The Elgin AC baseball team finished 4th in the state! The team sure did gel the summer of 1982. Coach Ron Lange had no idea his team would go (28-15) on the year. The team finished (16-10) in the league and were the District champs with a record of (4-0).
Some baseball teams have trouble finding one or two strong starting pitchers.
But the Roth’s Surgical Athletic Club team–Elgin’s entry in the Northern Illinois Thorobred (19-21 division) league had no problems.
The staff included Mike Scheffler from Streamwood (Judson College) who led the team with an 8-2 record, 68-IP, 69-SO, 2.06-ERA and pitched two shutouts. Scott Meyer from Dundee (ECC/ISU) had a 4-6 record and pitched two shutouts. Joe Brumley from Streamwood went 4-1 Dan Crinigan LHP from Elgin went 4-1 and pitched one shutout. Other pitchers on the team were Mark Iden (Judson), Dave Kolosowski from Streamwood, Kurt Schuring from Dundee who went 2-2, and Frank Sierawski from Streamwood.
The team had a potent offense to go with a strong defense.
The infield featured C Mark DeMien from Dundee (Judson) who hit 6 home runs, C Jerry Smith from Dundee (Judson), 1B Scott Karsten from Elgin (ECC/LCC) who hit 6 home runs, 2B Tim Peabody from Dundee hit 3 home runs, 2B Pat Hickey from Streamwood, SS Gary Loftgren from Elgin (Carthage), 3B Scott McLean from Elgin (Milton College), 3B Al Smith from Streamwood (Judson), and INF Jim Dinkheller from Elgin (ECC).
The outfield featured CF Victor Bills from Elgin (Illinois) who hit 8 home runs, Bills was Elgin’s top hitter hitting over .500 as of July 12th. RF Tim Rooney from Streamwood (Judson), OF Al Kurilla from Bartlett (ECC), and OF Cory Toppel from Elgin (ECC).
The team finished 3rd in the annual Rockton Invitational Semi-Pro Baseball Tournament. They won three of five games in the tourney including Scott Meyer’s five-inning perfect game in an 11-0 win over Latin American All-Stars. Meyer fanned 10! Elgin bowed to the Rockton Blackhawks 2-1. Mike Scheffler was the hard-luck loser. Scheffler fanned 10 and allowed only four hits in seven innings of work. For the tourney, Victor Bills was 7-for-15, Scott Karsten was 6-for-13 and Mark DeMien was 5-for-9
The Elgin AC were the District champs with a record of (4-0) giving them a trip to the State Tournament in Elmhurst. In the first game, Scott Meyer pitched a complete game 8-3 victory against Westchester. Hitting Stars – HR Kurilla, Karsten and J Smith 2-for-2, 2-RBI In the second game, Mike Scheffler hurled a three-hit shutout as the Elgin AC stunned Arlington Heights 2-0 to remain undefeated in the Thorobred Division Tournament. Hitting Stars – RBI Karsten, McLean. In the third game, Joe Brumley pitched a complete game 12-9 victory against the Chicago Panthers. Hitting Stars – Peabody HR, 4-for-4, RBI Peabody 4, Karsten 2, Rooney 2, Loftgren, DeMien In the championship game, Elgin defeated Arlington Heights 9-4 behind the clutch pitching of Mike Scheffler Hitting Stars – McLean 2-for-4, 2B Karsten, J Smith, Peabody. RBI J. Smith 3, Karsten 2, DeMien, Rooney, Peabody.
The State Tournament Teams were the Elgin AC, Elmhurst, Bloomington Bobcats, and the Springfield Rifles. The Elgin AC bowed out of the State Tournament by losing 5-1 in the first game against the Bloomington Bobcats. Elgin lost the second game 3-2 to Elmhurst giving them a 4th place finish.

