ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH

ERIC

I am here with Eric from the FOLK. First off, I would just like to say I see your shirts everywhere, and I love them! Where did you get the idea from? The idea started 2 years ago with just hats saying THE FOLK. I lived in Ottawa while at school, and I always said, "I live in the folk.” Where are you located? We are located all over small stores in Norfolk. Our thing is to support small businesses. What types of shirts do you have?

Will you do holiday shirts? We did last year, but it was a lot of work. I had to hand paint light bulbs onto the shirts, which took a very long time and effort, so we are looking at other designs to come up with. How much are the shirts? The Canadian shirts are $35 for a T-shirt, $40 for a long sleeve, $55 for a crewneck and $60 for a hoodie. Where can people find you guys? You can find us on Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram and Twitter @TheFolk.ca We plan to keep building and building our brand. I want to thank you for your time today Eric. Make sure that you check out THE FOLK shirts and other items at local businesses around town!

We have T-shirts, hats, hoodies, long sleeves and mugs. Do you have any products with THE name on them?

other FOLK

Yes, we partnered up with a brewery to make a beer for the fair, which did really well and sold out really quick.

LITTLE THINGS TOO “I made decisions that I regret, and I took them as a learning experience. I’m human, not perfect, like anybody else.” ~ Queen Latifah “If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.” ~ Will Rogers Is old age a time of regret? We hope not and must do what we can to not let it be. It is inevitable that we did things through inexperience, expediency or lack of time to be our best selves. What we can always do is try to learn from our past. I think it is good that I am never satisfied with myself. I live a more worthwhile life when I am pushing or being pushed, although that may not be true for everyone. Some actions can be rectified, and some cannot. Juta and I had been married for only two years when, following her father’s sudden death, we took his dog. I don’t remember that we talked about it; we simply knew that was what we should do. Juta and her sister had picked out a very young pup, some kind of lab/ hound mix, at the Toronto Humane Society and had given him to their parents when they retired and moved to their cottage permanently. The property was in an Estonian enclave north of Uxbridge. There were no through roadways, and the pup roamed freely around the 300 acres, with everyone getting to know and love him. When Pointu (Estonian for Rover) was two years old, he became our dog. Of course, he was already familiar with us, and the transition was easy. I walked him around the boundary of our five acres which were bordered by farm fencing. He was soon loose and free on his own. He could get through the fencing if he had the will, but that happened infrequently. He was gentle and happy to be at home, whether we were with him or off at work. Once again, he developed a wide group of human friends. He was smart and, as always, loved by all. Outdoors, he would run around the flower and vegetable gardens, rather than through them,

when chasing a rabbit or squirrel. Indoors, as per Juta’s wishes, he would never go in the living or dining room. He knew he wasn’t allowed on the furniture. I do remember one time though, in the winter, when I arrived home after work. Our sofa was under the living room window, and the house was fairly close to the road. As I drove by the house, I saw him standing up on the sofa, looking out the window. When I came in the front door, he was asleep on the mat just inside. Or so he wanted me to believe. I said he was smart. Another time, many years later, Juta’s aunt and uncle came to visit us in Georgetown. When Pointu went to the road to greet them, he was given a cookie out the window. A year later, they came back to see us. When Juta’s uncle opened the car door, the dog jumped right in, ready for another treat. In the winter, we would go cross-country skiing in the nearby Vivian Forest on weekends, mostly with groups of friends who would stay for one of Juta’s dinner feasts. She and the dog would always break trail at the front of the pack. In the summer, he would run on the trail with us or go off to swim in the pond. He tagged along when Juta and our neighbour would go horseback riding on the trails. Those were good long workouts. He loved being at our cottage as well, hanging out with everyone, running on the marina road or along the hydro line with me, swimming with anyone, or standing on the front seat of the boat for trips into or out of the marina. Occasionally, he added in his own solo adventures. One time we got a call from the pound in a town thirty miles from us. Pointu had eagerly jumped in the back of the dogcatcher’s van when summoned. Another time, one winter when Juta was away in England, he wasn’t home when I arrived from work. Every night when I returned home, I would walk or drive the local roads looking for him without success. I didn’t contact Juta. I just hoped. About a week had passed, and then one night, as I turned into the driveway, I saw him. There he was, lying by the front door. You can imagine my complete joy. He was battered and hungry but recovered over the next few days. I concluded that he had been kicked by a neighbour’s horse and had gone somewhere by himself to heal, although I never found out. So when I reminisce, I know we had a dog who lived a long, full and happy life. But I began by discussing regrets. Pointu had his collar on almost all the time, day and night. The white on his neck eventually became discoloured. Occasionally I

would take the collar off to wash it and try to clean his neck. He absolutely loved getting his neck area rubbed and would stand still for as long as I was willing to give him the special attention. My regret – since he liked having the collar off so much, why didn’t I take it off every night when he was inside to stay? I don’t know. I never thought of it. I now have a boxer, Maisie. Every night when she comes in for the final time after dinner, I say, “Maisie, I’ll take your collar off.” She stands still, it’s removed, and I give her neck a good rub. She then trots off to bed. Every night when I take that collar off, I think of both dogs, and I smile to myself.

