Welcome to Nomad Gossip Magazine!

Dear Reader, I can’t tell you how overjoyed I am that you have the very first issue of NGM in your hands. What a ride.

Who’d have thought that after pitching NGM on a digital nomad cruise, we’d be here as the honoured voice of the community. Although we’ve been supported by just the right people at the right time, it’s not all been plain sailing. I can’t tell you how many experts from the industry who warned me of our inevitable failure, and if I had a dollar for every “Don’t do it” I’d be a millionaire. I rejected their sage wisdom because I felt I had no choice. Too many nomads had expressed an interest in NGM and my somewhat illogical belief in it was too strong. So instead, I listened to the psycho-genius Richard Brandson, who’s mantra is always a firm, “Screw it. Let’s do it!”

This glossy magazine would not exist if not for this detranged yet endearing optimism, as well as the Nomad Cruise Piranha Tank Show, where I first pitched NGM. And my pitch would have surely sucked without the support of: Olga Isaeva, Vishal Agarwala, Kyle Basset, and Anna Egorova (aka the “Salad Gang” ), so a huge thanks to you all. Then Anna Egorova at Curves.Digital created all our web presence and branding. Then there was my mentor, Tatiana Illarionova, who was with me at every step, along with all the writers, editors, designers... okay, this is turning into an Emmy Awards speech. This magazine is dedicated to you, reader, as well as the growth of the digital nomad industry; the passionate travel movement fueled by individuals that have dared to risk it all in the name of something beautiful, in the name of living the dream, in the name of creating communities that have never existed before.

I'm sure it’s just the beginning for us.

I can’t tell you how deeply grateful I am for digital nomadism. I was born in Ukraine, and my background was not privileged to say the least. Everything I have today; my education, my skillset and my financial freedom, came to me throughout my digital nomad journey. When COVID hit, I was safe, because I made my living online. When Russia invaded Ukraine, I was safe again in so many ways because of digital nomadism.

For this, I am inexplicably appreciative; it’s a blessing I never forget to count.

Yes, digital nomadism facilitates pleasure. But it also facilitates survival, personal development, resilience, connection, friendship, love and all-round adaptability in an ever-changing world. And I’m glad you’re part of it.

CHristoph Huebner Christoph Huebner is a long-term perpetual traveler and is often called "the" digital nomad of the insurance industry. Since 2010 his expertise has been in health insurance and medical underwriting.

As a founder of NOMADS.insure he is an independent broker specialized in digital nomads' global health insurance, licensed by the Financial Supervision Authority of Estonia. Marina Iakovleva Raised in Moscow, Marina moved to Toronto, Canada when she was twelve. In her mid-20s, she started traveling, connecting with, and yes, you know it — dating people internationally. It is through these romantic encounters, some fleeting, others serious, that her fascination with the topic began. She now runs a popular YouTube channel, Dating Beyond Borders, focusing on cultural intricacies when it comes to connecting with and dating around the world. Marina has recently published a book on dating in Scandinavia and currently runs the Dating Beyond Borders Podcast where she further explores the topic of culture.

Stella Airoldi runs a social business and foundation, while living all over the world. Stella used to be a bit of a study nerd and has two Master Degrees (in International Law and in Politics). Once she left her books behind, she worked in several development organizations around the world. Stella started her nomadic lifestyle in 2013, which includes renting out her home in Europe and allows her to dedicate a significant portion of her time to helping those in need. She founded together with her two Ugandan friends Susan Laker and Aidah Wafula 22STARS Jewellery: an online webshop selling handmade products from Uganda that brings people out of poverty. Five years later, in 2017, the trio founded the 22STARS Foundation which additionally created 490 school sponsorships for children in Uganda.

Stella also organises tourism trips to Uganda with her oranisation called Social Impact Nomads.

Bori VIGH Budapest-born Bori Vigh is Hungary's top digital nomad, globe-trotting for over 8 years now! She's the fun-loving host of the Nomad Cruise and the voice behind the "In Search of Something Different" podcast. Giang Cao Giang has been bouncing around working wherever she feels at home for more than 10 years. Now back in her home base in Vietnam, she's always up for occasional adventures, soaking in new inspirations and making new friends. Let's just say, design is her thing, but so is embracing the chill vibes of life.

If a picture paints a thousand words, then Tijmen has ‘written’ a body of work that tells stories that you simply can’t tear yourself away from. As a photographer and videographer, he has captured moments in time so perfect you can imagine yourself in each of them.

This guy has been lucky enough to have captured beautiful footage all over the world. Besides his love for travel photography, his clients include small sustainable local brands, international organizations, TV stations, national newspapers, and a great variety of international bands and festivals.

I remember it like it was yesterday: I was visiting my home country after about 1.5 years on the go. As I was chewing a falafel, after a night out in Budapest, a good looking guy approached me and we started to talk casually. After a short intro from my side about my fabulous life as a digital nomad, he looked at me and asked the question that we all heard a million times:

“So what are you running away from?”

The immediate response in my head was: surely I am running away from stupid questions like yours - but I just smiled politely, and left

the conversation. I walked away from him, with my falafel still in my mouth, and furious mumblings in my mind, about good looking guys judging my life choices to live as a full-time traveler.

It took me close to a decade to understand and admit that I indeed was running away from something…I am Bori, and I am terrified of imperfection.

It never starts out this way.

Most people start the nomad journey with a deep calling around the notions that there should be more to life than just the 9-5.

There should be something more than waiting for our lunch break, and Friday night drinks, and the scheduled twenty-something days of holidays per annum. There had to be another way, right?

So we go traveling, first with the intention to see what else is out there: to discover new cultures, to meet new people, to im-

merse ourselves in nature, to thrive over survive. The freedom that comes with the nomad lifestyle especially after being stuck in an office for years - is nothing less than intoxicating.

And then, the next amazing aspect of this lifestyle hits us: we form part of a community. We bond with like-minded people, adventurers, curious and also super happy about their lives and just as free as we are. We find where we belong among strangers who share the same values as us.

When we talk about the core values of nomads, we usually name freedom as the dominant one. But there is another value that I think most of us have: curiosity. We are all out there, cause we wanted to know if there are other, better ways to build a business, to work, and to connect to each other. We want to know what is the most optimal way to keep our bodies healthy, to invest our money, or to change any-

thing that we are not 100% happy with. And my friends, I have bad news, this curiosity is a gateway value to a big problem. Yes, this curiosity of a better way of life can lead you down the never-to-return path of perfectionism.

Think about it: we work in the best offices (#officeoftheday), we eat the best food and drink our coffee just as we like it. And if a particular city doesn't have our perfectly-temperate matcha latte with organic almond milk and unicorn rainbows - we either leave the city, or we gentrify places till they become perfect for us.

Ultimately we found that our wanderlust for something new, somehow along the way pivoted, and made us create our own Barbieland.

Having the power to change the weather, would be a superpower many would want, and we have it. I would never have dreamed that one day I would have the possibility to live in an eternal summer for the rest of my life - if I chose to.

This sounds like a dream, but is it really? Running away from winter gives us less freedom to choose to stay long-term, to have a place to call home. It also puts us in a state of never-ending decision-making on where to live, work, stay fit, and make new friends.

I wonder if it is worth stopping sometimes, and asking ourselves, are we following the sun, or are we just running away from the misty drizzle?

As we become a nomad, and we are living by the terms of our freedom - we understand that we have infinite possibilities. We don’t have to stay, if we don’t like where we are. That is the key difference between us and our non-nomadic friends. We know there is a better place somewhere and we know how to get there.

I'm worried that there will never be a way for us to stay because we know we can leave.

This notion also applies to our careers on the road. Many nomadic entrepreneurs fall into the trap of dropping projects when the novelty wears off in the same way we drop our locations. They also fall into the habit of saying yes to too many new projects, or as the literate call this phenomenon: “the shiny bright project syndrome.” They are curious. Can’t blame them. But usually, the beginnings of these projects come with a honey-moon stage, when we sketch, and strategize - drowning in dopamine until something pops up (usually a fresh, sexier and more perfect-for-us

now? Let me hit you with some rude facts. According to a recent study, 66 percent of digital nomads are single.

And out of these, only 13% are looking to find a committed, monogamous relationship. Coincidence?

When I had a conversation about this with a researcher friend of mine, he said the same thing that my “normal” friends say: digital nomads are single, because they are too individualistic.

As freedom is their core value, they can not compromise, and they would not even be able to agree on where to travel next.

I'm skeptical of this whole idea

66 % of digital nomads are single, And out of these, only 13% are looking to find a committed, monogamous relationship project) and all those poor half-assed, half-committed, half-dreams are still waiting to be executed in our notebook of 2019. Committed. Something us nomads seem to have issues with.

