T

he City’s year-long 125th anniversary party continues, and the entire community is invited to partake in a bevy of activities and celebrations all summer long!

On tap is a star-spangled Concerts in the Park series starting Friday,

June 20 and running through the end of August. Next, the City joins forces with “Paso 4th” volunteers to offer an old-fashioned 4th of July Celebration in City Park featuring a parade, music, food, and culminating with – “yes” – fireworks once again courtesy of local sponsors.

A “Fizz, Boom, READ!” themed summer reading program for youngsters extends the party to the Paso Robles Library as children earn prizes for reading and enjoy a variety of activities with a scientific flare.

Similar programs will be offered for teen and adult readers.

Making a splash at Municipal Pool will be our stellar aquatics staff, offering lessons and open swim to keep cool on those sunny Paso Robles afternoons.

K-9 Kids: Learn to Be a Dog’s Best Friend

The “eyes have it” and this program will prove it! Find out how our eyes can fool us into seeing movement by creating an old fashioned toy called a thaumatrope, dissecting an animal eyeball, doing experiments to learn how vision helps us move, and learning how eye glasses work using lasers. This eye-popping program about the science of sight is presented by Dr. Douglas Major, O.D. and Nancy Major, vision therapist.

This hands-on program will focus on dog safety and responsible pet ownership.

Young children will learn how to approach a dog and care for their canine friend.

Older participants will take part in search and rescue exercises with a trained rescue dog, meet a guide dog puppy in training, and try their skills at dog first aid. This program is presented by dog trainer and behavior expert Linda Hardy of Good Shepherd Dog Obedience and her furry and non-furry friends.

Join marine-life educator Carolyn Skinder from the San Simeon Coastal Discovery Center and NOAA Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to learn how to identify local marine mammals and their amazing adaptations to the sea. Touch real fur pelts, skulls, and bones, and play interactive games that will help you understand how marine mammals communicate.

You’ll also learn what to do if you see a sick or injured seal, sea lion or sea otter, and what to do to keep these animals healthy.

Rocketeers, bring your water rocket from the July 31 craft day and get ready to watch it soar! Using water pressure, these rockets can reach heights of up to 60 feet. Take turns watching, predicting - and being amazed - at this simple science demonstration that brings to life the principles of inertia, gravity, air resistance. Learn about Newton’s laws of motion, acceleration, and more.

Free assessments are available June 17 - 20, from 11:00 a.m.– 12:00 p.m. to assist you!

Class Descriptions: Parent & Me (6 M – 3Y) Class stresses safety, accident prevention, and fun. For parents who want to teach their kids how to swim. Swim diapers required.

Level 1: Water Exploration (3Y+) For student who is fearful or not adjusted to class or water environment.

Level 2: Primary Skills (Basic & Super) (3Y+) Basic 2 For the student who is adjusted to water and class environment & can submerge face, float with support, glide & move arms.

Super 2 For children who have demonstrated the skills of Basic 2 but are not yet ready for the endurance and distances required of Level 3. Children must be able to independently swim in water above their head.

Volunteer Junior Swim Instructors who assist in swim lessons get a FREE Public Swim Pass! Requirements for participation: pre-register, commit to assisting one or more swim sessions, and attend training course.

Participants must wear red, black or blue one-piece bathing suit, be able to swim at Level 4 or higher, follow directions, and be comfortable working with young children. Registrants will swim during the training .

This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely.

Children take approximately 20 to 32 lessons to acquire and consistently demonstrate these skills.

Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays. Reusable swim diaper may be required. Since lessons are individualized, each child progresses at his or her own pace.

Duration of lessons depends on age, temperament, and coordination.

Should a child complete a program in less time, a credit towards maintenance classes will be issued.

Graduates may sign up for Fundays.

Recreation

These year-round swim classes in our indoor pool are designed to promote water safety for infants and young children. Parent participation may be required. Registration and supply fees are payable to the instructor.

Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swim-sequence.

They learn to swim - full immersion and independently - and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water.

Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while protecting your child from aquatic accidents.

Melinda Martin’s photographs are not your standard macro, landscapes, or portraits. Her eclectic and unusual collection represents numerous styles and photo processes. Martin has been a photographer for over 15 years and has received awards from the Paso Robles Art Association and the Mid-State Fair. She is currently the chairperson for the Photo Guild of the Paso Robles Art Association.

