Letter from NNR President

Come Support a Good Cause! Bazaar at New Location On Nov. 7 the NNR will host its popular Charity Bazaar, an amazing shopping opportunity to buy gifts before Christmas. For the NNR, it is our major fundraiser to benefit local charities. The Bazaar will run from 9am - 4pm at the Chaengwattana Community Church in Nichada. Everyone is welcome! The NNR raises money from corporate sponsorships, vendor fees, raffle tickets, and silent auction prizes. We are grateful for the sponsorships from Asian Tigers, Chevron, Halliburton, Ford, Nichada, and Bumrungrad. We have 75 vendors, including 15 new ones, and approximately 120 raffle prizes. Some very special prizes will be up for auction on the day. The money we raise goes toward supporting eight local charities on a regular basis, plus many other projects within our local area. As expats we are fortunate to live in Nichada Thani and live the lifestyle that we do. Please join me in giving back to our community by attending and supporting the Bazaar. There will be two entrances to the Bazaar, one from the street in front of the church, and the second by the Nichada pool gate. Parking will be available at the Villa parking lot, as well as on the street going to the Tropical Residences, at the Baan Rim Lake parking lot, and on the street in front of the church. Please reserve parking in front of the church for non-Nichada guests. Some of the vendors, identified by special signage, will be from charities that NNR supports. Please offer them your generous support. Enjoy your shopping experience! Mare Harvey, NNR Chair

Thani Talk ~November 2013

NNR Social - Thursday, November 14 Happy Hour with Bollywood Dancing Fun! This month we have decided to give our Happy Hour a fun Bollywood theme. Carla Stolper has very kindly invited us into her beautiful home. Carla has worked as an interior designer, so it’s worth coming along just to get a few ideas for your own home. Why not catch up with friends old and new over a glass of wine with a few snacks then join in the Bollywood fun. Irit Namatinia, who is a Bollywood dance teacher here in Nichada, has kindly offered to come along and get us up on our feet by teaching us some fun, easy dance steps. I suggested that she assumes that we are all beginners - well I am anyway! Irit will kick start the dancing with some of her Bollywood dance students (yes, you will probably know them) giving us a Date: Thursday, November 14 demonstration of how it should be done. She will also have an Time: 4:30 to 7:30 pm extensive range of Bollywood accessories for sale such as Indian Venue: Carla’s home, Soi 6, bangles, coin belts, bindis, body stickers and much more. 39/922 The Regent You are welcome to just watch if you don’t feel comfortable joining in but it should be great fun and it gets us all active. NNR Bazaar Makes Charity Donations Possible NNR (Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach) depends on advertising sales and proceeds from its annual bazaar for funds to support a wide variety of Thai charities. When you shop at the November 7 NNR Bazaar, rest assured that it’s all for a good cause. Organizing a successful bazaar each year is no easy feat. So we thought we’d introduce NNR’s hard-working Bazaar Team below. The money they help raise through the bazaar is put to excellent use with the help of NNR’s Charity Team members, who make sure that money goes to the most needy and deserving charities. Seven team members, 7 nationalities. Truly an international effort!

October 17 Charity Coffee Volunteer Opportunities in the Nonthaburi Community “You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.” Winston Churchill The first-ever NNR Charity Coffee was held October 17, and it was well received by all. Despite the rainy weather outside the coffee was well attended with nearly 40 participants. We had 11 wonderful speakers, some of whom were representatives from organizations while others were volunteers from our own community. They all spoke from the heart, and I think it was difficult for people to decide what to volunteer for, as there are so many worthy causes right here in our neighborhood. Guest Speakers Our first speaker was the amazing Dorothy Klynstra from Canada who has been a full-time volunteer in Thailand for 16 years! She is with The Foundation for Welfare of Mentally Retarded Children and does a wonderful job of improving the lives of so many disabled children in the Nonthaburi province, working with children from many of the government orphanages. Dorothy coordinates outings from the orphanages so that children who rarely get out are able to see and enjoy things they don’t normally get a chance to experience.