If you're someone with professional commitment issues, you'll understand this. It all sounded so good at first, but somehow, you now have at least two businesses on the go and about a million other projects that keep you as busy as a beaver. But will you see any of them to the end, I wonder?

As soon as you realize you have infinite possibilities to make money, it gets harder to commit to just ONE project. Although we all know that finding focus is what we all need to scale.

Then there’s the big one.

that nomads are single because they can't agree on where to travel with their partners. For nomads, deciding the next destination is more like choosing the next movie to watch on Netflix. Thailand or Bali? It is not a deal breaker. The big problem is: we don’t have a deal to break in the first place.

While in this conversation with the researcher, I looked down at the most perfect shakshuka I had ever seen in front of me, in a perfectly lush green jungle restaurant, on the best island I had ever visited, and it suddenly dawned on me: what if we made our lives so perfect that even the smallest sign of someone else’s imperfection would send us running for the hills of singledom, forever?

Boohoo. So hey, Bori, are you telling us that digital nomads are actually nothing but gloomy lost souls, who are overworked, “foreveralone” and can be easily spooked by a cold breeze?

Of course not. But I will say that - we are - just like the whole world around us - a work in progress, with our own imperfections.

(Don’t you just love the irony?)

The good news is that we have something in our pocket that got us into this situation and something that can get us out of it too.

And that’s curiosity. here is an idea: let’s be curious about imperfection, and about the good it can bring us.

When the going gets tough, will I get going? I know I could leave, but what would happen if I stayed?

Maybe it's a good thing that we can’t have everything perfect in life, as if we’re ordering our environments, careers and relationships a la carte. And maybe, just maybe, nowhere, nothing and nobody is perfect in the first place, and we were chasing an ilusion this entire time, hungry for a meal that would never be able to fill us. So perhaps we should stop chasing ‘perfect’ and get curious about a life that’s good enough?

As a social entrepreneur, Tarek has established organizations such as Nomads Giving Back and Nomads SkillShare, fostering a thriving community of nomads worldwide. And we got a golden opportunity to interview him for our very first edition of Nomad Gossip Magazine.

There are moments when everything seems messy and incomplete, even when you have a stable corporate job, a comfortable home, and a substantial bank balance accrued through years of hard work. Despite these external markers of success, a lingering sense of emptiness can persist, stemming from the desire to uncover true purpose.

Tarek Kholoussy, armed with an MBA in Finance and a background in some of the most prominent financial organizations in London and New York, was a fine example of this. He was living the American Dream but felt unhappy and unhealthy. He left his high-flying lifestyle at the age of 33 to explore the real world beyond the office, transforming him into a nomad with over 100 countries stamped on his passport and 25 marathons under his belt. Currently residing between Medellin, Colombia, and Bali, Indonesia, Tarek, happily single at 44, stands as a genuine source of inspiration.

As a social entrepreneur, Tarek has established organizations such as Nomads Giving Back and Nomads SkillShare, fostering a thriving community of nomads worldwide.

How has your experience been during the five years with Nomads Giving Back?

I'm getting a bit emotional thinking about the fiveyear milestone, our fifth anniversary is on November 22nd. I've always been someone who pays attention to the dates and the anniversaries and birthdays. It's a great time to acknowledge the things we love, the people we love, the experiences, the communities. And for Nomads Giving Back, five years is a big day.

Five years ago, you went on the Nomad Cruise, where you announced Nomads Giving Back for the first time. Can you go back and tell our readers the story of how this happened?

When my 40th birthday was coming up, I decided to go big and make an announcement to the world: I had hit my three big goals. I wanted to explore 100 countries to fuel my soul. I wanted to run 25 marathons to challenge my body. And I wanted to create a social enterprise to expand my mind and heart. I had the opportunity to give a speech on my lessons learned from 100 countries, 25 marathons, and one social enterprise on the Nomads Cruise to an audience of more than 500 nomads. It was the first time I was addressing such a large audience and my first time speaking about personal experiences, and it was then that I shared my newfound mission. I said "Right now I'm going to announce the vision for Nomads Giving Back: to inspire you to give back to the communities you call home away from home. If this resonates with any of you, let me know and let's do this."

And then incredible people joined me, like Johannes, the founder of Nomad Cruise. When you put a vision out there that inspires people, that's what moves forward and advances an idea from concept to reality. So it does take courage, but once you have that thought with inspiration, it takes a life of its own. That's what happened with Nomads Giving Back.

What was your life like before you became a nomad?

I was a New York City suit-and-tie corporate guy before I found my true purpose. I was working a lot of hours with very intense, high-powered people: Manhattan skyscrapers, and banks like Goldman Sachs.

I wasn't into health or fitness and was overworked and burned out. My life looked different, the world looked different, I looked different, very different. I had short hair, was clean-shaven, and was more pale because I hardly saw the sun. I usually had a belly.

Most people wouldn't even recognize me now if they met me 10 years ago. Although I was living the "American Dream," on the inside, I wasn't feeling fulfilled. I craved more meaning in my life. Large companies are very profit-focused. There's less heart, less meaning, 19

less positive impact. And it was more about playing a game that I didn't find entertaining anymore.

That said, everything was going fine, in a way, until the 9-11 attack happened. I was living in New York City at the time. And it was devastating on many levels.

The event also led partly to the economy going down, and this paired with my company going through one of the biggest corporate scandals in our lifetime, I lost everything.

I went from “I'm going to take over the world, I'm in New York City working my dream job,” to 9-11 and getting made redundant. I was unemployed for months and I went into a deep depression at that time.

It taught me that I never wanted to feel that vulnerable again. It gave me this drive that I never had before to succeed so much in work and in life that I just worked and worked and worked. I graduated with a top MBA, with honours, and got another high-flying job at Goldman Sachs. Before I knew it, I was working even harder than I was before. It took another series of void-of-meaning years of unhappiness and poor health to realise that I wasn’t where I was meant to be.

What’s life like now?

In some ways, I'm living my true dream life. My two favourite destinations of choice right now are Bali and Medellín, and that's where I settled down for the last five years. What I like about my life now is that I spend a lot of my energy on initiatives and projects that I care

deeply about with people who resonate with me and who share the values I believe in. One of the things I love about Nomads Giving Back is that it’s created a global community of true changemakers who positively contribute to the countries they call home. I now get to choose my reality, not just where I am, but who I share my energy with. We have to be careful about who we surround ourselves with in life, and Nomads Giving Back has given me the opportunity to connect with some of the best people I’ve ever met. And we all share that same vision to create a community all about giving back and sharing skills.

How did you sustain Nomads Giving Back over the last five years?

We’ve had a lot of help! Our team’s top three goals are Impact, Community and Sustainability. While we’ve made wonderful progress in growing our impact and building our community, we have yet to reach sustainability. And I was self-funding the shortfall. But because of some of the new ideas and some of the supporters, we're getting closer to financial stability. A lot of people are sharing their energy and their skills with us. Amazing volunteers are redoing our website because a fantastic website designer who wants to see this vision survive decided to help out with his team.

That’s why volunteering for social causes can be so impactful. A lot of nomads are earning $10 an hour, $50 an hour, $100 an hour from building websites, marketing, project management, you name it. If you can share a $50-an-hour, a $100-an-hour skill, it can save an organization. Also, we have things like the volunteer matching program that's free. If someone's feeling inspired, even for five minutes, they can fill out the form, and we'll match them with the social cause that they're passionate about to share a skill that they're happy to share. The volunteers and passionate team members who collaborate with us are the backbone of this effort.

What meaningful impact has Nomads Giving Back had?

We have a volunteer matching program where we help aspiring volunteers volunteer, and we support the nonprofits and the social causes that they like through them. We have a scholarship program where we've given out almost 100 scholarships to people from the Global South who wouldn't have afforded training courses otherwise. I feel the most impact we've had has been through the people who joined our team and who we work with daily - teaching them valuable hard skills and mentoring them on essential soft skills. For example - after the Nomad Cruise and the fun New Year's Eve party in Rio, I flew off the Medellin, and that's where I hired my first teammate; her name is

What I missed in my early career was the human touch and heart, as many of those companies were solely focused on profits. We aim to provide not just skills but also a sense of community and heart in what we do.

We are like a prism; we want to help you create an exponential impact.

Manuela; she is a Colombian, and she has been a part of our family ever since.

Manu gained the opportunity to help lead our social enterprise from the ground up - from just the two of us to leading more than a hundred teammates around the world. She gained valuable skills in leadership, project management, event management, marketing and more. She eventually became our Chief of Staff and moved from her homeland of Colombia to join me in Bali - which was a dream come true for her. Eventually, she was offered her dream remote job while also making a positive impact on so many people all around the world. I’m so happy for her.

