SCAS APPOINTS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PATIENT CARE AND SERVICE TRANSFORMATION Helen has been an Executive Director of Nursing for over 15 years and has worked in Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust, Kings College Hospital NHS FT, East Kent, Chelsea & Westminster and Guy’s & St Thomas.

Professor Helen Young has been appointed to the SCAS Board as Executive Director of Patient Care and Service Transformation, in place of Deirdre Thompson who retired in May this year. Before Helen starts in September 2017 Jane Campbell, Assistant Director of Quality, will join the Board on an interim basis.

In addition to the above Helen is a Trustee for two charities helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged adults and children. Helen lives in rural Wiltshire and comes from a farming background. She loves spending time with her rescue pet lab and horse.

Helen brings a wealth of executive level health sector experience to the role, most recently from the Board of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Helen has been leading on the development of new models of care for maternity services at a national level and across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Helen has said she is “delighted to have been offered the opportunity to work with the team at SCAS and build on the strength of the organisation and the work Deirdre has done”.

Helen also spent 6 years as Executive Clinical Director and Chief Nurse at NHS Direct, shaping and developing clinical telephone assessment and virtual patient care in this country.

Anyone can become a Governor and you don’t need specific skills or experience because we provide you with the training you need.

The only requirement is an interest in the Trust and a willingness to get involved. So if you have an interest in your community and health in general, this could be for you!

What if you just want to vote for someone?

Then that is OK, we hope as many members as possible want to vote and choose who is going to represent them, even if they don’t want to stand for election themselves.

All members will automatically receive a voting pack either by post or via email.

We are asking our Foundation Trust Members and other stakeholders across our four counties to provide their views on a number of topics and services. The results of this survey will help to inform the Trust’s plans for the year ahead.

SCAS welcomes New NonEmergency Patient Transport Colleagues from Surrey and Sussex On Saturday 1 April SCAS welcomed staff members who are working on the new Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) as we went live with the contracts in Surrey and Sussex.

The team here at SCAS worked hard with our partner organisations to ensure a smooth handover of contracts.

On average we now undertake an extra 1200 patient journeys a day.

This equates to around 3500 NEPTS journeys across the SCAS area.

In addition we answered 2761 calls a day covering the new areas at the contact centres in Southern House, Eastbourne, Durrington and Dorking.

We are delighted to report that SCAS was amongst the 30-strong list of Diversity and Inclusion Partners for 2017-18 announced by NHS Employers in May. Following a tough selection process, a total of 30 NHS organisations have made it through to be included in this year’s programme.

Support will include four interactive modules, designed by the partners themselves to help them stay on the cutting edge of policy, as well as providing opportunities to share good practice and network.

Through the free programme, NHS Employers supports participating trusts to build on their performance on diversity and inclusion over a year-long period.

The programme is also closely aligned with NHS England’s Equality Delivery System.

NHS organisations are awarded partner status once they have shown that they are sticking to the following criteria:

08:00 - Icky is on standby to be sent to the next Red call. However, a few minutes later he is called by the Clinical Hub at Reading (a new innovation in SCAS staffed by specialist paramedics), who have spotted a job that could be perfectly suited to Icky’s skills.

Known as Icky to his friends and colleagues, he is based at our Bletchley Resource Centre in Milton Keynes and qualified as a Specialist Paramedic in March 2016. He joined SCAS in 2011, having previously worked for the Welsh Ambulance Service for 21 years, having joined as an ambulance cadet aged 16. His is the archetypal ‘man and boy’ career path and having worked in both frontline and management roles in Wales, is relishing being back on the frontline for SCAS.

The incident has occurred in Hanslope. An elderly female has fallen out of bed and can’t get up. Her son is at the house for access. There is a possibility the patient is injured and it’s not clear how long she has been on the floor, so that – plus her age – means we go on blue lights for the 14 mile trip from base.

“Sometimes what you think you want, ends up not being what you want at all”, says Icky. “I always felt a little uncomfortable as a manager, for a variety of reasons, but this job is me all over.”

Icky gives her a full check-up – blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugars – and tells her that he doesn’t think she needs to go to hospital and she is very happy with that.

