Despite challenges, the program has a high retention rate and allows students to stay in Nunavut

The territories' only law school program is chugging along two years after launching at Nunavut Arctic College.

The college, in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law offered a one-time fouryear law program in September 2017.

On July 28, 2019 the government of Canada promised $341,600 in funds over the next two years for this Iqaluit-based law program.

Stephen Mansell, Northern director of the Nunavut Law Program, confirmed the funds are being received and used for traditional law and cultural activities.

The funds will allow the law students the opportunity to receive hands-on legal experience in some experiential courses and programs.

According to the program director, the "biggest" advantage of the law program is the ability for students to remain in Nunavut.

"Many of our students have families which would have made attending a southern law school very difficult. Being able to stay in the territory provides students the ability to learn in an environment closer to family, friends, culture and language," said Mansell.

Nuka Olsen-Hakongak, a law student from Cambridge Bay, agrees that studying in Nunavut is the best aspect of this program.

"It's hard being away from cultural norms and family," said Olsen-Hakongak.

Another law student, Pascal MacLellan, said he had no interest in uprooting despite

his desire to pursue law school.

"When this program popped up, it was the perfect opportunity," explained MacLellan. Having "world-class" professors from across Canada and United States teaching the law courses is also another plus for MacLellan.

"For them (professors) to come up here and teach us, it's a great opportunity," said MacLellan.

Initially 25 students enrolled in this law program.

"We are extremely pleased with our retention rate which is 92 per cent. This rate matches or exceeds that of any law school in southern Canada," said Mansell.

Weather challengs for class However, having a law school in Nunavut does come with its challenges, according to the program director. Students miss more classes due to weather compared to students in the south. The students also encounter challenges due to less access to high speed internet and library resources.

Law student MacLellan admits better access to the internet is needed in order to connect with guest speakers through video conferences. Currently, according to both the law students, "condensed" courses are being taught. This means instead of having five courses over a semester, a single course may be taught in a couple of weeks or month. Upon completion, the students move onto the next course.

Even though Pascal recognizes the benefit of focusing on a single subject, he finds the condensed courses challenging.

"It's just hard to digest and then grasp that information and then how to apply it in the next subject," said Pascal.

However despite the challenges, Mansell believes due to the support of Nunavut Arctic College and Nunavut Justice community, the students are provided with a broad curriculum, quality facilities and an excellent faculty. There are make-up class times for classes that have been cancelled due to weather.

The students have a librarian dedicated to helping them with legal research and accessing materials. Additionally, various online databases and library materials loaned from the University of Saskatechwan are available for students.

"We've had a wealth of experienced professors come to teach us and I feel very lucky that they've left their homes in Saskatchewan (to come teach)," said OlsenHakongak.

Guest speakers like the current and past Supreme Court judges have also visited the law students, stated Pascal.

Aside from the growing pains and bumps, Mansell is "very" satisfied with the quality of the Nunavut law program. He acknowledges its success primarily to the students dedication to learning and academic achievement.

Newest Nunavut lawyer never gave up Lori Idlout called to the bar Nov. 22

By overcoming obstacles and having family support, Lori Idlout has earned her law degree. She became Nunavut's newest lawyer on Nov. 22, 2019.

The 45-year-old lawyer graduated with a law degr.ee from the University of Ottawa last year.

Idlout was born in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, but spent her childhood and adolescence in the North. Her family moved to Resolute Bay and eventually Iglulik became home.

As a child, Idlout had to deal with her father's suicide and separation from her mother.

After her father's death in 1982, the government had considered Idlout's mother "unfit" to raise children. Idlout and her siblings were sent to foster homes in Rankin Inlet, Chesterfield Inlet and Pond Inlet for a while until they returned home.

"I've suffered from abusive relationships and alcoholism," said Idlout.

It was her mother's advice that ultimately encouraged her to deal with these hardships and life.

"My mom taught me not ever to give up. She always taught me to keep trying no matter what."

Idlout's mother had also encouraged her to be a lawyer from a very young age. However, instead of pursuing law, Idlout graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology from Lakehead University.

She went on to work for the government's Department of Health Services; focusing on health and wellness related issues. Eventually she became the executive producer at the Embrace Life Council in Iqaluit.

"I always had it in my mind that I would go to law school and become a lawyer someday. It was just never the right time," explained Idlout.

Throughout her life, she showed interest in the work of various lawyers. She viewed lawyers like Anne Crawford, Annie Quirke and Mary Wilman as powerful role models.

