KEVIN BROWN General Manager Mindy Crook, representing property owners on Walker Street, and Debra Sprecker, director of the Woodbine Main Street-Chamber of Commerce, presented an overview of a Challenge Grant proposal to the Woodbine City Council at its regular meeting Nov. 21. Sprecker told the council the Challenge Grant has been submitted to the state and is for rear façade work on buildings at 505, 509 and 511 Walker Street (the Odd Fellows building,
the former Twiner building, now Artisan, and The Bakery building). The Artisan building is the focal point of the grant project. The work shows building improvements, outdoor artwork and live plant landscaping, along with additional green space near Farmer’s Trust and Savings Bank. The council received the presentation as informational and agreed to sign a resolution in support of the project. In other action, the council: • Received a report and a letter of thanks See COUNCIL Page 6

GWTA’s Family of the Year NIKKI DAVIS Editor
Andi Thomsen and Jackie Thomsen, of Thomsen Chiropractic, went all out for the “Bright Lights, Little City” lighted parade in 2010. NIKKI DAVIS Editor If you’ve made a list, Santa will be available to check it twice during the “Bright Lights, Little City” Christmas in Woodbine celebration on Friday, Dec. 2. Santa, along with his wife, Mrs. Claus, will be waiting for anxious list bringers from 4:30-8 p.m. at Morrison’s Timekeepers building, with decorating help from official elves on the Main Street Promotions Committee. However, Santa and his helpers will be taking a
break to lead the annual “Lighted Parade,” which will head south down Main (Walker) Street at 6 p.m. Float participants are asked to line up beginning at 5:15 p.m. at the corner of Walker and Sixth Streets with judging to follow at 5:50 p.m. Lighted Parade float winners are vying for two $50 Woodbine Dollar awards. But the family fun doesn’t end there. Bright Lights, Little City 2011 will be packed full of action for the whole family. The Ministerial Association’s Cookie Walk will be from 4:30 p.m. until there’s no cookies left See CHRISTMAS Page 6
The letter to the Nebraska Gold Wing Touring Association from Chapter Z nominating Tom and Judy Erlewine for the GWTA Family of the Year pretty much says it all. Not only is the couple active within Chapter Z, they are active in their community: Woodbine. The letter tells the story of their personal life. Tom drives a truck for Hill Bros and Judy has owned her own cleaning business for 25 years and driven a school bus for the Woodbine Community School District for the last five. The couple have four children and seven grandchildren, plus a 12-year-old niece who has resided with them since her mother passed away when she See GWTA Page 6

finally coming to fruition. “Ten years ago, we were talking about and exploring our opportunities and options to outreach to kids,” Community of Christ Church Pastor Noel Sherer said. “And I remember my sister, Julie Newton, proposing an activity center or gym type of building. We also considered other options, but decided this would be a way to build on the programs we
already have and the potential to expand to some areas we’d like to have in the future.” The need was apparent to Sherer, who mentioned a typical gathering of the junior and senior high youth group can tally up to 50 students. In addition to the youth group, the Community Bible School is often hosted by Community of Christ. “This will be an asset for both of those,” See ADDITION Page 6
