Meet the contributors

1. Ben Heaney – Electric Violinist & Music Health Service specialist My work involves making music in a variety of settings including performance, recording and broadcast. I give violin and general music classes across an age range spanning 100 years and this work takes me into schools, care homes and other centres for specialist education.

I have developed a unique study of the violin which I have been publishing on my own authored website since 2000. This ongoing study covers all aspects of violin - as performer, composer, educator and researcher. Part of this work has been to develop a specific technique encapsulated in a series of self-published works called Black Spot. These are used effectively in general music classes and met with great enthusiasm by students and colleagues. Master of the Queen’s Music, Dame Judith Weir recently started using Black Spot in her own work, endorsing it as “A unique and very enjoyable musical game/composition/brain trainer. Every home should have one!”

A key focus of my work is stimulating sustained engagement in music, based on the understanding that music is fundamentally good for us. In 2018 I launched my Music Health Service project with the aim of generating opportunities to take music to people who need it most.

Talk to Ben about careers in the music industry as a violinist, composer, performer, session musician etc. and the use of music in specialist dementia care and in early years learning.

2. Gráinne Devery – Army Musician Corps of Army Music Joining the British Army gives you much more than a career in music. There are opportunities for you to grow as an individual, build life-long friendships and make an impact in the world through music. Musicians and their unique talent, are an integral part of Army bands performing music but also striving to promote through a structured career. All military careers equip individuals with high quality management and leadership skills, along with a variety of personal development courses that can transform your military service.

Musically you will be a part of the UK’s largest single employer of musicians, performing music all over the world to royal, military and public audiences.

Talk to Gráinne about spending a day with an Army Band to join in rehearsals; taking part in a concert; attending masterclasses, concerts & Open Days; applying for CAMUS Academies (held in April and August).

3. Denise Clarke - Postgraduate Music Student During my time at NMPAT I took part in several different ensembles as both a cellist and flautist and also studied GCSE and A level music at school. Since leaving in 2010 I have completed both a BMus in Music and an MA in Musicology at the University of Sheffield, and in September I will be joining the University of Birmingham to study for a PhD in Musicology.

I have taken many different modules in a wide range of subjects ranging from Renaissance music to the movie musical and have completed both a 35minute recital and a 20,000 word thesis. During my studies I also taught GCSE music, and while historical music research is now my area of speciality, while at university I was a part of their music ensembles and still play now in the Kettering Symphony Orchestra under Peter Dunkley.

4. Ellie Gedney – Primary School Teacher Simon de Senlis Primary School I completed a degree in Creative and Therapeutic Arts over 3 years at the University of South Wales where I specialised in supporting pupils with SEN in a mainstream setting. During my degree I spent time in various different schools and settings across the Primary phase supporting a range of different pupils and their needs and facilitating small groups using music to support their learning. This experience led me to then complete a PGCE through the School Centred Initial Teacher Training route with the University of Buckingham and The Buckingham Partnership. I trained over a year in an EYFS (Early Years & Foundation Stage) class and took a second placement in a Year 1 class with weekly training sessions at University. This route into teaching gave me a solid understanding of what my teaching career would be like. I have now been a Primary class teacher for 4 years, starting in Year 1 and this year teaching Year 2 children. I am the music lead for my school and lead the school choir, weekly singing assemblies and am now trying to increase the number of children learning a musical instrument in our school.

5. Sophie Rose Miller – Actor/Singer Sophie is a NMPAT alumna who now works in London as an actor / singer. She studied Theatre & Performance at the University of Leeds before going on to train at The Poor School. As well as being a solo freelance performer, Sophie is also a member of the all-female a cappella quintet The Syncing Violets, who were most recently seen performing at The Other Palace theatre.

CV highlights include: playing Margaret in film ‘Tower D’ by Kent Hugo (premiered on Channel 4; Les Intergalactiques / Oregon Short Film Festival – Best Science Fiction Film nominee); ‘My Friend The Polish Girl’ a film by Ewa/Mateusz (Rotterdam and Edinburgh International Film Festival – Michael Powell Award nominee); Voices of Power at Above The Arts, West End; Puss in Kinky Boots for JED Productions at The Bridewell Theatre (as Puss); Original Workshop Cast of musicals Steep Themselves in Night (playing Ella / Fairy Queen) and A Teenage Opera (playing the leading role of Scary Auntie Mary).

Talk to Sophie about the realities of following a profession in the performing arts industry and the differences between studying theatre at university & at drama school.

