a crucial part of my healthy lifestyle to manage my work/ life balance. We tend to let things get on top of us, so we need to stop, sit back, and take a moment to be in the present. So I’ve committed to doing 10 minutes of mindfulness daily to clear my mind.
WHAT TOOLS WILL YOU USE TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR DAILY MINDFULNESS?
I’m a big advocate of getting outside and going for a walk, it’s excellent for clearing your mind. So I’ve downloaded a mindfulness app on my phone and plan on listening to podcasts whilst walking and travelling.

In 2022, over 600,000 people joined the plant-based revolution and signed up for Veganuary. With more people going vegan for health and lifestyle reasons, here are five health benefits of going vegan:
Rich in vital nutrients
Replacing meat and animal products with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and pulses will give you a higher daily intake of beneficial nutrients.
Improve your mood Studies show that vegans had better scores on depression tests and mood profiles than those who follow an omnivorous diet.

Let’s start talking about menopause!
It’s no longer the taboo subject that it used to be. Over 75% of women experience menopause symptoms, including brain fog, hot flushes, and joint pain, to name a few. However, in the workplace, menopause still isn’t openly discussed, as symptoms can be personal and sometimes embarrassing. But at Norse Group, we want to start the conversation. We don’t want our colleagues to suffer in silence.
That’s why Norse Group have started to hold our own Menopause Cafés aimed at breaking down the stigma around menopause and increasing awareness of the impact of meno pause on those experiencing it, their family, friends and colleagues.
Initially started in Perth, Scotland, in 2017, The Menopause Café charity has since spread worldwide, with volunteers now hosting events
in the UK, Bahrain, Mexico, USA, Austria, and India. Our first Menopause Café took place in Norwich at the end of January, and we welcomed a mix of employees and members of the local community. One of the attendees told us, “I feel less alone, and it’s nice to know that other people are going through the same type of experience as me.”
The purpose of Menopause Cafés is to offer a safe space that encourages discussion and is open to all ages and genders. There are no talks, no experts, and discussion topics are chosen by participants.
Following the success of our first Menopause Café, we’re now looking to take them around to other Norse Group locations later in the year. Please scan the QR code to register your interest in one of our future events. If you’re not based in Norwich or can’t make it to our events, visit menopausecafe.net to find other events.

SHOW YOUR HEART SOME LOVE
Valentine’sDayisn’tjustacelebration
Did you know that heart disease is one of the biggest killers in the UK?
One in four men and one in five women will die from a heart disease-related illness. However, by making a few minor changes and adjusting your lifestyle, you can significantly lower your risks of developing heart disease.
To coincide with Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, 14 February, Healthy Heart Day is a reminder to look after your heart and raise awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. From making heart-healthy food choices to getting more active, you can do plenty of things to put your heart first.

HeartHealthy Tips:
FITNESS FIRST
The British Heart Foundation suggests you complete 150 minutes of activity weekly, roughly 30 minutes a day, and try to work out at an intensity where you can still hold a conversation.
Great exercises include walking, swimming, running, cycling, and yoga. Changing your daily routine to include taking the stairs instead of the lift is a great way to start.
For further helpful advice to improve your heart health, check out page 30.
A healthy diet can help reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease and stop you from gaining weight, reducing your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.
Keep your diet high in fruit, veg and whole-grain foods, as well as low in red meat. And reduce your salt and fat intake and swap high-fat snacks like crisps, cakes and biscuits for fresh or dried fruit and raw veggies instead.
QUIT SMOKING
Research shows that if you quit for 28 days, you’re five times more likely to quit smoking for good.
The sooner you quit, the sooner you’ll notice the difference. After 48 hours of not smoking, all carbon monoxide is flushed out of your system. After 2 – 12 weeks, your circulation will improve. And after 3 – 9 months, breathing problems will be enhanced as your lung function increases by up to 10%.

