Tonight, we honor the long-standing commitment and contributions of Mari-Ann Kind Jackson. Involved since the earliest days of the Museum’s inception in a Ballard schoolhouse, Mari-Ann has played an instrumental role in the evolution of the Museum into the vibrant, nationally recognized “Notably Nordic” icon it is today. Among her achievements, she was a founding member of the Nordic American Voices Oral History project that has now documented the experiences and stories of over 1000 Nordic immigrants and Nordic Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Thank you, Mari-Ann, for your leadership and dedication and for sharing your love of bridging the past with the present.
We are also opening a new chapter in the Museum’s history under the leadership of CEO Lāth Carlson. In addition to honoring and preserving our rich Nordic heritage, Lāth’s vision includes an expanding role for the Museum in fostering the exchange of ideas and innovations between Nordic countries and the United States to help address some of the societal challenges we face today.
The Auction Committee has worked diligently to procure an outstanding line-up of items and top entertainment for tonight’s gala event. We hope you will raise your paddle more than once. Remember to support Fund-A-Need to ensure that we continue to bring leading exhibits, artists, and programs to our community–a hallmark of the Museum.
Many thanks to the Auction Committee, Museum staff and to our sponsors. And thank you to our members and guests for your enthusiastic and continuing support. We couldn’t do it without you!
Let the celebration begin! Skål!!

No auction is possible without a talented auctioneer and gifted emcee, and tonight we have both for you! We are delighted to introduce you to your evening’s Auctioneer, Mark Shone, and our Emcee, Tatevik Aprikayan.
Mark Shone is a Seattle-based fundraising auctioneer and emcee and has been with Northup Fundraising since 2012. He is a respected educational innovator, teacher, instructor, and coach who has been involved in education for over 30 years, affiliating with many independent schools in the Seattle area. He has taught classes since 2005 as an improvisational comedy actor with Unexpected Productions. When not auctioneering, teaching, or acting, Mark enjoys regular travel to Scotland and Iceland, attending rugby matches, or working on his summer home on Whidbey Island.
Tatevik Aprikyan is a multi-lingual, award-winning broadcast journalist with a career spanning across the United States. Since launching her career in 2005 in Seattle, Tatevik has been anchoring, reporting and hosting across the United States for CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC, NPR stations and various other national and local media outlets. A globallyminded broadcaster, she is passionate and dedicated to serving communities where she lives.
Special recognition for our wonderful Auction volunteers! We are honored and privileged to have such a committed and hardworking group. We could not put on such a memorable evening without your support.
Special thanks to
Tonight’s theme is Notably Nordic, but it is all of you who are truly notable. It is only with your support that the National Nordic Museum can continue to thrive and have a positive impact on all the communities we serve.
The Nordic countries are well known for producing more world-class athletes, musicians, artists, authors, explorers, and academics than anyone would expect based on their size. It’s so much fun to see all the tables filled around this room in celebration of those prominent Nordic figures, and we will cap the night off dancing to the iconic tunes of ABBA. Just as the five Nordic countries punch above their weight, so too does the National Nordic Museum with its worldclass exhibitions, programs, and events. The same force that produced Notable Nordics is what has made a Notable Nordic Museum: Community. You.
More than 90% of this museum’s funding comes from you—our community. Despite being Washington state’s only national museum, we receive no federal funding. Your support enables us to represent our history, our current era, and our imaginable futures through cultural events and exhibitions. You make it possible for us to host events like the Nordic Innovation Summit (NIS), where contemporary ideas and innovations are shared between countries, and our yearly community gathering, Julefest. Your support makes us a stop for diplomats, political and economic leaders, and royalty—most recently, His Royal Highness Prince Carl Philip of Sweden this past March.
As we raise our glasses to the future of the National Nordic Museum, we acknowledge and celebrate this community’s support and involvement to ensure our success. Thank you.

