THIS UTSA-OWNED BUILDING AUGMENTS AN EXISTING STRUCTURE TO ACCOMMODATE STUDENT RESIDENCY FOR THE DOWNTOWN CAMPUS, WHILE INTEGRATING COMMUNITY GATHERINGS AND SHOPPING EXPERIENCES INTO A UNIFIED DESIGN. CENTERED AROUND A LARGE EVENT PLAZA, THE PROJECT ENHANCES CONNECTIVITY THROUGH STRATEGIC PROGRAM PLACEMENTS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MARKET SQUARE IS ADJACENT TO PUBLIC GATHERING SPACES, WHILE A SEPARATE RESIDENTIAL ENTRANCE ON THE SOUTH END PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH PRIVACY AND DIRECT ACCESS ACROSS FROM THE BEXAR COUNTY COURTHOUSE.
THE ORIGINAL STEEL STRUCTURE IS EXPANDED WITH REINFORCED CONCRETE TO SUPPORT NEW BUILDINGS, FEATURING A DESIGN THAT REMOVES MASSING STRATEGICALLY TO CREATE ADDITIONAL OUTDOOR SPACES. THIS INCLUDES A ROW OF STUDENT BALCONIES ON EACH DORMITORY LEVEL, OFFERING VIEWS OF THE PLAZA AND THE EASTERN HORIZON. THE DESIGN BLENDS TRADITIONAL DURABLE MATERIALS IN PUBLIC AREAS WITH CORRUGATED STEEL FACADES, PAINTED IN UTSA ORANGE, FOR DORMITORIES AND MEETING SPACES. THIS COMBINATION ENSURES EASY MAINTENANCE AND A VISUALLY STRIKING IDENTITY.
