From the President Dear Community Members and Visitors, I am proud to represent the community as President of the Chamber for another year. Looking back on 2014 your Chamber members have accomplished a lot to help make King City a better place to live and work. We have just finished the fifth year of the Farmers’ Market, which gets better every year. It’s a great place to pick up some farm fresh produce and visit with friends and neighbors. The Christmas Parade is always a great way to kick off the holiday season and we look forward to another successful event this year. The great new signs that highlight the Great Way to the Pinnacles and give directions to the Chamber office and Town Square have already brought many more people through town. The Chamber’s many mixers, ribbon cuttings and events throughout the year are well attended and we encourage you to attend and join in the fun. I’m looking forward to working with our new board members and benefiting from their fresh perspective and new ideas to help build a stronger team. We look forward to working with the service organizations in town and the new City Council to continue to make King City an even stronger community.

Ron Childers Chamber President

From the President Elect

Dear Community Members and Visitors, With 2014 in the rear-view mirror, it is time to look forward to the New Year’s excitement and uncertainty that changes often bring. Since serving on the King City Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture Board of Directors beginning in 2011, my understanding and true appreciation for this town and its citizens have grown exponentially with each passing year. Despite a challenging economy, businesses continue to develop and flourish with the support of community members and local organizations like this one. I am honored to serve another year as President Elect. My focus this year is to change things up and come up with new innovative ideas to keep things fresh and vibrant in our community. I look forward to hear any- Erin King President Elect one’s thoughts or supportive ideas. Thank you all who support the King City Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture. It is because of you, that the City of King is a wonderful place where businesses and the agriculture world can thrive. 12 • 2015 King City Chamber Directory • A Publication of South County Newspapers

Office of the Mayor Hi, Welcome to the City of King. Whether you’re a resident or visitor I hope that you’re able to enjoy all that we have to offer. We are blessed with great weather year-round, clean air, and plenty of recreational and social activities. Personally I think we have the best of all worlds. There are many great things to do in town. Plus, a short drive brings you to Monterey, Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo. As much as I enjoy visiting those areas, I’m equally as happy to see them in my rear-view mirror as I head back to my home of King City. A partial list of what this small city has to offer: • 9-hole public golf course • Beautiful county park complete with camping/RV hook-ups and the Monterey County Ag & Rural Life Museum • An airport, home to the Tutima Academy of Aviation Safety • Parks & Recreation Center with pool and racquetball court • Tennis Courts • Numerous sports fields • Movie theater • Farmers Market from May through October • Highly active service & social clubs • Fairgrounds with facilities that feature numerous year-round activities, anchored by the annual Salinas Valley Fair • Mee Memorial Hospital

• • • •

Sol Treasures Art & Cultural Events Center Fourth of July annual celebration Performing arts events at historic Robert Stanton Theater Much, much more.

Once in a while I overhear someone saying there’s nothing to do in King City. They simply must not be looking. In addition to the above, just outside of town we enjoy leisure activities at Pinnacles National Park, Lake Nacimiento, Lake San Antonio, San Antonio Mission, Soledad Mission, and Fort Hunter Liggett Military Base. I could go on, but you get the point. I am enthusiastic to serve as the mayor of King City since 2010. As with any city we have our issues. But we have a wonderful core of people and I continue to be optimistic about the future. I encourage you to get involved and enjoy all that the city has to offer. And if you’re ever looking for an idea of something to do, just give me a call.... Thanks. Robert Cullen, Mayor City of King

Samantha Bengtson/South County Newspapers Gerry Ramirez, awarded Friend of the Community, was surprised by the Chamber of Commerce committee at her home.

Samantha Bengtson/South County Newspapers Robert Cullen was chosen as the winner for Citizen of the Year and poses with the Chamber of Commerce committee.

Samantha Bengtson/South County Newspapers Sol Treasures was surprised by the Chamber committee at Sol Treasures. BY SAMANTHA BENGTSON The Chamber of Commerce has selected the Citizen of the Year, Friend to the Community, and Business of the Year. The Chamber of Commerce has been accepting nominations since September and closed the nomination period on Nov. 14. This year’s winners include Gerry Ramirez, who won “Friend to the Community.” Robert Cullen was chosen as the “Citizen of the Year” and the recipient for “Business of the Year” is Sol Treasures. “We get together and form a committee and we look over every single nomination that we receive,” said Cindi Mora, chamber manager. “Every person that’s a part of the committee reads it.” Mora said the process is long and difficult and after the committee is finished choosing the recipient in each category the committee gets together and surprises all the winners. “Spontaneously and without them knowing is how we like to catch them,” said Mora.

The requirements for the business of the year award has to have a principal place of business in King City (areas include Lockwood, Jolon, Pine Canyon, Bitterwater, San Lucas, or San Ardo) where King City is the main area of trade. The business must serve the community in more than one way and must have the business in the community for at least three years. The citizen of the year is required to be a resident of King City, Lockwood, Jolon, Pine Canyon, Bitterwater, San Lucas or San Ardo for at least three years. The citizen of the year must also contribute to the community in more than one aspect and must have business in the area for at least three years. Friend of the Community is an organization or nonprofit, business or community member who is an active friend of the community. The Big Event will occur on March 14 and will be held in the re-modernized Orradre Building at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds.
