Angela Bush is only one in every 10,000 children born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a congenital heart disease. After multiple surgeries at six months, 18 months, at 3 years, 10 years and 11 years in July of 2010, and repeated trips to Lincoln and Omaha for physical, occupational and speech therapy, her outlook for recovery has been set at 97 percent. However, the bills continue to pile up, even with the help of insurance, since the last surgery in 2010. A large portion of those bills are medical,

but the family remains optimistic. “She’s getting better,” Angela’s mother, Misty Bush, said. “She’s down to physical therapy three days a week in Omaha now, which is much closer than Lincoln where we were having to go. She goes to speech, physical and occupational therapy.” In October of 2010, Angela couldn’t even hold a pencil. But now, her mom says, her left hand is slowly recovering. “It’s a slow process,” Misty said. “But she has a hand splint to straighten her fingers out and she can support a little weight with it.”

Angela has also been taken off her feeding tubes and been given permission to eat solid foods. She’s been eating through a tube throughout the days since around March of 1999. She was only afforded solid foods in the evenings. “And she likes to eat,” Misty said, smiling. “But she’ll still take lettuce over cookies and cake.” And, thanks to Misty who quit her job and chooses to remain unemployed in order to run Angela to doctor’s appointments and more, Misty has been taking Angela to school periodically. Misty was thrilled to announce Angela will

MIKE BROWNLEE OWH News Service

NIKKI DAVIS Editor Five Woodbine churches are getting ready to take soon to be 4 year oldpreschoolers through sixth grade students on a safari – through the “Kingdom of the Son: A Prayer Safari.” Community Vacation Bible School has been set for 9 a.m. to noon, Mon., June 6 through Fri., June 10. The United Methodist Church is the primary organizer this year, receiving help from the Christian Church, Community of Christ, Sacred Heart and the Believer’s Training Center. VBS is hosting an early registration for 6-7 p.m., Sun., June 5 at the Community of Christ Church where students will be able to pick up their free Tshirt. The early registration allows for

the fun to begin sooner the following Monday, alleviating the time restraints for registration that morning and allowing the attendees to begin their lessons. Knowledgeable and fun lessons that VBS Director Barbie Schafer hopes have an impact. “I think the sooner we teach children about God and Christ, the more apt they are to want to learn more,” Schafer said. “They’ll be more apt to apply it to their lives. And if we can do it in a fun way, they’re going to latch See VBS Page 6

A former Woodbine banker faces 18 months in prison for committing multi-million dollar bank fraud. On May 20, John Jarvey, U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Iowa, sentenced Kenneth Waite for using a false loan application to obtain a $2.3 million lineof-credit for distressed customers, according to a release from the Office of the U.S. Attorney. “Those who place their funds on deposit with federally-insured financial institutions expect bank officers to safeguard their money, not steal it or gamble with it,” U.S. Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt said in the release. “Mr. Waite’s sentence should serve as a warning that the federal criminal justice system will not tolerate bank officials who violate the trust of customers and the bank system.” Waite faced a 50-count indictment that involved a series of bank transactions from October 2004 through November 2005 while at Commercial Federal Bank in Woodbine. During his trial in February, Waite struck a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count, which charged him with knowingly making false statements to the executive loan committee of his bank by See WAITE Page 6
