The castle designs of Ida Grove Ida Grove is known for its castle-themed buildings.

This signature style is due to Midwest Industries founder and owner Byron Godbersen (1925-2003). He used the castle design in his buildings.

The design was echoed in this landmark welcoming visitors and residents to Ida Grove.

Additional municipal projects continuing the theme include a stone towered suspension bridge that was built to span the Odebolt Creek and the Ida Grove County Clubhouse. These projects were completed during the 1960s and 1970s.

Besides the municipal projects the medieval castle motif was used by many private builders on other projects from businesses, to residential developments, and hangars at the airport for the next 20 years.

A history of Ida Grove Named after Mount Ida in Greece

by Greg Forbes Ida County was named in 1851 after Mount Ida in Greece. Early surveyors observed the burning fires of Indians camped high on the hill and commented on the resemblance to the festival fires on Mount Ida. Early Ida County lacked an abundance of people and business because of the absence of a railroad. However, a few stores served the small amount of settlers.

In 1877, a railroad was installed through modern day Ida Grove. Residents of a small town located slightly north of Ida Grove moved their homes and businesses to the new settlement.

Ida Grove was officially incorporated in 1878.

Eventually, Ida Grove went from a quiet town to a bustling railroad community.

In the 1880s, immigrants started arriving in Ida Grove seeking labor and a place to start a new life.

According to Conley Wolterman of the Ida Grove Historic Society, as many as nine immigrant cars would stop in Ida County and deliver new citizens.

Moorehead House Museum pays homage to pioneer family, history of community

by Greg Forbes While the Stagecoach Inn was the original home of the Moorehead family, a tall, red building is known throughout Ida Grove as the current Moorehead House.

The house, purchased

by Dr. Giles Moorehead, son of John, currently serves as a museum.

Originally constructed in 1883, the house contained three bedrooms both upstairs and downstairs. In 1982, the Ida Grove Historical Society was given the house and began renovations.

According to Conley Wolterman of the Ida Grove Historical Society, a lot of cosmetic work was done on the interior. The old bathrooms were removed and all rooms were remodeled to replicate their original appearance.

well, the historical society added a stairwell for tourists.

Repairs were also made to the siding and roof.

Rec center a facility for many activities

Stagecoach Inn stands as reminder of the “old days”

by Greg Forbes Amid the creeks and castles of Ida Grove, a reminder of the “old days” still stands at Moorehead Pioneer Park on the west edge of town.

The Stagecoach Inn served as the original home to prominent pioneers John Moorehead and his wife Martha. The Mooreheads established their home in Ida County in June of 1856.

They built a one-room log house near a grove of oak trees where they raised their five children.

After a blizzard stranded 20 travelers in the Moorehead home for an entire winter, it became a safe haven for coaches traveling along the trail that ran past the house. The Mooreheads expanded their home to 16 rooms, allowing the house to serve as a stagecoach stop, a hotel/tavern, hospital, church and community center.

According to Conley Wolterman of the Ida Grove Historical Society, two stagecoaches of carrying mail and travelers, one coming from the east and the other from the west, would arrive at noon each day. Coach drivers would blow a horn when they were less than two miles away. The horn was a signal to Martha to ready the home for visitors. She cooked and prepared beds while volunteers readied the barn for horse care.

When the travelers arrived, Martha would welcome them inside, give them a meal and offer a place to stay and rest. Drivers exchanged tired horses for rested ones.

Not only did the Stagecoach Inn serve as a hotel for weary travelers, it also offered protection against a band of renegade Sioux Indians.

Just east of the Moorehead Grove lived Inkpaduta and his 36 Sioux followers. The Sioux spent years harassing the Mooreheads and their guests. Wolterman said a person kept watch every hour and would shout warnings when a group of Indians would approach.

At the alert of an oncoming band, adults would order children into a hiding spot, which was a deep hole in the wall covered by a dresser. Kids would stay there until the threat was over.

Several times, Inkpaduta would enter the house and steal from and threaten Martha. One incident involved a piece of calico cloth from which Martha was fashioning a dress for her daughter Anna. Inkpaduta broke into the home and wrestled the cloth away from Martha. He then fled from the house with the unfinished dress on his head. Martha had to make another trip to Fort Dodge to get a new piece of fabric.

