ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH

WENDY

WELCOME BACK, NORFOLK COUNTY FAIR! I am here with Wendy from publicity and marketing for the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show. How many years have we been celebrating the Norfolk County Fair? 181 years Are there any guidelines this year due to covid? There are plenty of guidelines that cover workers, volunteers and the general public at the Fair. The challenge for us is that the guidelines can and do change which makes planning difficult. We have been working with the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit through these changes, and they help us to interpret what the regulations are today. Right now, we are still in Step 3 of the provincial reopening plan, but with added measures that include masks, contact tracing and capacity limits. There are custom rules for outside and inside buildings. Even now, we don’t know exactly what they will be on the opening day of the Fair. I see the concerts are coming back. Will we see horses this year? Concerts are back and sold out in 17 minutes. The grandstands are closed, so only available to those that purchased tickets for the concerts. Yes, much of the horse show will be on. Check the daily schedule for times and shows! What will we be missing this year? Motorsports and Young Canada Day activities at the grandstands. Current limits and physical distancing do not allow all to participate.

How will the rides work? Pretty much the same as before except for covid safety protocols added. There will be more space for distancing. The pay one price deal for the rides is only available from the World’s Finest Shows booths at the Fair. Are all of our favourite food booths coming? Almost all of our food booths are back, but some have taken this year off. We’re in the process of confirming all. Will Bandaloni make an appearance? Yes, Bandaloni will be back. We also have some Buskers around the grounds as well as shows in the Recreation Centre. Will the Fair be running until Thanksgiving? The Fair is running for 7 days, October 5-11, and ending thanksgiving Monday. I am so glad that the Norfolk County Fair is coming back! "THIS, TH AT A N D THE OTHER" SPONSORED BY:

IN THE

LONG

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

MY MOURNING DOVE “A mourning dove’s beauty is an understated one.” Jonathan Miles “God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December.” J.M. Barrie A few weeks ago, I had to bury a mourning dove found on the grass. I don’t know what happened, but these birds have a high mortality rate. Seeds are their main source of food, and due to ground-feeding behaviour, they are often caught by predators, including cats, raccoons and opossums. I had been used to seeing a pair of the doves near the house. In the winter, they were the last to discover that I was filling the bird feeder once or twice a day. However, once they discovered it, they were regulars. I have always liked mourning doves. I enjoy that gentle cooing sound they make. The species gets its name from that mournful, sad-sounding call. For me, they have a certain dignity and don’t seem to demand attention. All winter, they would patiently wait their turn at the feeder or for the fallen seeds on the deck. They would often stay after the rush of other birds was over and contentedly clean up the remains, always eating close together, side-by-side. During all seasons, they are frequently settled in the branches of trees behind the garage or near the deck. If I come around the corner with my dog, they could be startled, causing them to fly up to higher branches or onto the roof. However, they never flew far away and would soon be back on the same lower branches. When the warm weather came, and full spring was upon us, I no longer filled the feeder. It then became their habit to spend time out front. Daily I would see them perched on the front gate or walking around near the end of the driveway. They would work a section of the front lawn, getting their seeds. Sometimes they would perch on the outer rim of the birdbath. I never saw or looked for a nest. I don’t know if any baby birds survived. The

percentage of young ones that survive is low because of the predators that also include other birds such as hawks and crows. The mourning doves have poor nestbuilding abilities. Eggs and babies often fall to the ground. Shortly after the burial, I began to notice the single dove, usually just looking out from the gate or standing on the driveway. I would see him or her most mornings when surveying the day from my front window. As time passed, he (I’ll call the remaining dove a he) became more active and seemed to get back to regular rituals in the same old places. But he was always alone. I took an interest in his welfare. I have learned that if they survive the first year, a normal lifespan is four to five years. Many mourning doves mate for life. It appears that the surviving bird feels the loss of a companion. The doves will eventually move on, some the same year, and will find a new partner. My mourning dove has not moved on. Yesterday, a beautiful, warm, summery September gift, I was doing yard work. He sat for over an hour on the edge of the birdbath, just staring out into the distance. It brought tears to my eyes. He has become a kind of friend of mine. He is not afraid of me. I am able to walk up quite close, and sometimes I talk quietly to him. We seem to share some of the same feelings. As I grow older, I know more people who have suffered loss, myself included. It is heart-wrenching for all of us. We have different ways of dealing with grief. Some of us are successful in moving on with our lives, and some of us are not. I believe it behooves us to try our best, to find what works for us and also to support our families, friends and acquaintances through their tough times as much as we can. I have somehow been blessed with, or have learned, resilience in my life. Being resilient does not mean you don’t experience suffering, stress and emotional upheaval. It is the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. It is having strength when needed. I think my strategy has several components. I have learned to keep gratitude at the forefront of my mind. I have learned it’s wise to lean on friends sometimes. I am able to experience and

appreciate the restorative powers of nature. In the final analysis, life is what you make of it. I am happy to see my mourning dove getting back into the swing of the old patterns and acting chipper much of the time. I hope he will find a new mate and that, in the future, I will see them going about their daily routines, side by side.