6. Ray Meadham – Chief Executive Multiview Media Limited Ray studied A level music and studied trombone at Trinity College of Music leading to an early career in performing touring with bands, as a session musician and cruise liner work. He is able to advise on getting a manager, getting signed to a record company, recording albums, publishing music, touring and syncing music to computer games/films. Ray has worked in education at NMPAT, secondary, college and university levels. In terms of running a business, Ray is employing major industry people including the ex-Director of Apple, has developed business plans and communicated with investors, dealing with major companies including Apple, Amazon & Silicon Valley. He can also talk about being self-employed.

From a music technology perspective, Ray has had involvement with studio recording, using recording software including Logic, Pro Tools & Cubase, recording techniques and promotional materials.

7. Jenny Dyson – Professional Flautist Freelance Jenny is a freelance flautist working with professional orchestras in the UK such as the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Birmingham Opera Company. She was a Gold Medal finalist at the RNCM, is member of contemporary ensemble Almost Credible Music and has performed flute concertos with orchestra across the UK. Jenny teaches both privately and in schools, giving masterclasses for music services, as well as having residencies in two hospitals playing on the Intensive Care Units. She has worked with bands such as Honey Harper and recorded for artists such as Flux Pavilion as a freelance session musician. She studied at both University and Conservatoire and is happy to give advice on any aspect of the music career, lifestyle, and further study and life skills.

8. Matthew Turnock – String Instrument Repairer 23 Violins Matthew Turnock studied music at Goldsmiths College London, and repair and violin making at the London School of Furniture (now Metropolitan University) with Micheal Shakespeare. He originally intended to make a career from playing violin. However, a fit of common sense after graduating (or perhaps he just wasn’t good enough!) lead to him training and qualifying as a chartered accountant, and pursuing a career in finance, whilst keeping repair and restoration activities going in his spare time. From 2012, he has been able to spend more time in the violin business, which was rebranded and relaunched as 23 Violins.

From our workshop in Oxfordshire, 23 Violins repairs and restores string instruments, and also deals in instruments. We cover the whole of the midlands area, and offer a range of instruments for sale from beginner outfits to advanced level and professional quality instruments. All instruments that leave our workshop are fully tested and set up to ensure that they are easy and therefore enjoyable to play. At 23 Violins we are particularly keen to support students, music teachers, schools and music hubs in the purchase, maintenance and repair of their instruments. 23 Violins is a hub partner for the Northamptonshire Music Hub. 9. Tara Cruddas – Academic Marketing Assistant Royal Northern College of Music The Royal Northern College of Music is one of the 6 Royal Conservatoires in UK. We’re located in the heart of Manchester and offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in music, with around 320 teaching staff and 880 students from nearly 60 different countries. We’re also a live music venue and provide unparalleled opportunities for students to perform regularly to public audiences and to work alongside professional musicians and visiting artists.

Housing four major performance spaces, including a professionally-staffed, fully-equipped Theatre and recently refurbished Concert Hall, the College presents more than 400 concerts each year, ranging from RNCM orchestras and ensembles and large-scale opera productions, to a host of touring companies and external hires.

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated the RNCM the UK’s leading music college for research and in 2017 the College was ranked Gold in the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s first Teaching Excellence Framework. The RNCM has also been awarded two Times Higher Education Awards: Excellence and Innovation in the Arts (2015) and Outstanding International Student Strategy (2016).”

10. John Bickerdike – Director of Music Manor School Sports College John spent 10 years working as an instrumental teacher for Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust and is currently in his 10th year working as a classroom teacher at Manor School Sports College John completed a BA(Hons) and MA in Music Performance at Birmingham Conservatiore in 1998 and this year marks his 20 th year working fulltime within music education in Northamptonshire.

Throughout this time he has seen many changes in the education system within instrumental and classroom teaching. Music making within schools and music services providers face challenging times but John is convinced that talented young musicians are as plentiful as ever and they deserve every opportunity to succeed and it is our responsibility to provide this for them.

‘Classroom teaching and Instrumental teaching may contrast in environment and the skills that are required to promote learning within these areas may differ but both are vitally important to each other if we are going to ensure that our future generations are as musically creative as previous generations.’

11. Trudy A Bell – Creative Learning Director Royal & Derngate Trudy A Bell is Creative Learning Director at Royal & Derngate and is also a writer, theatre director and designer in her own right. She has extensive experience of both arts and education delivery, and is especially interested in working with young and emerging artists from a range of art forms and backgrounds, supporting them to develop a lifelong love of the arts as well as developing an artistic career. Through Royal & Derngate, Trudy leads on the Northants Cultural Education Partnership initiative with other local partner organisations including NMPAT, The Core at Corby, Fermynwoods Contemporary Art and David Ross Education Trust. She is committed to helping young people to unlock their potential through high quality arts engagement and creative mentorships.