After Inkpaduta left the Ida Grove area, he and his band became infamous for their involvement in the Spirit Lake Massacre, which led to the murders of as many as 40 settlers during a four day span.

Despite Inkpaduta’s departure, Indians remained a threat to the early life of Ida Grove. Wolterman stated brigades were always out walking around the ridge,

looking out for possible hostiles. When a band was located, women, elderly and children fled Ida Grove across the Odebolt Creek to a safe house in Denison. On more than one occasion, a nine-year-old girl was responsible for the safety of the other refugees.

Today, the Stagecoach Inn still has axe marks in the floor where John chopped wood. The Inn is on the National Register of Historic Places and is available for tour by appointment by calling Dale Willendorf (712) 364-2715 or Steve Wilkens (712) 364-4497 or on special open house days.

Moorehead Pioneer Park boasts another building from the early days of Ida Grove. The Old Fashioned Country Schoolhouse is located on the west edge of Pioneer Park.

The schoolhouse was built in 1882 and hosted classes until 1957.

Every year, the schoolhouse is the location of Old Fashioned Country School Days. Two retired teachers volunteer to teach area fourth graders the same way children from the late 1800s learned.

Wolterman said students write with old-fashioned pens using inkwells as well as learn curriculum such as arithmetic, orthology and geography.

Outside the schoolhouse is a flagpole waving a flag from the old-fashioned schoolhouse era with just 38 stars.

GOMACO Trolleys keep history alive

by Greg Forbes The colorful, old-style trolleys cruising down the street in some cities may have an Iowa touch.

GOMACO Trolleys refurbishes and completely builds “Victorian” style trolleys for cities, state parks, shopping malls and more.

The trolley projects started in 1982 as a result of an advertisement in Commerce Daily Magazine, which tells manufacturers what the government is interested in buying.

Harold Godbersen told the carpentry crew to look for an ad to get more work for the company.

One employee saw a Massachusetts park looking for a new trolley to carry customers around the confines of the park. The employee knew Godbersen had an interest in oldfashioned automobiles so he pitched the idea. Godbersen loved the idea and took the job.

According to John Kallin, GOMACO Trolley manufacturer, the crew built the trolley from scratch. They received some items from the Massachusetts park that were unavailable on the market and used a few retired trolleys from Melbourne, Australia, as reference.

Since the initial trolley, Kallin said GOMACO has produced more than 40 cars. Some are refinished models and some are built from the ground up.

While most trolleys serve transit purposes, some have been used for decorations in parks. GOMACO constructed a trolley, which was installed as an entrance to the Philadelphia Subway system.

Since GOMACO specializes in heritage trolleys (old fashioned), the goal is to make the trolleys look as authentic as possible, including accurate paint, seating and motor system. In fact, most places utilizing the Heritage Trolleys re-

quire the motorman and conductor to dress like trolley attendants of a bygone era.

Every trolley differs on detail, difficulty and length of construction. Kallin recalled the most difficult trolley – one sent to Portland, Oregon. The buyers in Portland wanted a faster trolley with bigger wheels. GOMACO had the task of completely re-engineering the bottom of the trolley.

“We needed to get bigger trucks,” Kallin said. “Everything about that project was difficult, but it all worked eventually. It took a lot of engineering.”

GOMACO continues to make trolleys not only to continue what Harold Godbersen started, but Kallin believes, to keep a part of history alive.

“Trolleys were very popular,” Kallin said. “But they were eventually pushed out the door by buses. Now, a lot of people that had trolleys wish they had them back.”

Reitz said his ownership started as just a joke, but when Grothe became ready to sell the building, he approached Reitz with an offer. Currently, Ida Bowl employs 12 workers, including Reitz.

Since Reitz’s has owned Ida Bowl, he has installed automatic score keepers, synthetic lanes, new ceiling tiles and has redone the bar and kitchen to the restaurant.

Reitz stated besides bowling, a main draw to Ida Bowl are the burgers served at the restaurant.

Customers visiting the bowling alley and the restaurant often comment on the great service and quality of food.

“People really like our bartenders and our cooks,” Reitz said.

Many people that are new to the bowling alley may be surprised by the quality and variety of food served.

“It’s more than just a burger and fries,” Reitz said.

Reitz mentioned he loves running the bowling alley because of the smiles constantly on customer’s faces. He said children that attend birthday parties at the bowling alley always have smiles on their faces no matter what their score is.

