The UHH Vulcan baseball team handed the Eagles a pair of goose eggs to inaugurate their season, shutting out Judson College 3-0 and 7-0 Saturday at Wong Stadium.

The victories hiked Hilo's NAIA record to 10-0 and their college mark to 11-5. The Vulcan's and Eagles will close their four-game series with another twin bill beginning at 5:00 pm Monday at Wong.

The visitors from Illinois ran into the 12-strikeout pitching of Derek Diaz in the first g ame Saturday, but Mike Scheffler gave the Eagles a strong performance, allowing just one hit in his five innings.

Brian Van Meter relieved Scheffler in the sixth inning and gave up all three Hilo's runs on a hit and two walks.

Ron Komine and Rich Bryan each walked to lead-off the inning and both scored when Kallen Miyataki's sacrifice bunt was thrown away at first. The error allowed Miyataki to reach third, where Vince Bedoya took over as a pinch runner.

After a ground out and a strikeout, Lance Kukumitsu singled to left, driving in Bedoya with Hilo's final run.

Diaz scattered four hits – three of them to Scheffler and walked three in his seven innings of work. He boosted his record to 3-2.

Diaz was an 8th round draft pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1983!

The Vulcan's were ranked 7th in the NAIA in 1983!

Joe Arakaki struck out eight Eagle batters in winning the nightcap and lifting his record to 3 -1 in five innings on the mound. He gave up two hits, then yielded to Herb Kanihue, who also gave up a pair in his two innings of relief. Jerry Smith, who gave up five hits in his three innings, took the defeat.

Hilo scored two runs in the second inning and five in the fourth.

Richard Toledo and Fukumitai each walked to leadoff the second. Toledo scored on an error at first base when Chad Saki attempted a sacrifice, Fukumitai made third on the miscue and scored on a wild pitch.

The Vuls stung reliever Van Meter for five hits in the fourth inning which was highlighted by Komine’s two- RBI single to center that scored Bedoya and Gordon Muramaru. Besides Komine, the hits in the inning came from Maramaru, Wes Yonamine, Toledo and Saki, who doubled.

No batter from either team paired hits, but Saki for Hilo, and Tim Rooney and Al Smith of Judson all got doubles.

Joey Vierra, 2-0 is expected to start Monday’s first game, while coach Joey Estrella probably will call either Doug Spector, 3-0, or Steven Texeria, 0-1 for the nightcap.

Judson 8-4, Rockford 4-3, - Judson opened Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference play Friday with a doubleheader sweep of host Rockford College. The second game was called after six innings.

The Eagles scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning on four walks, two hits and a pair of Rockford errors to take command. Number nine hitter John Bower's two-run single keyed the rally. Jerry Smith's fourth-inning solo home run had Judson's only scoring at that point. Winning pitcher Brian Van Meter allowed six hits. “We played well defensively behind him, “said Judson coach Sam Harris.

In the nightcap, Judson scored all of its runs in the first two innings and then held on. The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the first on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Smith and a ground out by Brian Van Meter that added two in the second on Mike Scheffler's RBI double and another sacrifice fly. Rockford scored three times on an error after two were out in the last of the sixth before Scheffler got the final out for the win. Scheffler allowed only four hits in the game.

IBC 2-3, Judson 0-2 – Visiting Judson was one-hit in the opener and stung by a late home run in the second game in dropping a Northern Illinois Collegiate Conference doubleheader to Illinois Benedictine. The winners, who mustered only four hits against losing pitcher Brian Van Meter (1-4, 1-1) scored both of its runs on errors. A misplayed, windblown fly ball cost Judson one run and a windblown pop up went off Van Meter's glove six feet from home plate accounted for IBC's second run. Jerry Smith's second inning-single was Judson's only hit.

In the second game Mike Scheffler was handed the loss, despite only giving up four hits. Judson rallied in the top of the fourth on freshman Pat Hickey's solo home run and a fielder’s choice. A fifth inning IBC home run spoiled the comeback.

* There was a scout form the Phillies at the 2nd game watching me (Mike) pitch. I got an invite to a tryout in July. After I pitched the scout running the tryout came up and talked to me. He said he watched me pitch against Illinois Benedictine. He said I was throwing harder today than when he watched me at Illinois Benedictine.

Olivet Nazarene 4, Judson 3 – Judson's (12-13) postseason plans are in limbo following a 10-inning loss to Olivet Nazarene (20-12) in a five hour marathon game. Judson pitcher Mike Scheffler allowed only five hits in seven innings of work. Judson was leading 3-1 in the seventh when Olivet scored twice on two Judson errors to tie the game. Judson put runners in scoring position each of the extra innings, which were played at Dundee High School field when the Judson field became unfit to play on due to wet conditions. Olivet won the game in the top of the 10th on Tim Herr's two out RBI-single. Judson's hitting was led by Mike Kunch (2-for-4, RBI) and Pat Hickey (RBI). A scheduled second game was canceled due to darkness. * Olivet first baseman Mike Conway hit 12 home runs in 1983.

* Judson baseball coach Sam Harris told me (Mike Scheffler) that a scout named Marty Esposito from the Major League Scouting Bureau called all the Northern Illinois Collegiate Conference coaches and asked if there were any players they would recommend. Coach Harris said all the conference coaches recommended me.

A few days later Marty called coach Harris and asked if he could schedule a game with Northeastern Illinois. He wanted to see me pitch. Coach Harris tried to schedule a game with no luck. Northeastern was not available.

In July I attended a tryout the Major League Scouting Bureau was hosting at Tinley Park in Chicago. This was my last hope at getting signed.

On the first day all the pitchers threw to a catcher. After I pitched the scout told me to come back tomorrow.

I returned the next day and waited for my turn to pitch in the game. I was sitting in the stands waiting and noticed about five or more scouts from different major league teams.

I was waiting patiently for my turn to pitch. All the scouts left. Finally they called me and I said thanks but all the scouts left. The scout running the tryout told me he was the top pitching scout in the country for the Major League Scouting Bureau.

I pitched two scoreless innings in the game. The scout talked to me after the game. He said I was one of two pitchers who’s fastball got clocked at 92 mph (release speed). We were the top pitchers at the tryout.

He asked how I did this year and I told him I was (5-2), with a 1.58 ERA and pitched two shutouts. He asked how much I would sign for. I told him I would sign for nothing. The scout said he was going to Texas to look at a 19 year old pitcher. I'll call you when I return. He never called. I called Marty a week later and told him I would sign. I did not hear back from either one.