Get Involved To assist Dorothy covering classes for grades 1-3 on Thursday, Friday (8:3010:10am) or Saturday mornings (9am-noon) Contact Dorothy at dorothyk67@hotmail.com

One of the projects Dorothy is involved with is Project OGAT at Baan Rajawadee Boys Home. To volunteer with this project you will need a letter from the foundation so please contact Dorothy if you are interested. Dorothy has also fostered a boy with special needs who has a scholarship to a Christian School in Pakkret. In order to finance this, since she is a fulltime volunteer, she teaches ESL (English as a Second Language) at her son’s school. She would love to have some help with this to free up time in her busy schedule to complete other volunteer obligations. Another dedicated lady who spoke was Anna Lillethun from an organization called iCare Thailand Foundation. This is a charitable organization that is committed to long lasting and meaningful community development through projects that empower youth and help the underprivileged. They are involved in several projects in our neighborhood such as Baan Poomwaet for at-risk boys. The NNR is hoping to work with them on some projects in the future so we can make the best use of our resources. Lauren Avery from Christian Care Foundation for Children with Disabilities made the choice of where to volunteer even more difficult when she spoke of the wonderful things that they do. One of their many projects is running Rainbow House, a day center for disabled children. 6

Thank You I would like to thank our other lovely speakers Susan Curtis, Jenn Bradley, Dana Stehwein, Alexandra Ries, Nicole Wright, Kellie Wilson, Sandie King, and Shana DeHaven. A big thank you also to our splendid hostess Becky McLeod who created the perfect setting for the event. (As well as ideas for volunteering, we also got some interior design ideas from Becky’s lovely home!) Thanks too to those who attended and brought dishes to share; they were much appreciated. A special thanks to Liz Lu for arranging to bring weavers from the Home for the Destitute to demonstrate their craft. Thank you to the lovely staff and residents who came to demonstrate how the rugs and baskets were made. I think they really enjoyed the outing and being in Becky’s comfortable home eating some treats! Giving Back I hope you all find some way that you can enjoy giving back while living this comfortable expat life that we lead. If you are “time poor”(as Kellie put so well in her talk) please consider donating much needed supplies (see page 9 for list of items needed), or helping at one-off events such as the orphanage outings. NNR Partners with Teens to Donate Pillows for Homeless Elder Care Club at ISB is a relatively new high school club that tries to help local homes which care for elderly people and other disadvantaged groups. We are not a large group, with usually no more than 10 students accompanying each visit. At each visit, we sing songs and dance and engage in interactive art activities with the elderly residents. The happiness this brings the residents is rewarding. Many of the people we visited have lost significant others and are usually lonely and neglected. Our goal is to ensure that they never feel forgotten again. We have visited numerous homes around Bangkok, but last year we began focusing our attention on the Nonthaburi Home for the Destitute. We did so because we realized that before we extend a helping hand to the needy in greater Bangkok, we should focus on first improving conditions for people in our own neighborhood. The minute we first stepped foot into the Nonthaburi home, we knew we wanted to devote all of our attention towards helping the homeless residents there. Working with Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach, we have worked on a number of projects to help residents at the Home, including donating DVDs, clothing, and supplies. Our current project, the largest so far, is to purchase 350 Thaistyle pillows for the Home. Residents sleep on the bare floor, and some resort to using empty water bottles as pillows to rest their weary heads. Through Elder Care Club’s partnership with NNR, we are excited about this and future projects. We look forward to being able to continue making a positive impact on the lives of others. White Elephant Volunteers Raise Funds at Book Sale

