Here I am, sitting in my favorite chair at the table where Art and I had spent so much time talking. I somehow can recall so much of that day...the ride to the church...the funeral service... walking behind Art’s casket in the soft, misty rain to his final resting place in front of our family memorial. Wasn’t it fortunate that Art and I decided together, here at this very table, to select our lasting family tribute? Art had always wanted us to choose our monument together. What a loving, thoughtful man! – An excerpt from the diary of Mary Smith.

Want your school to win a share of $1,000,000? Start voting.

Let us help you choose your family monument.

Come Check Out the New Tall Corn Inn Motel & Pogo Bob’s Night Club! The Tall Corn Motel in Shenandoah, Iowa is an historical resource with a very significant history in the Southwestern Iowa region. Built in several stages from the early 1950's through the 1960's, the Tall Corn Motel was a new concept in the hospitality industry at that time, and it is widely rumored that this was the actual first motel in the state of Iowa! The original owners of the Tall Corn Motel were Ken and Lulu Gee. In a recent interview with their son, Doctor Kenneth Gee, who at the ripe old age of 97 recalled fondly when his parents built the original motel in 1950. Amazingly, they showed us a published biography written by Dr. Gee that included this paragraph: "On our return to Shenandoah, we commented that our town did not have a motel to accommodate the traveling public. Our two downtown hotels were out of date and poorly located for Highway traffic. Art found a piece of land on the curve leading out of Shenandoah on Highway 2. We built a 12 unit, modern facility here and Mother chose the name-Tallcorn Motel. It grew rapidly and we sold out when it reached 35 units. It eventually grew to ninety-eight units, nine apartments, with a pool, gym, meeting rooms, dining room and bar. My father had once again demonstrated his good sense for business opportunities."! In the late 1950's, the 35 unit property was sold to an employee, Gertrude Peters. Gertie, as she was fondly known, was the driving force behind the development. Her unwavering ambition and courage are legendary in the community. Gertie Peters will long be remembered fondly for her incredible courage and pioneering spirit, as well as her love and dedication to her community. During the boom years, the Sidney Rodeo was the premier tourist attraction in Southwestern Iowa, and the Tall Corn Motel was the center of activity during its hay days. Many top attractions were drawn to the rodeo to perform for the vast crowds in attendance, including such contemporary stars as Crystal Gayle, Pat Boone, Jerry Reed, Liberace, Dolly Parton, Jimmy Stewart, Dale Robertson, William Shatner, and many more. Others noted entertainers who performed at the rodeo arena and stayed at the Tall Corn included such well known silver screen (for our younger readers, these were "black and white" television programs) characters as Festis, Doc, and Marshall Dillon from Gunsmoke, Gabby Hayes (now there was a character!), Hoss, Little Joe and Ben Cartwright from Bonanza. Bob and Victoria Babin acquired the property in June of 2010. The old Tall Corn, since called the Country Inn Motel, had deteriorated over the years. When they arrived, they saw the plumbing leaks, 1950's era furniture outdated and badly worn, much of the electrical wiring overloaded and patched together with extension cords. Main line water leaks sprang up. The exterior showed its age, as the paint was in need of attention. Rotted wood and siding was showing in several places around the motel. To many residents in the surrounding community, it seemed only a matter of time before the wrecking ball would arrive to reduce the site to nothing but a memory. The Country Inn Sports Bar was a pathetic dive. It soon became apparent that the crowd it attracted was a rough one. Fights were all too common. Illegal drug transactions were known to be frequently occurring in the dark shadows of the complex's three large parking lots. The police were called in to deal with problems nearly every night, and many of the local residents gave up entirely on the property.. The Babins wanted to change all that as fast as possible. With the helpful assistance of the local police, the clientele of the bar was cleaned up and the drug dealers and their customers were driven off. Fights were totally eliminated as the new management took an aggressive posture against violent behavior. Then the renovations began. Over $500,000 has been invested in extensive renovations over the last 16 months. Refurbished rooms today include beautiful new solid cherry American made furniture, nearly all new carpeting, and beautifully resurfaced walls with soft modern style. Virtually every problem has been faced head on and professionally addressed. The rooms are beautiful, clean, and comfortable and they provide convenient access with room front walk in parking. Our rates are by far the lowest in the area, and we challenge anyone to find any cleaner, safer and more spacious accommodations anywhere within the area. Victoria had a brainstorm idea. She decided to "theme out" some of the rooms. Her experience as a professional decorator in St Louis had taken her inside hundreds of custom decorated homes and businesses, and she decided to utilize her experience to create uniquely themed rooms for the motel. Theme rooms are decorated with artwork and memorabilia from several star personalities or products. Victoria designed theme rooms to showcase and memorialize several 1950's, 60's and 70's icons including Elvis Presley, and previous guests the Everly Brothers, Crystal Gayle, Liz Taylor, Dolly Parton, Lucille Ball, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe. Other theme rooms showcase famous American products and companies including Harley Davidson, John Deere, and The Sidney Rodeo. We also have a Deer and Bird Hunting room. Our theme rooms are very popular now. Some of our theme rooms will be open for viewing on Friday, Sept 23, when we hold our Grand Reopening Ceremony. The new Tall Corn Inn is not the sadly deteriorated Country Inn Motel it once was! Several customers asked us as the renovations progressed to rename the motel with the Tall Corn name, but we refused to rename the motel until June of this year. We waited until we were convinced it had been sufficiently remodeled for us to have honest pride in the facility. We invite you to visit us for a free guided tour of our facility during Shenfest Weekend. On Friday evening you are invited to join us at Pogo Bobs Nightclub for some great live music. Cover charges will be waived that night, so please arrive early since we expect a good crowd. Please join us for a free guided tour between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm and meet some of our wonderful employees and friends who have made all this happen. There will be free hot dogs and pop for the first 300 visitors. The Tall Corn Inn complex is a great place to stay and Pogo Bob's Nightclub a great place to party safely with friends to classic 60's, 70's and 80's rock and roll music. The hotel can be reached at 712-246-1550. The nightclub can be reached at 712-246-2201. Footnotes: 1. From "Dear Ones Away" pg 156 by Dr. Kenneth Gee © 2002

