Aging Easy

By: Dave Scott

I recently listened to a podcast that featured Dr David Sinclair from Harvard. His area of expertise was aging, and he and his team are working on ways to actually slow down the aging process and possibly reverse it. My first thoughts were, oh, we should not screw with the natural process! Then I listened to the whole podcast, and I admit it made me more receptive to the progress that the Sinclair lab is exploring. I pulled the following from the website for the simple reason it is explained in terms that most of us can understand. "The Sinclair lab is driven by the belief that humanity can do better and that everyone has the right to the best medical care and maximum lifespan, no matter their gender, social status, or age. Work by our lab and others has shown that the pace of aging is not inexorable or predetermined, but rather can be slowed and even reversed by a variety of approaches. These include activating the body's defenses against aging, deleting senescent (the condition or process of deterioration with age) cells, and reprogramming cells in vivo (within the living). In doing so, we can protect the body against and treat both rare and common diseases including mitochondrial diseases, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer."

Here is an example of what Dr Sinclair is talking about "If DNA is the digital information on a compact disc, then aging is due to scratches. We are searching for the polish. Our work has led us to identify reprogramming factors that we believe will enable us to reset a cell's epigenetic status (nongenetic influences on gene expression) and reverse its age. We have developed human-compatible viral vectors to deliver the reprogramming genes to specific tissues or the entire body, thereby causing cells to act younger and wounds to heal faster. Our current focus is on nerve regeneration and the reversal of other symptoms of aging. We see treatments being possible for companion animals and humans to dramatically improve their health and lifespan." I know this sounds a bit beyond our scope of life, but the reality is it could very well be the breakthrough treatment in saving lives down the road. In the meantime, it is up to us to keep our bodies as healthy as possible. Dr Sinclair made it very clear that we can be our own best aging adviser by simple exercising, eating properly, and getting enough sleep that in itself will take us a long way in life! This information will make us rethink how we look at aging and what solutions may be down the road! Check out the website below for more information. https://sinclair.hms.harvard.edu/research

What do the Kinsmen do for the community? The Kinsmen Club of Simcoe, through fundraising and charitable works, seeks to improve the lives of those living right here in our community. Major projects have included hospital wards and sporting venues, parks, playgrounds and accessible splash pads, affordable housing initiatives and more. More recently, we have focused our efforts on raising funds to support the most vulnerable in our community, focusing on food security, homelessness, women and children's services, and seniors living in isolation during the pandemic. What is your most successful fundraiser?

ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH KEN GALLAGHER I am here with Ken Gallagher,

Director of Marketing & Communications for the Kinsmen Club of Simcoe. Ken, how long have the Kinsmen been around? The Kinsmen Club of Simcoe has been serving the community since 1927 and are looking forward to marking our 95th Anniversary in May. Where are you located in Simcoe, and does each town have their own group? Kin Canada has more than 400 clubs in communities from coast to coast, including four in Norfolk County alone. Here in Simcoe, we have a dedicated meeting space within the Kin Villa Community located across from the Kinsmen Splash Pad on Windham Street. How many members do you have, and are there women in the club as well? We have been honoured to serve alongside the Kinette Club of Simcoe for more than 50 years, and together we are over twenty strong and growing.

We had great success with our fireworks sale and working admission at the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show, but I would suggest our bottle drives raised the most funds for the community in 2021. What are you working on now, and how has Covid interfered? Our ability to raise funds has certainly been impacted due to the pandemic, but as always, we find a way to serve, and our community always finds a way to support our efforts. We are looking forward with optimism to returning to a full slate of fundraising efforts and introducing a few new ones. Last year, we helped charter a new Kin Club in Delhi with close to 30 new members and, together with our friends in the Kinsmen Club of Port Dover, have big plans for 2022. Do you need volunteers? How can people help, and how do they contact you? We're always looking for volunteers and members. The best way to learn more is to message us through the Kinsmen Club of Simcoe Facebook Page or email us at simcoekinsmen@gmail.com. You can also learn more about Kin Canada by visiting our website at www.kincanada.ca. Thank you so much for your time, and keep up with the good work you are doing for our community! CHATTER More than once, I have been urged to "Live in the moment." This adage has never resonated for me, regardless of its applicability. That is not to say I don't frequently live in the moment. Although I realize there are situations in which it can be suitable, it is not a state I have ever felt any need to pursue. The reason is becoming clear to me as I read the book "Chatter", which is about the voice in one's head, why it matters and how to harness it. The author is Ethan Kross, one of the world's leading experts on controlling the conscious mind. He states that human brains have not evolved to be in the present all the time. Cutting-edge research has revealed that we spend one-third to one-half of our waking life not living in the present. When our brains are in their "default state", not completely engaged in an immediate task, they transport us to past events, imagined scenarios, and so on. When we slip away from the present, we talk to ourselves using the voice in our head. And we listen to what we say! The process can impact us positively or negatively, dependent on what the inner voice is telling us. When our voice is sending out positive messages, it guides and benefits us. Kross cites the example of Barack Obama using his internal conversations to maintain his moral compass. However, if our internal voices send out negative messages, particularly if they do so on a regular basis, it is called "chatter". There are seemingly infinite numbers of examples of beating ourselves up repeatedly over past occurrences. The slightest that comes to mind for me took place at a race. I couldn't remember the name of one of the ladies I was talking with when a runner pal came over to see me. I wanted to introduce her but awkwardly let the moment pass. I ruminated over my poor memory and lack of social skills for a year until I saw her again. I relived the scene with her and apologized profusely. She replied, "Oh, I don't remember. It must have been nothing." Inner chatter can be a curse, not a