12. David Tobin – Film and Television Composer My name is David Tobin and I’ve been writing music for film and TV for 25 years.

I have over 1,000 placements each year on TV shows worldwide and I record in studios throughout the world. Most of my work is in the sphere of Production Music through a company called Audio Network (www.audionetwork.com). I’m a regular at Abbey Road with the Royal Philharmonic and first call London studio musicians in genres from classical, through jazz and big band to rock, pop and country music.

I wrote music for my first feature film last year along with my permanent collaborator Jeff Meegan who is based in Chicago. We are known for being innovators in the world of music collaboration and are often asked to BETA software (e.g. ProTools, Sibelius) in the areas of how it performs for distance collaborators.

Our scores are about to be published by Hal Leonard and I’m personally also often asked to speak at music colleges throughout the country on topics ranging from arranging, orchestration and project logistics, which is a particular specialty.

Tim Cotter – Orchestral Librarian BBC Concert Orchestra I have been working for professional Orchestras over the past 8 years at the Philharmonia and BBC Concert Orchestra gaining a full grounding in Arts Administration working with world-class conductors and soloists throughout the UK and around the world. As an Orchestral Librarian, my main duties involve sourcing music from publishers and preparing the parts ready for rehearsals/performance, providing players with practice parts as required and ensuring the smooth running of concerts.

Talk to Tim for advice on how to get into all aspects of Arts Administration on a professional level and what it’s like to work in an Orchestra, including the different career paths available.

14. Daniel Johnson Daniel Johnson is a DJ/producer and performing artist who in addition to performing delivers a range of music workshops based around commercial, contemporary and off-the-shelf skills, techniques and instrumentation such as DJ-ing, sampling, scratching and digital music production. He also specialises in Urban style music genres and contemporary pop and is equipped with an in-depth library of music and easily able to adapt to the users' music style preference.

15. Emily Worthington – Lecturer in Music University of Huddersfield Emily Worthington is a musician and university lecturer. As a clarinetist, she performs and records all over the world with orchestras and chamber music ensembles, specialising in the music of the 18th and 19th century on historical instruments. Emily also runs her own chamber group, ‘Boxwood & Brass’, a wind ensemble who give recitals around the UK and are about to release their second CD. Emily is also a Lecturer in Music Performance and Head of Woodwind at the University of Huddersfield, who offer a broad range of degree courses in music, classical and pop music performance, and music technology. At Huddersfield, Emily teaches musicology, coaches performers, and coordinates the University concert series. Emily writes about her own research into music performance from 1750-1950 in books, magazines and academic journals. Emily has also worked as a peripatetic woodwind teacher in schools, and as a curatorial assistant and cataloguer in various libraries and archives. Emily studied music at the Univeristy of York (BA and PhD) and clarinet at the Royal College of Music (MMus).

16. Esther Mitchell – Music Therapist Thomas’s Fund I have worked as an HCPC Registered music therapist for 21 years, and have, during this time worked for the NHS, for music therapy charities and freelance. As music therapists we work in a variety of clinical areas and during my career I have worked with children and adults with learning disabilities, within child and adolescent mental health, on children’s hospital wards, with families and within paediatric palliative care. I currently work as Lead Music Therapist for Thomas’s Fund, a local music therapy charity and also work 2 days a week in local special schools.

Music therapy involves the use of music as a medium through which to work towards non-musical aims through the therapist/client relationship within the boundaries of therapy. Aims may be very specific – such as to support an individual through grief, following abuse, following adoption, or may be more general – providing a space for self-expression, working towards the development of communication, social and/or physical skills. We work using freely improvised music, produced in the here and now to meet the needs of the individual or group we are working with.

As therapists we train at post-graduate level for an MA in music therapy (2 year course), requiring a high level of musicianship, often following a music or psychology degree. Our title is protected and we are registered through the Health & Care Professions Council.

17. Adam Bushell – Chief Executive Water Bear I’m a highly experienced music industry professional, having held top management positions in music education for the past 20 years. As a professional musician of over 25 years, I’ve toured the UK and Europe supporting A-list artists, and as a session player have worked with many top musicians and producers in some of the world’s most iconic recording studios. As an educator, I have taught hundreds of drum students both privately and as a sessional tutor for many years, and written a monthly teaching column for a national drum magazine for 13 years. My roles in music education include holding Principal positions of 2 of the largest private music education providers in the UK before co-founding WaterBear 2 years ago.

Talk to Adam about music education, how to progress within music and the music industry, degree and masters programmes for musicians and creatives and portfolio careers in the music industry.