Practice Safe Driving on Rural Roads

Lions and tigers and bears ... oh my! It's probably a safe bet that a driver navigating North America's rural roads will not experience lions and tigers, but bears, deer, livestock, and other animals certainly are a possibility. Individuals who live in rural areas become accustomed to the subtleties of driving rural roads. However, those who are visiting the countryside on vacations or road trips may be less tuned-in to keep an eye for any animals with whom they might be sharing the road. According to research, there are twice as many accidents on rural roads as there are in urban areas.

To be safe, keep these tips in mind: ■ Expect blind curves. In many cases, rural roads are built to be of minimal disturbance to the surrounding landscape. This could mean that roads bend and dip every which way. Pay attention to posted speed limits -they're very accurate for the road conditions. ■ Be on animal watch. In suburban and urban areas, the focus of driving leans toward watching for other drivers and pedestrians. However, in rural areas, focus should be placed on watching out for animals. Certain times of the day, such as dawn and dusk, tend to be prime times for animals to be on the move, whether finding a new place to bed down or scout for food. A deer can total a car if hit, and even low-flying birds can cause damage. When passing farms, be on the lookout for livestock crossing the road and farmers driving equipment, such as tractors. Around lakes, one may come across geese or ducks. ■ The road may not be paved. Some drivers take paved roads for granted. In rural areas, the roads may be made of gravel or dirt. This calls for slower driving speeds to maintain traction and safety. ■ Expect minimal lighting. Driving at night in rural areas can be nerve-wracking for the inexperienced. Street lights are rare and may only appear at particularly dangerous curves or intersections. It will likely be necessary to use high beams while driving to maintain proper visibility. Extra caution to avoid animals should be exercised at night. ■ Keep a map in the car. GPS systems have become the standard for most drivers -- many of which rely on them solely for navigation. However, in rural areas, mountains or trees may obscure the satellite signal that powers these systems. It's easy to become lost when the GPS fails. Having a paper map on hand can give drivers peace of mind. Also, that same impaired satellite service could affect mobile phone signals. This makes knowing where a driver is going even more important. ■ Be careful of soft and unmarked shoulders. Rural roads may be built on the side of mountains or ravines. Dirt on the side of the roads could be unstable. These roads also tend to be more narrow. Use caution when pulling to the shoulder or passing other cars.

Salute to Agriculture - Understanding Crop Rotation today the principles of farming are much more foreign to the average American. One such principle is crop rotation, a valuable agricultural practice that can even pay dividends for suburban homeowners who enjoy gardening. The benefits of crop rotation aren't only applicable to large farms, as they can help keep personal gardens healthy as well. What Is Crop Rotation? Crop rotation is a practice farmers employ to help their crops fight disease. By growing a variety of crops in a

sequential system throughout their field, farmers are hoping to avoid the buildup of disease and pests that is common with mono-cropping, which is the practice of growing the same crop on the same land year after year after year. When rotating crops, each succeeding crop must belong to a family different from the previous crop. Why Employ Crop Rotation? Crop rotation has many benefits, arguably the most important of which is keeping pests and disease at bay. Since many pest insects and disease-causing

organisms are host specific, rotating crops helps ensure these insect pests and harmful organisms cannot make a permanent home or have access to a permanent source of food. If crops aren't rotated, then the insect pests and organisms have a constant source of food, enabling them to live longer and do more damage to crops as a result. But crop rotation isn't only beneficial to crops. Crop rotation can also promote healthy soil. Different crops have different nutrient needs, so rotating crops with different nutrient needs helps avoid the

depletion of any one element present in the soil. Soil structure is often better when crops are rotated as well. Some crops are deep-rooting while others are shallow rooting. By alternating between the two, planters can break up any subsoil that might have grown compacted. Crop rotation also offers environmental and financial benefits by reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals to fight pests. By rotating crops, planters are making it much harder for pests to thrive, without having to spend money on costly and often environmentally harmful pesticides.

SALUTE TO AG

Though it's easy for suburbanites or city dwellers to go months, if not years, without seeing a farm, the most recent agriculture census for which information is available notes that in 2007 there were 2.1 million farms in the United States. Those farms spanned 922 million acres, shedding light on the fact that while many Americans might not see farms on a daily basis, that doesn't mean the country isn't still a great home to farmland. While farming might once have been a part of most Americans' daily lives,