06:30 – Met up at Bletchley for the start of his 07.00-19.00 shift, and the first task is to check the rapid response vehicle (RRV), equipment and drugs on board.

Talking with her son at the scene, he tells us that she has advanced cancer and she has been getting weaker over the last few days. Icky checks with her son about the existing care arrangements, and then focuses on empowering him to get in touch with her GP and Willen Hospice to better manage and keep her as safe and comfortable as possible in her final weeks.

Icky says: “The skillset of a paramedic today is far beyond what it was when I joined the service. Paramedics can do so much more for patients at the scene, and specialist paramedics are one level up again.

Whether it’s wound care, administering strong painkillers or things life changing a catheter, it all means the patient gets the care and treatment they need there and then. This benefits SCAS because we then don’t have to supply an ambulance to take that patient elsewhere for further treatment, and it also benefits our partners in local hospitals who don’t have someone else coming through the doors at A&E.”

10:00 - Once we have cleared from Hanslope, Reading Clinical Hub are on the phone again to Icky, having identified another local job he could attend. A female in her early 30s has called NHS 111 this morning complaining of sharp abdominal pain.

Once reached his destination, Icky asks a few initial questions on why she called NHS 111 that morning and discovers there is a possibility she might be pregnant. A pregnancy test is performed (negative) and UTI test also negative. Having pressed and felt the affected area, and carefully watched the patient sitting uncomfortably whilst answering his questions, Icky advises he will contact the GP and see if he can get her an urgent appointment that afternoon.

The patient says she tried to call the surgery this morning for that but was told they couldn’t fit her in.

Details coming through from our Control Centre as we drive at normal speed to Emberton suggest access may be a problem – there is an almost Crystal Mazeesque raft of instructions “…the key safe is attached to the rear of the right post of the emergency lane barrier.”

Back in the car, Ichy calls the patient’s GP who advises that the patient should call the surgery and ask for an appointment with the GP by name and she will make time to see her.

We arrive and it becomes readily apparent she is practically immobile, very pale and simply standing still is an ordeal – movement is practically out of the question. Icky gives her a dosage of diazepam, a relaxant, and waits to see what effect this has on the patient’s pain after 10-15 minutes. The answer is very little. The patient states she regularly takes very strong painkillers and it seems she has built up a tolerance level to them.

The patient was triaged by NHS 111 and advised to attend an emergency treatment centre within the hour, but no-one is available to take her and she doesn’t think she’d be able to physically get in to a car due to the pain.

Meal break - We are now into the 1.5 hour meal break window in the middle of the shift, so we head back to Bletchley RC and once there, book on for a 30 minute lunch break. We have lunch with one other paramedic at the centre.

Unfortunately, in this incident, Icky is unable to prevent a trip to A&E and calls control to request a transporting ambulance. An ambulance duly arrives with Emergency Care Assistant David Birch and Paramedic Alun Franklin who then take her to Milton Keynes Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

Back on the road - As we finish the 30 minute break, we are given our next job.

At Emberton Country Park, near Olney, there is a 35-year-old female reporting severe back pain/sciatica. Before heading off, Icky checks the drugs on the RRV to make sure he has what he might need when he gets there.

Back in the car, we are asked to return to base to see a patient. A member of staff has suffered a deep cut to hand whilst pumpkin carving and Icky is asked to return to Bletchley RC to clean, dress and close the wound as it won’t stop bleeding.

17:00 - As early morning crews start to come off shift, we are once again moved to ‘Red protected’.

17:53 - We get an alert – as do an ambulance crew just about to book off at 18.00 – for a Red 1 call to HMP Woodhill Prison. Icky tells me that we could be there for hours, well passed the scheduled 19.00 shift finish.

A few minutes into the drive we are stood down (as are the ambulance crew). It transpired a prisoner was found unconscious but as both SCAS resources are stood down, Icky surmises that the incident was something that the prison’s own medical team can deal with. Back to base we park the RRV in the garage and have a quick handover to Andrew Inskip, the specialist paramedic who is coming on duty at 19.00 and will be taking over our car.

A big thank you to Icky and everyone at Bletchley RC for making me feel so welcome and giving me a great insight into the specialist paramedic role at SCAS.