When Idlout's sister died, she was terribly devastated. She could no longer work at the Embrace Life Council, a non-profit suicide prevention organization.

"I just did not feel that I was the 'right person' and submitted my resignation," explained Idlout.

Around 2012 a combination of factors lead her to conclude that she indeed wanted to study law. She felt a sense of independence and self-confidence to finally pursue her goal. She took law modules at Akitsiraq Law Society that reinforced her desire to become a lawyer. The support from her family members to pursue her law degree was yet another motivating factor.

"The support that I got from my whole family was just amazing."

Her family understood her need to leave the North in order to study in the south. Her two youngest daughters even moved to Ottawa

Despite all her motivation and support, becoming a lawyer was not an easy ordeal.

While studying law, Idlout had to attend to family issues as well as frustrations related to her studies and exams. As a result, she spent an additional half year completing the three year program.

At times, Idlout said, "it felt like the whole universe was against me."

There was judgment from professors and classmates when Idlout would receive a low grade.

"Having to submit papers, having to write exams and using this form

of education as a way to learn laws I think was quite foreign to me," stated Idlout.

Learning law based on British and European laws instead of Nunavut laws was another "huge" challenge for her.

Now as a lawyer in Iqaluit, Idlout is hoping to implement more Inuit legal traditions within the justice system.

She has tailored her robe with embroidered symbols to honour and reflect her heritage as an Inuk. Her goal is to be guided by an Inuit worldview when practicing law. Idlout says she is usually humble about her

accomplishments, but becoming a lawyer makes her feel proud.

"Normally, I don't like to be proud. I'm not that kind of person.

But for this one instance, I am definitely okay with it because I know how hard I worked for it (the law degree)."

To the young people who are on the fence about studying law, Idlout encourages them to try.

"Because at least if you go for it (law school), you'll learn if you're capable of it or not," said Idlout.

She believes "more people need to realize that we all go through hard times. We all do, but we can't give up.

We need to keep trying."

Data storage a barrier to body cameras MLA David Qamaniq says he doesn't want 'excuses' as police are 'very abusive sometimes'

Tununiq MLA David Qamaniq wants RCMP to wear body cameras but the territory's police force says there's a technological roadblock preventing it.

"The biggest hindrance at this point is data storage," said RCMP Cpl. Dmitri Malakhov. "Data storage and management solutions are being evaluated."

When Qamaniq raised the matter in the Legislative Assembly on Oct. 31, Justice Minister Jeannie Ehaloak said Nunavut's frigid weather may render the cameras inoperable.

Qamaniq isn't buying either of those "poor excuses," as he described them.

"With the technology we have now, everything is possible," he said.

"They can hire a person to look after all that data."

As for the cold weather, Qamaniq said the RCMP aren't out hunting on the land like Inuit.

"They don't stay outside all day long. They're in the office all day and the only time they go out is when they get a call," the MLA said.

It's due to physical altercations between RCMP officers and prisoners caught on camera in Iqaluit jail cells over the years and informal reports from constituents in Pond Inlet of aggressive behaviour by police that Qamaniq wants the body cameras in use.

"They (police) are very abu-

sive sometimes towards people that they're trying to arrest. (There's) a lot of things we don't see happening with the RCMP and Aboriginal people across Canada," he said, adding that he's been approached by people in his community expressing support for his position.

Malakhov said the RCMP won't comment on an MLA's assessment of any incidents.

"However, the public should rest assured that any and all complaints of police misconduct are investigated and when appropriate, the services of an external agency are requested to avoid a conflict of interest," Malakhov stated.

A Nunavut News Facebook post publicizing Qamaniq's view on body cameras received 156 positive reactions and 33 comments, the bulk of them in favour of such a measure.

The Tununiq MLA also mentioned the possibility of cameras mounted in RCMP vehicles but Malakhov dismissed that idea outright.

"No. Few interactions with police in Nunavut originate from a traffic stop," he stated.

There are 131 front-line RCMP officers in Nunavut. The estimated cost of supplying them with body cameras is unknown, according to Malakhov.

Nationally, the RCMP is continuing to evaluate the devices, he added.

"At this time, such cameras are deployed only for specific events, usually protests, with case-by-case approvals," said Malakhov.

It doesn't appear that Nunavut RCMP will be using body cameras until data storage issues can be overcome. However, Tununiq MLA David Qamaniq plans to keep applying pressure for the devices to be tested and adopted.

The challenge of data storage and the associated cost has led several American police forces to abandon body cameras, according to a Jan. 21

report in the Washington Post.