Elgin AC takes two in league
PALATINE – The Elgin AC, behind the stingy pitching of Scott Meyer and Mark Iden and a balanced hitting attack, ripped Palatine twice Saturday 6-0 and 12-1 to sweep a Northern Illinois League doubleheader here.
Meyer threw no-hit ball for 4-1/2 innings in the opener before yielding a single. Elgin took a 2-0 lead in the second on Kurt Shuring’s tworun single and increased it to 4-0 in the fifth on Victor Bills two-run home run, his second of the year. Meyer struck out seven, walked five and allowed only two hits.
In the slaughter-rule shortened nightcap, Iden was nicked for only two hits as Elgin jumped on two Palatine hurlers for nine hits including four doubles. Elgin erupted for six runs in the second, all after two were out, to take command. Keying the inning were two-run doubles by Al Kurilla and Scott McLean and RBI singles by Gary Lofgren and Jerry Smith. A two-out Palatine error opened the flood gates.
Elgin now 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the league, travels to Hanover Park today for another league doubleheader.
Elgin AC splits against Hanover Park
HANOVER PARK – The Elgin AC saw its spotless Northern Illinois Thorobred record tarnished Monday in a doubleheader split against Hanover Park.
Elgin won the first game 6-2 behind the four-hit pitching of Kurt Shuring, but dropped the nightcap 9-7 when it couldn’t hold off a late Hanover Park rally.
Schuring (1-0) got help from his battery mates to shut down Hanover Park in the first game. Catchers Jerry Smith and Mark DeMien had two hits apiece. Gary Lofgren had two RBI for Elgin.
After Hanover Park scored twice in the first inning, Elgin took the lead with a four-run fourth.
Joe Kowalski homered for Hanover Park.
In the second game, Elgin rallied from a 5-1 deficit with six runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead, but the host battered three Elgin pitchers in the bottom half of the inning for four runs and the victory.
Hanover Park scored twice in each of the second and third innings.
Schuring and Al Smith had two-run homers for Elgin. Lofgren belted a solo shot. Scott Karsten was 3for-4 for Elgin.
Elgin (6-1, 4-1) hosts Glen Ellyn in a 7:30 p.m. single game at Wing Park Wednesday.
DeMien, Bills spark Elgin AC
Mark DeMien hit a three-run homer and Victor Bill’s added a two-run shot to power the Elgin AC past Glen Ellyn 8-3 Wednesday in a Northern Illinois Thororbred League game at Wing Park in Elgin.
With the win, the AC is now 5-1 in the league, which is for players ages 19-21. Arlington Heights was undefeated in conference play through Sunday.
Winning pitcher Mike Scheffler (3-0) tossed a four-hitter and fanned 14 in seven innings of work. Bill’s homer-his third of the season broke a 2-2 tie in the second, and DeMien’s shot keyed a four-run outburst that settled the issue in the fifth.
The AC returns to action at Wing Park at 7:30 pm Friday in a non-conference game against a team from Chicago.

Five-homer barrage powers Elgin AC past Chicago Cougars for eighth win
Gary Lofgren, Mike Ross, Scott Karsten, Al Kurilla and Tim Peabody hit home runs to power the Elgin Athletic Club past the Chicago Cougars in non-conference baseball action Sunday at the Thorobred (19-21) level.
The AC is now 8-3 on the season going into today’s Northern Illinois Thorobred league game at Elmhurst. The AC is 5-3 in the league.
Dan Crinigan was the winning pitcher, improving to 2-1 on the season.
Scott McLean had three of Elgin’s ten hits in the game, while Lofgren and Peabody had two hit’s each.
Lofgren, Ross, Karsten, Kurilla and Pat Hickey each had a pair of RBI.
The AC led only 1-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, but broke it open with a three-run rally.
The margin ballooned to 8-0 before Crinigan tired in the late innings.
Elgin AC splits with Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights – Despite out hitting host Arlington Heights 22-7 for the day, the Elgin AC could manage only a split of a Northern Illinois Thorobred League doubleheader Saturday, losing the first game 7-5 before taking the nightcap 6-1.
In the opener, Elgin out hit Arlington 10-5 but needed to rally twice in the late innings before losing the contest on a one-out tworun seventh inning home run.
In the nightcap, Mike Scheffler (4-0) hurled a two-hitter as Elgin rapped Arlington pitching for 12 hits, all singles. Scheffler allowed first-inning and seventh inning singles.