Mari-Ann Stoltz Kind Jackson has been a devoted part of the National Nordic Museum’s story for over 37 years, beginning with her first visit to the Nordic Heritage Museum in the 1980s. Encouraged by then-director Marianne Forssblad, she began her journey in 1988 as a docent and quickly became known for her warmth, humor, and infectious enthusiasm. In addition to leading countless tours, Mari-Ann now mentors new docents, passing on her deep knowledge and passion for Nordic culture. Over the years, she has also served as a trustee, board member, Auction co-chair, and international tour guide. Since 2009, she has been an active participant in the Nordic American Voices oral history project, which has conducted over 1,000 interviews preserving the stories of Nordic Americans across the country—including her own.
Mari-Ann grew up north of the Arctic Circle in Borkenes, Kvæfjord, Norway, coming of age during the Nazi occupation. The experience left a lasting impression, instilling in her a resilience and curiosity that would eventually lead her from Norway to the Pacific Northwest.
A lifelong learner and educator, Mari-Ann began her teaching career at age 19 in a one-room schoolhouse in Norway. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Pacific Lutheran University (formerly College) and later pursued advanced studies at the University of Washington and Central Washington University. After raising a family and building a successful career in marketing and sales, she returned to her roots in cultural education through her transformative work with the Museum.
Mari-Ann’s commitment to the Museum extends to her family, who have become part of the community she helped nurture. Her sons, Erik and Leif, are both major contributors to the Museum, and her grandchildren have proudly carried its banner in Ballard’s 17th of May parade for many years.

A beloved figure in the Museum’s history, Mari-Ann Jackson embodies the values and mission of the National Nordic Museum. In recognition of her exceptional service, the Museum and the Northern Lights Auction Committee are honored to present her with the Allan Osberg Award for Distinguished Service.
In recognition of his many years of wise counsel and generous support, the National Nordic Museum is pleased to name our annual honoree spotlight award the Allan Osberg Award for Distinguished Service. We will be forever grateful to Allan for his dedication to our mission and to Seattle’s Nordic community. Visually, the award itself fuses themes of wood and water, both of which are important to Allan’s own history and heritage as well as our shared Nordic and Pacific Northwest industries, cultures, and landscapes. Symbolically, the award is testament to Allan’s stewardship of our mission, of living our values, and sharing the Museum’s vision with people of all ages and backgrounds.

World-renowned glass artist and longtime Ballard resident Ginny Ruffner (1952 – 2025) died in January 2025. She left behind an impressive body of work and innumerable project ideas. Many people know of Ginny’s profound contributions to glass art, but the scope of her artistic production was vast. Over the last decade, Ginny embraced the potential of virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial reality to explore the natural world. With the National Nordic Museum’s Project Aurora (2022), she used artificial intelligence to conjure the unpredictability of a most elusive phenomenon. Ginny found collaborators in leading scientific researchers and computer programmers, forming fruitful partnerships to realize her unfettered creative vision and push the boundaries of art.
The National Nordic Museum opened the artist’s last major exhibition Ginny Ruffner: Project Aurora in February 2024, and we acquired the twenty-foot shimming wall of light for the permanent collection three months later. Project Aurora is the perfect fit for the Museum. It exemplifies two of the Museum’s core values: innovation and connection to nature. The aurora borealis is an exciting, ever-changing spectacle caused by solar wind on the Earth’s magnetosphere, visible in the Nordic region. Permanently installed in the Museum’s entryway, Project Aurora transports our visitors to a Nordic skyscape from the moment they walk through the doors.
Ruffner was a searing intellect and indefatigable force. She had more than ninety solo exhibitions, and sixty
museums acquired her work. In 2019, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum organized the major traveling exhibition Ginny Ruffner: Reforestation of the Imagination, which harnessed the power of augmented reality to portray a “futuristic landscape of peril and promise.” Ruffner pursued projects that allowed her to use innovative technology as artistic media even at the time of her death. She was creating an Augmented Reality Walking Tour at the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) facility in Hanford, Washington. Only two months prior, she proudly delivered the 25th annual Page Hazelgrove Lecture in Glass Art at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a highlight of her distinguished professional career.
