Maj. Gen. Tim Orr, Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, left, presented Spc. Andrew Cohrs, Woodbine, with the Purple Heart medal he earned while part of the 2nd Brigarde Combat Team, 34th ID trip to Afghanistan. Photo: Submitted NIKKI DAVIS Editor Spc. Andrew Cohrs, 24, Woodbine, was awarded the Purple Heart Jan. 7, at Camp Dodge, Johnston. Cohrs, assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry, Iowa Army National Guard, received the honor after he suffered a concussion from a multiple rocket-propelled grenade attack while attempting village assessments and a humanitarian aid drop in the village of Hasan Lgadah, Paktiya province, Afghanistan. Cohrs was in the second vehicle of a five vehicle convoy that was ambushed at approximately 6:15 p.m., April 25, 2011, after completing
the humanitarian drop in Hasan Lgadah. Following the drop, the convoy was blocked from continuing by a rock slide blocking the roadway and were forced to take an alternative route. While traveling, the convoy was ambushed from approximately 400 meters west by around six to eight insurgents who were armed with AK47 assault rifles, PK machine guns and RPG grenade launchers. Cohrs remembers hearing a gunner call out to men on the ridge line along the road where the convoy was attacked, before hearing small arms and RPGs being fired. The second vehicle in the convoy, which carried Cohrs and four other Guard members, was targeted by three RPGs, as well as machine gun and small arms fire.