BERKSHIRE SUCCESSFUL PROSECUTION FOLLOWING STAFF ASSAULT In March 2017 Reading Resource Centre crew members Christopher Dinsey and Stephanie Hudson were called to attend a patient who was reportedly unconscious.

Once at the scene, one of the two crew members prepared to move the unresponsive patient into the ambulance but was suddenly attacked by the person in question when he tried to remove the patient’s rucksack. Thankfully the other crew member; who had gone to the vehicle to fetch the trolley, was able to distract the patient long enough for both crew members to retreat into the safety of their vehicle and request police back up.

Upon police’s arrival, the patient proceeded to assault the police officers too. After a long struggle and the assistance of a further police backup, the patient was finally restrained.

The perpetrator was arrested and appeared in court in April. He was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment for his actions that day.

SPECIAL LIFESAVING INITIATIVE LAUNCHED IN HAMPSHIRE

Deputy Chief Officer, Russell Morrison, said: “The partnership is something our special constables are extremely passionate about; being able to offer an additional potentially lifesaving service to the communities and people they keep safe.”

27 April saw the formal launch of a unique, lifesaving partnership between SCAS and Hampshire Special Constabulary. Believed to be the first such partnership in the country, a sixmonth trial has commenced that will see six special constables, trained by SCAS, being available to respond to local medical emergencies when they are out on patrol.

Dick Tracey, Community Responder Manager at SCAS, said: “Due to the nature of their work, the special constables are often roaming across the more rural parts of the county. If we get a 999 call saying someone is in cardiac

SCAS WELCOMES MIDWIVES FROM PORTSMOUTH HOSPITALS NHS TRUST On Monday 10 April we were delighted when SCAS welcomed Midwives from Portsmouth Hospital Trust (PHT) who joined the Award Winning Labour Line service alongside the existing team of Midwives from Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust (HHFT) and University Hospital Southampton (UHS).

This means that the team, which is based in the SCAS Clinical Coordination Centre (CCC) in Hampshire, will now support women and their families right across Hampshire as they begin their journey through labour.

The Labour Line launched initially on 5 November 2013 with a team of Midwives from HHFT who were based in SCAS Clinical Coordination Centre to deliver a dedicated phone line to women and their families HHFT area.

The dedicated team of midwives from HHFT, UHS and PHT provide a first point of contact for women and their families choosing to have their babies either at home, in one of six birth centres, or one of four obstetric units across Hampshire. They provide support and advice to early labourers and assist them through those challenging days and hours leading up to established labour, and the last stages before meeting their new baby.

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE THE MAYOR OF MILTON KEYNES PAYS A VISIT TO BLETCHLEY On Friday 14 April Stephen Coventry, Mayor of Milton Keynes, visited our Bletchley ambulance station. The Mayor said “I would like to thank South Central Ambulance Service for the great hospitality shown to me during my visit and ride out with them from Bletchley ambulance station.”

“Sue and Mark were fantastic hosts, very knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble for them. I was very impressed with their skills in dealing with patients at a time when I know it is very stressful for both them and their families. Their caring attitude put everyone at ease, and the kindness and care shown made it look very easy. I know that I personally learnt a lot from them which will undoubtedly help me as a local Councillor in making decisions at Council that will have an impact on how Council services work with our partners in the health arena.”

SUCCESSFUL PILOT IN HIGH WYCOMBE LEADS TO NATIONAL LAUNCH How would you feel in our shoes?

Step away and let us work In the previous edition of Foundation Times we informed our readers that last year SCAS teamed up with Pubwatch members in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire to promote a new poster campaign to highlight the safety problems faced by frontline ambulance staff. We are now pleased to announce that the campaign will be launched nationwide. In the past twelve months, SCAS staff reported they were physically assaulted 115 times and verbally abused 166 times.

The campaign focussed on three main elements: èè A respect campaign, to educate the public and patients to give staff room to work and not crowd them, allowing them to best help the patient in or outside premises. èè To promote the message that ambulance service staff should not receive verbal abuse, harassment or physical/sexual abuse from its customers in or outside premises. èè To make Pubwatch member premises more aware and active in ensuring the safety of the ambulance service dealing with patrons, by encouraging them to report verbal abuse, harassment or physical abuse leading to banning persons from all member sites.

