WEA and Chamber offering tasty fundraiser March 13 NIKKI DAVIS Editor It’s a tasty way for the Woodbine Community School District to raise funds for scholarships, provide pool passes for community members and more. The Woodbine Education Association and Woodbine Main Street-Chamber are teaming up for the second Staley’s Chicken Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 13 in the Woodbine Community
School commons area. Last year, the dinner served about 375 dinners. The goal this year is set at serving 500. “The Staley’s Chicken Dinner is visible proof of the importance of community and school working together,” Main Street-Chamber President Lynn Clark said. “We are fortunate to live in a community where we recognize the value of working together. Everyone benefits from this event – great chicken
dinner, time to visit with your neighbors while helping raise funds for the school.” The WEA developed the idea last year after responding to help with Sunday Dinners Downtown, where the WEA and Main StreetChamber split the tasks using volunteers from both organizations. The event was so well received, plans were soon in the works to repeat the event. “Preparations for the
dinner usually start a few months ahead of time,” WEA Co-President Stephanie Strong admitted. “This year we decided to share the fundraiser with the Main StreetChamber to promote both organizations and to show the community that the school and local businesses are a team in promoting this town and this school.” Each meal served by the WEA and Main StreetChamber volunteers will See STALEY’S Page 6
Olweus Bully Prevention Program Family Night proves a success

Just a roll of masking tape and newspapers ... those were construction materials for each group participating in Olweus’ Bully Prevention Family Night March 2. Pictured here are Cameryn Schafer, Cody Moores, Marissa Oestmann, Austin Moores, Barbie Schafer and Jenny Moores. The goal of the team building project was for each team to build a self-standing structure made only of newspaper and masking tape that could cover the whole team. “That was a lot of fun,” elementary student Conrad Schafer said. The team building activity followed the Olweus Bully Prevention informational presentation. The event drew 280 parents, community members and students. The evening was funded by a Harrison, Manona, Shelby County Decatagorization Community Partnership for Proctecting Children grant. Free T-shirts were distributed through a drawing for students sporting the evening’s theme: “Reach into the darnkess; pull another into the light.” Photo: Bracinda Blum

Seeking veteran’s photos Veterans, or friends and family, are being encouraged to provide pictures of themselves or soldiers in uniform while on active duty to Cindy at the Woodbine Elementary School. The photos will be used for a presentation during next year’s Veteran’s Day program. All pictures will be returned. Please be sure a name and phone number are provided on the back of the photo.
The Harrison County Humane Society is bound and determined to continue their forward progress in 2011 – but are actively seeking help in more than one area. The group has actually been around since the early 2000s, but dissention and health related issues forced the group to fall apart in 2003. In 2005, they reorganized with original members and new members and haven’t looked back. The group has begun fundraising activities throughout the county, such as their Rescue Ride poker run in the summer, followed up by an auction and live music. Then there’s the annual Santa Paws in December, where animals and humans can have their picture taken with Santa Claus. See HCHS Page 6
