Welcome to the 124th annual Norman County Fair!

“Where Summer Begins”

As a new member of the fair board I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Amy Germolus. I live in Ada with my husband, Austen, and our two sons, Oden (2) and Thorin (1). We farm wheat and soybeans, and enjoy all things outdoors and agriculture related.

I am excited to be on the board and see this as such a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community. I think fairs are one of the most iconic American traditions, and to keep them alive is something very near and dear to my heart. County fairs are something that bring us all together, bring back fond memories, give us the chance to make new ones, exhibit our talents, and maybe learn something new along the way.

My love for fairs began when I was too young for 4-H and has continued to grow every year since! It is so great to see our fair continue to embrace change and improve each year.

Speaking on the topic of changes and improvements, this year we have a designated smoking area and the rest of the grounds will be smoke/tobacco free. We take pride in our family friendly atmosphere and feel like this step will make the fair more enjoyable for all. Dogs will not be allowed on the fairgrounds unless they are a service animal. We continue to make the fairgrounds more accessible for those in walkers, strollers, and wheelchairs. You will see new concrete in the livestock pavilion, as well as more new sheep pens, and new poultry and rabbit cages.

The Mighty Thomas carnival is returning to the Midway, don’t forget to get your Mega Passes! Old and new vendors will be there to serve the crave-worthy fair food we wait all year for. We will be having tie-dye shirts for the kids on Youth Day – Thursday, and the Red Letter Band at the TRM Stage for Senior Day – Friday. Look for the o’Key Ranch Rodeo, 4-H and FFA shows and exhibits, pedal pull, bus races, and much, much more! New to the fair is MAX POWER, a nine foot tall robot who is a walking, talking, mobile dance party. There will be two horse shows at this years fair. The 4-H show will be on Thursday and the RRV Saddle Club fun show will be on Saturday.

The Valley Cruisers will be back at this years fair with their annual

2019 PREMIUM LIST RULES AND REGULATIONS ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All entries must be registered by the individual exhibitor, June 7, 2019, Any Questions: Call Danette Gwin, 784-4984, or 784-8141, leave message 1. The Norman County Fair Association management reserves the final and absolute right to interpret these rules and regulations and arbitrarily settle and determine all matters, questions, and differences in regard thereto, or otherwise arising out of, connected with or incident to the fair.

2. The management reserves the right to amend or add to these rules whenever it may seem advisable.

3. Livestock entries, and entries in all other departments, except 4-H and FFA, will be open to Norman County, all bordering counties, and all counties in the State of Minnesota that reciprocate in keeping their fairs open to Norman County exhibitors. It will be the responsibility of the exhibitor to prove his eligibility to exhibit and collect premiums.

4. All applications for entries should be made on printed forms and must be in accordance with instructions thereon and rules of the premium list. The entry blanks, after being filled out and signed, must be filed with the Secretary not later than the date specified for the closing of entries in the various departments of the fair. The right is reserved to reject any entry offered.

5. The fair management will use diligence to insure the safety of livestock or articles entered by exhibitor, after their arrival and placement, but under no circumstances will it be responsible for any loss, injury or damage done or occasioned by or arising from any animal or article on exhibition and the exhibitor shall indemnify the fair and management thereof, against all legal or other proceedings in regard thereto.

6. Bulls, cows and herds entered as such must be owned by the individuals or firms exhibiting them, but the property of animals may be shown simply as proof of their breeding qualities without such ownership.

7. In all cases which call for registered stock, all animals must be accompanied by certificates of registry, showing the animal is properly registered in the herdbook or flockbook which is recognized as being authentic for the breed which the animal is expected to represent.

PROTESTS AND APPEALS Section 1. All appeals from a decision of a judge must be made to the executive committee and filed with the Secretary within five hours after the award has been made, it being considered that an award is made when the ribbon or premium card is placed.

Section 2. The right of an exhibitor to appeal from the decision of a judge to the board, will lie only when it is charged that the award has been made in violation of the rules governing the exhibit; or when it is charged that the decision of the judge has been influenced or interfered with another.

Section 3. All questions in dispute or differences not covered by these rules shall be referred to the executive committee whose decision shall be final.

EXHIBIT SPACE AND BUILDINGS Section 1. Application for exhibit space in buildings or on the ground should be directed to the Secretary.

Section 2. Space assigned and not occupied by 6:00 p.m. on the first day of the fair, as well as all fees previously paid, will be forfeited as liquidated damages.

SANITARY REGULATIONS Dr. Larry Johnson Official Fair Veterinarian Regulations of the Minnesota Livestock Sanitary Board covering the admission of stock for exhibition purposes will prevail in the livestock department of the Norman County Fair. All livestock to be exhibited shall be accompanied by a health certificate issued by a qualified veterinarian, executed on the official health certificate form of the state where the livestock originates. Livestock or poultry known by the exhibitor to have an infectious, communicable disease or to have been exposed to an infectious, communicable disease, or to be from a quarantined herd or flock may not be entered in an exhibition. Warts and ringworm are considered communicable diseases. Therefore, livestock affected by these diseases cannot be exhibited. A statement from a veterinarian that an animal is being treated for these diseases is not acceptable. For further information, contact your veterinarian.