Elgin AC rips Palatine twice
The Elgin AC won three of four games over the weekend, splitting a Northern Illinois Thorobred League doubleheader with Elmhurst losing 2-1 before taking the nightcap 5-4.
Monday Elgin pounded lumps on Palatine in another NITL twin-bill, 19-0 and 11-0.
Hapless Palatine was little match for the AC Monday.
Mike Scheffler hurled a one-hit shutout in the opener to gain his fifth victory against no defeats. Scheffler pitched no-hit ball for 4-2/3 innings before yielding a bloop single to center.
Scott Karsten led the parade with three hits including his second and third home runs of the year and 4 RBI. Al Kurilla, Tim Rooney, Victor Bills and Jerry Smith also had home runs. Bills and Smith drove in three runs each.
In the nightcap five Elgin Players had two hits, McLean 2-for-3, Karsten 2-for-3, Shurring 2-for3, Iden 2-for-3, Toppel 2-for-3 as Dan Crinigan threw a one-hitter.
Elgin AC third in Rockton Tournament Meyer tosses five inning perfect game
Rockford – The Elgin AC men's (ages 19-21) baseball team finished third in the annual Rockton Invitational Semi-Pro Baseball Tournament played over the weekend.
The AC won three of the five games in the tourney including Scott Meyer's five-inning perfect game in an 11-0 win over Latin American All-Stars.
Other wins were over the Quad-Cities Crazy Tops 3-1 and the Quad-Cities 76ers 7-6.
Elgin bowed to the Rockton Blackhawks 2-1. Mike Scheffler (51) was the hard luck loser. Scheffler fanned 10 and allowed four hits in seven innings of work. Rockton scored the winning run in the seventh on an error. The other lose was to Madison (Wis.) Avenue Bar 13-3.
Meyer fanned 10 against the Latin American All-Stars and was backed on offense by Victor Bills. Bills went 2-for-3 with 3-RBI.
Al Kurilla added two RBI and Gary Loftgren had two hits. In the come from behind win over the 76ers Tim Rooney's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh pulled the game out. Bills also homered in the game. Kurt Schuring, Bills and Rooney each had two hits. Tim Peabody had two-run double.
Frank Sierawski hurled a three-hitter in the win over the Crazy tops. Scott McLean had two hits and Rooney, Scott Karsten and Pat Hickey had RBI. Elgin scored once in the first, twice in the second and let Sierawski do the rest.
For the tourney, Bills had seven hits in 15 at bats. Karsten was 6-for-13 and Mark DeMien was 5-for-9.
Elgin, 17-11 overall, returns to action Friday against Arlington Heights. The game starts at 7:30 pm at Wing Park in Elgin. The AC is 9-9 in Northern Illinois Thorobred League play.

Bills leads AC sweep -The Elgin AC swept a doubleheader from the Chicago Panthers, 16-5 and 106, Sunday in Northern Illinois Thorobred league (ages 19-21) play.
The pair of wins moves the AC to 14-9 in the league and 22-11 overall.
Center fielder Victor Bills led the way in both games. In the opener, he hit his eighth home run of the season and went 4-for-5. Mike Scheffler (6-1) scattered seven hits in seven innings of work. In the nightcap Bill's had two more hits and a pair of RBI.
Bill's who will be a sophomore at the University of Illinois next month is hitting over .500 for the AC.
Crinigan, DeMien lead Elgin AC’s 12-2 romp
WESTCHESTER – Elgin AC’s battery of Dan Crinigan and Mark DeMien teamed up for most of the heroics
Monday night as coach Ron Lange’s team blasted host Westchester 12-2 in the Northern Illinois Thorobred League.
Crinigan allowed just four hits to pick up his fourth win against just one loss, and DeMien had a perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI.
Scott Karsten added a triple and two RBI and Pat Hickey and Tim Rooney had two hits and drove in one run apiece. Al Kurilla had the other Elgin RBI.
Elgin, now 15-9 in the league and 2311 overall, hosts Sycamore at Wing Park Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Four-run rally lifts Sycamore past Elgin AC
Sycamore shelled reliever Scott McLean for four runs in the top of the seventh to jolt the Elgin AC 7-4 Thursday night in a nonconference game between two 19-21 age group baseball teams.
The loss drops the AC down to 23-11 overall, but it is still 15-9 in the Northern Illinois Thorobred League.
Elgin hosts league-leader Arlington Heights tonight at 7:30 at Wing Park.
Curt Shurring pitched the first five innings for Elgin Thursday, and yielded to Scott Meyer in the sixth. McLean came on to start the seventh, but was ineffective.
McLean did hit his first homer of the season, while teammate Mark DeMien added two hits.
Elgin will begin tournament play a week from Sunday. The first level of play in the national Thororbred tournament will be the league tourney.
Elgin AC splits with Moraine Valley
Scott Karsten hit two solo homers and Scott Meyer fanned nine Moraine Valley batters in a losing effort in the opener, but Elgin AC (16-10, 24-13) rebounded with a three run fifth inning in the nightcap to salvage a split in its doubleheader in the second game, Elgin loaded the bases in the fifth before Karsten drew a walk to force in a run. Tim Rooney followed with a fielder’s choice to score another run, Moraine Valley tried to double up Rooney on the play, but a wild throw to first enabled what proved to be the winning run to score. Joe Brumley struck out seven for his third win.
Thorobred District Tournament
Mike Scheffler (7-1) hurled a three-hit shutout as the Elgin AC stunned Arlington 2-0 Monday to remain undefeated in the Tournament (ages 19-21) Division Tournament, being played on diamonds at Wing Park in Elgin and in Arlington Heights.
Tonight, Elgin hosts the Chicago Panthers at 8:00 pm in a winner’s bracket game in the double-elimination tournament.
Scott Karsten and Scott McLean each drove in Elgin runs against Arlington. The AC had only two hits in the game.
Today's foe Chicago, tied Arlington for the Northern Illinois Thororbred League Title a conference in which Elgin finished fourth.
However, the AC won both regular season meetings with the Chicago team.
Elgin is now 2-0 in the tourney, having beaten Westchester 8-3 Sunday. In that game, Scott Meyer was the winning pitcher. Al Kurilla homered and Scott Karsten and Jerry Smith were both 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.