Then there's another young woman named Vera, from Indonesia, who got connected to our organization and heard that we had scholarships for our courses. She was working at a salon six days a week. Our team trained her on how to become a social media manager and virtual assistant but more importantly, mentored her on soft skills and built her confidence to eventually quit her job at the salon to become a remote freelancer for several clients.

Wisnu, who joined us at just 17, began as a volunteer with us and is now our Head of Operations at age 20. He's been learning entrepreneurial skills, making connections, and becoming an impressive young leader. He's even hired Indonesian volunteers from his college and is mentoring them. These impressive teammates have experienced transformative growth within our community, and it's moments like these that inspire more and more each day. What I missed in my early career was the human touch, as many of the

companies I worked for were solely focused on profits.

We aim to provide not just skills but also a sense of community and heart in what we do. It's about giving young people from developing countries a chance to learn and grow, guided by genuinely caring mentors.

That's the kind of impact that truly matters to me.

Do you support businesses as well as individuals?

Yes. So, at Nomads Giving Back, we typically help nonprofits and businesses with a social mission. We have helped many nonprofits through our events.

We've had about a hundred and eighty events by this point. There have been times when our teammates or volunteers have advised some of these businesses to volunteer with these nonprofits or raise awareness of them through their social media. You know everyone has something to give, right? They might not have money, but they have time. They might not have time, but they have some skills. They might be influencers and can advocate for a nonprofit cause. There’s always something that someone can give, and it's a matter of what we're trying to do to make it easier for people to share what they're happy to share.

What’s the vision for Nomads Giving Back five years from now?

I would love for this to be sustainable and more impactful... evolving to feel more like an ecosystem collective, making it possible for anyone to give back and also to benefit. So, for example, let's say you're going to help a particular initiative in Ukraine or want to do 23

something impactful with NGM, we have the resources on our team and the network to make that a reality.

We are like a prism; we want to help you create an exponential impact. Luckily, thanks to our fantastic team and supporters over the last five years, we have established an authentic brand and many valuable relationships. I am passionate about creating this playground, open for anyone who wants to give back or get involved to share their skills.

You also have another passion project, Nomad Skillshare, right?

Yes. The core objective of Nomad Skillshare is to empower individuals to get the skills necessary to lead the life they've envisioned. I see Nomad Skillshare becoming an even more valuable resource for the community – catering to those who possess talents they wish to share while sustaining themselves financially. With our huge platform, we can also promote the volunteers and their businesses, which will lead to more work for them in return. For instance, we recently hosted a successful masterclass led by a podcasting expert, drawing in a big audience. Although the masterclass was offered for free, it enhanced the overall value of our membership. Our goal is to create a marketplace ecosystem where everyone involved experiences mutual benefits. In the case of the podcasting expert, she gained increased her visibility, followers, and even acquired some clients.

Sounds great. Now back to Nomads Giving Back. We don’t wish to offend, but isn’t Nomads giving back and WorkAway a similar business?

I'm not offended at all. Workaway is an opportunity for people to travel and volunteer, and they usually get subsidized accommodation, for example. That's their primary business model, if I am not wrong. We’re not involved in accommodation, and our volunteers are typically offering professional digital skills, often remotely, while I’m not sure that’s the case most of the time for Workaway.

Okay, so your roles are remote?

So there are two ways of looking at volunteering with us. There's one where you're volunteering for our organization supporting our impact mission or the other is through our volunteer matching program where we partner you with causes. On the other hand, Workaway is doing the volunteer matching. Let me give you an example; they have a marketplace where someone's like, okay, there's a farm in Australia, and I want to live in Australia, and here's the arrangement where I live on the ranch, I work X number of hours, that's my understanding of their model. teering is sometimes in person; sometimes it's remote.

There's no money involved here, while at WorkAway, they must make money somehow. Maybe I should put Nomads Giving Back on Workaway, haha! The values and the impact are identical to matching people with bringing it to connect with locals where help is needed.

What’s more important, money or happiness?

Both, in a way. They’re linked. You know, if I’d stayed in New York, I could have continued down the path of accumulating wealth and become a millionaire by now. But happiness isn't solely determined by financial success. I've seen people at top financial firms suffer emotionally and mentally when their identity and well-being are solely tied to their jobs and income. Abundance is a mindset, not just a number in your bank account. Some six or seven-figure earners feel scarcity because they lack self-worth, while those with less money may feel abundant because they have purpose and love. So, to answer your question, what’s actually most important is having a life purpose, not just making money. It’s a purpose that leads to contentment even without extreme wealth.

Do you agree that the digital nomad lifestyle has a positive impact on mental health, helping individuals understand themselves and their needs better?

The digital nomad lifestyle can act as a catalyst for personal growth, but it's not a guarantee of positive mental health. It's more like a roller coaster compared to a treadmill. There are certainly higher highs and, at times, lower lows in the nomadic lifestyle. I've had incredible experiences, such as connecting with inspiring people at events like Mindvalley and participating in the Nomad Cruise community. These moments have contributed to higher highs that wouldn't have been possible without my nomadic journey. However, there are also challenges.

When things don't go well, and you lack the stability and support of a permanent home, community, or family, it can lead to more significant fluctuations in your mental state. The comfort of routine and familiarity is often absent when you're a digital nomad. But growth happens outside your comfort zone. When you let go of attachments and identities, embrace change, surround yourself with inspiring people, and navigate challenging times independently, you grow and become more empowered.

Do you think digital nomads have some kind of commitment issue? *Laughs* Yes, many do! The commitment issues among digital nomads can indeed be attributed to the fact that they are learning not to be overly connected to friends, partners, family, or relationships. The nomadic lifestyle often involves letting go of specific attachments. However, it's essential to distinguish between commitment and attachment. Attachment can sometimes hold you back. You might feel attached to a location, job, or relationship that doesn't serve you well. On the other hand, commitment can be a positive thing when it aligns with your goals and values.

Nomads might face commitment issues because they aren't overly attached to anything.

When you look back, do you have any regrets?

My life has undergone a remarkable transformation.

I used to be the epitome of a New York City corporate professional, working long hours in skyscrapers, striving for success. But I had no sense of fulfillment, I was just running in the rat race day and night. Now, I'm living a life that aligns with my values. I devote my energy to meaningful initiatives and work with like-minded people.

Through Nomads Giving Back, I've found a community that resonates with my vision. I have the privilege of choosing not just where I live, but the people I surround myself with. So no, I have no regrets. The DN lifestyle is right for me, and I’m happy and grateful I chose this path.

You know you’re smashing life when you’re sipping coconut water (from an actual coconut), on a white sand beach with your laptop perched on your knees.

Because you’re working.

If that’s you, you should be proud.

You’ve escaped the rat race, and you’re living a lifestyle that’s becoming increasingly en-vogue. You’re not cooped up in an office that you have to sit in noseto-nose traffic to arrive at five days a week. You don’t have to gingerly beg your boss for a two-week holiday once a year, because your entire life is a holiday. Don’t want to get dressed? You don’t have to. Just stay in your PJs and turn your camera off if you happen to have a meeting. You don’t have to worry about slap-

ping on a smile when your infuriating co-worker leans over to your desk to talk about the upcoming office Christmas party finger food selection. You’ve not got chronic back pain like your former colleagues because you’ve earned the right to move.

And move, you do, wherever the wind takes you.

It’s nothing less than a triumph, and we have ourselves to thank for it. We took the plunge. We took a risk. And now, it’s paying off.

The Sweet Smell of Freedom…

From cruising down the River Nile as you send your invoices, to sipping tea in China as you check off your inbox. From taking a dip in the calm Atlantic Ocean on your lunch break to landing your subsequent sales from a mountain cabin nestled in the Swiss Alps…You get the (very pretty) picture. The world is quite literally your oyster. There’s nothing that tastes as good as the freedom to work from anywhere your heart desires, leaving your cage-like 9-5 far behind you. Then there’s the culture, feeding your soul, not to mention your growing belly. Living and working in different lands provides an unparalleled opportunity for totally mind-blowing immersion and personal growth. You’ll learn new languages. You’ll taste new spices on your tongue. You’ll dance to new music. You’ll make new friends. You might even write new love stories…

And as for the elusive work-life balance? You’ve nailed it. DNs often share that it’s that perfect balance that’s the very top perk. When you're surrounded by stunning natural landscapes that ignite your zest for adventure or vibrant cityscapes that buzz with new opportunities, it's easier to tear yourself away from the computer and explore. And if you've been working a bit too hard, you can always reward yourself with a guilt-free siesta in your hammock, or your cozy, nostrings-attached Airbnb.