8. Up to four animals can be shown per individual provided those animals have been exhibited in 4-H or FFA shows for market animals only (animals must be owned or leased by exhibitor).

Swine: Swine must be individually identified and must: • have had a negative official pseudorabies test conducted within 30 days prior to the opening date of the exhibition; or • originate directly from a qualified pseudorabies-negative herd; or • originate directly from a Stage IV or V county or area.

(All Minnesota counties are currently Stage IV).

9. Entries for premium in the individual lots of grain, field seeds, fruits and forage shall not be permitted to appear as parts of collections.

Horses: all horses brought to public exhibition must have a negative Coggins test prior to the Norman County Fair. Certificate must be presented with entry.

10. The superintendent of each department will not allow any article to be taken away before 5:00 p.m. for all exhibits of the last day of the fair under penalty of forfeiture of the premium except by permission of executive committee. Livestock superintendents shall not allow any animal to be removed from stall or pen until 5:00 p.m. of the last day of the fair.

LIVESTOCK NOTES 1. Firms or co-partners entering for competition must be in existence at the time of making entry and in all cases must be bona fide, and affidavits of the age of the firm may be required by the management.

11. Entries for cattle must be accompanied by certificates of health by approved veterinarians. See rules in another column.

12. Stock and articles must be entered in the name of the bona fide owners, and grain, vegetables, fruit, dairy products and domestic manufacture must have been raised or made by the exhibitors thereof during the past year.

13. Exhibitors themselves must see the articles entered are delivered to the superintendents of the various departments; that they are properly taken care of during the fair, and afterward removed.

2. An animal owned in partnership may be entered in one partner’s name in all classes to which it is eligible but must be shown under but one ownership throughout the classification of the fair.

3. All animals one year and over, shown as purebreds, must have been duly recorded in their respective registry associations at the time of showing and such animals may not be driven into the judge’s ring until after registry number has been furnished.

4. Livestock exhibitors must furnish their own straw and hay.

5. There will be no stall rental.

14. Exhibitors must keep their flocks, stalls and pens in good, neat condition and open for inspection from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

6. FFA and 4-H members are encouraged to enter their livestock in the open class.

15. In the grain, forage and culinary departments, only one exhibitor from a family will be allowed in each lot, excluding 4-H and FFA departments.

7. All Swine must have a current health certificate stating they are from a PEDS free herd for 60 days.

16. Superintendents will have full responsibility and authority to run their departments, and they have the right to ask the exhibitors to leave and to withhold their premium check.

17. Any variances from the above rules must be requested in advance with entry. Pre-approval is necessary for late arrivals and/or early release.

PREMIUMS AND AWARDS remiums will not be awarded on articles or animals of inferior merit, P regardless of the number in competition for the premium.

The judges may award no premiums, third, second or first premium, as merit may warrant.

Section A - Power and Machinery –– Examples: clutch operation, cutterhead adjustment, transmission or differential operation, proper hitching procedure, hydraulic systems, sprayer calibration and operation, etc.

The time has come for the kick-off parade for the Norman County Fair. The date of the th parade is Wednesday June 20 with line-up at 5:00 and the parade starting at 5:30pm.

19th Enclosed is your registration for the parade. Please fill it out and return it to the address below. Pre-registration is not mandatory the important thing is that you are there to represent your business or organization.

We will line by the West side park across from Frandsen Bank and the Post Office..

There will be someone there directing you to your assigned spot. The parade will proceed East to West Main to Ralphs corner past the Thompson apts ending on the South side of the Ada-Borup School.

Candy will be permitted but PLEASE BE CAREFUL Walkers are encouraged to hand out candy. There will also be a ban on throwing water balloons and shooting water guns.

Mama’s Stolen Horses is an Americana/ folk-grass group with Kristoffer, (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo) and Abby Jo Robin (vocals, guitar, banjo, ukulele) as the core and often other members who sit in. They write original music from the heart about life, love, adventure, and experiences from the road. The 2 started playing together 10 years ago in Mankato MN and shortly after hit the road traveling the country working as glass artists, vending at Renaissance Festivals and sharing their music along the way. They started going by the name ‘Mama’s Stolen Horses’ back in 2011 while staying in Sedona AZ. With the inspiration of the landscape and the history of the wild west they envisioned themselves being like wild horses stolen to a gypsy life on the road.

The Norman County Fairgrounds will be tobacco free beginning May 20, 2019, except for one designated area near the beer gardens. Norman County Fair Board and Norman-Mahnomen Public Health recognize the hazards caused by tobacco use and exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke. The fair board has a long- standing tradition of creating a family, friendly environment and fair carnival.

No use of tobacco products including cigarettes, e-cigarettes and “spit tobacco” will be allowed on the fairgrounds. For any questions regarding this, please contact Don Merkens, fair board president.

