Reading to Thor at the Hubbell Library

MEE T THOR

A Therapy Dog with a Literary Mission For the past two years, 8-year-old Noah and his mom, Sabrina, have gone to Hubbell Library almost every Monday afternoon to see Thor — a 7-year-old, 107-pound licensed therapy dog who is specially trained to help young readers learn new skills and improve their confidence in a safe, comfortable space. Thor’s been working as a therapy dog for three years now, according to his handler, Pam. In addition to libraries, Pam said she takes Thor to nursing homes and hospitals, where he’s just as loved by residents and patients there as he is by Noah and Sabrina.

“Thor is really so in tune to people and their feelings and it’s obvious he just wants to make people happy. He loves everybody, whether they’re a baby or 100 years old.”

“I love doing this work,” Pam said. “Thor is really so in tune to people and their feelings and it’s obvious he just wants to make people happy. He loves everybody, whether they’re a baby or 100 years old.” Pam said Thor’s calm and friendly demeanor helps bring young or struggling readers out of their shells. After all, she said, “Who’s going to feel judged by a dog?” While Sabrina said Noah did not have difficulties learning to read, she’s noticed a big improvement in his confidence, dictation, and expressiveness since he’s been reading aloud to Thor. “It’s just such a great program,” Sabrina said. “Noah’s always loved to read, so that hasn’t really been an issue with us, but I do see improvements, especially in his oral expression. For example, before, he might have read every sentence in the same voice, regardless of punctuation. But now, it’s really like he knows he’s telling a story. So, if there’s an exclamation

point at the end of a sentence, or a question mark, you can actually hear it in his voice. It’s fantastic.” With a minor allergy to dogs, Noah isn’t allowed to have one of his own. But, Sabrina said Thor’s never given him any trouble, which is just another reason they love the program.

"I can’t have a dog at home, but it’s OK. Thor’s the best and he’s my friend.” “I love when Thor’s here because he’s really nice and soft, and he lets me pet him and make him do tricks,” Noah said, feeding Thor a treat after he shook Noah’s hand. “I can’t have a dog at home, but it’s OK. Thor’s the best and he’s my friend.” Reading to Thor is held every Monday at Hubbell Library from 4pm to 5pm and every Thursday at Algiers Regional Library from 5pm to 6pm.

THE SPY WHO READ ME: MISSION SUCCESSFUL More than 250 guests were treated to an exciting evening of spy-themed fun Saturday, November 9, at the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library’s fundraising event, The Spy Who Read Me. Held after hours at the Main Library, guests participated in a unique 007-themed scavenger hunt throughout the stacks; sipped the event’s signature cocktail, “The Vesper;” and enjoyed live music, food from popular local restaurants, a silent auction, and more. All proceeds from the event will fund the Library’s Summer Fun program, one of our most popular and well-attended programs. Louise Saenz, development director for the Friends, said the event was a huge success and marked the first of what is sure to become a highly anticipated annual event. The Library would like to extend a huge “thank you” to the Friends for creating such a special evening and to all of the event’s sponsors and donors.

Early each summer, teens come to the Library and ask, “Where can I get a job?” but applications are often due in the spring and teens miss their window of opportunity. Last spring, the Library connected teens and businesses through the Summer Internship & Job Fair held at the Main Library. This March, in addition to the job fair, we will create a summer internship and job website for teens. If you work for a business or organization that would like to hire a teen this summer, email M'issa Fleming at mfleming@nolalibrary.org.
