THE CENTER FOR THE CULTURAL ARTS

Attracting Visitors to Cultural Centers Through the Use of Uncanny Architectural Theory in the use of Interior Architecture and Design

Despite the allure of other entertainment attractions, cultural centers and exhibitions/museums remain an important distance for many individuals. By illuminating human history and celebrating our shared heritage, cultural centers offer a unique opportunity for learning, reflecting, and engaging.

Therefore, it is worth considering what draws people to cultural centers and how we can continue to encourage their importance in our communities. The main design problem of this project lies in enhancing the visitor experience through influencing how the subconscious mind perceives the built environment to encourage the use and repeat of the visit.

The use of design metaphor is the main signifier of uncanny architectural concept. In order to display the authenticity of different cultures, the concept of this design celebrates the chance of coexistence and transparency of diverse Asian cultures that are underrepresented. Just like their difference and uniqueness, each rain droplet represents the different sizes, shapes, and personas. At the end of the day, as we exist in this world, we also come together despite our differences and create extraordinary interconnections. This metaphor translates into the oscillating patterns created by the exact moments when the water droplets hit the water layer. Inspired by this beautiful pattern that blends into the adjacent droplets, the cultures have the chance to diffuse and interact with each other’s values and differences. Therefore, this cultural center will showcase rotating representations of clusters of diverse cultures every season. The ultimate goal of this project is to serve as a reminder that aims to convey a cultural significance through deconstructing the established/conventional way of designing cultural centers and a sense of unexpectedness to the visitors. The research aimed to explore the concept of uncanny architecture and various techniques for conceptualizing it, with the goal of establishing design standards for the interior architecture and design of a cultural center.

The meaning of objects relates to the social interactions with others, therefore creates the basis of cultural interaction and conversation. -THIRD PLACE THEORY - Influencing people on how community/cultural center can be their third choice of destination right after their home and workplace -PLACE ATTACHMENT - settings have deep meaning and provide restorative environment while providing availability of facilities, opportunities, and resources, a sense of belonging. -A SENSE OF PLACE - occurs for a person when “a level of comfort and feelings of safety associated with a place translates to a sense of belonging -Use of sliding, demountable partitions, panels and doors -Multifunctional furniture that promotes engagement accommodates different activities -Multi-functional event/ workshop rooms to provide flexible programming UNCANNY PAUSE MOMENTS FLEXIBILITY & FUNCTIONALITY PLACE THEORIES TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION 3D SKETCHES INTERIOR SITE ANALYSIS ENTRY VIEW The lobby intergrates a screen wall that displays design metaphor of the cluster of culture interacting rejecting the idea of placing ubiquitous motifs and symbols.
