LOT 64 719 Heron Rd, Ottawa, Ontario Under Roberto Campos for Studio 4: Housing Studio In Collaboration with Lillian Gao

Situated at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Heron Road, Lot 64 aims to transform the single-use, car-centric campus into a sustainable, transit-oriented, mixed-use community. The site comprises an adaptive-reuse of the Sir Charles Tupper Building, along with eleven new buildings to densify the area in response to the housing crisis. New developments on the site utilize the existing fabric as a source of inspiration and generates a point of departure for the generous amounts of green space adjacent to the community. Each intervention responds to the layers of heritage significance while expanding on the site’s narrative within the landscape.

Lot 64’s new high-rise is a 25-storey residential housing project that aims to intensify the region surrounding the Sir Charles Tupper Building while remaining in line with the heritage of the site through materiality, green spaces, and courtyards. This building features a warm grey terracotta facade as its primary tone, with more organic, earth-toned terracotta fins as accents, referring to the brick tones of the adjacent Tupper building.

This building consists of 1- and 2-bedroom apartments, 20% of which are accessible. To compensate for the site’s drastic height change, the tower features four outdoor terraces on floors 3, 5, 11, and 18, functioning as vertical green spaces, as well as common amenity spaces for the tenants to feel more in touch with nature. These spaces offer generous views to the several adjacent parks that surround Confederation Heights.

The various green spaces within the building are fed through a cistern in the mechanical penthouse which slowly percolates water into the plants on each desired floor. The greywater is also used for each unit’s toilets to save on clean water consumption.

The terrace on the 11th floor also contains a greenhouse that acts as the heart of the building, growing various plants run by the community in order to supply various plants that scatter throughout the building, and the adjacent landscape.

THE REULEAUX MUSKOKA, ONTARIO Under Dr. Suzy Harris-Brandts for Studio 3: Urbanism on the Periphery In Collaboration with Steven Sum

This site was previously utilized for a sanatorium for patients with tuberculosis, but was later left abandoned. This project aims at looking at ways to revitalize this space, without gravitating to the conventional elitist typologies of privatized cottage housing. This site focuses on implementing an art program which invites students to build various models which would add to the peninsula as part of annual exhibitions in order to create artistic moments scattered throughout the site.

The central building (The Gauge) is the focal point which includes studio spaces, communal work shops, as well as an outdoor studio. The space is tailored to be utilized by visitors, as the linear pathways lead to the pinnacle of the peninsula allowing for a scenic finale, with green pathways used as picturesque moments that influence new exploration.

INDUSTRIALIZATION REIMAGINED OTTAWA, ONTARIO Under Dina Sarhane Urbanism Studio 2: Urbanism in the Core In Collaboration with Cameron Steiner & Christina Rodrigo The core of this project revolves around the revitalization of what was a current single used industrial site alongside St Laurent Blvd alongside the edge of the 417, morphed into a mixed used region that embraces the culture of living and working all at once.

Workers, artists and creators are invited to engage with the various maker spaces as well as live work typologies to enable a new cultural art / work sector, whilst looking at new ways to conceptualize land use and zoning as a whole

METRO FLORA HYPOTHETICAL SITE Under Ben Gianni for Studio 1: Fundamentals of Urbanism In Collaboration with Cameron Steiner

Metro-Flora analyzes a hypothetical neighborhood requiring a density target of sixhundred people per hectare. The neighborhood aims to redefine the boundaries of nature within cities and thoughtfully considers the views inside commercial and residential spaces. The public spaces bring the city to life while implementing a healthy balance of several green spaces, public plazas and an outdoor market to support local businesses.

At the core of the neighborhood is a tram stop in the center of the largest park, which creates a hub for pedestrians to disperse outwards in the given space. This space is surrounded by commercial buildings and pathways to other parks to give pedestrians diversity in the urban landscape. The connection to the rest of the city was carefully considered, pedestrian-only pathways such as bridges and walkways were designed to link both parks to each other via the market.

The western park was created to provide the surrounding apartment blocks with an interconnecting green space which creates a view for the buildings encompassing the park. The green landscape contains a winding stream of water that invites pedestrians to the central plaza in the heart of the green space, and continuing further south leads people towards the waterfront