The White Elephant is a local volunteer-run, non-profit thrift shop located on the second floor of Oasis Plaza on Samakkee Road. The shop collects donated goods and re-sells them to use the proceeds to benefit organizations and people in need. The White Elephant hosted their first ever book sale at the Nichada Market last month. The shop had accumulated a large and diverse collection of donated books from the generous people living in our community. There were too many to fit on the shelves at the store, so we brought the books to the Nichada Market. With the generous support of the community, we were able to sell hundreds of books. We also held a 50/50 raffle where people could purchase raffle tickets and the raffle winner would get half of the raffle money, and the White Elephant gets the other half. We selected a raffle winner at the end of the book sale and would like to congratulate the winner, Cathy Sackett! Cathy made us winners as well, as she very generously donated all of her winnings to our shop. Thank you so much Cathy! Through the book sale and raffle, we were able to raise approximately 9,000 baht, which will be used to support a local organization in need. We hope to have another book sale in the new year. Until then, if you missed the sale, we still have plenty more books at the shop, as we are continually receiving donations. So please stop by. The White Elephant shop was founded in September of 2010 and is completely volunteer operated. There are about 15 volunteers currently who work in the shop. Volunteers typically work two-hour shifts between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. The White Elephant has donated over 500,000 baht to various organizations, schools and countries since its inception. In addition to providing local villages with medicine, food and personal care items, the White Elephant has supported charities such as Operation Smile, Refugee Camp Thung Khanan Clinic, Shining Hope in Africa, Japan Tsunami Relief, Flood victims in Bangkok, SCAD and Tsaghgunk Open School in Armenia and more. The shop’s is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am -2 pm and Saturday 10 am -12 noon. We are in need of a few more volunteers to work in the shop and are also accepting donations of household items. Please come by the shop during store hours if you’re interested in helping out. Thanks again for the community support. Happy reading! Jennifer Bradley 10

Volunteer Snapshot: Tiffany Hebbard of Sop Moei Arts

Sometimes you just “find your fit.” Back in 1999, a good friend dragged me to Bangkok to see “this hilltribe project.” With beautiful products and phrases such as self-reliance, income-generation, staffed by volunteers, and all proceeds back to the villages being used, I was hooked. Why Sop Moei Arts? The people: Pwo Karen hilltribes of Sop Moei district, Mae Hong Son province; the story: a 1977 health care project led by Kent Gregory that, based upon the superior weaving skills of the Pwo Karen, turned into a textile weaving and basket-making project benefitting the villages; the mission: a dedicated group of volunteers, because SMA is self-help initiative, not a charity. So, for the past 14 years I’ve volunteered in various capacities: working shifts in the Bangkok shop, volunteering at the annual Bangkok sale, working the table at the NNR Bazaar, and holding NNR coffee mornings at my home. My biggest role has always been keeping SMA “alive” in Nichada and organizing the annual Nichada Sale. Volunteers are always needed to staff the Bangkok shop. To learn more, we invite you to our table at the NNR Bazaar, and to the sale at my home on Nov 15 and 16. The products sell themselves, but we are happy to tell you the story!

Thank You: Truffle-Making Workshop

Thani Talk ~November 2013

NNR October Tour Truffle Making at the InterContinental When I read that the October NNR tour would be a truffle making class at the InterContinental Hotel, I could barely contain my excitement. I proudly admit I was the first to RSVP. If I had a bucket list, learning to make truffles was on it. Apparently, I was not alone. Several ladies in Nichada are now gourmet-chef-trained truffle makers. The tour started off with our arrival at the InterContinental and a warm reception by Stephen Meredith, the hotel's Food and Beverage Director and Chris Busschaert, the head pastry chef. They were welcoming, gracious and attended to us like we were VIPs. We were immediately whisked into the training kitchen to start making chocolate. Just as in television cooking shows, Chris had all the ingredients separated and ready for our preparation. He uses only the finest ingredients and imports European chocolate to make his creations. He demonstrated and explained each step in the process as we worked as a group to make two truffle recipes. We made a Thai Chili Chocolate Truffle that was both decadent and spicy and a Blond Caramel Truffle that had a rich, creamy, caramel flavor. Both were absolutely delicious. After making them, we were encouraged to try our work too. There were no complaints about that! Chris had a great sense of humor and was a wonderful teacher. He repeated multiple times that if we ever needed any help or advice to just email or contact him directly. We were all impressed by our work and left inspired to go home and try truffle making ourselves. As a special treat at the end of class, Stephen and Chris gave us each a parting gift of a box of truffles to take home. After the truffle class, the fun continued as we were escorted to the InterContinental's Summer Palace, an authentic Chinese restaurant for a delicious dim sum lunch. As expected, we rolled home happy ladies. It was a fantastic way to spend a half day. If anyone is ever interested in trying Chris's delicious truffles or pastries, they are available inside the hotel next to the deli counter and also on the hotel's famous buffets. He takes orders too. Truffles make excellent business and personal gifts all year. Amy Sorensen 13