But it’s not all sunshine and reposes…

The Sour Taste of ‘NO SIGNAL’

It’s all well and good, until of course, the WiFi goes down. And you know what happens when a DN is separated from the internet, don’t you?

Sweet nothing, that’s what. Because unless you’re a nomad who sells hand-made jewelry on the road (and is probably enjoying alimony or family wealth), you need that internet. Without it, you’re as good as a chocolate fireman.

The strong dependency on WiFi and signal does impose some restrictions on the free-spirited DN, because, when you think about it, in order to make any cash at all, meet with our clients, run our businesses, or find new work opportunities to sustain our lifestyle, we’re dependent on the nearest decent WiFi box. Without its tender connection, we’d be bankrupt before we could say “What’s the WiFi password?”

A fellow NGM reader of ours lost out on an incredible job opportunity whilst in the UK back in 2019 because he lost his internet connection during his interview. By the time he got it back, the interviewer was so unimpressed that they didn’t even bother to email him back. No feedback. No second chances. Many of you have also reported having had a scheduled meeting with a client that was either canceled completely or commenced late due to being unexpectedly WiFi-Less.

When You Forget to Mute Yourself

Recently, one of our NGM readers was having a very important corporate meeting with the former CMO of Disney+, whilst in a small café in Tallinn, Estonia.

Her internet connection was functioning, but unstable. Disney+ man was visibly angry enough that he had to repeat himself over and over. The straw that broke the camel’s back, apparently, was when her traditional beetroot and strawberry summer soup arrived, and she commenced a short conversation with the waitress about the quality of the yield that time of year as he presented…only to realize she’d forgotten to mute herself.

Another NGM reader told us that, again, due to forgetting his ‘mute’ button, he’d gone to the toilet whilst on a work meeting. And we mean, a number two. Yes. He. Took. A. Dump. Live. On. A. Meeting.

Needless to say, he left the multi-million-dollar company a few months later (we can’t tell you who, sorry, but it’s a totally true story.)

Timezone Trauma!

Nobody wants to dance with them, but all nomads must learn the Time Zone Tango, like it or not. Collaborating with a team scattered across different time zones can feel like a never-ending game of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" find yourself turning into a nocturnal creature of the depths (with the hairstyle and bags under your eyes to match) just to sync up with your team, client, or dear grandmother.

Sure, you may get more time to relax during the day, but you pay for it with poor sleep. Jet lag, anyone? If you’re interested, join the DN community. We have jackets.

When Friends Are Far Away

Talking of the digital nomad community…there’s the awkward situation when…there isn’t one. Most nomads have experienced loneliness on the road at some point or another. Nobody can deny that living in paradise is an awesome privilege. But surely, it’s even better if you get to experience it with friends?

The novelty of nomadism may protect you from a loneliness-induced existential crisis for the first few months, but after that, you’ll be as thirsty for some company as a sponge for seawater. When you do find it (keep reading NGM and you will, especially if you vigilantly study our Top Sexiest Hotspots page and our events section) you’ll be rejoicing!

But there’s still a huge possibility that your new friends will move on. It’s the Nomad Way. You can’t be too attached to any place, or any person, if you’re going to thrive.

According to Regine Galanti, a clinical psychologist, digital nomadism isn’t the best lifestyle for everyone. "If you're someone who needs a space to call home to feel grounded, or needs physical proximity to the people you love, making the choice to live as a digital nomad might not be right for you." Of course, for most of the nomads we’ve met, these tough feelings have been temporary, and have passed and dissipated into joy once they’re in the swing of the new lifestyle. But for others, all they want is to E.T. GO HOME. And that’s ok.

When You’re Totally Unproductive in Paradise

Ah, the myth of productivity in paradise! While exotic locales make for Instagram-worthy backgrounds, they don't always make for the most productive work environments. Be honest with yourself, nomad. How productive do you expect yourself to be when the sun is shining, the weather is sweet, and Bob Marley is blaring from your local bar’s speakers at Happy Hour on the beach?

Balancing work with the allure of drinkin- we mean, exploration, can be a delicate act, and it's not uncommon to find yourself facing failing deadlines while your friends are off dancing or hiking to waterfalls. After all, YOLO! So if you’ve survived as a nomad for more than a month, I raise my glass to you. A toast! To the productivity pioneer! An inspiration to us all!

Your Nomadic Happy Ending

In conclusion, digital nomadism offers a tantalizing blend of adventure and flexibility, and it truly is an achievement. It’s a pleasure, never to be taken for granted. It’s a privilege. It’s a dream come true. But it's not all coconut water and co-working spaces.

It's a lifestyle that demands adaptability, resilience, and, most importantly, a reliable internet connection. Once you’ve gone through your baptism of fire, and once you’ve made all the mistakes, learned, and grown from them, you’ll have graduated as an official digital nomad. Living with their parents and grandmother, these girls lead a nomadic life, moving with their cattle every six months. They travel hundreds of kilometers to build a new home from scratch, showcasing their distinct lifestyle.

Tell us…what was it about Mongolia that drew you in for a visit as a photographer?

Mongolia was on my travel list for a very long time because of its remoteness, its nature, and the fact that it's not widely known for any kind of tourism. I’ve only seen videos on the Discovery Channel and the internet and was intrigued by the eagle hunters and the vast landscapes. I have a deep love for mountains and wide, open spaces, more so than, for example, Playa del Carmen (a popular nomad hub in Mexico). Although the desire to visit Mongolia was strong, I didn’t have any plans to go. A few years after my curiosity was peaked, I came across the opportunity to

join the Nomad Train. I’d done an amazing Nomad Cruise which I’d really enjoyed, and the idea of doing something similar via train was like a dream come true. One of the journeys that they organized was a Trans Siberian Express trajectory that sounded incredible. I’d never been to that part of the world before.

The Nomad Train journey took us from Moscow to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Russia wasn't my primary focus, but it was part of the journey and my main goal was to reach Mongolia from there and explore the country.

Did you have any expectations before you went to Mongolia?

Expectations often lead to disappointments. So, I didn't have any.

I was aware that Mongolia was underdeveloped, with most of the activity centered in Ulaanbaatar, while the rest of the country was incredibly remote. Even a quick look at Google Maps reveals not much happening there, with hardly any proper roads. You need a 4x4 vehicle to travel, as a regular car won't get you far outside of Ulaanbaatar. My expectations were set quite low, and I wasn't seeking a comfortable trip.

How did you decide on the destinations outside of the main city? And how did you manage to reach the perfect wild photography spots?

Mongolia has some incredible highlights, and one of those is the Altai region in the northwest, known for its stunning mountains. That’s where I knew I wanted to head. I was fortunate that it had snowed just two days before I arrived, blanketing the majestic mountaintops.

This was perfect for photography, and luckily, the roads were still accessible. I also hit the Gobi Desert in the south. To get there, I experienced the most uncomfortable and longest drive of my life in a 4x4 with little suspension. Mongolia is a huge country, so you have to be prepared for lengthy journeys. That said, it was worth every mile.

We collaborated with a local travel agency. Around six days in the Altai region and three days in the Gobi desert. The agency then organized the itinerary, provided us with a vehicle and assigned a driver and a guide who also handled the cooking.

The cooking was relatively basic and consisted mainly of a vast array of homemade dairy products and meat from local Mongolian livestock. Being a vegetarian, I mainly stuck to rice and canned veggies.

How would you describe the people there?

I found Mongolian people to be incredibly friendly, especially in the rural areas. In Ulaanbaatar, people seemed a bit more reserved and easily annoyed, much like in many other big cities. However, in the rural regions outside of Ulaanbaatar, they have a strong sense of community and rely on each other for help because everything is extremely remote. This fosters warmth and welcoming attitudes. I usually stayed the night with local families in their yurts. These people are the real nomads traveling from place to place with their livestock. It was a very humbling experience and a fantastic way to witness their culture and hospitality. I encountered language barriers as I don't speak Mongolian, and the majority of the population outside Ulaanbaatar doesn’t speak English. Fortunately, our guide could communicate with them, and back to me in basic English, making it manageable. I also found that a friendly smile as a greeting goes a long way!

What advice would you give to one of our readers who feels inspired to visit Mongolia?

I'd suggest getting out of Ulaanbaatar as soon as possible. It's not the most appealing place, in my opinion. The city is polluted thanks to the giant coal power plant in the city, and it's exceedingly crowded. During winter, there's a smog problem due to the coal burning for heating from the many nomads that seek shelter and set up camp in the suburbs of the city as it’s just too cold to spend the winter in a remote area. I'd recommend spending a day or two in the city but then heading into nature as soon as possible, as that's where the real beauty lies. If I had to pick one place, I'd recommend visiting the Altai region in the northwest.