The Norman County Fair holds an annual celebration in June to honor the agricultural heritage of our county. The 2019 Fair is scheduled for June 19-22, 2019. More information can be found at www.normancountyfair.com.

Norman County Fair History

Annual fair in Norman County has been a big hit since 1885 Hard times or not, Norman County wanted a fair.

The first attempt to organize a county fair association was at a meeting held in November 1885. It was agreed at that time to organize a corporation and elect one delegate from each town. This was not perfected until 1886 when a stock company with a ten thousand dollar capital was set up. Shares were sold at five dollars each. The Honorable Charles Canning was chosen as president.

The first association lasted only a short time and accomplished nothing. In 1893 a new one was formed with W.H. Bangs as its president and Louis Hintze as secretary. Stock was sold to raise money for expenses. Twenty-five acres of land southwest of Ada were bought, a racetrack laid, and a grandstand built. A barn for livestock was moved into place, an exhibit building erected by Pat Dullard, and a flowing well drilled. The fair was held September 24, 25, 26,1895, and had a total attendance of two thousand people and receipts of $758. There were not many exhibits, especially in the stock division, as there were no hogs shown and few cattle.

The people of Ada, always much interested in the success of the fair have contributed generously both in money and time to its support. In 1895 the council gave the fair association nine hundred dollars for the purchase of a site for the fairgrounds and buildings.

In 1921 the city bought two acres of land to extend the grounds, and in 1935 five more acres. It has also contributed money to pay for the bands engaged.

Ada businessmen always have assisted with the fairs each year.

The second fair was held October 1, 2, 3,1896. A roof had been built over the grandstand to shield the spectators from the sun and rain. The first free act was offered, a balloon ascension and parachute drop. This fair was a big success; over two thousand people were in attendance the second day alone.

Model T races at the Norman County Fair annual fair held September 28, 29, 30,1898. An agricultural hall had been built for exhibits. Tight rope walking, a slide for life and trick bicycle riding was added to the free attractions. Rain on the last day cut the attendance, causing the fair to go behind four hundred dollars.

This deficit was made up by subscriptions from the Ada businessmen. Except for the 1889 fair, the Norman County Fair was held during the fall until 1915 when it was changed to June or July when the farmers were not so busy.

In 1913 the fair board paid five thousand dollars for an airplane flight, Fred Decor piloting a Curtiss Biplane. Until 1915 the receipts had never gone over two thousand, but in 1921 they exceeded ten thousand. The 1916 fair was brought to an abrupt end by a terrific windstorm, which blew down the baseball grandstand, wrecked cars, and did much damage.

New barns were constructed, a new grandstand on the west side of the race tracks put up in 1920-21.

In 1925 the fair board decided to join the Red River circuit, but dropped out again in 1941. Almost twenty thousand people attended the 1929 exhibition.

The 1941 fair featured the Barnes-Carruthers free acts, Claude Barnes carnival, horse racing, old and comedy auto racing, horseshoe pitching contests, and dancing. Horses have gradually disappeared in the entries of exhibits at the fairs the last ten years, while cattle, hogs and chickens have increased. The 4-H clubs have their own exhibit buildings and take part in the programs. Hobby and flower exhibits are found in the later years. Horse shows have been part of the program before the grandstand during the last two or three years. In 1946 the receipts were over fifteen thousand dollars; in 1951 there were twenty thousand paid admissions at the gates and total receipts exceeded twelve thousand dollars. The Fair Association has spent its profits in improving the grounds, new offices and bathrooms and barns, painting and repairing the older ones, so today Norman County has an annual fair of which they can be justly proud.

The county fair is an event that people of all ages look forward to every summer. Youth in the 4-H program are especially excited to show off some of the great 4-H experiences and projects they have created throughout the year.

Youth are encouraged to enter into various project areas to showcase some of their talents, interests, as well as to help them to explore and develop new interests in different project areas.

Some of these areas include citizenship, consumer education, gardening, photography, crafts and fine arts, livestock, exploring the environment, foods and nutrition and youth leadership. It is always exciting to see what types of projects youth have developed over the year. While doing these projects and activities, youth are able to develop a variety of beneficial skills.

4-H is not just about the various activities throughout the year that youth participate in to help them develop a variety of skills. Many of these skills include leadership, self-discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, public speaking, critical thinking, and time management, along with many others that will help our youth to grow into their future selves.

Some of these activities include Share the Fun, demonstrations, community pride, the ambassa-

dor program, shooting sports, judging teams and bowls and community arts.

4-H is a great experience available to youth that helps them to be very well rounded individuals with various life skills that contribute to the growth of a healthy community.

Parents and volunteers are another huge part of the 4-H community. Our parents and numerous volunteers help our programs and events run smoothly. Whether it be helping with a camp, helping to organize events, or volunteering their time at the fair, they are always around and willing to help out. A big thanks to all of our parents, volunteers, and the community for helping to support our 4-H in so many ways.