Last summer, we launched ‘Our Voice’, our new employee engagement initiative.
The forum is represented by a core group of employees with a passion and enthusiasm for engaging with the business to improve people’s lives.
Held three times a year, the purpose of the forums is to support clear and consistent communication across the organisation that all employees can access, to capture employee feedback on key projects, and to ensure there is a forum for issues and solutions to be discussed collectively.
Our Voice has three main objectives:
To provide all attendees with a group business update from the CEO and to receive a good understanding of current business matters during the relevant period.
To empower employees with the opportunity to influence matters that affect them at work and to be engaged with projects across the wider group.
To provide employees with the opportunity to communicate feedback to the business on key business issues and collectively discuss solution-based resolutions for consideration.
At the time of going to print, the January forums had all taken place, so we’ll have feedback on the actions and outcomes of those meetings over the coming weeks.

WORLD SLEEP DAY
Catching some zzzs, forty winks, nodding off, whatever you call it, sleep plays an essential part in our daily lives. However, it’s the quality of your sleep that really makes a difference.
It’s not just the duration; sleep also depends on being seamless and uninterrupted and deep enough to be restorative. Stress, work and financial pressures all have a negative impact on sleep.
World Sleep Day 2023 takes place on Friday, 17 March, and this year’s theme is Sleep is Essential for Health. And just like eating well and exercising, sleep is a behaviour that is vital to our physical, mental, and social well-being.
Our tips for getting some essential shut eye
ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP:
PUT YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES AWAY
The blue light emitted from smartphones, tablets and computers can disrupt your natural circadian rhythm and make your brain think it’s still daytime.
REDUCE YOUR CAFFEINE INTAKE
Did you know that it can take up to 10 hours to completely clear caffeine from your bloodstream?
So, stay hydrated with water, or switch to a decaf version!
CREATE A RELAXING ENVIRONMENT
Calming activities like taking a bath, reading a book or meditating can help you relax. Also, keep bedrooms dark, cool and quiet
INCORPORATE EXERCISE INTO YOUR DAY
Regular physical activity throughout the day can help to promote sleep; however, avoid exercising before going to bed.

COULD YOU BRAVE THE SHAVE?
Norwich-based Sarah Purvis and Kris Hoath both took on their own personal challenges to Brave the Shave for MacMillan Cancer Support in October 2022
SARAH PURVIS
FINANCE MANAGER SARAH PURVIS BRAVED HER SHAVE IN OCTOBER IN FRONT OF HER COLLEAGUES AT THE FIFERS LANE OFFICE IN NORWICH AND RAISED £2696
SARAH, WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BRAVE THE SHAVE?
MacMillan has really helped and supported my friends and family over the years. Recently, a close friend’s husband was diagnosed with cancer, and I was inspired to raise money for a worthwhile cause.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO BRAVE THE SHAVE AT WORK?
My colleagues have known that I’ve wanted to do this for some time, and to help me reach my fundraising goals, they even held a Halloween Bake Sale and Fancy-Dress event on the day of my shave.
HOW NERVOUS WERE YOU WHEN IT WAS TIME TO BRAVE THE SHAVE? Honestly, I was terrified, but everyone was so kind and supportive. To keep my nerves at bay, I focussed on work right up until the shave. I remember being shocked that the whole office had come to see the shave. My wonderful colleague Sally Hollis and Tracey Bane even helped to shave my head.
It was such an emotional experience, and I cried when I started to see my hair fall into my lap, but throughout, I focussed on why I was doing it.
HOW DID YOU FEEL AFTERWARDS?
I felt proud and privileged that I could raise so much money in the current economic climate. I’m so grateful to all my colleagues for their support during and after the event.
FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE THINKING OF DOING THEIR OWN BRAVE THE SHAVE? Definitely do it, as it’s for such a great cause. People tend to forget how much support MacMillan nurses give to those affected by cancer.

“SHAVING MY HEAD WAS SUCH AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE.”

