WHS Graduating Class of 2011 Twenty-nine students walked across the stage at the 2:30 p.m. May 15 Woodbine High School commencement ceremonies. Speakers included: 2011 valedictorian Nadiah Wahba with a speech on fearing change; 2011 salutatorian Jacolby Ehlert with a speech on hunting for success; and 2011 class president Taylor Blum with a speech on the senior quote and being fearless as the move on. Graduating seniors and their respective awards and scholarships included: Zack Archer: Tommy Gate Scholarship, Bus Brown Foundation, Dr. R.C. Johnson Award. New ATM in town Summer Library Welcome Center NIKKI DAVIS Editor The construction began on May 16. With it will come big changes on how Bank of the West customers are able to bank. The Bank of the West drive through window, currently located in conjunction with the Woodbine Post Office on the corner of Fifth Street and Lincoln Way, is being replaced. A NOOK Color e-reader. An eight gigabit Coby touchscreen video, MP3 player. A Casio EX-ZS5 14.1 megapixel digital camera. A pizza and pool party. Surprise awards. These are items being offered to participants of the Woodbine Youth Library’s Summer Reading Program. Signups for the program are currently underway simply by stopping by the library, though the program itself begins on June 1. The 2011 themes include “One World, Many Stories” for prekindergarten through sixth graders and “You Are Here” for junior high and high school. Participant age level is determined by what grade students will be in for the upcoming, 2011-12 school year. In order to participate, students are required simply to read. Upon signing up for the program, students are given reading logs in which to track their reading. The See LIBRARY Page 6

The Harrison County Welcome Center’s Farmer’s Market began with a simple note scrawled on a piece of paper in 2009, “Harrison County does not have a Farmer’s Market.” That single note has led to what might become an annual, summer event, ready to begin May 19 this year. It was the Welcome Center’s Manager Kathy Dirks who scrawled that note during the Iowa State Tourism Conference back in 2009. The note was written during an afternoon program discussing other communities’ success with a farmer’s market – local people purchasing local produce and wares. She first broached the subject with Tim Sproul, former Harrison County Conservation Director. His response to the idea was simple, but moved it forward. “Explore it,” he said. Dirks did as she began to make phone calls to people like Bahia Barry, the Southwest Iowa Food Coordinator who works with organizing local markets like the one Dirks had in mind. “I just asked her about the farmer’s markets and See MARKET Page 6