Book Reviiew

Cross-Cultural Protagonists Featured in Young Adult Novels As a parent of cross-cultural kids, I look out for fiction that features them. Here are two new young adult novels with border-crossing main characters. Perfect for a teen near you? Gadget Girl: The Art of Being Invisible by Suzanne Kamata (GemmaMedia, 2013) This novel tells the story of Aiko Cassidy, fifteen-year-old daughter of an American mother and a Japanese father she has never met. Growing up in Michigan with cerebral palsy, Aiko tucks her wishes for acceptance and control into a manga series that she creates and distributes anonymously. Then her mother wins a prize for sculpture that takes them both to Paris and brings encounters with their past. Aiko meets a handsome French waiter and, in a visit to Lourdes, questions whether she would change who she is given the chance Both novels are available as ebooks through Amazon.com, and from the Kinokuniya bookstore in Bangkok. The Language Inside by Holly Thompson (Delacorte Press, 2013) Emma Karas grew up in Japan but moves to Massachusetts when her mother develops breast cancer. Feeling lost in her “native” US, Emma develops migraines and longs to help friends in Japan who survived the March 2011 tsunami. Life changes when she meets a boy who studies Cambodian dance, who introduces his own community’s devastating history. Emma processes loss and healing in poems that she writes with Zena, a feisty woman living with locked-in syndrome at a long-term care center.

Gadget Girl and The Language Inside pull together a whirlwind of places and themes. Gadget Girl: Michigan, France, Japan, cerebral palsy, manga, sculpture, film, out-of-wedlock pregnancy. The Language Inside: Japan, America, Cambodia, breast cancer, locked-in syndrome, migraines, earthquake/tsunami, genocide, dance, poetry. Aiko and Emma fly and Skype across oceans, study language, sample music and cuisine, create boundary-blurring art, and search for themselves around the globe, all while negotiating school, first love, and tragedy. In other words, they are a lot like teens in Nichada. A reviewer for Publishers Weekly comments that the many strands in The Language Inside can “seem like too much”—which is exactly how a multicultural life can feel. But the reviewer goes on to say that the strands are masterfully woven, creating a “seamless” fictional world. As both reader and parent, I see this accomplishment as a source of hope. Both Gadget Girl and The Language Inside are swift, amazing reads, well worth savoring in hard copy or as ebooks. Enjoy with Aiko’s favorite breakfast in Paris: pain au chocolat! Suzanne Kamata has edited the anthologies Call Me Okaasan: Adventures in Multicultural Mothering and Love You To Pieces: Creative Writers on Raising a Child with Special Needs. Holly Thompson authored the novel Orchards and edited the anthology Tomo: Friendship Through Fiction, which she launched at ISB in an author visit in March 2012. By Avery Udagawa 22

Heard It Through The Grapevine

Thani Talk ~November 2013

How to Get Small Bills from an ATM Machine In my experience, it seems many people think that they can only get 1,000 baht notes from an ATM, as they usually press fast cash for Baht 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, etc. and then that's what they get. This is not true. If they take a few extra seconds and type in 4,900 or 9,900, 14,900 etc., then they will get a variety of bank notes: 100's, 500's and 1000's. This is better. Why? Because in Thailand it's always best to have smaller notes when dealing with taxi drivers, local vendors etc. who don't usually have change for a 1,000 baht note. It saves time for everyone.