However, the law-enforcement agencies in question all comprised 50 officers or fewer.

Qamaniq said he plans to raise the issue again during the winter session of the Legislative Assembly in February.

There is no doubt that enforcing law and order in Canada's largest territory is a contentious issue between Nunavummiut and law and justice officials alike.

People call the police when they need help and expect the courts to punish criminals when they commit crimes. The problem in Nunavut is that most of the people going to jail are Inuit and most of the people administering justice are qallunaat from down south.

Such an arrangement is bound to breed resentment and distrust.

In Nunavut News' Addictions special edition Nov. 25 we referred to this arrangement as a process and management system where southern-trained police, judges, lawyers and the accompanying bureaucracy operate a high-priced assembly line through which troubled and traumatized Nunavummiut are placed to be spat out on the other side toward whatever remedy this process and management system decides.

There are many well-meaning people in this system, many who truly care but most are not of Nunavut nor are they able to relate to their mainly Inuit clientele.

The cold spot now as temperatures reached -51 C which makes it darker and we have less daylight hours, it does not get very bright now, just a couple hours of daylight now.

Soon we will have 24-hour darkness which means more moonlight when clear. Cambridge Bay looks like a little Christmas town all lit up when darkness sets in. A beautiful view when you drive up to the airport road towards tank farm to take a photograph of the community.

In the past at old town across, we would play out when the moonlight is bright as there

were no street lights or electricity yet. We only had dogteams then for transportation. I remember going to school by dogteam when done end of school days we would get picked up by dogteam again. These are good childhood memories.

We did not have houses back then, only lived in iglu and tents, then started building cabins to live in as they were warmer. We had oil stoves was a real treasure to have. We hauled water and ice for use in our iglu and tents and cabins. Back then we had a tower which had a light that blinked 24 hours a day, that is when Inuit that lived out on the other parts of the land at their camps would come to our camp/village to visit and shop and share country food. The tower lights were used as a locator knowing you are close to Cambridge Bay. We knew there was visitors and relatives coming because all the dogs would start barking. We would all get dressed and go outdoors and welcome our visitors. This is when we all put hot water on for tea and put on pots of food on to welcome our visitors, after feasting and getting our visitors and relatives settled, we would have a drum dance in the biggest iglu or tent or cabin.

The cold winter weather has returned after having milder temperatures in full force. Some of the ocean and lakes seem to be different with not fully iced up. So when travelling and going hunting please be careful and watch for open water.

Children at Kullik Ilihakvik are busy preparing for Christmas festivities and we the

whole community get all excited for the annual Christmas concert where we get to watch our children and grandchildren perform singing, dancing and acting Christmas. Sometimes we need a bigger school and gymnasium to make

sure our whole community has room. Get your cameras ready! Christmas concert is on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Kullik Ilihakvik starting at 6:30pm. See you there.

Baffinland proposes to resume hearings in April Mining company highlights $2 billion in future royalties to NTI, QIA

Baffinland Iron Mines would like its Mary River phase two regulatory hearings to reopen after Easter in April 2020, the company informed the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) in writing recently.

Baffinland is seeking two more weeks of hearings and hoping to have the regulatory process completed by mid-May so that NIRB can submit a recommendation to the federal minister by late June.

During Baffinland's NIRB hearings in Iqaluit in early November, Aluki Kotierk, president of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., requested a suspension of the hearings for eight months to a year so more information could be gathered.

In its recent correspondence to NIRB, dated Nov. 29, Baffinland expressed a willingness to work with the north Baffin communities in the interim to answer their questions on numerous topics and to make additional written submissions to NIRB. The mining company also reiter-

ated that the benefits for the communities and Inuit organizations will be substantial "The strong and comprehensive IIBA, together with the additional commitments that Baffinland has made to the communities as well as the estimated $2-billion Canadian dollars in royalties that will be collected by NTI and QIA in respect of the project will help ensure that Inuit meaningfully benefit from the phase two proposal," Baffinland wrote.

"This is in addition to any direct or indirect employment, or contracting opportunities, which Inuit may benefit from throughout the life of the Mary River Mine."

The company already announced in mid-November that 586 contract employees, including 96 Inuit, were being laid off due to the existing delays in the regulatory process. The correspondence to NIRB hints at further possible repercussions.

"An extended delay or suspension of the NIRB process as suggested by some parties would result in serious and negative effects to Baffinland as well as its employees," Baffinland wrote.