blessing. It can put our performance, decision-making, relationships, happiness and health in jeopardy. We think about some negative occurrence, and we keep thinking about it over and over again, hoping to engage our inner coach but instead finding our inner critic. Why are some people more able to use their inner voices as ramps toward success, while for others, those voices become slides into dysfunction, degradation and despair? I spend most of my time by myself. My household includes only myself and my dog. As well, I train for my races almost entirely on my own. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have chosen to keep mostly to myself by shopping early in the morning, having few indoor visitors and never going to restaurants or events. It is of the utmost importance for my happiness, functioning and health that I have a positive inner voice because for large portions of every day; it is the only voice I hear. That is my choice. When the inner voice runs off course, chatter results. Our mind can then torment and even basically paralyze us. Paying attention to our inner voices is vitally important for our mental health. When chatter takes over, it can taint our experience and blot out everything else that is happening in our lives. Chatter can be so strong that our mind becomes defined not by what we are doing but by what we are thinking about. It can dominate our attention to the exclusion of almost everything else. Unfortunately, in today's world, social media has exacerbated the weight of chatter. It has made it more difficult to elicit empathy. On-line, the little physical gestures, expressions and vocal intonations that lead to empathetic responses in daily life are gone. It is more difficult to be lifted up by those with whom we are interacting. The passage of time is beneficial in helping us to manage our emotional lives. Generally, when we choose to interact with someone in person, excluding those in our immediate family or circle, we have to wait to see or to talk with them offline. During that waiting time, we are able to reflect on what we're feeling and often dial down our raw emotions. In the digital world, we are able to connect with others instantly, without allowing ourselves any time to think about what we are feeling or how we might respond. We can rant immediately. This immediacy is leading to negative ramifications for society as a whole. Chatter doesn't just hurt people in an emotional sense. The main instigator in keeping stress active until it becomes chronic is a negative inner voice. Chronic negative stress is a common feature of clinical depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Also, chronic stress can lead to a range of physical illnesses. Basically, chatter is what happens when we zoom in too close on something negative. We get too narrow a view of the situation, and we lose our perspective. The problem occurs when we are no longer capable of zooming back out. Zooming out is much more difficult during times of stress. Next month I will discuss some strategies to help us put some distance (zooming out) between our predicament and our inner voice. Learning how to gain psychological distance, that is, to take a step back, can be effective for helping us manage our chatter.

The Art of Being Happy!

By: Dave Scott I sat looking out my front window as the sun bounced off the snow on the towering pines in our yard; I couldn't help but smile. There is something so beautiful and straightforward about nature; your eyes can't help but be attracted to the feeling that this is life! Happy. Taking an evening walk under a starry sky, and again you have to marvel at the clarity that this is life. Happy. A morning run in spring along the flowing river, blue water bursting with white patches ruffling the rocks as the water flows over, the shoreline surrounded in green, as spring scents fill the air. Happy. As I age, I understand the simple happiness that nature can provide for us more than ever. We just need to stop and smell the roses!!! In my younger days, I found happiness in other forms as well. My main objection has always been to make others feel good about themselves and what they accomplish. For me, helping someone learn a new skill, achieve a new goal and see the excitement in their eyes is what made me the happiest! I coached different sports: hockey, baseball, basketball, kayaking, swimming, and running for years. A good coach understands the importance of building confidence within the athlete to achieve accomplishments beyond sports and in life! I have been fortunate in my life that way. With the Annaleise Crossing of Lake Ontario, I organised the on-water and shore team of people I respect and trust who helped Annaleise accomplish this amazing feat! A happy moment in time! The Chris Peters with Lisa Anderson Swim from Long Point to Port Dover was another magical team moment with everyone smiling.

