All kinds of preparations are being made: the maps have been drawn, the schedules are being made and the fun is getting started. You can feel it in everything: Noorderzon 2024 is almost here! Soon the Noorderplantsoen will once again be transformed into a festival village and the theatres in the city will host our Downtown programme.
We are extremely happy that you are coming to help us and come ‘Noorderzonnen’ with us. The festival is an incredibly nice place to meet people, enjoy Groningen and the world beyond together. Eleven days of fun, scanning tickets, tinker on the playing field, getting moved by the plays, tapping beers and dancing under the stars.
This crew guide contains everything you need in the run-up to and during Noorderzon 2024. So read it carefully before you start working. If you have any questions or if something is unclear, please let us know! You can find all contact details in this crew guide.

Noorderzon2024
"Noorderzon Festival of Performing Arts & Society is the somewhat curious combination of grand summer festival and international arts festival. Local programme stands side-by-side with adventurous international performing arts and social interpretation. Cutting-edge theatre and music, literature, modern dance, local performances in intimate settings, after-talks and lectures. The city as a stage, the freely accessible and idyllic Noorderplantsoen as a meeting place, village and stage in one."
Noorderzon takes place in the Noorderplantsoen and at various locations in ‘Downtown’
Groningen: Forum, Grand Theatre, Machinefabriek, Vera, Lutherse Kerk, VRIJDAG and USVA. The festival site in the Noorderplantsoen is freely accessible, as are the concerts at Apollo, Callisto and De Raaf. You do need a ticket for most performances at the Noorderplantsoen and Downtown Groningen.
TheNoorderplantsoen
This year, the Noorderplantsoen looks both familiar and renewed: we have made several changes and improvements. In the northern part of the festival grounds, you will find the mirror tent Pollux, the &society-location Nova, the open-air music stage Apollo, the terraces Paradijsvogel and De Raaf (note: these have been switched), and the stage De Raaf. In the southern part, you will find an area specifically for children with De Kleine Beer, Grote Beer, and Draak, as well as the music stage Callisto and the (even bigger) mirror-tent Castor. In four places in the park, you will find groups of containers, which you can also find on the map on page 4.

Supervisor
While working at Noorderzon, you will always have a supervisor. You can contact this person (e.g. a bar manager at the bar) for questions about your work and how to register for your shift. Only on your first shift do you have to pass the crew and information desk first.

Workclothes
Foreveryonewhocomestowork,wehaveacrew t-shirt,sothatyouarerecognizableasa volunteer.Makesureyouwearthisduringyour shift.
DuringNoorderzonitcanbeveryhot,butitcan alsorainheavily.Therefore,putonsensible clothesandshoesformultipleweathertypes. Andwearclosedshoes(noflip-flops).
Keepinmindthatyouhaveapublicfunction.We thereforeaskyoutowearappropriateandnonprovocativeclothingwhileworkingat Noorderzon.
Valuables
Leaveyourlaptop,iPadandoverstuffedwalletat home.Wehavenolockersorspaceatyour workplaceforstoringvaluablesanditwouldbe unfortunateifyoulosethem.Noorderzonisnot liablefortheft.

Goldenrules
Everyone is welcome at Noorderzon. Noorderzon offers a window on the world - stories from all corners of the world are being collected and told. Groningen is a beautiful, diverse city where everyone can participate every day. Be considerate of each other. It is sometimes busy, it is sometimes exciting, and we are not all the same. This requires patience, love and respect for each other.
Be mindful of the park. We are guests and want to leave the park as tidy as possible again. Treat each other with respect. We also ask this of our audience and artists, regardless of your background.
Speak to each other about inappropriate behavior, or report it to your person in charge, the crew desk, confidants. There are lots of people there to help, to get your mind off things, or to talk away.
Make sure you eat, drink and rest sufficiently. This ensures that you can fully enjoy your work at Noorderzon.
It is forbidden to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during your shift.
Report any nuisance to security or staff, recognizable by their work clothes. In case of problems, do not take action on your own. Noorderzon provides supervision, both with recognizable and non-recognizable supervisors.
Always follow instructions and directions from Noorderzon crew, traffic supervisors and security.
On the grounds, you may be filmed or photographed. The organization may use these recordings for promotional purposes.
Entering the festival grounds in the Noorderplantsoen is at your own risk.
VVV
To make you as a (new) volunteer feel at home at our festival, we introduce the VVV. This VrijwilligersVragen-Vriend (volunteers-questions-friend) is an experienced volunteer who will take you and the rest of your VVV group in tow. They will show you around, answer questions and be a friend at the festival. They also provide a fun entry to Noorderzon by chilling in the grass together, having a drink or going to a performance.

Chattingwiththeorganisation
During the festival, you can chat with the organisation of the festival. Do you need to have a chat, are you unsure about something or do you want to let your heart out? At the backstage desk, people are there to listen and help.
Protocolforinappropriatebehaviour
Within Noorderzon we have a protocol for inappropriate behaviour. This protocol contains clear information on how to act in cases of inappropriate behaviour at our festival. The protocol also contains the names of Noorderzon's own confidential counsellors.
Confidentialcounsellor
We think it is important that you always have somewhere to put your story when inappropriate behaviour occurs, and we realise that there are also situations where you would like to discuss something in confidence. If you have experienced inappropriate behaviour and would like to talk about it, you can contact a confidant.
Confidential counsellors have a duty of confidentiality; anything you discuss with the confidential counsellor is confidential and will not be shared until you have given your permission. If there is or has been inappropriate behaviour, the confidant can hear, assist, guide and advise you.