Inuinnaqtun mentorship program seeking donations Kitikmeot Heritage Society throws its efforts behind initiative to increase speakers of declining Inuit language

Some of the shrinking number of Inuinnaqtun speakers in the Kitikmeot are being recruited to act as mentors to apprentices who want to learn the Inuit language.

The Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society is fundraising to support the Mentor-Apprentice program, which generally requires 900 hours of learning for the pupil to become fluent in the language.

The society has set a goal of $17,000 in donations by the end of December to allow two mentor-apprentice pairings to begin the first 150 hours of instruction.

The approach the heritage society is using is adapted from a successful model used in California and British Columbia, said Pamela Gross, the society's executive director.

Although it has been estimated that Inuinnaqtun – spoken by fewer than 600

people – could disappear within two generations if more isn't done to preserve the language, Gross said a sense of optimism remains.

"It will be building capacity within our community so we have more people who are learning the language and able to teach as well," said Gross. "It's all one-onone speaking, no English or anything else. It's just Inuinnaqtun 100 per cent. It's not in the classroom per se, it's doing activities together and speaking and acting gestures out ... and then practising it."

The instructor who led a recent three-day "training the trainers" workshop in Cambridge Bay came from Vancouver Island. There were only five fluent speakers left who knew her ancestors' Indigenous language. However, she gained command of it and now is teaching it to others, said Gross.

"Now they're resurging their language and that's so powerful and amazing that language can do that when

people have the drive," she said, adding that a delegation from the Kitikmeot travelled to Port Alberni, B.C. in September to witness the mentorapprentice method in action.

The expectation is to begin the initial two mentor-apprentice pairings in Cambridge Bay in January.

A panel will select the first learners from a list of residents who want to take part.

"It's going to be hard because we already have people that are interested," said Gross.

Each pairing will report to senior Inuinnaqtun speakers monthly to show their progress.

Gross noted that there are plans to expand the mentor-apprentice program into Kugluktuk, Gjoa Haven and the NWT community of Ulukhaktok in the future.

Those are the other communities where Inuinnaqtun is still spoken.

The language was disrupted by the residential school experience, which

removed Inuit children from their homes and deprived them of exposure to Inuinnaqtun.

Public donations for the mentor-apprentice program will supplement a variety of other sources of funding,

according to Gross.

The Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society also sponsored a video documentary project that Reel Youth delivered in late November.

Fourteen youth filmed

interviews with land users and elders – some of them speaking Inuinnaqtun – discussing climate change.

Five short documentaries will be created and those will be screened in Cambridge Bay next spring.

Levy Uttak wins national tourism award

Iglulik Levy Uttak of Iglulik captured the Most Inspiring Cultural Ambassador award from the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada on Nov. 14.

The distinction goes to someone who "inspires those around them in a way they represent their culture to visitors.

The recipient leads by example and provides guidance and mentorship to those who are finding their path to represent their culture."

Uttak, owner of Igloo Tourism and Outfitting, definitely meets those criteria, according to Sebastien Desnoyers-Picard, director of marketing for the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada.

"Levy has always been very generous about his time and always providing help to anyone around him," said DesnoyersPicard. "As a proud Inuk, he's sharing his culture in the most honest and historically accurate way. He's a great storyteller and a very reliable person ... Nunavut can be proud to have such a strong ambassador."

Uttak and his wife Yolanda, started their business in January 2018.

"I've been out hunting pretty much since I was four with my father ... that's one of the reasons I became an outfitter," Uttak said.

He takes visitors out on the land to see wildlife and for hunting and fishing expeditions. He already has people lining up to tour iglu hotels next year.

Igloo Tourism and Outfitting employs a couple of local dog mushers, up to five snowmobile guides, two cooks, elder advisers and a few youth. He's had clients and inquiries from all over the world, including China and Italy.

"They want to see the traditional way of our area," he said.

"It's going really well and it makes me really happy that we're able to employ hunters in Iglulik."

Launching and maintaining a business involves "never ending" paperwork, he said.

"I almost gave up a few times," he admitted.

He said the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada helped him overcome the administrative hurdles.

Youth drop-in opens up in Kimmirut

Kimmirut Karah Kushnir, an elementary teacher at Qaqqalik School took the initiative to open up a youth drop-in centre at the Kimmirut's Wellness Centre on Tues. Nov. 26.

Her goal is to provide a warm, safe and comfortable space for youth to hang out during the cold winter months.

On its opening day, 12 youths showed up at the small centre.

They had spaghetti with meat sauce and clementines. The following Tuesday, the youth made their own tortilla wraps.

