well about what’s going on” when working on a customer’s vehicle.

Similar to Illinois of the last century, Paul Romano, owner of Romano True Value Hardware, said perhaps the fix was in on this vote.

“We must have stuffed the ballot box,” Romano joked after learning his store was selected as the favorite hardware store in the area by the readers of The Daily Nonpareil.

But stuffing the ballot box is not necessary when you provide quality service to your customers.

In business for seven years, Romano said he thinks customers like his store because he and his staff put forth effort.

“I think we try harder,” he said. “We’re friendly, when you walk through the door, you get greeted, and you can always find a body to help you when you need help as opposed to waiting for someone to show up.”

That extra effort has help dozens of people after the recent hailstorm on Aug. 18.

Romano’s has seen the demand for screen and window repair skyrocket, yet they have been able to keep the turnaround time to days rather than weeks.

“We make an effort to get these things done and back to the customer so they can get them back on their homes,” he said.

For the ninth year in a row, Bambi’s has been named as the best health food store in the area.

“I never take it for granted,” said Wilson, who added she hopes her store was selected again for the same reason as the last eight years: Personal attention.

“We give personal attention and information our customers are looking for,” she said. “If we don’t have the information, we certainly find it for them.”

While a lot of larger stores have moved aggressively toward offering health foods, and personalized customer service, Wilson said they still can’t match her intimate shop.

“I still think a mom and pop shop has the best customer service,” she said.

“They know we are going to offer them valid information, not a sales pitch.”

Lynch’s has been a landmark in Council Bluffs for nearly 25 years.

“Mike has been metal-smithing for a long time,” she said. “We are also both educated through the Gemological Institute of America.”

Lynch said they try to keep on top of the public’s desires, and that includes offering more than just jewelry. Hot new items include collegiate and professional football team jewelry and watches, engraved roses for special occasions and charms that can include pictures of customers’ children. Chocolate and irradiated diamonds – which are heat treated to change colors – are also popular.

“We try to keep up on what the public wants,” Lynch said. “And we are affordable.”

The store can also help customers design their own piece of heirloom jewelry.

The hotel operates Main Event Catering and offers free shuttle service to the airport and other destinations within a five-mile radius.

Patrons like being attached to Ameristar Casino but not actually in it, Murphy said.

That gives them easy access to Ameristar’s restaurants and entertainment.
