Gardens & Family By: Dave Scott As I walked my rather large husky puppy around the Scott estate, okay, around our property. I marvelled at the assortment of wildflowers, plants and berries that were growing and flourishing in our surroundings (the husky loves to eat the raspberries, by the way). I could not quite put my finger on what was trying to break through from the back of my mind, but something seemed rather melancholy about the whole situation. I decided to just enjoy the beauty and not overthink the situation. The bright colours of yellows, purples and reds, along with the many busy, buzzing bees seemed to fit nicely with the warm summer day.

The thought of that afternoon continued on for a few days until it finally hit me. My mind went to the gardens that my great grandfather had in his backyard in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s!

Now his were extremely well-groomed and in very straight lines, with brilliant colour, an assortment of this, that and the other thing, plus a veggie garden out behind the flowers. It was a mini maze that you could walk around and take in the beauty! To the side, behind the house, stood the old rickety, with a slight tilt, garden shed. It was wood-sided and faded, with (I think) a dirt floor and a big old squeaky door. There were tools and garden gear (old-school implements of destruction) to get the work done, all by hand, of course! A proud cherry tree stood alone off to the side. The cherries were the base for a very fine cherry

wine that many family members will remember. I am sure my uncle still has the recipe!

For a little while, I was paid to cut the lawn. I have got to tell you that it was the most cautious cut I ever did. There was no way I was going to chop any of those flowers down. I was petrified to get too close to the edge of the gardens, so ultimately, the lawn ended up with a really poor haircut.

My great grandfather never complained about the cut. In fact, one day, out of the blue, as we were looking over his gardens, he handed me my very first Swiss Army Knife! As a fishing family out of Dover, you always had a knife. This was my first knife and a Swiss Army at that! I think the smile did not leave my face for a week! I still have that knife locked away for safekeeping, and every time I pick it up, I think of my great grandfather!

The mind is an amazing thing. All those memories came back with one walk on our property as I enjoyed the wonder of growth. Thanks, Charlie Gamble, for quietly teaching me about the beauty within the garden, which I now understand! The knife, well, maybe it was the start of me becoming a young man in his eyes, and in my eyes, it showed me that he cared.

RUN By CHARLIE UPSHALL

OLYMPIANS ARE HUMANS TOO I have been enthralled by the Summer Olympics ever since the Games were first televised, from Rome in 1960. I have watched the action whenever I could. In 1976, I attended the Montreal Games for a few days, sleeping in my VW Beetle, no small feat in itself. The 2020 Games took place in Tokyo in August, having been postponed last year and likely now to be remembered as the Covid Games. Both organizers and participants were presented with many challenges, including stringent protocols and no paying fans in attendance at the events. But television coverage was extensive and these Olympics were rescued by the athletes, with magnificent performances and fascinating stories. Perhaps the most interesting story is that of American Simone Biles, widely considered the greatest gymnast of all time. She came to Tokyo as the most hyped and promoted of all the athletes, the most marketed face. In her opening event, the team competition, on her first vault, she got what is known as the “twisties”, where she basically got lost in the air. Her immediate decision was to pull out of the competition. Biles explained that she wasn’t in the headspace required to perform and felt it would be better for her and her team if she were replaced. The team, expected to win the gold, went on to finish second. Simone stated that she was going to focus on her well-being. It could not have been an easy decision. She has dedicated her life to competing in the Olympics, and the pressure on her to stay in was enormous. Support from her teammates and from the gymnastics athletic community was immediate and heart-felt. They understood the pressure and the physical danger inherent in their sport when you are not in complete control. But there was a backlash from certain members of the media and, of course, from an unknowledgeable public. She was called selfish, a quitter and a choker. At the 2016 Rio Games, the USA easily won gold in