Lest We Forget

Honouring the Teachings of Those Who Raised and Fought For Us BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

Discover what resonates with you from a fully educated standpoint, one that has a 360-degree view, not something that our numerous AI (artificial intelligence) sources give us from the algorithms we have actually created! It’s very easy to believe our own view is the only view when that is the information that presents itself quite miraculously! Dig deeper! The more we learn, the more we discover how little we know about anything! I love researching! You taught us to honour our belief systems and that it’s okay to be yourself and still respect others. Trust yourself, maintain a healthy perspective, and your opinion should be educated and, more importantly, asked for before sharing. Be honest, work hard, value family above all else. Don’t litter. If it’s not your property, stay off of it and leave it alone. With an amazing, close and very expansive extended family, blessed with siblings, multiple sets of grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, there are so many memories and experiences to honour and share from each of these people. I think of the legacies created, traditions passed down and that each of these generations actually fought for something on our behalf and to build a better future. Unique challenges and freedoms that we take for granted because our perspective is not what their reality was. Dad, you taught me that fear and anger are the worst of leaders and that they walk arm in arm, breeding hostility and discrimination. Education, empowerment, caring for and respecting others will illuminate the path to safety and reason. Autumn musings can be melancholic, but it would seem from a significant number of conversations that a great many are also wondering what we are missing and letting slip away amongst the confusion. Those on the front lines of Health Care are witnessing the distress and cost to our communities as friend and family disharmonies are obvious. Many are asking whether horrible expanses of history are at risk of repeating themselves on this slippery slope. It is a lot to think on, and I hope you were able to read with an open heart and head. I thank you for allowing me to share, honour and remember. At Dover Apothecary, we will continue to be a professional support system to our communities. Our goal is to provide evidence-based, pro-health care, strategies and choices to assist with everyday health and lifestyle choices, nutrition, immune support and stress management options. Now it’s time to walk my dogs, hug a few trees, have a lovely cup of green tea with jasmine and call my children and grandchildren to tell them I love them. Thank you Dad, I miss you and I will not forget! xoxo

My Family, like all of yours, has withstood challenges. These last few years have presented us all with situations we couldn’t have imagined. Life events that typically draw loved ones and friends together, whether to celebrate, commemorate, honour or remember, joyous times or heartache, leave us feeling hollow. For those of us in the Health Care Professions that have any degree of empathy, it has been an especially trying time as we are not always able to allay the concerns and fears or answer the questions of those that turn to us. Right now, I miss my Dad more than ever – You would have been 80 this month. You never missed teasing Mom about being an older woman because her birthday is a month prior to yours. We are taking good care of this wonderful woman that was the love of your life. I miss your common sense, and quiet strength, your love of simpler ways, your respect for re-inventing uses for retired objects, upcycling years before it became a thing of necessity. More than anything, I honour your teachings every day: if you don’t know something, look it up, research it deeply and read more. T WENT Y THREE MARKET I PORT DOVER, ON I 519-583- 0999 I W W W.23MARKET.CA

Can you keep a secret? By Dave Scott Several years ago, I was thrown for a loop on one of my last visits with the late Ike Hewitt. I always knew Ike to be a fair, caring, tough human being, but the story he shared that day proved to me that he was one of the most empathetic human beings I have ever met.

Living as a POW during WWII had made Ike the man he was, and our friendship started when he was in his early 90's and continued to the day he passed. He was a humble man who served his country proudly.

Every time I visited, he would allow me to look at his journal. The photos, drawings, and writing always mesmerized me. One day, as I was looking at the journal, an old piece of paper fell out from the pages. I had never seen it before.

I opened it up. It was a neatly formed letter from a war vet that wanted to thank Ike for sending his family food after the war. The war vet in the letter stated that it was a tremendous help to his family! I have got to tell you, the letter was so touching. I showed Ike the letter and asked who the Canadian soldier was. Ike looked me in the eye and said, "Can you keep a secret?" "Sure," I said.

We then sat down, and he explained the following story to me.

Hitler had just ordered that all the airmen be executed in retaliation for the allied bombing of the German cities.

A German soldier told Ike of what they had been ordered to do and explained to Ike that he could never hurt anyone… and he hoped the German soldiers would

refuse. He told Ike that if they have to line up in front of him, he will shoot over Ike's head and that Ike should fall like he was shot.

Ike knew he couldn't let that happen and told a younger fella if it came to that, the younger POW should line up in front of that German soldier. Lucky for all involved, the German soldiers refused to follow the order!

A few weeks later, that same soldier asked Ike for a letter saying that he had spared Ike's life. You see, that soldier was being sent to the front, and if he got caught, he wanted the allies to know he was no killer. Sure enough, the soldier was captured. Because of Ike's letter and because the soldier spoke several different languages, he helped the allies in the war effort. When the war ended, the soldier was left with absolutely nothing, no home for his family, no food, his country was wiped out. He had to start over, so he sent a letter to Ike asking for help, and Ike did what he could.

I asked Ike why he had helped him. He looked at me and said the German soldier was just a man like him who needed help. I was left speechless. Ike saw a person with nothing and helped. It didn't matter who the person was, where he was from, his past, his ethics, what religion he was; he just helped! I wish there were a few more Ike's around today!

We as a world need to understand the value of helping one another. If a guy who was a POW survived a war and still had the empathy to help someone on the other side… what is stopping the rest of us? Ike, thank you for another life lesson. Miss you greatly!
