The Keryn & Ted Mathas Award for Professional Excellence The Keryn & Ted Mathas Award for Professional Excellence was established in 2012 and created to recognize Norfolk Collegiate faculty members who uphold the high standards in the Characteristics of Professional Excellence and demonstrate a strong commitment to Norfolk Collegiate, its students and its vision. The recipients are given a monetary award in recognition of their high standards and performance. The award may be used as the recipient sees fit. • Michelle McNaughton, third-grade teacher In addition to the Mathas Award for Professional Excellence, Ted and Keryn expanded their annual donation and created the Mathas Professional Development Grants to promote faculty growth in the areas outlined in the school’s Characteristics of Professional Excellence. The Mathas Grants provide funding for professional development activities that will increase our faculty’s expertise in current standards and best practices in their disciplines, project-based learning, technology integration, and other identified areas of focus for the school. The grants also support faculty summer projects that will transform a program or area of the curriculum in a significant manner that will be replicable across the wider school community. The first Mathas Professional Development Grants will be awarded in the 2014-2015 school year. Mathas is chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of New York Life Insurance Company, the largest mutual life insurer in the United States with more than $425 billion in assets under his management. Mathas is responsible for running all aspects of this Fortune 100 Company, including its domestic and international business operations.
