2011 Legislative year theme: Catching up Kevin Brown Publisher If the tone of the Dec. 7 Legislative Forum hosted in Logan is any indication of what is in store for Iowans in the upcoming legislative session, the theme will be “playing catch up and anteing up more in tax revenues.” Examples of significant issues – that will impact Harrison County pocketbooks – raised at the forum include: * Talk about a potential fuel tax increase to fund road and bridge repairs in Iowa. * Discussion of potential moves to lower the commercial and industrial tax rates while still attempting to protect residential and agricultural tax percentages.

* Debate on a plan to be explored next year that could dramatically impact the level of mental health services – and who pays for those services – available to Harrison County residents. * Detail of the governor’s new Blue Print for education in Iowa that some say could dramatically limit local control by school boards of teacher pay, evaluations and reward incentives. If you didn’t attend the Dec. 7 Western Iowa Legislative Forum hosted by the Harrison County Development Corporation (HCDC) at the Logan Community Center you missed those topics and more potential policy issues that will impact every resident of the county in the coming legislative session. Renea Anderson, executive director of the HCDC, said a capacity
crowd of almost 80 legislators, local officials and residents attended the forum. She said the forum highlighted several issues that are critical to the competitiveness of the state in attracting new businesses and supporting the state’s infrastructure. State officials attending the forum included Iowa Senator Michael Gronstal (D-Council Bluffs), Senator James Seymour (R-Woodbine), Senator Nancy Boettger (R-Harlan), Representative Jack Drake (RGriswold), Representative Greg Forristall (R-Macedonia), Representative Jason Schultz (RSchleswig), Representative Matt Windschitl, (R-Missouri Valley), and representatives of Charles Grassley’s, Stuart Anderson, Director of Planning, Programming and SEE FORUM Modal Division of the Iowa Department of Transportation Page 2 spoke at the forum.