Kushnir is using funding she received from Taking It Global to purchase the food.

Besides the space and food, the teacher is providing youth with board games and art activities.

In the future, depending on funding, she hope to get a t.v. or even a game console.

The drop-in is open for free to all youth, who are between 11 to 17 years of age. It is open every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In 2020, Kushnir wants to expand the drop-in to include adults and create life skill workshops.

She hopes to have a drop-in on Fridays evenings for adults aged 18 to 24.

On Sundays, ideally around noon, she wants to conduct workshops focusing on resume writing and interviewing skills.

"I'm happy there's a space. I'm happy people are really into this idea and they want to support me," said Kushnir.

More than $700 raised at Movember hockey showdown

Iqaluit Two teams of mostly mustachioed police and firefighter hockey players took to the ice in the name of charity on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the Arnaitok Arena in Iqaluit.

When it was all said and done, more than $700 had been raised to benefit the Movember Foundation, which assists men afflicted with health issues such prostate cancer, testicular cancer, anxiety and who are suicidal.

The RCMP won the closely-contested hockey game, 7-6.

Malakhov also gave credit to Corey Joudry, who notched the game winner for team law enforcement – a "late-game heroic goal that Sidney Crosby would have been envious of," as Malakhov described it.

"The only thing better than his goal was the celebration and victory cry that followed," he said, adding, "Everyone had

a great time and there was an excellent turnout supporting a great cause."

It's fairly common practice for men to grow moustaches during the month of November to help increase awareness of men's health issues.

Promoting healthy living through entertainment

Iqaluit The Nunavut Disabilities Makinnasuaqtiit Society (NDMS) was promoting Movember with Wing Night (the band) on Dec. 7. The Toronto band is a hip-hop and R&B cover band that specializes in the classics of the 90's.The event was scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. at the Store House in Iqaluit.

NDMS is an organization that advocates the inclusion of individuals with disabilities and barriers.

"We like to promote wellness and well-being in the community. Tobacco reduction is a good way to promote wellness and well-being," stated Issac Mensah, an Employment Specialist at NDMS. "Wing Night likes to use entertainment to promote healthy living. They decided to support us."

It was a night of enjoying hip-hop and R&B music while creating awareness of healthy living. To encourage inclusivity the event was free of charge.

Northern Networks Ltd. signs deal with major mining supplies company

Arviat Northern Networks Ltd, a general contractor under Arviat's Eskimo Point Lumber Supply, has signed a partnership deal with Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology to bring Sandvik's products to Nunavut's mining companies.

Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology supplies drills, underground loaders and trucks, automation and digital solutions, rock tools and various parts.

"Becoming an authorized Sandvik distribution partner will allow Northern Networks Ltd to leverage their extensive knowledge of Canada's North to support the growth of the mining industry and stimulate further economic development in their community," states a news release issued by the partners on Tuesday.

Ryan St. John, president and CEO of Eskimo Point Lumber Supply and Northern Networks Ltd., equated increasing technology with "more opportunity."

"As you automate (in mining) there is more opportunity for people in the community to be a part of that industry and gain employment thanks to new technology, a lot of younger people are so computer-savvy and they are already working with their hands and equipment every day," said St. John.

St. John noted his company's workforce comprises 170 employees - 60 per cent of from Inuit communities.

Families win a Christmas dinner

Mittimatalik/Pond Inlet This year to share the holiday cheer, Jennifer Ringrose decided to offer a fully paid Christmas dinner to a family within the Pond Inlet community.

On facebook, Ringrose wrote, "We'll happily take care of purchasing the food they need to make their Christmas dinner a delicious and filling one, including a turkey."

She encouraged people to nominate a person/family who could use a "little" help with their holiday groceries.

The post received over 160 comments with plenty of nominations.

Using a random number generator on Google, the recipient of the prize was drawn. Lisa Apak, who was nominated by Rebs Qulitalik-Killiktee, was declared the winner.

"I'm so happy," said Apak. "I did not expect that (dinner) for Christmas."

Apak felt very grateful for the dinner. Jeff W. Hidgon, who often visits the community, really liked Ringrose's idea. He too decided to spread the holiday spirit by drawing another recipient. Asenath Nasook, who was nominated by Sarah Enooagak, was the second winner.

"Anything that can be done to help address food security is great, no matter how small," stated the Winnipeg resident.

Both families will be getting a Christmas dinner along with a Co-op gift card for perishable items. Severalcommunity members have also donated anonymously to help pay for the dinners.