It’s simply stunning!

Is Mongolia an expensive destination to travel to?

I actually can't recall the exact costs. It's generally a little less expensive than booking a trip to a Western country or popular holiday destination. However, prices have increased since the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which many companies use as an excuse to raise their prices. Your expenses will depend on your budget, what you want to do, and the duration of your trip. I'd say that with around 125 euros a day, you can manage quite well on an organized trip.

Did you have reliable internet in the mountainous areas of Mongolia?

Well, that's a critical question for digital nomads, right? "What's the Wi-Fi password in the mountains?

How's the speed?" Haha! I did purchase a local SIM card, which worked in some villages but not so well in more remote areas. It's similar to Russia, where it works in cities but not in more remote locations. I do remember making a video call to my parents from a remote mountain top during an Eagle Festival. The connection was surprisingly good. So it can be a bit hit-and-miss, not suitable for an important business meeting, I guess. But for me it was actually quite nice to be disconnected most of the time and be fully immersed in the moment.

What did Mongolia teach you?

Above all else, Mongolia taught me about the pleasure to be found in simplicity. Humans don’t need much to be happy, really. As long as you have food to eat, clothes to wear, a roof over your head, nature to explore, and people to love, you’ve got a recipe for contentment. And I think realizing that fact leads to a lot of freedom.

Tijmen's advice To kickstart a career in event and travel photography (or any niche), focus on networking and showcasing your portfolio. This has always been my approach. If you're interested in working at a specific event or place, approach the relevant individuals, showcase your portfolio, and express your passion. For instance, when I aimed to work with Nomad Cruise, I approached Johannes (founder of Nomad Cruise), expressed my interest in being the photographer for the next cruise, showed him my portfolio, and that was it. Joining local online communities related to your area of interest is also beneficial.

Building connections and being proactive can open doors to opportunities.Your passion will radiate to your surroundings, the people you meet, and the universe in general!

Take photos of everything and strive for your 10,000 hours. Practice photography extensively.

You may have traveled to places teeming with tourists, backpackers, and nomads, pondering whether their presence was beneficial or detrimental to local communities. This was certainly the case for me more than a decade ago when I embarked on my Nomad journey, working from various locations around the world.

I observed so-called Digital Nomads occupying tables in restaurants for hours, sipping on a single soda and potentially preventing other customers from spending more. I noticed nomads acquiring cheap products without regard for the working conditions behind them, merely to sell them at a significant profit in their online shops.

Some Digital Nomads embarked on volunteer trips, inadvertently taking away jobs from locals without sharing their skills. There were instances of nomads capturing images of impoverished children and places solely for social media likes, disregarding the privacy and dignity of local communities. Moreover, some travelers showed a lack of respect for local etiquette, traditions, and customs.

This leads us to the question: Are Digital Nomads inherently problematic? Do they exhibit these behaviors intentionally due to self-centeredness, or are they simply unaware of the consequences or how to improve the way they show up in their countries of choice? In my opinion, often people act a certain way not out of ill intentions but due to a lack of education. Therefore, in this article, I'd like to focus on presenting four ways Digital Nomads can have a positive social impact on the communities they visit.

While traveling as a nomad, I strongly encourage supporting local economies and businesses. Opt for eating in restaurants owned by locals, booking tourist activities with local guides, and purchasing souvenirs from local markets. As a nomad who prefers to travel light, I add a unique touch to my outfits by buying accessories in the countries I visit. This simple practice transforms the look of my black dress each time I pair it with a different necklace, earrings, or a bag. Local communities often notice and appreciate when I wear accessories from their country, creating a positive exchange.

The positive impact of buying locally, and fairly, is evident from my own story. In 2009, I traveled to Uganda for my International Law Thesis, focusing on the legal protection of female child soldiers. It was there that I met Susan Laker, a kindhearted woman with a talent for creating beautiful jewelry. Illiterate and working in a stone quarry with her three children, Susan earned less than a dollar a day. However, due to certain illnesses that weakened her, Susan found a creative way to support her family beyond the quarry – she started crafting and selling jewelry made from recycled paper. Upon our initial meeting, Susan lived in a tiny one-room house with her three children, struggling to make ends meet. The jewelry she sold, which I ordered in bulk once a year to share with friends and family, brought about significant positive changes. Susan could afford a larger house, send her children to school, and even pursue her education. In 2012, I returned to Uganda to reconnect with Susan Laker and Aidah Wafula, the lady who translated our conversations for us. These two remarkable women remained a part of my life and became integral to my nomadic journey.

So please, make sure you’re not lining the thick pockets of rich Westerners in developing countries.

Make an effort to research local and family businesses and avoid Western chain supermarkets, cafés, and restaurants too. Try going to the markets, talking to the locals, and getting local recommendations from them. Remember, you vote with your money!

Now, an end note on haggling. Of course, you don’t want to get ‘ripped off,’ but try not to forcefully bang down the price to an unreasonably low cost for the seller. If you’d be happy paying the price in your country of origin, please be as generous as you can and pay a similar price in the country you’re visiting.

You’re probably still getting a huge bargain anyway.

Collaborating with local services, such as co-working spaces or printing services, not only fulfills your business needs but also contributes to the success of local enterprises. Actively engage with the local community by attending events, meetups, and networking sessions. Building connections can lead to collaborations, allowing you to discover ways to involve locals in your business or support their initiatives. Remember to approach these interactions with respect and a genuine interest in contributing positively to the local community.

Moreover, consider initiating skill development programs or workshops in collaboration with local educational institutions. Empowering local individuals with the skills necessary for remote work creates a potential talent pool for your business. Supporting local causes, either through direct donations, fundraising events, or dedicating a portion of your business profits, is another impactful way to give back. By actively participating in the local community, you not only enrich your nomadic experience but also leave a positive and lasting impact on the places you temporarily call home.

Connecting with local charities is an impactful way for nomads to contribute positively while traveling. A quick Google search can reveal a list of charities in the city or area you're staying in. Explore the options and identify a charity that aligns with your values. Reach out to them, and consider offering them your support. It can be with your money, but it doesn’t have to be. You could offer your skills for on-the-ground training, make product donations, provide visibility through your newsletter or social media platforms, or assist in other ways.

In my case, alongside my Ugandan partners, we established our foundation in Uganda, the 22STARS Foundation. Founded in 2017, our focus is on education, operating both in the Netherlands as a Public Benefit Institution for fundraising and in Uganda as a Community-Based Organization led by local members. Our holistic education program supports the entire community, emphasizing long-term self-sustainability. This includes school sponsorships for 500 children and a micro-credit and small business program for parents. What makes us unique is our hybrid approach, working both within Uganda and remotely.

Lastly, I'd like to offer some tips on being a responsible tourist and making a positive impact in the country you're visiting, especially when sharing your travel experiences on social media. Firstly, emphasize the positive aspects of the country, focusing on its food, nature, and cultural events to avoid perpetuating negative stereotypes. Consider the potential harm negative portrayals can have on the local tourist industry and the country's image.

Like we spoke about before, be sure to support local communities by shopping and buying from local businesses as well as booking tours with local operators. If you’re visiting an important monument, like famous Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, for example, consider employing one of the local guides on site to accompany you. This not only positively supports your guide, but you’ll have a golden opportunity to learn more about the culture you’re in. Also, take time to familiarize yourself with local customs, dress appropriately and respect local traditions. If in doubt, seek guidance from locals.

Another way you can leave behind a positive tourist footprint is by choosing eco-friendly products. Bottled water may well be a necesity, but make the effort afterwards to recycle the plastic. If you’re choosing between a bottle of soda and a fresh coconut (without a straw) on the side of the road, opt for the coconut. These small changes make a huge difference when it comes to plastic pollution. And in terms of transport, consider walking, biking, public transport or taxi sharing to limit your impact on the air quality in the local area.

Digital nomadism and travel could be much more positive for communities if only we took responsibility for the way we go about it. So get involved with the locals, be mindful of how you vote with your money, and leave as little polluted trace as possible. Your new countries of residence will thank you for it.

SCANDINAVIA (Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, Finns) DO NOT: DRESS TO IMPRESS To avoid sending your Scandinavian date running for the hills, steer clear of suggesting a fancy venue for your date that would require dressing up. Especially posh restaurants. In the world of the Scandis, low-key is the name of the game – the more laid-back and casual, the better.

Let’s face it; restaurant dates can be awkward for the best of us. But for a nation of introverts, the idea of sitting across from a stranger and trying to manufacture an entertaining exchange is just plain painful.

There’s something else you should know. If you’re into a typical ‘gentleman,’ you need to let that go.