the team event, and Simone won 4 gold medals overall. The pressure on her to repeat was immense. The real story of her attempt to repeat is complex. In 2018, the long-time USA Gymnastics national team doctor pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault of many team members, most of whom were minors at the time of the abuse, including Simone Biles. He is spending the rest of his life in federal prison. Biles was at the forefront of the athletes who had fought against an earlier settlement that would have prohibited lawsuits and stopped further investigation into an original cover-up by team officials intended to protect the doctor from prosecution. Biles stated prior to the recent Games that a big reason for returning was to try to hold governing authorities in her sport accountable for enabling the doctor and failing to protect the gymnasts. She believed that hers could be a voice to help change happen. Simone had a lot to handle before the Games even began. She is only 24 years old. Simone explained her decision to opt out of the team event saying, “I am going to focus on my well-being. I am more than just a gymnast.” She tweeted, “The outpouring love and support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics, which I never truly believed before.” She has taken the lead in her own mental health journey, and she had the strength to make her withdrawal decision in the moment. This incident may be remembered as an important marker of society’s acceptance of mental health issues as real and contribute to greater empathy for figures we want to admire. After her decision, Simone had to deal with the fallout of letting people down. We like to imbue our sports stars with superhuman qualities. Maybe now we will learn to appreciate that they, too, are merely human beings with their own frailties, weaknesses and challenges. Maybe our athletes will be supported when they need to take time to focus on themselves, rather than ignoring their own health to try to fulfil the expectations of the outside world. As Biles stated, “I just feel we have to focus on ourselves as humans, not just athletes, because I feel like we lose touch of our human feelings sometimes. I feel like athletes kind of suppress their emotions and how they’re feeling, but at the end of the day we’re not just entertainment, we’re humans. And so I think people forget that.” Throughout the rest of the gymnastics competition, Simone was medically evaluated every day and met with sports psychologists twice. She was cleared to compete in the final event, the balance beam, and won the bronze medal.

We have to learn to accept that athletes also have the right to prioritize their own health and must not be regarded as some sort of superior beings. Simone Biles does not owe anyone else anything. Back in the day, when I was racing, before the emergence of the now ubiquitous real-time reporting, if I had a bad race and didn’t wish to talk about it, I simply didn’t tell anyone. The results didn’t appear until months later in running magazines, by which time it was old news. But nowadays, even at my level, onlookers can follow many of the races in real-time. Our results are exposed immediately whether we like it or not. In my view, our world would be a better, happier place if we simply accepted other people for who they are.

FIGHT, FLIGHT OR FROZEN? WHERE ARE YOU NOW? BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

Life is ever-changing, everevolving, yet currently, on a global level, we are in times of perhaps some of our greatest unrest and uncertainty. As a Natural Nutritional Clinical Practitioner in my home office, and in my role with the great members of Dover Apothecary, I’m doing my best to encourage and support others in their health care goals. My own observation is that the more people I speak to, the more obvious it has become that people are struggling immensely with being in a state of “Fight, Flight or Frozen”. Each of these states can affect us on all levels and in all areas of our lives. Any of the above could have either positive or negative effects on the overall quality of life and health - from action taking and positive changes to destructive and detrimental choices. By nature, we have primal, builtin responses that surge chemicals and hormones throughout our brain, body, and nervous systems to give us surges of energy and power to make split-second, sometimes life-saving power to do that which might otherwise be impossible. If you are confronted with a situation that threatens your life, many systems kick in