Kathy Wetzel’s love of nature and food inspires her to paint in watercolor, pastel, oil, and mixed media. The simple shapes and colors found in the world of cooking and cuisine are her muse.

“Literary Elements” is the theme of the Paso Robles City Library’s 7th annual adult program. Participants in this year’s science-themed program will be encouraged to experiment with different types of materials found throughout the Library and work through the “periodic table” to earn prizes for each level of reading

After Diane August was diagnosed with a gluten-intolerance in 2010, she tried to find a natural way to deal with the subsequent dietary restrictions.

Combining her lifelong love of cooking, with her new-found passion for creating delicious, easy-to-make recipes, she developed an array of great tasting recipes. Her doctor sampled her creations and encouraged her to publish a cookbook to assist other patients who were having a hard time adjusting to the changes required in their diet.

Even though Diane was surprised by his suggestion, she nonetheless decided to follow his advice and the result was a user-friendly cookbook called THE FREE COOKBOOK! Diane hopes that anyone with glutenintolerance, or those who want to cut artificial sweeteners and sugar out of their diet, will find her recipes tasting like wonderfully-familiar comfort foods that

Class covers the basic exercises necessary to have a well-mannered family companion for life. Kathy will cover how to correct common problem behaviors from the dog’s viewpoint.

Tai Chi is a fitness exercise practiced for its many health benefits, focusing on relaxation, posture, and breathing techniques.

This gentle exercise calms the nervous system, improves balance, circulation, and strength. Funding and Charitable Status: In 1981, an ENDOWMENT FUND was established by the Senior Advisory Committee to the City of Paso Robles. Contributions, endowments, and memorials are encouraged to ensure the future of our services and programs, and may be tax deductible. Contributions are held in a trustee account by the City of Paso Robles and will be utilized solely for senior programs.

How You Can Help: Donors contribute in a number of ways, including cash, as well as other assets. Planned gifts can also be made, which include wills and trusts, making the endowment fund the beneficiary in life insurance policies, and charitable remainder trusts, which can continue to generate income for the donor during their lifetime. RSVP is a federally-funded nonprofit program of Senior Volunteer Services.

They match the interests of persons age 55 and older with rewarding part-time volunteer opportunities for community service at hospitals and local nonprofit organizations or government agencies. There is no cost to join. For more information, call 544-8740.

This committee provides information regarding recreational areas such as parks and playgrounds; provides interpretation of community recreation programs; and makes policy suggestions for consideration. For more information, call Lynda Holt, 237-3987.

Youth, in grades 9 - 12, serve as a liaison between the youth/teen community and the City Council.

Commissioners become familiar with city departments; suggest and review policies, programs, and services relating to youth/teen issues. Members can expect to dedicate at least three hours per month to this commission. For more information, call Lynda Holt, 237-3987.

*Members serve 1 - 2 year terms commencing July 1 of each year. Applications for new positions are due early spring.

Activity Enrollment A minimum number of participants is required to hold programs. The Department of Library and Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel a program that does not meet this minimum and participants will receive a full refund or credit. It is highly recommended that you pre-register as early as possible to avoid programs being cancelled due to lack of enrollment.

Activity Refund & Cancellation For ongoing classes, participants may drop the class after they attend the first meeting and receive a partial refund, but they must file for a refund before the second class. No refunds will be issued after the second class. For Summer Swim Program or classes only meeting once, you must file for a refund at least five business days before the class starts. If the participant cancels, he/she must contact the Centennial Park Registration Office, and will be subject to a minimum $7 service charge. Refunds for cash registrations will be mailed from the City Finance Department approximately two weeks after the request is received. Refunds on checks will be issued after the check has cleared the bank, which is generally within 30 days of receipt. In order to avoid the $7 fee, a participant may choose to keep the money on account to be used for another class.

Scholarships Scholarships for all types of recreation programs, including camps, classes, and sports programs, are available for income-qualifying seniors and youth. Call 237-3988 or stop by Centennial Park Registration Office for more information. www.prcity.com/recreation

We have a commingled, or single stream, recycling system. We allow customers to recycle without sorting. This program is easy, efficient, and maximizes materials accepted for recycling. The recyclables are transported to a material recovery facility (MRF) where they are sorted into highquality feedstock streams.

InstructIons • All recyclables must be placed in the container with the lid completely closed.

• Only use the recycling container provided by us.

• No Hazardous Materials such as oil, pesticides, paint or cleaners.

No putrescible waste like food scraps, diapers, etc.

contaMInatIon can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.