Night Bike Ride through the City of Angels I recently went on a great night bike ride tour of Bangkok with the Co van Kessel Bike Company, started by a Dutchman around 30 years ago. The staff is great and they offer 12 different tours of different lengths and costs (our 3-hour night ride was 950 baht per person). It was a really fun adventure! A dozen of us started our ride at the company office at River City Shopping Center at 6pm. Given a choice between a nice Trek mountain bike or a cushy-seated "lady bike" with a basket, I chose the basket. I knew in the crowded areas we would be riding that we would not be speeding around or jumping over rocks. I chose well, but either bike would have been fine. We were given reflective vests and blinking lights for the back and front of our bikes, but oddly, no helmets. Luckily my friends and I had brought our own. I later took mine off and put it in my basket, because I felt a bit overly cautious with it on while slowly walking my bike through the markets. We had one tour guide in the lead and one in the back to herd us all through the city. The tour took us through places I had never seen before, including a visit to a beautiful Chinese temple, a ride under Memorial Bridge and past the Chinatown Gate (gorgeous at night!). We crossed the river by ferry and rode around the Wat Arun area. It was quite a unique experience riding through Chinatown with all the lights and bustle and through the flower market, but the highlight for me was going into Wat Po at night. Quiet and eery seeing the memorials to past monarchs all lit up. The trip ended back at River City about 10pm. We drove home exhilarated and tired at the same time. Well worth a try! http://www.covankessel.com/tour/co-by-night-3-hour-bicycle-tour/ Susan Curtis 26

Emergency Contacts In case of Snake Bites There are occasional sightings of snakes in Nichada yards and gardens. In the event of snake bites, contact either: 1) Chulalongkorn University Hospital (1873 Rama IV Road), which specializes in snake bites and rabies. Emergency direct line: 02-256-4214. 2) Thai Red Cross Society Snake Farm (1871 Rama IV Road) Tel: 02-252-6117 Source: Bangkok Guide,

Neighborhood Bike Repair Shops There are two neighborhood bicycle repair shops not far from Nichada. For biking enthusiasts who do long-distance rides, the go-to place is Interbike at 1/179 Samakee Road. This is where you’ll find basic bikes as well as imported high-end bicycles, gears and equipment. For the rest of us who peddle around on simple bikes to run errands, a little shop on Soi Prasert Issaram, (outside Nichada main gate, at corner before veering left towards NY Diner and Subway) does the job. Owner K. Suwit takes care of both bicycles and motorbikes, and does everything from pumping up tires and fixing flats to complete tune-ups. Liz Lu

Paleo Diet Cuisine Delivered to Your Door What did you eat for dinner this week? Honey orange glazed beef cheek with ratatouille? Coconut encrusted chicken salad? Well, that’s what I had, thanks to an amazing new company in Bangkok called Paleo Robbie, which delivers fresh, healthy meals straight to your home or office. A paleo diet, short for paleolithic diet, is also known as the caveman diet or hunter-gatherer diet. It emphasizes the benefits of ancient diets based on wild plants and animals. According to the Paelo Robbie website, its meals “ do not contain any preservatives, added sugars, artificial ingredients, or cheap harmful oils, and all the meat is free range, synthetic hormone free, antibiotics free, and all the fish is wild.” I’m trying to encourage our community to lead healthy, active, and balanced lives, and that’s why I’m suggesting you give Paleo Robbie a try. I’ve lived in Bangkok for nearly 12 years, and I can honestly tell you that you will not find healthier food exploding with flavor like this anywhere.. Each meal costs 400 baht, with a 50 baht delivery charge per meal to the Nichada area. Paleo Robbie requires that you buy twenty meals at a time. To re-order, simply top up your account by emailing Paleo Robbie. Payments are made through ATM transfer - they truly make it easy! Website: paleorobbie.com Facebook: Paleo Robbie

