On behalf of Nordisk Panorama, the City of Malmö and Film i Skåne we welcome you to a festival designed for entertainment, inspiration, learning, networking and business with lots of fun and thought-provoking moments on the way.

A very special welcome to all film professionals from near and far. This festival builds on your work and aims to serve the films you will create in the future. It is a great honour and pleasure to facilitate your talent and professional ambitions.

The interest for Nordisk Panorama Film Festival has grown among the people living in Malmö, Southern Sweden and Greater Copenhagen over the past three years.

When putting together the 2016 festival programme, we have thought a lot about this and about meeting and nourishing this interest. We are aiming to occupy an even bigger place in the hearts and thoughts of the audience, as well as the film professionals, after this year’s festival.

We want you to feel that you are in a city and a region determined to explore creativity as a driving force in shaping the future; a future that holds a great place to live and

work for people with many different cultural backgrounds, talents and aspirations.

The Festival is boiling over with great films and a diversity of interesting activities and sessions made possible by funders and supporting partners; a veritable Nordic treasure house thanks to the filmmakers, and an exciting competition with jurors selecting the award winners. It is also an efficient and valuable industry meet-up thanks to all the film professionals bringing their business to Nordisk Panorama.

NORDIC MISSION

Nordisk Panorama has a Nordic mission in a time when everything is global.

Over the years the festival’s key missions has been to assist Nordic filmmakers in internationalisation. A majority of the films showing at Nordisk Panorama Film Festival in 2016 have been created through an international patchwork of partners, funders, distributors and broadcasters. And they are targeting an international audience.

This year’s display of great international Nordic films will take us on a journey into nuanced storytelling exploring human relationships as well as the political and sociological realities of the world we live in.

Our Nordic mission is to promote these great films internationally and assist them to achieve the best possible conditions for unfolding their creativity and business potential. The festival is the culmination of a year-round effort to promote the works of Nordic filmmakers in the documentary and short fiction genres.

Nordisk Panorama Film Festival is a unique meeting place, where the Nordic film industry touches base with an impressive line-up of

international decision-makers as well a fast growing public audience.

All the Nordic countries have strong film communities with solid values and a passion for exploring the unknown or the problematic.

We have a long lasting tradition for democracy and freedom of expression. But these are not values or privileges, which stand undisputed in the Nordic countries, merely something of great concern to most people in the region.

Nordisk Panorama Film Festival thus thrives to be a meeting place where creative and openminded people share stories, collaborate in partnerships, create value and have fun in the spirit of such fundamental positive Nordic values.

NORDISK PANORAMA Awards

NP Awards At Nordisk Panorama selected films compete in three sections: Nordic Documentary, Nordic Short Film and New Nordic Voices.

Constituting a true Nordic championship, the films in competition are selected from all five Nordic countries, representing the very best short films and documentaries recently produced in the region. The 50 titles in our three competition programmes for 2016 were chosen from 616 submitted films eligible for selection.

In addition to our three competion sections we also presents the NP Audience Award.

The audience can vote for any of the NP Audience Award Nordic short films and documentaries competing in the main competition programmes, and the new Nordic films in the special programmes, by using the voting cards handed out after the screenings. The NP Audience Award prize sum is €2,500€ and is sponsored by the City of Malmö.

To put together a competition programme is a challenge. In addition to the 50 competition titles we have selected another 50 for our special programme. The quality and diversity of films produced in the Nordic countries is high. There’s passion and courage, love and rage – and really good stories. We are really happy that the audience in Malmö and our distinguished international guests will have the opportunity to dive into this rich programme.

Through our master classes, seminars and special events we aim to give you depth and inspiration but also to celebrate artistic innovation, digital disruption and – more importantly than ever – freedom of speech.

This year we have put together a special audience-in-focus programme playing around the city, including Pool cinema, Knit-along cinema and Midnight cinema to mention just a few.

It is a delight and a privilege to screen all of the Nordic short films submitted to Nordisk Panorama. Making the selections, however, is the agony that goes along with that ecstasy, and whittling down the competition and special programme titles was painful.