Gender role expectations are seen as outdated over there, so don’t expect your Danish, Norwegian, or Finnish date to pick you up in a fancy car, book a high-end Italian joint, and fend off your attempts to pay by whipping out his American Express.

On the rare occasion that it does happen, there are a few possibilities: he’s either well-versed in the ways of international dating, or he’s expecting you to return the favor next time (i.e., you’ll be footing the bill for both of you). Most likely the latter. So to avoid looking stingy, make sure you take your credit card with you!

As for the Scandi woman?

While most would appreciate a gentleman, an excess of chivalry can start to feel uncomfortable. Independence is key for these ladies, and if you insist on picking up the extravagant tab, she might take it as though you’re forcing her into an unspoken debt – as in, she owes

you something more than gratitude (ahem).

Test it out: cover that hefty bill, and you can bet your Nordic date will either put up a fight or quickly settle the score by buying the next round of drinks.

Keep in mind that dining out in Scandinavia can also be wallet-walloping, so if your date happens in a more budget-friendly locale like Mexico City or Bali, the dynamic might shift. People abroad tend to be more flexible and relaxed compared to what they’re like on their home turf.

What’s more, the Scandis aren’t actually that big on traditional dating culture. People here tend to hang out, sleep together, and then somehow, after a whole lot of confusion, either fall into a relationship or call it a one-night stand and part ways.

So, if you’re still interested, what should you do on your first date? One word. One thousand possibilities. ACTIVITIES. Suggest an activity-based date. We’re talking a hike in the woods, minigolf, bowling, a cinema trip, or whatever is fun in the area. Scandis love it – it’s a relaxed, cheaper alternative to an awkward restaurant and fosters easier conversation. Or, stick with the classic drinks date, just as you would anywhere else in the world. For the gentlemen: offer to pay, but be prepared for your Nordic date’s insistence on splitting the bill or covering the next round. For the ladies: expect nothing (seriously) and be ready to handle your own expenses. Repeat after me: “I’m strong and independent, I’m strong and independent…”

First things first, Brazilian dating dynamics tend to be refreshingly straightforward. If you’ve ever lived in Brazil or dated a Brazilian, you’re well aware that Brazilian men are not ones to beat around the bush. They come on strong, showering compliments and affection without hesitation. If they find someone attractive, they simply say it, no need for any of that “hard to get” nonsense. It’s all about expressing desire openly.

Period.

Now, when it comes to dating a Brazilian woman, there’s no need to play the waiting game.You don’t have to hold off until the third date to kiss her. In Brazil, it’s all about seizing the moment, and reading those subtle cues. No more waiting until the end of the date, walking her home, and having that awkward conversation before you finally make your move. If the vibe is right, go for it. But remember, don’t jump to conclusions – feeling a connection doesn’t automatically translate to going home together.

On the flip side, if you’re dating a Brazilian man, here’s a golden rule: take his words with a pinch of salt.

He might proclaim you’re the most gorgeous woman he’s ever laid eyes on, express dreams of marrying you, having five children, meeting the extended family, and relocating to his hometown of Salvador for a life of daily churrascaria feasts and ocean skinny-dipping. Translation: he thinks you’re hot, and he’s into you (at least for tonight).

Oh, and by the way, while personal hygiene is a universal expectation, Brazilians take it up a notch.

They’re all about a minimum of two showers a day, and they’re no strangers to the razor blade. So if you’re heading to a date, don’t forget to “freshen up” beforehand.

The netherlands DO NOT: GET TOO ROMANTIC Ah, the Netherlands – the flatland of bicycles, home to some of the tallest people on the planet, and the origin of the famous "going Dutch" tradition (aka splitting the bill).

When it comes to navigating the Dutch dating scene, there's a crucial unspoken rule to remember: keep it low-key. Avoid going overboard with compliments, excessive romance, or pretty much anything that seems too extravagant – as you may be quickly judged as being "fake."

So, if you're from the US or Latin America, where expressions tend to be grandiose, and emotions are worn on sleeves, be prepared for your Dutch date to react differently. For instance, imagine meeting at a bar and absolutely adoring the place. You start gushing about it: "I love it! It's incredible. Don't you love it too?" Don't be taken aback if your date responds with a nonchalant "Yeah, it's alright." In the Netherlands, big words and extravagant expressions are reserved for truly exceptional, once-in-a-lifetime moments. Overusing them is often seen as insincere. Save it for the Taj Mahal.

As a man, it's essential to avoid coming on too strong or too quickly. While you might be used to expressing affection and showering women with compliments in your home country, most Dutch women won't respond well to it.

Of course, every woman appreciates feeling loved and desired, but go overboard, and you might become a cause for suspicion. As one of my Dutch friends put it when telling me all about her experience dating her Brazilian boyfriend: "When we first started dating, he'd call me 'amor' many times a day. It was nice, sure, but it also felt somewhat artificial. I mean, who calls someone 'love' repeatedly? I had to ask him to tone it down because it was just a bit too Much!”

�� JAPAN DO NOT: BE TOO HONEST OR SPONTANEOUS Let’s start with the fact that Japan is the most indirect and polite culture in the world (up there with the Brits).

For women, keep in mind that being too direct about your feelings or being generally outspoken and opinionated can be quite unsettling for Japanese men. If you openly voice your displeasure about something, it might come across as impolite and domineering.

As a man dating in Japan, you’ll need to master the art of reading cues. Your date may nod in agree-

Victoria Puzach and Ania Krol recently celebrated this significant milestone. They have both transformed what was once a dream into reality, travelling to numerous countries, going on wild adventures, and truly living their best lives. Both journeys fell into two years pre-Covid-19, two years during, and one year post. NGM asked them to share insights from their journey. As you’ll see, even a pandemic can't stop a true nomad.

Romantic Journeys and Entrepreneurial adventures A Conversation with Victoria Puzach In this insightful interview with Victoria, a seasoned digital nomad, and entrepreneur, we delve into her nomadic lifestyle, exploring how she and her partner, Alex, choose to travel the world as a couple, as well as hearing all about her transition from a corporate job at Mindvalley to venturing into entrepreneurship. From kitesurfing in Brazil to a road trip in Mexico to founding a successful marketing firm during the pandemic, Victoria shares memorable adventures that have shaped her nomadic journey.

How old were you when you first started your nomad journey?

I was in my mid-20s. It was that phase of life where you want to dive head-first into everything. Now, at 31, I'm more selective. That's the thing about your 30s – you have a better understanding of who you are, what you're after, and what you're not. You start to know yourself better. Instead of jumping into an 'all-you-can-eat' buffet of life, it becomes more about picking and choosing what truly matters to you.

What was your most memorable adventure? Something you'd tell your grandkids?

Good question! One unique experience was spending a month kitesurfing and quad biking in a tiny beach town called Jericoacoara in Brazil - there were no roads there, just sand! We spent a month there practically barefoot. I practiced kitesurfing, and we had a 4x4 quad bike for navigating the dunes and taking long rides along the ocean. It was the most unique place.

Another unforgettable adventure was a road trip during Covid in Baja California Sur. We rented a Jeep and drove all the way from the southern tip up to the Tijuana border, stopping in small villages to experience Mexico from a raw, local perspective. Despite speaking zero Spanish back then, we managed to connect with a lot of amazing people. That trip changed my perception of Mexico—it's not the dangerous place people often think. It's incredibly warm and welcoming.

But as with other places, you need to follow common sense and exercise precautions because crimes happen everywhere.

How do you and Alex choose your travel destinations as a couple?

Right from the start of our travels together, we naturally leaned into 66 Nomad Gossip Magazine

places centred around nature, the ocean, and kitesurfing—those were the spots we absolutely loved spending long stretches of time in (my partner Alex was already a kitesurfer, and I had enrolled in a kitesurfing school before we got together).

When we became nomads, we asked ourselves a strategic question: "What place would suit us for a month or two, or even three?" We wanted our destinations to be by the ocean with good wind conditions for kitesurfing, with reliable internet, and a nice community.

However, only a few places worldwide meet all of these criteria. As the seasons shift, we explore our potential locations. In February, for instance, we went to Medellin due to its reputation as a nomad hotspot in Colombia, and also to enjoy a city vibe. It can be challenging to spend time in a big city without knowing anyone, so in urban environments like this, we usually search for a co-living experience.

In Medellin we actually hosted our own coliving experience - we rented a huge villa near the famous nomadic area Poblado, hired a house assistant, chef and set a productivity theme for one month where all the 16 participants were working to progress on their projects. It was awesome for productivity as we were always keeping each other accountable. We went on to host different social events during that month in our villa including the launch of Nomads Giving Back with Tarek Kholoussy.

How did you and your partner Alex first meet?

We initially met at Mindvalley where I used to work. He was a participant at Mindvalley University, and I was among the organisers.