STOP, LOOK & LISTEN BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

body systems that can function at optimal levels for all varieties of physiology and functional levels. Our bodies want to be well. STOP, and think about that. What do you do to support this body you have been gifted with. Do you nurture or abuse this life you have been given? Using intuitive power as a guide, along with qualified professional guidance to help navigate the areas you are less familiar with, can be a great asset in your health care goals. After all, no one knows you, like you! Change can be uncomfortable initially because the unknown is often something we fear and avoid – we cannot grow without change, but we are never too old to learn new things! LOOK deeply into all aspects of your “self” and your life. What do you want, what do you need, what goals or dreams do you have, what tools or resources do you have or need? How can you help yourself, and who can help you meet these goals? LISTEN with your whole being to the signs, signals, feelings, wisdom, whispers and nuances of your body. It’s all there. Some of us tune in to the gentle murmurs, others wait until their body screams. When we respond quickly to the gentle tones, it is so much easier to bring our bodies back into harmony and balance. So many times, we are told there is nothing wrong. How many times have you experienced blood work and tests that have come back within “normal” parameters? Yet we know that something is off because we know our bodies and when something is out of the ordinary! It’s normal and “easy” to want a diagnosis and someone to “fix” us, to tell us to just take a pill and continue doing what we want to do. Personal responsibility for our health and well-being may be a very alien concept for some. What you may not realize is that your symptoms are opportunities to learn more and support our bodies on a deeper level. Don’t ignore your intuition. Don’t mask your signs and symptoms of dis-ease without getting another opinion or guidance. Suppressing mild conditions invariably creates more serious disfunction. Align with professionals that will work with you and your goals. Take a deep dive look at what you are doing to honour and serve your body. Yes, it can be hard work, yes, it may cost time, money and effort, but you are worth it! Taking care of yourself is the most important investment of your life! Value yourself as you value the other precious people in your life. You deserve to be the best version of you. At Dover Apothecary, we are here to support you in your health care goals. Contact me to book a Nutritional Consultation and discover ways to adjust your nutrient intake and lifestyle choices to better serve your unique needs.

If ever there was a safety lesson to apply to our everyday health, Stop, Look and Listen is the hallmark the one lesson that has all of the makings of a vibrant, energetic, fulfilling, abundant life. Our innate wisdom is a powerful force. It can work for or against us, dependent on whether we choose to lean into that intuitive power or choose to fight against it. As with most things “energy”, it can be difficult for us to conceptualize or define or “prove”. However, we do understand, and it cannot be disputed that all form of matter is comprised of “energy”. Knowing this, the higher the nutritive value we provide our bodies with, the better the payback we can expect from our bodies. Relationships and thought patterns will have a profound impact on our health as well because of the energetic patterns involved. This is a less tangible form of energy to contemplate and conceptualize, but no less important when it comes to our health. Our bodies want to resonate with health at the deepest levels of cellular energy. When we make choices that resonate within that “energetic force”, we are rewarded in a multitude of ways Increased energy and feelings of Barb Anstead NNCP: (519) 410-3544 | barb@healthywellandwise.ca well-being, better mental health,

Life's slow burn

By Dave Scott Photo by Isaiah Dowling

"Getting old sucks" seems to be a line I hear more often as my life slips by. I was camping recently with a group of fathers and sons, and one of the dads said that line. Now I have to admit that the thought has crossed my mind more than a few times lately.

I mean, everything physically is getting a little harder to do, and you notice and feel it! A few more aches and pains pop up for no reason, and you wake up in the morning and move slowly to make sure everything is still in the right place. I even noticed on this last trip that I was taking my time getting in and out of the canoe, no sense rushing!

You try to eat right, exercise, get proper rest, but time stands still for no man or woman. My kids are picking up my slack, which is nice, but it also makes me realize my youth is well in the rearview mirror.

On the positive side, as I sit here on a rock overlooking Misty Lake as a family of loons slowly saunter by in the morning mist, while the

sun penetrates the far shoreline in a fiery glow, my soul is calm. I breathe deeply, and my eyes catch a fish as it jumps. The ripples that follow are all that move on this still morning. The reflection of the trees upon the water reminds us that nature adheres only to itself. Rocks jet out like puzzle pieces missing their corners, a dead tree hangs aimlessly over the edge of a small cliff, the pines around it stand tall, honouring their fallen friend.

It's crazy how just a touch of nature can revitalize the soul from within. I guess getting old isn't so bad! Nowadays, I take the time to look around and absorb more of the world as it goes by...

Getting old raises our awareness, humbles us, puts things in perspective and allows us to look at life, understand, respect and enjoy those beautiful, peaceful moments. It pours us a small sip from our fountain of youth to savour a few more times. Youth is restored for a fleeting moment as I think, I can't wait to go for a swim today!

Helping build a better community. 9 JAMES STREET, SIMCOE • 519-426-0791