The short films being produced in the five Nordic countries set the standard for rest of the world and have easily provided the most stimulating challenge of my programming career. I am drowning in excellence and spoiled by choice. In this Olympic year, I hope you will be game to jump in the pool for some wet and weightless watching as we present water-themed shorts, and have the endurance to see an entire day of shorts on Saturday at Spegeln, as Nordic shorts unspool from breakfast until bedtime!

Finally, this is the perfect year to focus on Norway, whose shorts and docs are on fire!

Risk-taking, original and timely, Norwegian filmmakers are telling stories that the world needs now!

The OL3 plant in Eurajoki is considered a role model for the second coming of the nuclear industry on a global basis. But the project has faced serious problems during construction and is now running almost 10 years late. The film portrays life in a small ”nuclear town” during an era of nuclear renaissance.

The programme is curated by Nordisk Panorama in collaboration with BUFF and in partnership with the City of Malmö, offering free screenings for schools. A presentation of eight high-end feature films, made by filmmakers from three continents, just before their release. DOK. Incubator is a well-established rough-cut workshop, which every year helps to develop films to reach the top international festivals (Sundance, IDFA, Hot Docs, Karlovy Vary and Locarno in 2015/2016). This is the first public presentation of the films developed at the 2016 DOK.Incubator workshop.

The film market runs during market opening hours and showcases the very latest Nordic short and documentary films on demand.

Efficiency is guaranteed through the digital screening system that allows market guests to create individual selections, contact distributors directly, take notes and keep track of work already done.

The market one-to-ones are short meetings of 10-15 minutes giving market professionals and Nordic filmmakers a chance to meet exclusively. Meetings are pre-arranged by the market staff beforehand, but can be booked at the NP Market Desk during opening hours in the event of availability. The meetings take place at the market and can be requested by filmmakers with a film in the market.

Nordisk Panorama Forum is the annual meeting place and funding event for Nordic documentary professionals looking to connect with a variety of Nordic and international decision-makers from TV, film institutes and regional film funds. Featuring pitching sessions, pre-booked individual meetings and social events, Nordisk Panorama Forum offers all participants a professional platform to network and do business in addition to an intensive educational experience for observers and film school students. More than 280 professionals will attend the event, and we are looking forward to three intensive days of networking, pitching and discussing the selected projects.

SELECTED PROJECTS Over two days, NP Forum presents a selection of 24 brand new documentary projects that are pitched in an open forum to around 70 attending decision-makers. In addition, more than 20 selected observer+ projects are presented in individual meetings between producers and decision-makers.

EASTERN EUROPEAN DELEGATION Every year NP Forum welcomes a specially invited foreign delegation. This year we are happy to welcome the Eastern European delegation, which is here to connect with the Nordic documentary community.

The delegation is arranged in cooperation with the Institute of Documentary Film.

PRODUCERS MEET PRODUCERS The delegation will take part in the networking event Producers Meet Producers, kicking off the forum on Sunday 18 September with in-depth networking, co-production insight and roundtable discussions. This is the perfect place to find suitable co-production partners and form the bonds necessary to access funds across borders. The event welcomes a selection of Nordic producers.

Nordisk Panorama Film Festival wants you to explore the uniqueness of each of the countries within the Nordic family. So every year we put our ears to the ground of one of the Nordic countries to explore what is happening in this particular country in this particular year. This year’s festival offers a special focus on Norway and brings Norwegian films and filmmakers some extra limelight.

We are opening the festival with Norwegian film Magnus (see p. 12), we host our annual session “Our Dinner With” (see p. 50 ) with the renowned Norwegian film director Aslaug Holm inviting you and the writer Åsa Linderborg for dinner. We dive into the heart of terrorism in the Masterclass by Paul S. Refsdal (see p. 52 ), director of the competition documentary Dugma – The Button (see p. 11 ),

which offers unbelievable access to the inner thoughts of the suicide bombers of Al-Qaida.

And this was just a brief summary.

OUR DINNER WITH – Aslaug Holm and Åsa Linderborg Boat dinner with storytellers ”Our Dinner With…” is a mainstay at Nordisk Panorama, every year presenting exiting encounters between Nordic and international storytellers. Come join us for a fantastic Sunday dinner on the floating restaurant Blå Båten while listening to a conversation between two Nordic storytellers, Aslaug Holm and Åsa Linderborg.

The dinner concept will be organized by the event company Till Bords, providing unexpected, tasteful and fun dinner settings.