Our paths first crossed at events in Barcelona and Jamaica, but nothing happened until the third meeting, a year later at Mindvalley University in Tallinn. He asked me out, and things started to evolve from there.

After two fulfilling years of nomadic living while working for Mindvalley, I found myself ready for something different. That eventually led me to venture into the world of entrepreneurship.

Tell us your secret for how to make relationships work based on your experience over the past five years as a digital nomad and an entrepreneur.

It's been a blend of tears, laughter, effort, and everything in between. I consider my relationship with Alex my primary vehicle for personal growth after my time at Mindvalley.

It's taught me so much about myself.

There were tough times when we questioned our life together, considering if it would ever work.

What helped was our honesty and openness right from the start about our long-term aspirations, like whether we wanted kids or not. We 67

Can you recall when the shift happened from being an employee at Mindvalley to launching your own business?

Around year two of our journey, I felt stuck in my role and knew I needed a change. So, I took a leap of faith and quit Mindvalley to pursue my own venture - but without a solid plan in place! It was a time of self-discovery, allowing myself to take a break. Luckily, I had some savings to fall back on, which eased the transition for both of us as a couple.

Then, during the pandemic when everything came to a standstill, I had this idea for the Work Travel Summit. The idea was to gather experienced and aspired nomads who were learning how to navigate the reality of the workplace and life during the pandemic for a four-day event. I wanted to facilitate insightful discussions about their journeys and experiences during this global transition to the ‘new normal.’

I consider this relationship with Alex my primary vehicle for personal growth

aimed to address these big questions early on, knowing it wasn't just a passing fling, and we were willing to explore and align our visions. It was different for me to have these conversations so early in a relationship. But for the relationship to thrive, I felt it was vital to commit to working on myself, diving into and understanding triggers and emotions, and facing challenges openly and thoughtfully.

After a few trips together, it was clear that we were right for each other, and that our visions aligned—we both aspire to have kids, travel, and pursue entrepreneurship. He had entrepreneurial experience, while I was still in my career at Mindvalley at the time, but I sought a change, and he supported me in that transition.

Was that your first entrepreneurial venture, your initial independent project?

Absolutely, it was the first, and a really cool one at that. I've organised events before, but this was different in terms of being entirely responsible for everything. It was overwhelming, more than I had expected. But it was incredible.We got 90 speakers to share their unique life journeys of working and building companies remotely, and we secured sponsors for the event who believed in us. It went very well, but it also felt like a one-off experience, so I was still looking for something else.

What led you to start your marketing firm?

I had experience in growth marketing at Mindvalley and started receiving requests for help with course promotion, branding, website setups, and funnels. My strength lies

in marketing, and team operations, along with an extensive background in educational tech. I recognised a gap in the market where I could assist educational institutions, businesses, and individual experts. So, I gathered a team and began working with incoming clients, and that's how the agency came to life.

So, in essence, even without a solid action plan, opportunities started coming your way.

Yes, I was very fortunate! I had been pressuring myself to find that one big idea to work on. I dabbled with various ideas and prototypes, but none took off. When those ad hoc requests came in, I realised that my expertise resided in marketing.

I was trying to venture into something new without leveraging my existing skill set. When someone shed light on my capabilities, asking for help, I realised that I could support not only them but others too.

Can you tell me about the toughest moment over the last five years?

One of the biggest challenges was when I had to undergo knee surgery after an injury, which led to months of uncertainty and a loss of control. It does, however, make for a lighter anecdote amidst the tough times: I landed in Portugal a couple of weeks before Web Summit, during which time Alex and I had planned short solo trips. Sometimes, a bit of alone time recalibrates things, right? So, I ventured to Santa Cruz to spend time with a surfing friend, while Alex explored the south. During a surfing class, a seemingly perfect wave and rain led to a knee twist. Initially, I thought it wasn't serious. However, my knee didn't improve, and I really struggled with driving back to Lisbon.

Eventually, I had to go to hospital, and ended up needing surgery during the start of the Web Summit.

So, instead of attending the event,

I was navigating hospital appointments and ended up attending only one day of the Summit, in a wheelchair! That experience gave me a newfound empathy for people with disabilities. The surgery itself wasn't too bad, but the recovery phase over the next year was undoubtedly the most challenging part. Fortunately, though, it was only temporary.

Did you have insurance?

Yes, I've had insurance with Safety Wing since we began travelling. It did offer assistance, but I'm now contemplating switching to a different insurance provider. Safety Wing operates on a reimbursement basis, so I had to cover all medical expenses upfront—surgery, recovery, you name it—and only later submit for a refund. The refund process took around six months to complete, and it wasn't a complete reimbursement due to exchange rate fluctuations. All in all, it probably covered about 80% of my medical costs and none of the inconvenience, new flights, extended accommodation, car, or missing another planned international event. Regardless of how fit and healthy you may feel, it's an essential safety net. It is also important to remember that being nomadic always bears an extra financial risk one way or another that insurance won't cover and be ok with that.

Now, we prefer to spend three to four months in one spot to gain a deeper understanding and connection with the place.

Personally, my focus has shifted significantly towards business, creation, and contribution. It’s less about consumption and more about what I'm creating for myself, my team, and the world. I now seek fulfilment through giving rather than merely experiencing.

As nomads, our desires and perspectives evolve over time. What were your initial priorities as a digital nomad, either individually or as a couple, and how have they shifted today?

Initially, I was seeking new experiences—new cultures, languages, cuisines—you name it. I was driven by an endless pursuit of dopamine.

We changed countries monthly, following a hectic schedule. In our first year, we zipped through 12 or 13, maybe 15 countries—it was wild.

Looking back, it feels too fast now.

"I used to be a control freak, afraid that nothing interesting would happen. I worried that travel plans wouldn't be well-made or that I wouldn't find a good place. I was proven wrong.”

Over the last five years, Ania visited (more than once in some cases) Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Patagonia, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Croatia, and South Africa.

How did you choose your travel destinations?

Initially, I wanted to go solo to South America, but I wasn’t sure where to start. Luckily, Nomad Cruise ended up making the decision for me - they were sailing to Brazil, so I signed up to join them.

The next destinations were based on recommendations from Nomad Cruisers, who were more experienced than I was in travelling in South America. They suggested a couple of spots, including Buenos Aires in Argentina, which ended up being my second destination. Many nomads were going there after the cruise, so I went with them.

From there, a friend recommended a healer in Peru, where I ended up travelling for two days into the heart of the jungle for an ayahuasca ceremony. It was the most profound and life changing experience.

During the summer, I always visit my home country Poland and take the opportunity to visit my non-nomadic friends around Europe, in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Europe also has a great selection of summer festivals, so I normally stick around there until October.

My travel choices are also often based on the communities connected to spiritual practices and tantra. For instance, I visited Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, a small spiritual community full of hippies, workshops, and spiritual experi72 Nomad Gossip Magazine

Travelling, especially alone, accelerates self-discovery, teaching you independence and interdependence. You learn not only to make independent decisions but also when to ask for help when needed. ences , from yoga to tantra to plant medicine to ayahuasca, etc. I also spent some time in Ubud, Bali, another spiritual community hub.

Pandemic times

During the Covid-19 pandemic, my travel choices were generally made based on the level of freedom available in different countries. At the time of the initial outbreak, I was in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. After a few months, myself and my partner at the time managed to travel to Lisbon. It was great to spend a couple of months there, enjoying the quietness of a city that is usually bustling with tourists and nomads. Great, that is, until they announced a 1pm curfew on the weekends! At that point, we decided to move to Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. My partner decided to create a “remote worker” community via Slack, which I helped to develop, and now has a couple of thousand members. So many people were coming from Europe and working remotely, but they were alone, so we wanted to help them start socialising. The Canary Islands didn't have strict rules, so we were able to create events and meet people. I felt it was the best place to be during that time.

When the borders reopened, I went to spend a few months at home in Poland, to reconnect with my family. Even though I have this

flexibility and am discovering the world, I also have a loving family that I want to spend time with you can't take that for granted.

When I started getting itchy feet again, I decided to travel back to Mexico in January 2022 for the Nomadbase conference. This was an amazing opportunity for me to return to a nice, familiar place, and reconnect with old friends after Covid.

After that, I moved to Guatemala to live in a spiritual community for a few months, and then moved on to another nomad hub in Croatia.

Go with the flow

In 2022, I decided to let go of my need for control and embrace spontaneity. It was a year of exploration and trying new things. I used to be a control freak, afraid that nothing interesting would happen.

It all started with a friend who invited me to join a van trip to Montenegro. Although I was initially hesitant due to my need for personal space and a good internet connection for work, I decided to take a chance. It turned out to be an amazing experience, living in a basic van setup with two new friends.