While Reitz and the staff have put countless hours and work into the upkeep of the establishment, Ida Bowl is always looking for ways to improve and make the experience for customers better.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church under construction

Construction on a new Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove actually started with a campaign theme, “Diamonds in a new setting.” The new building was designed to incorporate stained glass windows from the old church – built in 1897, the alter, stations of the cross, communion rails, and other items of importance. Physical construction began in September of 2010 and is expected to be completed in November of 2011. The Catholic church has been in existence in Ida Grove for more than 115 years. Recreation in Ida Grove Pool improved with twin waterslides this year The swimming pool of Ida Grove offers friends and families a place to enjoy the summer months.

The current facility opened in the spring of 1990 on top of the old pool. It cost approximately $500,000.

This year marked the first season the Ida Grove swimming pool featured twin waterslides. The project, which was constructed by Associated Pool Works of Bismarck, North Dakota, cost $300,000. The

city of Ida Grove paid for a third of the cost while the remainder was covered by fundraising.

Ida Grove also has an indoor recreation center, built in 2003. The facility features racquetball courts, a gymnasium, indoor pool/hot tub/sauna, a walking track, a golf room and a conference center. It was constructed by Roadie Construction of Ida Grove and volunteers. It was primarily funded by donations and contributions.

Not many years later, North Star Community Credit Union constructed a new building at 215 Moorehead Avenue, moving there in January 2002.

North Star Community Credit Union in Ida Grove is a branch office of North Star Community Credit Union in Cherokee, which was established in 1972. Next year North Star Community Credit Union will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

North Star Community Credit Union opened in Ida Grove to expand its membership to other counties. North Star Community Credit Union is in the process of expanding with its third location, which will be in Sanborn.

Among all the locations, North Star Community Credit Union has 9,505 members, including 2,530 members at the Ida Grove branch.

OA-BCIG students receive scholarships through support of communities Students who graduate from the OABCIG (Odebolt Arthur-Battle Creek Ida Grove) school district will receive at least one scholarship, and many graduates receive several scholarships. In fact, sixtynine 2011 graduates were awarded scholarships totaling nearly $400,000.

Of this total, $186,069 was awarded through the local scholarship foundation in amounts ranging from $2,925 to $3,675 per student.

The remaining $213,000 was awarded from more than 55 community businesses, organizations, churches, trusts, memorials and individuals with scholarships ranging from a few hundred dollars to $48,000 per student.

The local foundation, established in 1994 as the BCIG Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation, recently changed its name to the OABCIG Dollars for Scholars Foundation to reflect the whole-grade sharing agreement between the Odebolt-Arthur and Battle Creek-Ida Grove school districts.

Since the foundation was established, scholarships totaling $1,761,717 have been awarded to 796 BCIG graduates and 141 OA-BCIG graduates.

A couple factors make the foundation unique. First, it provides scholarships for all graduating seniors who apply; and secondly, not only do the students receive a scholarship for their first year of higher education, but their second and third years also.

Money to fund the scholarships comes from a variety of sources including endowments from estates, businesses and organizations, as well as, pledges, trusts, memorials, fundraisers, return on in-

vestments and the increased value of assets. An endowment gift of $1.3 million from the estate of Ed and Berniece Pruehs funds the second- and third-year scholarships.

The foundation’s main fundraiser, the Whitey Thompson Hike-Bike-A-thon, sponsored by United Bank of Iowa, takes place each year in May. In 2011, 619 students helped raise $57,971. Over the past 17 years, Hike Bike has generated $480,210 in net proceeds.

Another substantial fundraiser was the Golf Classic which generated more than $250,000 in 12 years. Other fundraisers have included a talent show, hoop shoot, pop can refunds, alumni book sales, a 5K run, Gomaco trolley tours, pancake breakfasts and a dinner with entertainment.

The OABCIG Dollars for Scholars Foundation sincerely appreciates the investment communities have made to the youth. Not only have the communities shown the students the importance of higher education by their generous donations of scholarships and support of foundation fundraisers, but they have also shown their appreciation to students who are involved in school activities and sports competitions by their dedicated attendance at these events. The students at OA-BCIG would agree their communities are behind them every step of the way.

The opportunity for scholarships is just one of the reasons to choose to live in the OA-BCIG school district. The scholarship foundation sincerely appreciates the past support and looks forward to continued support in the future.