For this special event, Till Bords will pair up with one of Malmö’s best local chefs and offer an all vegetarian delicious meal.

This year’s host, Aslaug Holm, is an award winning Norwegian director, writer, editor and cinematographer. Her latest film Brothers has been travelling all over the world and recently won the prestigous main price at HotDocs Film Festival. Holm’s dinner partner is Åsa Linderborg, Swedish writer and head of culture at newspaper Aftonbladet. Her novel ”Mig Äger Ingen”, was critically acclaimed and nominated for the August Prize.

KON-TIKI KON-TIKI In 1947, the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl gathered a crew of six men (and one parrot) and set out on a fearless voyage across the Pacific Ocean. On board the hand-built raft was also a 16 mm camera. After 101 days at sea, Heyerdahl and his men reached the shores of Polynesia, and in 1951 the dramatic footage they later sculpted into a film was awarded an Oscar for Best Documentary.

SHOWING THE OTHER SIDE Masterclass with Paul S. Refsdal

Refsdal is a journalist turned into a documentary filmmaker. After leaving the Norwegian army in 1984, he went to Afghanistan to report on the Mujahedin fighting Soviet occupation. In the following decades Refsdal reported on more than a dozen insurgent groups including the KLA in Kosovo, the Tamil Tigers, the Shining Path of Peru, the Chechen rebels, the Afghan Taliban and the Syrian branch of Al-Qaida.

Paul S. Refsdal will talk about the intended message of his films and the concept of showing the human side of our designated enemies. He will describe the numerous hurdles and dilemmas which had to be overcome in making his second documentary, “Dugma – the Button”, including dealing with broadcasters anxious about airing the film.

This programme zooms into a selection of current art film and video productions.

The selected works are rooted in an experienced reality, its politics and affections, but suggest and map out trajectories. In a world of big data and extinction the ‘imaginary documentary’ is an inside/outside process and, as in the Norwegian author Tarjei Vesaas’s novel ‘Is-slottet’ (The Ice Palace), suggests the body as a space.

The rapid advances in digital technologies continuously challenge and shape the conditions of visual storytelling. Along with the gradual shift from analogue to digital, and the seemingly endless possibilities that come with the development of CGI, VFX, 3D and VR, new ways of telling stories and of engaging audiences continue to emerge.

In our Digital Disruption section, we explore the changes and challenges that arise with the development of digital technologies. We take a closer look at how these new platforms can be used to create unique and novel audience experiences and how we will finance screen content in the future.

ERIK GANDINI In this masterclass, Uri and Erik will discuss their creative process and demonstrate the strengths and challenges of creating an animated documentary, exemplified by “Cosmopolitanism”. Coming from very different schools of filmmaking, they will show how they managed to weave together a project based on those two approaches.

The masterclass will include the screening of “Cosmopolitanism” and will be followed by a networking session where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss projects with the filmmakers, the moderator and the ANIDOX team.

The Animation Workshop’s ANIDOX programme lead by Michelle and Uri Kranot is a unique opportunity to produce, develop projects and share knowledge about animated documentaries.

Documentary filmmakers are often drawn to faraway places, stories and subjects foreign to their everyday lives. What are the impulses and influences that lead them far from home and the challenges of making films abroad? How do they avoid the tourist trap of looking outside in, and for a limited time only? This isn’t just a question of access and personal investment, but also one of morality; how does a filmmaker go from being an outsider to an insider, from passive listener to active participant, and determine right from wrong in an environment outside of their time zone and comfort zone?

The oft-cited line “dying is easy, comedy is hard” gets an update in this discussion of darkness and genre filmmaking. Comedy is hard, but scary is even harder! Are scares more difficult to deliver than laughs? Is inciting fear and tension more elusive than creating something funny? Why do horror and macabre genres “get no respect”? Disturbing, morbid and unsettling feelings are sensations that audiences may try to avoid, but aren’t they just as important and inspiring as happy endings and feelgood takeaway? Spooky filmmakers tell their side of the story.

What is it like to direct your Dad, to produce your parents, to make a movie about your Mom? Filmmakers who share their family’s intimate moments and memories with the masses face specific problems and pleasures in working with their nearest and dearest. What are the pros and cons, advantages and obstacles of working with family?