KRIS HOATH
ASSISTANT PAYROLL BUSINESS PARTNER KRIS HOATH DECIDED THEY WOULD TAKE ON THE BRAVE THE SHAVE IN HONOUR OF A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER AND RAISED £910.
KRIS, WHY IS THIS CAUSE SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?
Supporting Macmillan’s Brave the Shave is close to my heart because I, unfortunately, lost my auntie in October 2020. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer and lost her battle after 10 years. So I wanted to honour her two-year anniversary by shaving my hair for charity.
WHAT DID YOUR FAMILY THINK WHEN YOU TOLD THEM WHAT YOU WERE PLANNING?
Put your image here
My family were all incredibly proud of my determination to do this in memory of my auntie and fully supported my decision.
YOU BRAVELY DID YOUR SHAVE IN PUBLIC AT TESCO. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?
It was totally surreal, but I was surrounded by all of my old work colleagues and felt so supported throughout. It was daunting doing the shave in the middle of a supermarket, but it was such an empowering feeling knowing why I was doing it and the great cause I was raising. I was terrified on the day of the shave, and keeping the nerves at bay was hard.
HOW DID YOU FEEL AFTERWARDS?
I felt amazing afterwards. Doing Brave the Shave helped me in ways I wasn’t expecting, and I had a gender euphoric moment. It really helped my wellbeing and was a positive ‘money can’t buy’ outcome.
NOW THAT YOU’VE COMPLETED YOURS, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE THINKING OF DOING BRAVE THE SHAVE? Just do it! It’s daunting, but knowing that you’re supporting a great cause and helping raise money for Macmillan nurses and their incredible work is a great feeling.
Just £126 could pay for a Macmillan support worker for 1 day, helping people living with cancer receive the support they need.
Sir Douglas Macmillan founded the charity in 1911 after his father died from cancer.
An incredible 98% of Macmillan’s work is funded by donations raised by supporters.
Around 811,000 people receive person -to-person support from one or more Macmillan services.
Around 3 million people in the UK live with cancer, and over 360,000 more are diagnosed each year.
“IT REALLY HELPED MY WELLBEING AND WAS DEFINITELY A POSITIVE MONEY CAN’T BUY OUTCOME.”

NORSE GROUP BRAND PROJECT
Following the appointment of Justin Galliford as Norse Group’s CEO in May 2022, we have decided that it is time as an organisation to solidify our values, culture, and brand. Borne™ will help us develop a strategically led, creatively-focussed brand that will allow us to have a robust future within the market.
Over the past few months, Borne™ has been working closely with Norse Group employees from across all business areas, partners and clients, undertaking ‘listening’ exercises to
understand what they currently feel about Norse as a brand.
The brand project will be Groupwide, not just externally with our clients and end-users, but importantly this will begin internally with our valued and dedicated employees.
We will keep you updated on this project over the coming months as we start on the next part of this exciting journey.

As you may be aware, last September, we announced that we would be working with Norwich-based creative agency Borne™ on an inspiring brand project.

Clare Jordan, Marketing Manager for Norse Catering, said: “It has been a pleasure bringing Norse Catering’s Flourish Pledge to life. It is so important to listen to our young customers and have engaging conversations about school meals, food, health, and nutrition.”
Before the catering team finalised their Autumn/Winter menu, they ran taster sessions with children from a few of their sites. According to their research, 84% of children liked their new homemade veggie burger, and 77% of the children would choose it on the menu. Of the children who tried the new mixed berry sponge cake, 100% liked the taste, and 92% would choose it on the menu.
From the student council sessions, Norse Catering noted they had an ‘overwhelming’ number of requests for tacos, so they ran a successful street food menu in October.
Within Business Support Services, we’re looking for individuals with passion, energy and drive to join our Finance and HR teams. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of Norse Group’s change and transformation programme.

When Lindsay, a customer based in Havant, contacted the Corporate Communications team asking if we had any branded toy bin lorries for her young son, she had no idea that two teams across Norse would work together to make it a special birthday surprise.
Ryder, who was turning two, is non-verbal, has disabilities, and loves watching and waving at the crew on
Charene Botha organised a bin lorry toy and coordinated with the on-duty crew to surprise our young customer with his card and gift on their next round. Little Ryder loved his present and even got a sneak peek in the dust cart.
Huge thanks to Craig Pearce, Charene Botha, Kieran Hammond, Paul Gissing and the crew, Paul, Nigel, and Ralph, for going above and beyond for Ryder!
We are currently piloting a project working with HMP Wayland, a Category C men’s prison, to see how we can recruit ex-offenders and help to improve their career prospects once they leave.
