PIAZZOLLA & FALLA Saturday, November 3, 2018, 6 p.m. Spanish Flame: Piazzolla & Falla Roberto Minczuk Music Director Peter Soave bandoneon Catalina Cuervo soprano Bernstein Slava! A Political Overture for Orchestra Piazzolla Bandoneon Concerto, “Aconcagua” Piazzolla “Adiós Nonino” Falla Suite from The Three-Cornered Hat Begin with Bernstein, for the second of three consecutive NMPhil Classics concerts, and his rousing Slava! A Political Overture for Orchestra. Then the bracing rhythms of Astor Piazzolla’s Bandoneon Concerto, “Aconcagua,” ahead of his musical gem “Adiós Nonino”—featuring Peter Soave, the world’s foremost master of the bandoneon and concert accordion. Finally, “the fiery soprano”— Catalina Cuervo—takes the stage for a sizzling-hot performance of Manuel de Falla’s The ThreeCornered Hat. Variations Bernstein Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium) Debussy Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun Stravinsky Suite from The Firebird Enescu’s Deșteaptă-te, române! (Wake up, Romanian!) Variations draw from the inspirational Romanian national anthem. Acclaimed violinist Jennifer Frautschi is soloist in Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium) in praise of love. Then, a Bernstein personal favorite, Debussy’s shimmering Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Stravinsky’s tour de force Suite from The Firebird closes the concert. Saturday, January 19, 2019, 6 p.m. Mozart Times Three — Fundraising Special Roberto Minczuk Music Director Anastasiya Naplekova piano Mozart Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio Mozart Piano No. 20 in d minor Mozart Symphony No. 40 Three works written by the greatest of the great in a sure-to-sell-out concert! This night of wondrous music opens with the Turkish-inspired music of the Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio. Followed by Mozart’s masterwork of drama and beauty, his Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor played by Olga Kern International Piano Competition Third-Prize Winner, Anastasiya Naplekova, who the Cincinnati Enquirer said performed with “effortless virtuosity.” Also featured is Mozart’s Symphony No. 40—an emotionally charged masterpiece.
