Police Search Cannabis

Grower's

HOME SALINAS, CA --- On Thursday morning, July 20, police rammed the front door open of Mike Hackett’s residence searching for drugs. The home is located in a nice neighborhood on El Paso Place. Officers searched his home and two SUVs, where agents removed marijuana, passports, binders and a digital camera as evidence. No arrests were made. Attorney Elisa Stewart of the Emeryville firm Stewart & Musell, which represents Hackett’s Riverview Farms in Salinas. She said she was the third attorney for Hackett to arrive during the course of the search, and the third to request a copy of the search warrant—and to not receive it. Tom Worthington,

Hackett’s criminal defense attorney, says officers refused to show him the search warrant, and would only allow him to speak to Hackett while an officer stood alongside them. He says an officer threatened to arrest him if he didn’t get off the property, and he thought breaking down the front door was an extreme measure: “I thought it was strong-arm tactics,” he adds. “Obviously, the authorities in San Benito County think he’s in violation of a law. We do not think he’s in violation of any law at all,” Worthington says. “My understanding is that if he has possession of marijuana, it is lawful possession of marijuana.” Worthington believes

the search is connected to Hackett’s arrest in Hollister on July 1; he was released on bail July 2, and has not been charged in

connection with that incident, stemming from an alleged bar fight during the Hollister rally, a motorcycle gathering.

Black Publishers Push for Report on Federal AD SPENDING By Stacy M. Brown (NNPA Newswire Contributor) The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is set to begin work on a report detailing advertising spending by federal agencies—particularly as it pertains to Black and Latino media companies. “After several senators joined our request, including Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, GAO sent us an update in February saying that the request would take about six months of work,” said Benjamin Fritsch, a spokesman for Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.), who first called for the report during a press conference with National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) members and representatives of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP). auditing, evaluation, and investigative services for Congress. Charles Young, the managing director of public affairs for the GAO acknowledged that the request for a new report was formally received in February. “Staffing was not expected to be freed up from existing work for several months and we now expect to begin the work in August or September,” Young said. In March 2016, Norton called on the office to issue a report on federal advertising contracts and subcontracts with minority-owned newspapers Publishers, See page 12A