Panthers Football Club Welcomes New Members

It is Sunday at four, and some hard working Nichada residents (usually gentlemen) gather to chase a ball up and down a field. Yes, the beautiful game exists, and if you have ever wondered where husbands, fathers, or neighbors disappear to on Sundays, this could be it. The Panthers Football Club kicked off in 2006 thanks to Tim Meisburger who simply wanted to organize casual Sunday soccer for Nichada’s adults. These games remain popular thanks to the players, and ISB for providing one of the best fields in Thailand. As well as Sunday, Thursday nights feature visiting teams from around Bangkok. The Gray Panthers, or the Nichada Panthers, or just the Panthers, as they're sometimes called, are undefeated so far this season. Recently, the World Medical Center on Chaengwattana became the first ever sponsor; the team is now The WMC Panthers. Their sponsorship allows for new jerseys and community service projects. One of the first is to supply coaching, footballs, and uniforms to schools in Pakkret. Thank you World Medical Center for this support! New players are welcomed, and if nothing else you’ll get a good workout with a good group of people. Many players also participate successfully in Bangkok area tournaments. Meanwhile, you might consider following your husband/dad/neighbor out the door and spectate on a Sunday or Thursday. It promises to be entertaining. If not, follow the action through the images and video on our website (http://nichadapanthers.wordpress.com/). Stephen Romary 34

Recipe Corner: Thanksgiving

Thani Talk ~ November 2013

Thanksgiving Recipe: Parker House Rolls I have never (ever, ever) claimed to have the ‘Martha Stewart gene,’ but after watching her prepare these rolls on her show several years ago, I was intrigued enough to try to make them myself. They looked relatively easy, with baking terms I could easily understand. As Martha explained, these rolls get their distinctive creased shape from the head baker at the Parker House Hotel in Boston in the late 1800s, who threw these rolls onto a pan in a fit of rage after clenching each in his fist. I’m not sure why the baker was so angry, because the rolls are delicious -- and they were a huge “hit” at both of my family’s Thanksgiving dinners that year. While I won’t be “home” to prepare these for my extended family this year, the tradition will continue in my own home. Happy baking! (And, yes, this picture is of the rolls I actually baked!) Ingredients 1/2 cup melted (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus more melted butter for brushing bowl 1 1/2 cups warm (115 degrees) milk *Note: If using instant 2 (1/4-ounce) packages active dry yeast *See Note yeast, skip the milk/yeast 6 tablespoons sugar step and add in with the 2 teaspoons salt flour. Also, skip Step 3’s 2 large eggs, lightly beaten punch/rest. 6 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface Directions 1. Brush a large bowl with butter; set aside. In a small bowl, sprinkle yeast over 1/4 cup milk. Let stand until soft, about 5 minutes. In another large bowl, combine butter, sugar, salt, remaining 1 1/4 cups milk, and egg. Whisk to combine. Whisk in yeast mixture. 2. Using a wooden spoon, stir in flour, 1 cup at a time, until you have a soft dough. Turn dough out onto a floured work surface, and knead until smooth and elastic, 5 to 10 minutes. Place in prepared bowl, turning to coat with butter. Cover with plastic wrap. Let stand in a warm spot until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. 3. Punch down dough. Cut into 2 pieces. Invert bowl over dough, and let rest for 10 minutes. Working with one piece at a time, on a lightly floured surface, roll into a 12-inch square, about 1/3-inch thick. Cut into six 2-by-12-inch strips. Cut each strip into three 4-by-2-inch rectangles. 4. Brush rectangles with butter. Using the handle of a butter knife, crease rectangles slightly off center. Fold at crease. Arrange in rows, slightly overlapping, on buttered baking sheet, with shorter side facing down. Allow at least 1/4-inch of space between rows. Cover and let stand until doubled in bulk, 20 to 30 minutes. 5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Brush rolls with melted butter. Transfer to oven and bake until golden, about 17 minutes, if baking a single strip, about 25 minutes if baking 3 strips at a time (1/4 sheet pan). Remove from oven and brush once more with melted butter. Thank You: October Happy Hour