18. Tom Stoneman – Music Student and Brass Tutor Royal Birmingham Conservatoir & Services for Education I’m currently at the end of my final year of study at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, due to graduate in July, and am more than happy to discuss studying music at conservatoire level, or anything conservatoire/university related (leaving home, finding accommodation, best pubs in Birmingham ect.)

Also, throughout my study I have held a part-time job, as well as working for Services For Education (similar to NMPAT) for almost a year so feel free to come and have a chat about finding work as a student, managing student/work life, or starting out as a music teacher within a music service.

19. Chris Kirkwood – Chief Executive Lincoln Drillhall Chris has worked for 25 years in the arts sector as a Stage manager, Administrator, Producer and Chief Executive. He has worked in a range of organisations from producing theatres to touring theatre companies, arts centres to ticket agents. He is happy to talk about careers in the arts and theatre sectors and certainly to those who might want to pursue a theatre career other than acting.

Talk to Chris about pursuing careers within the theatre including sales, marketing, technical and stage management, touring.

20. Matthew Churcher – Actor/Musician After growing up playing music and spending many years as a part of NMPAT, I went onto study Acting at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama: BA Acting (Collaborative & Devised Theatre) course, graduating in 2014.

Since then I’ve primarily worked in theatre, although music has definitely played a part in my career, often being employed as an ‘Actor/Musician’ in shows such as Jane Eyre with the National Theatre and White Teeth at the Kiln theatre.

Alongside Acting, I also have several bands who write original music which is pushed alongside my acting career in order to keep both creative and pushing myself musically.

21. Kate Tanner—Schools & Colleges Liaison Manager Leeds College of Music Leeds College of Music (LCoM) is the largest specialist music conservatoire in the UK, delivering expert music education to a community of over 1500 musicians across undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses, numerous short courses and Junior LCoM for young musicians.

Situated in Leeds’ cultural quarter, LCoM is artistically ambitious, quality driven and industry-focused, placing strong emphasis on developing industry relevant, creative musicians and entrepreneurs. We offer undergraduate music degrees in Popular Music, Classical Music, Jazz, Music Production, Music Business, Film Music, Songwriting and Folk; performing arts degrees in Musical Theatre, Acting and Actor Musician, and foundation degrees in Music Production and Electronic Music Production.

LCoM prides itself on making music education accessible to all. In 2017/18, almost 50% of students were supported with bursaries during their studies, awarded to those from lower income households and further selected based on academic and musical ability.

The conservatoire also hosts a year-round schedule of events and performances, covering a broad variety of musical genres. Our annual festival, Sounds Like THIS, presents an ambitious programme of cutting-edge and ground-breaking music, taking place across the city of Leeds each year.

22. James Gorman – Professional Drummer and Percussionist James started playing the side drum in the Northampton Scout Band from the age of 9 and later entered the NMPAT county system under the instruction of current head of percussion Tim Green.

Starting off in the County Training Orchestra and progressing into the County Youth Brass Band, County Youth Concert Band, County Youth Orchestra and NYPE, James became the first percussionist the win the Nigel Cobb Fellowship Award and went on to audition for music colleges, choosing to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

Under expert tutelage on Timpani from LSO legend Kurt Hans Goedicke (Star Wars Timpanist) and Martin Gobson (RSNO – Lord of the Rings), Snare Drum from Jim Kirkpatrick and Simon Lowdon, Marimba from Jasmin Kolberg and Eric Summat, Latin American from Dave Hassell and Birger Sulsbruck and Orchestral Percussion from Grammy Award winner and principal percussionist of the New York Philarmonic Orchestra Chris Lamb. James is able to enjoy a varied career as a freelance musician playing in a range of settings such as orchestra, operas, recordings and musicals.

It was the latter which caught James’ imagination. He is now known as a theatre drummer and percussionist and has since played some of the biggest shows in the UK and West End including: Evita; The Sound of Music; Jesus Christ Superstar; The Wizard of Oz and many more.

James is currently playing percussion for “On Your Feet!” the Gloria Estephan musical which is running at the London Coliseum in the West End. Talk to James about studying at a conservatoire and forging a successful freelance career as a performer.

23. Rich Sharp Royal Marines Band Service I joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 1998 as Trombonist after graduating from Salford University, gaining a BA(Hons) in Band Musicianship. After passing out of training at the Royal Marines School of Music I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world including America, Australia, Belgium, China, Iceland, Ukraine, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, France and Germany. As part of my promotions with the Royal Marines I have undertaken and passed the Royal Marines Bandmasters course in 2014 and gained a LRSM in Wind Band Direction and an AMusTCL in Music Theory. I also enjoy working with youth music organisations and have completed a Level 5 in Coaching and Mentoring course to help with this.

