New Alegent Clinic to open doors April 4 Open House slated for April 8 NIKKI DAVIS Editor A short six months after construction began on Sept. 20, 2010, the Woodbine Alegent Health Clinic will open their brand new doors to the public beginning April 4. The way the
new building came to pass was almost uncanny, almost proving everything happens for a reason. “I was sitting beside Bob Valentine, Alegent’s administrator, at the Main Street-Chamber meeting two years ago and he had said the
existing clinic was too small and due to HIPPA requirements, there was concern due to the walls being too thin and conversations being overheard,” Woodbine Betterment’s Todd Heistand said. “Woodbine Betterment and Darin Smith took it
from there.” “We were in need of upgrading and remodeling in the old facility. They had no break room, no place to hang coats and we use the closets for records storage – it was a very compact office since it was originally built for a sin-
gle physician, not an actual clinic,” Alegent Health Administrator Bob Valentine said. “We were already looking at options when Todd Heistand from the Betterment approached me about some loans they were pursuing through USDA and they
were looking for a ‘spotlight’ project, for lack of a better word. That’s how it all got started. It was at the Main StreetChamber Dinner and Update.” So with cooperation from Alegent’s new neighbors, Farmers See ALEGENT Page 6

Of course things were “all business” at the third annual Woodbine Main Street-Chamber Annual Dinner and Update, “Maintaining Momentum in 2011,” held March 25 at Shadow Valley Golf Course. Pictured here, Jim Reisz, bottom right, calls off “heads or tails” as dinner goers took a 50/50 chance at winning $500 in Woodbine dollars. See page 12 for additional photos of the annual event. It was in May of 2007 that Sapp Brothers retail department employee Mark Christensen was desperately trying to sell the abandoned gas station sitting on U.S. Highway 30 beside the Dollar General. The gas station was only good for one thing – an eyesore right on the outer limits of Woodbine. According to Christiansen, the building that was built as a gas station was constructed by Randy Vandemark and his sister Viola Jackson-Haag and See FUEL Page 6

Safe Routes to School and the Iowa Bicycle Coalition want to keep students safe – and fit. That’s why they’re coming to Woodbine for a community and school workshop from 5:30-8:30 p.m. April 6 in the school library. “Today the youth are not getting enough physical exercise. The results are increased asthma, type 2 diabetes – and this will be the first generation to have a shorter life span than their parents,” Safe Routes to School, Iowa Bicycle Coalition Program Director Jayne McGuire said. “Walking and bicycling to and from school is one way to get the 60 minutes of exercise youth need each and every day.” McGuire will combine her passion with Iowa Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Mark Wyatt, to show communities how to use the “Five E’s:” education, encouragement, enforcement, engineering and evaluation to help youth and families get the exercise they need. In order to prepare for the event, student travel information was collected via polls teachers distributed to their kindergarten through eighth grade classes. Parent surveys were also attached to parent/teacher conference assignments and the data was sent to Safe Routes to School and the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. Then the date, April 6, time, 5:30-8:30 p.m. and See SAFETY Page 6
In January Mary Lou Smith, Dunlap, received a letter that broke her heart. The letter stated the late Father Paul Strittmatter’s beloved St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Reservation in Mission, S.D. was in jeopardy of not opening this upcoming fall due to lack of funds. Father Paul had spent 13 years on the Lakota (Sioux) reservation prior to serving Harrison County beginning 1998. Smith, baptized and attending St. Patrick’s Parish her entire life, couldn’t stand the thought of the demise of the people of whom Father Father Paul Strittmatter at the comPaul always spoke of in the highest See FATHER Page 6 munion of Angela Doyel.