Thani Talk ~ November 2013

NNR October Happy Hour Thank You to Oanh Thompson for a Social with Vietnamese Flair The NNR Happy Hour was held on the evening of October 10 with a distinctive Vietnamese theme at the home of Oanh Thompson in Greenville. On arriving at Oanh’s house, I felt as though I had walked into an Aladdin’s Cave as it was full of beautiful colourful lacquerware of all shapes and sizes, as well as other wonderful Vietnamese handicrafts. There was an amazing spread of finger food – great variety and very tasty – and of course plenty of wine and other refreshments. There was a good turnout and many of the ladies couldn’t resist shopping. It was fun and relaxing to catch up with chums and to meet new people in such a friendly and convivial atmosphere. Our gracious host Oanh generously provided raffle prizes. An exquisitely embroidered tablecloth complete with 12 napkins was won by Connie, and a dazzling lacquerware picture of Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” was won by yours truly!

The NNR raised a total of 9,600 baht from the raffle to be donated to the much deserving Home for the Destitute. The Elder Care Club at ISB will receive 5,000 baht of the proceeds to reach their goal of providing 350 new pillows for the elderly residents of the home. How grounding it is to think that an item we just take for granted will mean so much to others. The remaining money will also be used to buy much-needed items for the Home. Oanh also invited her friend Tony who runs a Vietnamese travel agency called Vietsailings. There were a few ladies present who were already satisfied customers, having visited Vietnam and had trips tailor-made by Tony. Vietsailings has a good variety of travel itineraries and you can tailor them to your own requirements and interests. For more information, visit www.vietsailings.com. I would like to extend a big “thank you” to Oanh and Paul Thompson for inviting us into their lovely home. A great time was had by all! Sarah Glaze, NNR Social Chair We look forward to seeing you at the next NNR social event – Bollywood dancing! See page 3 for more information. 45

Restaurant Review

Restaurant Review Maverick Restaurant and Bar Another hard day at the office, and your intrepid Restaurant Reviewer has to slug it out sampling the fare that Bangkok has to offer. It is a tough life indeed! For those of you who have just arrived in Bangkok, this is indeed a happening time in Bangkok’s culinary landscape. New restaurants are opening all the time, new styles of cooking are emerging, new chefs are arriving, and new styles being explored. International influences abound, and the general quality of food, drink and décor are now on a par with anywhere in the Maverick Restaurant world. In other words, this is a great time to live and eat in BKK. and Bar Maverick is one such ‘happening’ place. “French origins, world flavors,” says their tagline. It is a fusion of European foods – and seems to attract a Soi Asoke 3 European clientele – with a little bit of French, a little bit of Spanish, and a Sukhumvit 19 (next to little influence from around the world. The menus are very creative, with Ocean Tower 2) yummy accompanying relishes, chutneys, dressings and sauces that really make the dish. Tel: 02-665-2772 Presentation is lovely and elegant. In www.maverickbkk.com fact, it is all rather lovely and elegant – and the desserts get a special mention! These show a definite French influence, which is a good thing. They are delicious Prices for lunch range from about 150 baht for a starter through 350-790 baht for the a la carte main dishes. The set lunch price for a starter and main course is 490 baht. Desserts are 150 baht. Expect prices to be slightly more in the evening. However, quality and value is definitely achieved! One thing that would normally receive a big black mark from me are the two televisions situated in full view of this casual fine dining restaurant. However they just about get away with it, as they show videos of their chefs at work, producing their creations. They have an extensive selection of wines and gorgeous glasses and carafes to go with them – sounds odd, but they really are quite beautiful. And, of course, there is a large selection of teas and coffees, for not only is this a restaurant, but it is also a place for stepping out of the heat to enjoy a coffee at the bar, European style. Luckily for us, there is also a little shop that sells the artisan bread, pastries and desserts, which are so delicious. Conclusion? Well worth a visit – great ambience, an interesting and creative menu, and just a lovely place to spend some time with friends or family. Go and enjoy. Sally Elliott 49