24. John Cunningham & Stephen Rees Bangor University John Cunningham is a Reader in Musicology, Director of Research and Deputy Head of School (Research). He joined the School of Music at Bangor in 2011. He has almost 20 years’ experience teaching and working in higher education. Before coming to Bangor he taught at University College Dublin and the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama, and held research posts at the University of Limerick, the University of Leeds, and at University College Dublin. John is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the Purcell Society Committee. John teaches on topics from Medieval to modern; his published research primarily focusses on secular music in Britain and Ireland, c.1600–1870.

Stephen Rees is a Lecturer in Musicology and Director of Undergraduate Studies (Music). He was appointed as a lecturer in the School of Music in 1988.

He teaches a wide range of historical subjects from the late middle ages to the twentieth century, as well as harmony and counterpoint, music analysis, music technology, electroacoustic techniques, and traditional fiddle styles. His research centres on traditional music in Wales Folk music revivals in Wales and Europe European polyphonic song and its sources in the late fifteenth century Welsh-language music theory. He has a particular interest in the traditional music of Wales and has performed professionally throughout the UK, Europe, and North and South America. Stephen co-founded Crasdant, Wales’ leading instrumental band, formed to create a canon of Welsh Instruments that would coincide with that of their Celtic relatives.

25. Andy Kirkwood – Deputy Head, Woodwind Teacher Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust Andy has many years’ experience as a clarinet teacher, general woodwind tutor, conductor, coach, performer, workshop leader and project deliverer. He joined the staff in Northamptonshire in September 1999 as a woodwind tutor, becoming the head of the Nene Valley Performing Arts Centre in 2003, and in 2009 became one of the Deputy Heads of NMPAT, with responsibility for the woodwind department.

Andy has worked in Infant, Primary, Lower, Middle, Upper and Secondary schools throughout Northamptonshire, both independent and state, delivering one-to-one, small group and mixed-instrument lessons; he has experience in conducting school, centre and county ensembles, delivering whole class projects and whole school recitals. Andy was the product of Leicestershire County Music Service before going to music college and teacher training at university and would have loved to have had an opportunity such as the NMPAT careers day when he was at school so he is delighted to be here today to try and provide help and information for people.

What to expect...

Andy will talk of his own experiences of further education and qualifying to become a teacher, focusing on peripatetic teaching over classroom. His interactive session will cover the skills and attributes a good teacher would have, and the differences in council run music services, independent music trusts, and music education hubs.

2.15 in Room 14 Unlock Potential: Preparing for an Arts Career Now! Delivered by Trudy Bell of the Royal and Derngate Focusing on the huge career options in the creative industries and the opportunities within Northamptonshire for young people to get involved in different art forms, Trudy A Bell Creative Learning Director at Royal & Derngate will highlight how both the theatre and Northants Cultural Education Partnership’s UNLOCK initiative can help young people to get a head start by unlocking career skills and experiences at a young age.

2.45 in Room 18 Studying at Bangor University Delivered by John Cunningham of Bangor University As the outreach coordinator at Bangor University, John will talk about the range of courses on offer in the music and media school, enabled by the broad range of industry experience across the staff.

3.15 in Room 14 Studying at a Conservatoire Delivered by Tara Cruddas of the Royal Northern College of Music Joined by a current student at the Royal Northern College of Music, Tara Cruddas will offer a brief overview of what studying at a conservatoire is like, the undergraduate programmes & performance opportunities available and making an application. This session will be interactive, with opportunities to discuss and share any questions you may have.

3.45 in Room 18 The music industry today Delivered by Adam Bushell of Water Bear Adam will discuss the current music industry – how it has changed and where it may be going – degree options for musicians and creatives and forming a portfolio career in the music industry. He will also talk about Water Bear, which he founded 2 years ago, and the background to it.

4.15 in Room 7 Building a portfolio career Delivered by Emily Worthington of the University of Huddersfield Emily will talk through the various areas in which she works - performing, researching, lecturing, etc - and how she balances each element in order to sustain a successful ‘portfolio’ career.

4.15 in Room 14 Turning your passion for music into a profession Delivered by Corporal Gráinne Devery of the Corps of Army Music Corporal Gráinne Devery gives a description of her career in Army Music including: entry routes; training; career progression opportunities; sports and outdoor pursuits and travel opportunities. This talk will be engaging and interactive, with questions to find out who you are, and what your musical interests are.