Watching runners and swimmers, I helped train cross the finish line. Our NYCA years with my wife Monica and our kids provided the joy of helping families every day with the daycare, summer camps, and the cancer rehabilitation room for adults. All overwhelming days of joy! As a coach, one of the happiest moments I ever got to share was with my son. I had literally just had a heart attack, and my doctor advised me not to coach my son in a tournament that weekend. I told him (the doc) the bench was a place of calm for me while being in the stands wouldn't be! He reluctantly let me go on the bench. The next day my son was pulled down on a breakaway and came back to the bench asking me what he should do. I said the goalie goes down quick, fake the shot and when he is down, shoot upstairs. My son did just that and scored! I was over the moon happy for him! The next morning at breakfast, the reality of my situation hit me, and I began to cry, realising that if my heart did not start back up, I never would have had such a beautiful moment with my son! A happy moment. But, do you know what the ultimate happy days are? The first time your wife says, "I love you!" Your wedding day! The birth of your children is beyond measure - the best it will get! Now more than ever, we need to focus on the happy days to come and the ones that have passed. There are no guarantees in life, be happy for those around you and yourself. Share the happiness! As a long time popular Port Doverite, Dean Wells would say, "Be Happy!"

FROM THE CHAIR.

DID YOU KNOW the cold, dry air can zap the moisture out of your scalp and hair, creating a dry scalp, or worsening a pre-existing scalp condition? Most often in the winter months a dry scalp is an easy fix. Simply adjusting your products and hair care routine will usually solve the problem quickly. That is why at the Blade we strongly suggest Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner. In some cases, when you are really struggling with a more severe dry, itchy scalp, you might need to use a more targeted product, such as L'Oréal Professionnel Sensi Balance, which is a specially formulated shampoo for soothing and protecting sensitive scalps and helps to eliminate dryness. For more information or product recommendations come talk to one of our stylists, we are always happy to help! 355 Main St, Port Dover, ON N0A 1N0 www.bladesalon.ca 519-583-2021

METABOLIC MALFUNCTION Fuelled by CARB-AGE BARB ANSTEAD, Holistic Nutritionist

what we suffer from is because we are “stuck” or “broken” metabolically. In reality, the percentage of people with a true metabolic disorder is quite inconsequential (certainly not for those suffering), but numerically speaking! The rest are of us may potentially be suffering in a limbo land of “overburdened metabolic dysfunction”. Bodies suffering because of being overwhelmed by an overabundance of nutrientdeficient foods – too many calories, too little nutrition, most commonly a high level of “carb-age”. Metabolically, we are bearing witness (physically, mentally and emotionally) ailing while suffering the consequences of our food choice intake and lifestyle habits. Habits that are leading to and/or aggravating the diverse and ever-growing number of conditions the people in our populations know as chronic inflammatory conditions and chronic dis-ease. These problems show no mercy in sparing any age, ethnicity, financial situation etc. Processed and ultra-processed foods, especially carbohydrates, are taking a nasty toll on our health. Overburdened bodies can only cope with continued repair work processes for so long before the energy required needs to be diverted to more critically pressing processes – hormonal processes, vitality, energy and quality of life invariably begin to break down and cause us to suffer - bodies with chronic inflammatory challenges are not happy bodies to reside within. To have a rudimentary understanding of the basics of metabolism, please read below – this explanation is a brief excerpt from the Encyclopedia Britannica: metabolism, the sum of the chemical reactions that take place within each cell of a living organism and that provide energy for vital processes and for synthesizing new organic material. Living organisms are unique in that they can extract energy from their environments and use it to carry out activities such as movement, growth and development, and reproduction. As you can see, our metabolism is everything. It is so critically important that we understand that what we fuel our body with will most definitely have a profound influence on every facet of our overall health potential! I invite you to learn more and discover the best version of you. As a Natural Nutritional Clinical Practitioner and Metabolic Balance Coach, my experience with implementing the program personally has been very positive in such a short time, and I am so excited to share with others! You can speak with me at Dover Apothecary Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 1pm.

Warning, this article contains information that may improve your quality of life! I know most of you have heard me state continually that our bodies are an absolute miracle. The sheer number of check systems our body innately implements at any given moment, just to keep us alive, is something I find absolutely fascinating! Oftentimes, our bodies are making heroic efforts despite our best efforts to sabotage our own health (whether knowingly or unknowingly). When we have chronic health issues (perhaps suffering constantly in pain, experiencing low to no energy or feeling that time has become a cruel master for a variety of reasons), I have no doubt that you may find it frustrating or find it impossible to understand that your body is actually fighting hard for you every step of the way. Whether we support ourselves consciously or continually sabotage our systems with unhealthy habits, this happens. Just imagine your potential if you are aware of how you can be supporting yourself instead! Metabolically speaking, I have no doubt that we are in a very real global metabolic crisis.