Elgin AC 3-0 in district
Tim Peabody drove in four runs with a homer and a triple in a 10-run fourth inning Tuesday night at Wing Park to lead the Elgin AC over the Chicago Panthers 12-9 in the Thorobred District baseball tournament.
Elgin, now 3-0 in the double-elimination competition is tentatively scheduled (due to the rainout of Tuesday’s scheduled game between Glen Ellyn and Arlington Heights) for an 8:00 p.m. game Friday against an opponent yet to be determined.
The Panthers scored twice in the top of the first inning and Elgin tallied once in the third before the big explosion in the fourth.
After Elgin scored to tie the score 2-2, Peabody cracked a two-run homer, his third round-tripper of the season, to send the AC on its way.
Before the fourth was finished, Elgin had collected four walks and four hits, which also included Peabody’s two-run triple. The Panthers committed an error in the inning and used a total of four pitchers.
Scott Karsten and Tim Rooney each drove in two runs for Elgin while Gary Lofgren and Mark DeMien added an RBI apiece.
Joe Brumley (4-1) scattered seven hits in seven innings of work.

Captures Thorobred Championship
Arlington Heights – The Elgin AC, after finishing fourth in the regular season, put it all together this week and culminated it Friday with a 9-4 thrashing of host Arlington Heights in the championship of the Northern Illinois Thororbred League.
The win advances Elgin to next weekend's state tournament in Elmhurst against a yet to be determined opponent.
Friday, it was all AC. The visitors, with the help of several key Arlington miscues, scored seven early runs and rode the clutch pitching of Mike Scheffler (8-1) to victory.
With one out in the first, Scott McLean singled and went to second when Victor Bill's ground ball was booted for an error. Scott Karsten followed by ripping a line drive to center which the center fielder misplayed, allowing the ball to go over his head to the fence for a two-run double.
After two walks loaded the bases, Jerry Smith cleared the bases with a double to left center and scored moments later on Tim Peabody's double. Peabody later scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring.

Thorobred Baseball State Finals
The Elgin AC finished fourth in the state. Elgin bowed out of the Thorobred (ages 19–21) State Tournament, losing to the Bloomington Bobcats 5-1 and to Elmhurst 3-2.
In the opening loss, Elgin got only two hits, but held an early 1-0 lead on Jerry Smith’s sacrifice fly in the first.
Against Elmhurst, Al Kurilla’s two-run single in the second game gave Elgin a 2-1 lead, but Elmhurst rallied for two in the top of the seventh to win.
In the second loss, Scott McLean hit an apparent solo homer in the fifth, but the umpires ruled the ball went under the fence that surrounds the Wing Park diamond and gave McLean a ground-rule double. He did not score.