This new open-mindedness led me to attend a tantric festival in Israel and a workshop in Gozo, deepening my practice of tantra and spirituality, and I went on 73

to attend various festivals where I could express myself through dancing, singing, and connecting with like-minded people.

I also fell in love with van life and joined a group exploring European cities by van, connecting with spiritual communities, and attending various events. Taking a month off work for this was a big decision for a self-employed person, but it allowed me to disconnect from my computer and recharge.

These experiences in 2022 refreshed me, which in turn invigorated my work and outlook. Later on, I ventured to South Africa for another Nomadbase event.

Being a digital nomad is a fundamental part of my personality.

Was the past five years a journey of personal development for you, and do you believe it would have been possible without becoming a nomad?

It was indeed a journey of personal development. Travelling, especially alone, accelerates self-discovery, teaching you independence and interdependence. You learn not only to make independent decisions but also when to ask for help when needed. Travelling broadens your perspective and exposes you to different ways of life through conversations with others. While personal and spiritual growth can happen at one's own pace, being a digital nomad accelerates the experience.

through travel than by staying in one place. These past five years have been a significant adventure with numerous challenges, but all in all I find myself the happiest and healthiest I have ever been, here in Malaga.

Do you consider the digital nomad lifestyle to be just a phase of your life, or do you anticipate it becoming a more permanent part of your future?

At the moment, I have a home base, but I can't deny that being a digital nomad is a fundamental part of my personality. Travelling is constantly on my mind, and I find myself on the move at least once a month. So, it's safe to say that I see myself continuing to travel for the foreseeable future.

What differences can you see between your past self and who you are today?

Back then, I was more inclined to seek instant gratification. I used to be someone who wanted to do and experience everything, joining every activity and opportunity. As a nomadic adventurer, you always want to be able to take risks.

Confidently. To achieve this peace of mind it's crucial to understand some fundamentals of insurance in general and the landscape of options for nomads and remote workers in particular.

1. You can’t insure a burning house Providers of insurance coverage look into the statistical distribution of risks in large and random groups.

Based on that they calculate the standard premiums for every individual to be able to grant coverage for uncertainties.

As soon as a risk is certain it can’t get covered anymore. More illustrative.You can’t insure a burning house.

Medical insurance is calculated for a random pool of healthy people, based on age groups to accommodate for the increase of health risks with growing older (statistically around 50% of any life’s medical costs occur in the last two years of a life span).

For an insurance provider to be able to buy into a person’s medical risk they need to exclude all pre-existing auditions or perform a risk assessment based on the medical history. 2. If you say “adieu” to your country of residence, you might lose out on free healthcare

Many developed countries provide a state-run and solidarity-based health insurance and social security system. These systems are made to override the rules of the market. As in, they execute the political will to provide care to those who could not get coverage following the principles of the private market. For that (more or less) everyone within the territory of that state is forced to contribute – usually a percentage of their income. This way individuals with chronic diseases or other severe pre-existing conditions get medical care. But they are in return bound to the textural scope of this system.

That said, there are two very different systems in place in the countries that have implemented a national social security system. On one side we have the Bismarck system in countries like Spain, Italy, or the UK with its infamous NHS, where the funding comes from the general state budget. Here citizens are in general entitled to “free” health care – including non-residents who return. The Bismarck model on the other side – implemented in France, Austria, Germany, and Estonia for example – requires individual contribution. A citizen who returns back for treatment can not expect free access to the health care system. In the case of Germany, it is literally illegal for providers of the health care fund to grant coverage.

The hard truth

If you decide the freedom of a nomadic lifestyle is for you and sign out of any state system then you need to plan well and ideally design your entire tax and business setup together with your long-term health insurance strategy. In the long run, the statistical odds are against you, and with a healthy lifestyle at a young age you cannot outsmart the medical risks of your later life.

3. Health insurance and travel insurance are VERY different

There are three important differences between travel and health insurance:

A. Duration

Travel insurance always has a limited duration; covering you for as little as a weekend up to two years max.

In some rare jurisdictions, there are travel insurance plans for up to 5 years available. Health insurance, on the other hand, does not have any limit. As long as you pay the monthly premiums, the health insurance will go to the very end with you.

B. Pre-existing and chronic conditions

Travel insurance is made to cover emergencies that happen while you are on the go. Thus anything pre-existing is excluded from coverage – and this also applies to any ongoing medication, planned treatments, and (in most cases) maternity.

Health insurance, on the other hand, is made to cover all your medical risks that occur after the inception of the contract – and some conditions from before. Therefore there is a medical underwriting that looks into your medical history and puts a price tag on elevated risk.

‘Global health insurance’ will cover you wherever you are. But repatriation is usually not part of the benefits as you will be treated where it makes medical sense.

And if that’s not the current place then you’d be transferred to the next city or country with decent facilities.

As a rule of thumb, anything that costs less than 100 bucks (Dollars, Euros, Pounds) a month can’t be health insurance. It’s most probably just a glorified long-term travel insurance that will require full health insurance back home anyway.

The hard truth

As seen with many unwitting nomads: if you only have travel insurance and no underlying comprehensive health insurance back in your home country then this travel insurance is pointless. It only pays for the minor emergency treatments that you could cover out of your own pocket anyway. In severe cases, the best it would do is repatriate you back to your country (where you may have no coverage anyway.) The bottom line is; get yourself both sturdy travel insurance as well as pay-monthly health insurance (or eligibility through residency/citizenship in a country that provides free healthcare).

C. Repatriation

Here’s the most important part: travel insurance only covers minor emergency treatments at your travel destination. Everything that requires serious medical attention will lead to you getting sent back (repatriation) for treatment in your home country – which, unfortunately, is outside of the scope and responsibility of the travel insurance. That’s why travel insurance always requires a top-up comprehensive health insurance back home!

4. as a DN, you’re vulnerable to insurance scams

Basically, insurance and casinos are the same: in both cases, a large number of people pay a small amount of money towards the unlikely outcome of an event. In the casino, everyone bets for the jackpot, and in insurance, everybody bets against an (unfortunate) event that hopefully never happens. That’s why both industries are regulated very similarly: in both cases meddling with the probabilities has a massive positive effect for the provider and a negative effect which is very hard to measure for the individual consumer.

So in the same way you would never go into an illegal casino with forged slot machines you should never go in blindly to any insurance.

Insurance distribution requires licensing and supervision for good reasons. So if you ever assess an insurance proposal and you don’t understand the answers to all of the following questions within a few minutes, then it’s not because you are too stupid to read the documents, rather, it’s because the provider is actively hiding information. They may not have any answers to your questions at all. Every legit insurance intermediary or provider must be absolutely transparent about: Who – which company – is actually my contractual partner? Where are they registered and which individuals are their legal representatives?

What’s the complaints process and which one is the supervision authority for escalation?

Which country’s law is governing my contract and at which court would we meet in case of a dispute?

If you are not comfortable with your findings: run for the hills!

What’s right for you?

The right solution for yourself depends on a variety of factors. Start by answering this question: Are you signing off from your home country? (As in, will you lose your health care benefits if you become a DN? And from there: • For how long do you plan to discover the world?

• What is your nationality?

• What regions of this globe intrigue you most?

• Do you want to start a family?

• Are you healthy and does your BMI fit within the normal range?

• Do you have the budget for a long-term solution that keeps all your healthcare options open?

Keep in mind: Over time, the odds are against you. If you buy into a cheap intermediate solution today, the long-term proper solution might not be available for you anymore once you have developed medical conditions.

Bear in mind that more and more new products tailored for nomads are coming. So a bonus tip would be if you have your business incorporated in Europe: sign up your company to global health insurance (e.g. at covrd.ee) to cover yourself as well as your family and/ or your team, as a business expense.

And if you were wondering why this article didn’t cover your ‘stuff,’ like your laptop or lost luggage: We strongly believe that insurance only makes sense to cover existential risks. If losing your luggage or getting your computer stolen imposes an existential risk for you then you should invest the energy rather into improving your business model than paying for an overly expensive insurance that probably won’t cover you anyway.

The final hard truth

Making an educated purchase decision is something you should allocate enough time to. Make sure you understand all the consequences of your decision, and never be tempted to buy directly from any insurance company! Get yourself in contact with an expert broker who can help you navigate the jungle and who will also legally show up to support you as your attorneys during the entire contract duration. They will help you to enforce claims and they’ll have your back when the insurance companies inevitably try to wriggle out of your claim. What’s more, brokers will usually have access to better rates and conditions than the individual.

The conversation doesn’t cost you anything, but will for sure open your eyes to new aspects.

Then you can take risks. Confidently.
