Editor
Director Larry Oliver. Surveys were sent out to county businesses and cities to gather damage estimates including property, mitigation expenses and loss of business. From those sent out, approximately 20 returned estimates that totaled $3,603,151.
“I’m sure this is a really low figure,” Oliver said. “When you look at those that didn’t respond. Some just didn’t want to share or they just didn’t respond.” According to Oliver, the surveys were returned primarily from Missouri Valley but Modale also had a couple of businesses respond.

Kathleen Diggins Kane, a 1975 Lo-Ma graduate, has lived in Australia on and off for approximately 10 years. She serves as a library technician at the University of Notre Dame in Broome, an outback town in western Australia. Her breast cancer diagnosis in 2009 and treatment gave her an up close perspective on the Australian national healthcare system. She first arrived in Australia as a teacher in 1980 and stayed for almost three years. “I came because I was always fascinated by Australia and

wanted to see it first hand,” Kane said. “After living in other countries and the United States, I returned to Australia in 1994 and married Brian in 1997.” According to Kane, the public Australian healthcare system has preventative health measures that catch problems before they get too serious. “I am a living example of this,” she said. According to Kane, when women turn 50, they are contacted by mail with an offer of a free breast examination completed by a visiting mammography mobile unit. “So at age 50 I utilized the mobile unit and was consequently given a clean bill of
health and told I would be contacted in another two years,” she said. In 2009, she received notice again for the routine mammogram, with very different results. “Within two days I was phoned and asked to return to the mobile van,” Kane said. “I had a more thorough mammogram and within two days was asked to see my local doctor. He informed me that I needed to travel to Perth, our state capital 1,000 miles south of our hometown of Broome in Western Australia, and have a biopsy on

Editor Making the decision to become a volunteer fireman can’t be taken lightly nowadays. With all the new requirements for training, it is a huge commitment. According to Logan Fire Chief Craig Charbonneau, anyone on the department now must be Fire Fighter I trained or an EMT. Just the volunteer time spent earning those certifications is mind boggling – 160 hours to be a certified EMT and 60 hours for Fire Fighter I. Plus, all members must recertify every two years.
The time spent in earning those certifications doesn’t include the time spent in volunteer work with the department, taking part in training exercises and meetings, not to mention actually fighting fires and answering rescue calls. Oct. 6, several Logan Fire Department members spent the day at LoganMagnolia taking all elementary classes through the Denison Fire Safety Trailer. The trailer gives children the opportunity to learn about kitchen safety as well SEE FIREMEN Page 2