Wrestlers hit the mat

Thorold, Ont. A group of young wrestlers from the territory hit the road this month for a barnstorm-type of tour around Ontario.

The first stop was Thorold, Ont., on Dec. 4 for the Thorold Traditional Tournament and it saw some success as Eekeeluak Avalak of Cambridge Bay scored himself a gold medal in the boys 54-kg weight class. Ezekiel Kilabuk of Pangnirtung was also a medal winner as he captured bronze in the boys 47-kg weight class.

The tour continued on Dec. 6 as the five wrestlers, along with coach Chris Crooks of Cambridge Bay, were in Brampton, Ont., for the Howard Gairy Memorial Tournament and it all wraps up with the Bishop Ryan Invitational in Hamilton, Ont., on Dec. 13.

Arena closed again

Kangiqliniq/Rankin Inlet Rankin Inlet’s new arena will be closed this week – again – but it’s not ice-related this time.

David Clark, the hamlet’s recreation co-ordinator, said in a social media post that the arena’s new scoreboard will be installed on Dec. 12 and 13, forcing the closure of the facility for those two days while the work is going on.

Normal operations will resume on Dec. 14.

Something else the new arena in Rankin Inlet has is a newly-named officials’ room in honour of Darrell Greer, one of the longest-serving hockey officials in Nunavut. Greer retired from officiating in 2018 and worked every tournament there was to work in Rankin Inlet and other Kivalliq communities for close to two decades.

He also served as the referee-in-chief of Hockey North for several years.

Hockey fans in Arviat are in for a good show when the next Jon Lindell Memorial (JLM) Calm Air Cup senior men's tournament rolls around following news out of Whale Cove last week.

Tourney organizer Gleason Uppahuak, who is currently working in Whale Cove, informed Kivalliq News both Iqaluit and Iglulik are confirmed to make their first appearance at the JLM next month.

He said there is also about a 75 per cent chance that two teams from Northern Quebec – Puvirnituq and Inukjuaq – will also be suiting-up for this year's JLM Calm Air Cup. "We owe a big debt of gratitude to our main sponsor, Calm Air, for making all this possible," said Uppahuak.

"Calm Air are going to put on a special flight to pick the Iglulik team up in Naujaat and transport them to Arviat for the tournament.

"The two teams from Northern Quebec will be dropped-off in Sanikiluaq and Calm Air deserves another huge thank you for agreeing to pick the two teams up in Sanikiluaq and take them to Winnipeg and then on to Rankin and Arviat.

"The only thing we're waiting on right now is for Puvirnituq and Inukjuaq to make their deposits on the special flights – so I can only say 75 per cent chance of them being here until that deposit is made – which we're all hoping will be any day now."

Uppahuak has been working toward growing the JLM Calm Air Cup for the past 12 years and the 2020 JLM now promises to be the most elec-

trifying tourney of them all.

He said Inukjuaq were competing at an aboriginal tourney this past weekend in Val-d'Or, Quebec and a number of players on the team were said to be excited about attending the Arviat tourney in January.

"There's going to be plenty of good teams in our A Division this year and more good teams than ever before in the B Division," said Uppahuak.

"I can pretty much guarantee the JLM is going to be a 12-team tournament next month.

"Right now, it looks like our A Division will feature defending champion Arviat, Rankin Inlet, Puvirnituq, Inukjuaq, Iqaluit and Naujaat.

"I think Kivalliq hockey fans will agree that is one awesome A Division for any tournament in our region."

Uppahuak said it's been a lot of work over the years to

get to the verge of hosting a JLM Calm Air Cup this exciting.

He said he gets butterflies when he thinks about the promise the 2020 JLM holds in store for Arviat hockey fans.

"This tourney will also be a little different for me because I'll be playing with Whale Cove this time out," he said.

"The community has been very, very welcoming to me ever since I started work here and I want to play with their team this year just to show them that I have nothing but the highest respect for their team and community.

"I have absolutely no worries about Arviat being able to handle the number of players coming in for the tournament next month. Our community is very welcoming and very friendly and we'll accommodate every need the players have next month, I'm sure."

Recognizing Nunavut’s finest Northern News Services

The 2019 Sport and Recreation awards celebration and dinner was held at Frobisher Inn in Iqaluit on Oct. 26. Athletes and coaches from all over Nunavut attended the event.

Over a dozen awards were given out this year, including awards for the best coach, team, female and male athletes. About 100 people including, Premier Joe Savikataaq, were in attendance at the gala.