The campaign attracted a lot of publicity on social media, journals, and in the press with a visit from BBC news following and interviewing Dave Baker on a night shift in High Wycombe. This has been viewed nearly 100,000 times.

The results of the pilot in High Wycombe were impressive with no reported incidents since its introduction. High Wycombe did not just stop there and by using a combination of initiatives including SCAS conflict resolution training, local ‘angry man’ scenarios with Thames Valley Police, NHS Protect posters in ambulances, station level awareness campaigns, and press support they significantly reduced the overall reported assaults.

NHS Protect also heard of the campaign and asked to meet Dave to find out more. Following this meeting Dave spent the next six months working with NHS Protect and National Pubwatch on a national best practice guideline for ambulance services working with Pubwatch. This was published and sent to all ambulance security management service and security management directors on 31 March 2017. This best practice guide and the success of the High Wycombe pilot was also presented at the 2017 national alcohol partnership meeting held in London last March.

OXFORDSHIRE 10,000th PATIENT FOR THE CHIPPING NORTON FIRST AID UNIT Over the long Easter weekend, the specialist paramedic team that runs the Chipping Norton First Aid Unit saw their 10,000th patient. The honour of notching up this tremendous milestone went to Chrissy Ames, who has worked for SCAS for 10 years but joined the ‘Chippy’ team in December last year.

“It was Easter Monday when the 10,000th patient came in through the doors”, said Chrissy, “but it was a very hectic day with 21 patients at the Unit in total. It was only at the end of the shift when I was inputting my paperwork into the database that I realised what had happened!”

To mark the occasion, a special celebratory cake was provided to Chrissy and her colleague, Gary Toohey, who has been at the Unit since it opened in 2011.

The Medicines and Research Team, led by Divisional Medical Director, Professor Charles Deakin, has seen a very successful 12 months. With a ground breaking conference, successful trial implementation of Paramedic 2 and now their win of Outstanding Research Team Award at the Wessex Clinical Research Awards last March it couldn’t have been a better year. The team won against their competitors for their work on the Paramedic 2 trial, raising the profile of health research and cementing it as part of our service.

Professor Charles Deakin said “The team has worked incredibly hard this year to deliver a very successful programme of research activity for the Trust. It is not without challenge but we have all worked together and this has resulted in positive external recognition of our achievements. Thank you to the whole team for your continued efforts and I look forward to further achievements in the year ahead”.

Friday 5 May was World Hand Hygiene day, which aimed to remind everyone of the importance of hand washing.

Each year the ‘Save Lives: Clean Your Hands’ campaign aims to progress the goal of maintaining a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in health care and to ‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement globally.

One of the core aims is to reduce Antimicrobial resistance where our bodies become less reactive to prescribed antibiotics. It is thought that in 10 to 20 years’ time our body systems will become resistant to most antibiotics, so we need to act now to reduce the impact of this antimicrobial resistance.

Germs can be passed from person to person or indirectly by touching unclean equipment or surfaces. Cleanliness experts say hygienic cleaning will help prevent germs spreading in the home or work environment. For SCAS staff, hygienic cleaning involves focusing our efforts on areas in the workplace where germs are more likely to spread and cause infection to others. The use of Clinell wipes helps to kill most germs.

“Good hygiene is not a once-weekly, deep-down clean,” says Professor Sally Bloomfield, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “Hygienic cleaning needs to be an ongoing part of our daily lives, where hygiene measures are targeted where and when necessary.”

She says that cleaning aids, such as cloths or mops, must be germ-free or they’ll spread germs to other surfaces. Germs can multiply easily - within eight hours, one bacterium on a damp cloth can multiply to six million.

Hayling Island Community First Responders strike again A big thank you to the Co-Operative Group manager Adam Casey and his staff at the Selsmore Road Co-Op who allowed our CFR trailer to be located in their car park, and for the generous donations from Co-Op customers through the membership charity scheme.

Through the Co-Op Group charity scheme that supports local communities, customers have given over £450 to the community responders.

Red 2 - Red 2 calls are serious but less immediately time critical and cover conditions such as stroke and fits.
