The UiTM Campus in Puncak Alam has been endowed with numerous buildings to suit administrative, faculty and student needs. However there are large areas of the campus that have not been developed. The main design task is to provide a facility for the students so that they can engage in other activities besides academic.

In Advance Architectural Construction II, we have been exposed to several structural systems that cater for long spans, cloumn-free spaces, and complex forms. Some of them belong to the category of shell structures comprising developable shells, synclastic shells, anticlastic shells and freeform shells.

This design proposal aspire to incorporate the lessons learned in the innovative structures, long span and complex form theories of the surface and rigid genre in a building design.

The shell shall be designed as a facility for use by the students to enable them to participate in activities that contribute positively towards character development, academic excellence, and nation building.

Shells can be constructed from reinforced concrete, timber (solid and engineered) or steel. Modern day shells take the structure of a continuous shell, which works in any direction and pair it with the constructibility of the beamand-stick approach.

Al-Ikhsan Sports was established in 1993 with a single 150 sq.ft. store in Holiday Plaza, Johor Bhru. From sole propriertorship enterprise, the company has evolved to Private Limited Company named as Al-Ikhsan Sports Sdn Bhd. Since inception, the business has grown up to 134 doors all over Peninsular Malaysia. In 2011, the company has been awarded with ASEAN Business Outstanding Award 2011- Industry Class Sector Sports Retail by ASEAN Retail & Franchise Federation. The Sports Intelligence Report ranked Al-Ikhsan as the 77th largest sporting goods retailer in the world.

Tutorial 1 Project incpeption: these documented sketches are culmination of site apprehension on key criteria which includes access to the site, existing vehicular and pedestrian networks, plinth area, site forces, vistas, topography, building frontage, etc.

Tutorial 2 Delves into an architecture of ideas, dreams and forms guided by fundamental principles and technique such as structural grid, column-tocolumn span, building materials and connection between materials, etc.

Working on 3-by-3 meter grid layout that can be extended further into 9-by-9 and 15-by-15 meter based to the planning system intended. Also taking into account the cloumn-free space needed for the futsal and badminton courts as well as complying with the minimum height clearance rexpectively.

Completed in 1998 as Hong Kong’s sole air terminal, by 2040 it is expected to handle 80 million passengers per annum - equivalent of London’s Heathrow and New York’s JFK airports combined.

Among the most ambitious construction projects of modern times, the land on which the airport stands was once a mountainous island. In a major reclamation programme, its 100-metre peak was reduced to 7 metres above sea level and the island was expanded to four times its original area.

The terminal building extends a concept pioneered at Stansted Airport - a model since adopted by airport planners worldwide. It is characterised by a lightweight roof canopy, kept free of service installations; the use of natural lighting; and the integration beneath the main passenger concourse of all the technical equipment for baggage handling, environmental services and transportation.

56 petals — 28 large and 28 small — entwine to create the steel framework.

The stadium exterior is made up of a series of unique yet repetitive truss modules, or petals, that enclose the stadium bowl. As the seating parameters were changed, the petal system adapted.

If the sightline standards were modified, the exterior shape would immediately adjust to conform to the new bowl.

key design concepts

Positive Gaussian Curvature

Cloud-like form

The Gaussian curvature is positive and the surface is said to have an elliptic point. At such points, the surface will be dome like, locally lying on one side of its tangent plane.

Clouds are quite universal. Everyone can relate to them, and by putting them indoors you kind of change the context. It can become strange or even threatening. Nevertheless, caught an attention. A statement.

Unidirectional bending When the shell edges move freely, the cross-section can undergo transverse bending. Physically, the local Gaussian curvature must be conserved under the local inextensibility assumption, thus, a flattening of the cross-section is accompanied by the mid-surface of shell progressively tightening as long as it is initially curved.

Bend it like Beckham Curl or bend is spin on the ball which will make it change direction, called a ‘screw shot’ in the 19th century. When kicking the ball, the inside of the foot is often used to curl the ball, but this can also be done by using the outside of the foot.

Skylight Reduced energy consumption. The lessened dependency on artificial lighting can help reduce the use of electricity by as much as 10%.

Apart from energy consumption, bright lighting stimulates the mind (which is why it’s great for task illumination) while dim illumination quiets our senses and can make us feel drowsy.