simultaneously to give you the ability to face and fight or to run away. This immediate stress response can give us the power to fight off danger or use a burst of typically unavailable physical power to protect ourselves or a loved one from an immediate perceived threat. Our pain threshold is increased as endorphins and adrenaline flood our systems along with other physiological and functional phenomena. The Flight response will engage in situations where our brain tells us the best outcome to ensure survival in a situation is to get out of the situation, fast! In modern society, our mental health is taking a serious hit!! We are inundated with signals, messages and information numerous times a day, at such a rapid pace. Small wonder that we can become completely overwhelmed and exhausted! This exhaustion takes a toll physically, mentally and emotionally, affecting not just our bodies but all levels of our relationships. When this goes unchecked, the stress can lead to or exacerbate other health conditions causing chronic, inflammatory health issues and dis-ease. This feedback system becomes most problematic when we become Frozen. We are not Fighting or Fleeing in this state of being Frozen; we are merely existing. As individuals, we have so much more power, so many more options, than to stand there like a “deer in headlights”, frozen despite the imminent danger. Frozen can also become a hiding place, an escape zone where we choose to step out of reality. It is more a state of submission, usually, because we have become numb and worn down or feel completely impotent. We may have tried both Fight and Flight but have run out of resources. STEP BACK TO MOVE FORWARD: The Fight or Flight responses can work for or against us depending on the tools we have available to utilize. Fight can take the form of impotent anger, lashing out at everyone and everything, leaving a path of destruction and misery. Stepping back can allow us space to recognize a potential situation “could” happen and then propel us to prepare a researched kit, tools or a plan of action to deal with any concerns. Now we have become educated and empowered. We aren’t dwelling on scenarios or fearing the possibilities, simply aware and ready for action. Taking care of our daily, overall health with sound practices such as high quality, nutritious food, water, adequate sleep, healthy relationships, fresh air, exercise, supplements where necessary, stress management, qualified health care etc, are all part of our Fight defence plan. Flight can take several forms, some healthy, some not. The tools for Flight can

STRESS AND HAIR LOSS

HAIR LOSS in women is something we have been hearing a lot about lately. Did you know that added stress in your life could be causing you to lose excess hair? On average, the adult scalp has approximately 100,000 hair follicles on it. The majority of the time, most of these follicles are in the growth phase, and some are in the resting phase. Extreme stress in your life (i.e. personal hardships, divorce, or Covid) can trigger a shift of more hairs into the resting phase, which means about 3 months later when the resting cycle is complete, you will notice a larger than normal volume of hair loss. While it is very alarming to see a lot of hair coming out in the shower, in your brush or on your pillow, the good news is this type of hair loss is almost always temporary. Slowly you will notice less hair falling out, and your hair will start to grow back, although unfortunately not as quickly as it fell out. However, not every type of hair loss is caused by stress, and if you notice bald patches or experience chronic hair loss, you should talk to your doctor.

Never too late

By: Dave Scott

People are kind of funny when it comes to retiring. A lot of folks feel that stability is the right choice for them. Staying put in one place, keeping change in check in order to maintain a balance for the rest of their lives. Their homes are paid for, and the family is close by. It is the perfect situation.

unloaded all but a few personal belongings. I think it was a freeing moment for him to realize nothing was holding him back. He could face a new way of thinking.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that approach, and it is what a majority of the population would want.

He told me if he finds a place that he connects with, well, he may just stay for a while!

They have worked hard and have earned the right to kick back, put their feet up and slow down a bit.

But let's look at the other side of the coin now.

I have a friend who is close to turning seventy, but you wouldn't know it. He keeps active and is always on the move.

He popped by for a few days to visit. He was embarking on a journey to drive across this great country and take it all in! His excitement was infectious. The planning of his trip was simple. If he wanted to stop somewhere and explore the area for a bit, he did. He put no time frames on his journey, but he understood his budget. He had sold his home and, for the most part,

The trip was one of self-discovery. As my friend pointed out, his life has had many changes in the last decade, and this is a new chapter with renewed self vigour! It was time to hit the open road and see what else was out there in life.

It was refreshing to see that youthful approach to life at this stage of the game, to see that sparkle in his eyes and a broad smile. He has his health, an open mind and the drive to look beyond everyday existence.

Life at times finds ways to hold us from seeing outside the norm because we as a society crave security, but we should allow ourselves freedom, perhaps to explore a few windows, to express those moments of, "I am doing this!"

Who knows how my friend's journey will turn out. He is out there living the way he wants to. Really, isn't that what life is all about? Enjoy the journey, my friend!
