DYNAMIC LEARNING COMMUNITY

National Louis University (NLU) continues to grow and thrive while increasing access to higher education for learners from all backgrounds. The 2021-22 academic year provided many examples of how our faculty and staff create a dynamic learning environment for each other, our students and the wider community.
As you read this report, you will see how our various programs inspire a community committed to lifelong learning. Whether our learners are working towards degrees or credentials, they have access to faculty members committed to utilizing innovative teaching methods, exceptional learning technology, and services designed to let them focus on their studies. NLU also offers extraordinary flexibility for students, including in-person and online learning, and the ability to develop relationships with their cohort while meeting in person as part of our new low-residency programs.
We also take a special look at Accelerate U, NLU’s “job-first” higher education concept. This innovative model enables students to begin their new career in three to seven months, while earning up to 30 college credits during their training. Then, after they begin earning a livable wage, they can apply those credits towards additional credentials or a degree at NLU. This new program furthers our commitment to ensure that higher education is accessible to all who seek it. Accelerate U also provides affordable and accessible job training at a time when many Americans question the value of higher education.
Our commitment to helping all students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices was acknowledged last summer when the Washington Monthly ranked NLU 4th for social mobility on its National University Rankings and 2nd in the Midwest. These rankings reflect the importance of social mobility and preparing students for careers which serve their country. Overall, NLU was ranked 18th among national universities, surpassing many larger, more well-known institutions.
We look forward to building on our success with a greater emphasis on ensuring that education leads to increasing equity and reducing the wealth gap. Research by the Metropolitan Planning Council and Urban Institute estimating the Chicago region could see $4.4 billion in additional income each year and a 30% decrease in homicide if the region were less segregated specifically underscores the need for increased higher education opportunities for all residents. We are committed to being part of the solution for all residents of our hometown to thrive.
This is certainly a time when one of NLU’s central mandates — “to serve those who serve”— resonates powerfully. Thanks to the efforts of our faculty and staff, and the generosity of our donors, our community is in a strong position to continue living out our values of innovation, access, excellence and equity in educating the next generation of leaders who will transform their communities and positively impact the direction of our country.

“You can only learn so much through staring at a computer or reading a book. Actually doing something, it logs in your brain. You have this muscle memory of doing something and it’s unforgettable.“
— ISAIAH REDMOND, ‘22 ACCELERATE U
“The best thing about National Louis University is that you can find plenty of resources. Whatever you’re struggling with, they always have the solution. Food, housing, counseling, technical issues, career insecurities, learning support, study tables — in a word, everything.“
— SINDI CEKREZI, ’25 Undergraduate College“
National Louis University’s values embody those in line with my career goals. I plan to use my education towards uplifting others and providing services that will improve their chances of reaching their full potential, regardless of where they stand in life and what circumstances they’re looking to overcome.“
— LILY SARFARAZ ‘24 College of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences“I know that the work I do, such as conducting research, using student voice for their assignments, creating real application assignments with students, etc., will create positive outcomes for thousands of students and their families and communities. I am impacting the future through my work. I also really love my team here at NLU.“
— DR. GLORIA McDANIEL-HALL, ED.D. Assistant Professor, National College of Education“It is rewarding to work for a university which uses data and analyzes support structures to create a community and connect students to our thriving campus culture across each of our departments. In the coming year we will further elevate our approaches by incorporating student voice into these structures and practices to create a best-inclass online student experience across the institution.“
— BETTYJO BOUCHEY, MBA, ED.D. Vice Provost, Digital Strategy & Operations“National Louis University continues to be a pathbreaking place. I’m fired up to work at NLU because of our university-wide commitment to access and equity, our deep commitment to continuous learning and experimentation, and the incredible people working every day to build a first of its kind “job-first higher education” model. It’s an honor work at NLU.“
— THACKSTON LUNDY, MPP Vice President, Workforce PathwaysEvery member of our community has a role to play in student success and the success of this institution.
For some, the financial and time commitments of a four-year college degree are too much.
National Louis University (NLU) launched Accelerate U in July 2021 to help learners become economically stabilized by providing a rapid pathway to fulltime, in-demand jobs and careers. Through this innovative “job-first” higher education model, students can begin their new career in three to seven months. We began our first track — Registered Medical Assistant — in response to employer needs and the high number of job openings in this sector. Each medical assistant learner completes six months of online and in-person training, followed by a one-month field-based externship. Upon completion, Accelerate U graduates have preferential application status with partner healthcare employers to launch their careers, and up to 30 credit hours to apply towards other credentials or a bachelor’s degree.
The Registered Medical Assistant pathway is the first of several anticipated career tracks that NLU plans to offer over the long term. In early 2023, Accelerate U launched its second track — Registered Behavior Technician — for those who wish to work with individuals on the autism spectrum or with developmental disabilities. Future tracks will include information technology and business, as well as additional opportunities in healthcare.

Damaris Townes graduated from North Lawndale College Prep High School (NLCP) in 2018. She had long aspired to be in the medical field as her mother used to work at Lawndale Christian Community Center, but Damaris struggled to find her path into the profession. During the pandemic, she initially received an offer from another medical assistant training program. She started to reflect on her dreams, how they felt more accessible, but she wanted to make sure she made the best decision for her next step.
She learned about Accelerate U through her counselors at NLCP. She knew that Accelerate U was the right fit, applied immediately and was thrilled to be accepted into the program.
With several of her cohort peers, Damaris completed her externship hours at Lawndale Christian Community Center at the same time as her coursework. Everyone at the community center loved her energy and enthusiasm: she was proactive in getting things done, eager to learn more, and always asked many questions. When she finished her externship, she had already interviewed with her manager and was offered a full-time position less than a week later.
“
I thought my plans of working in the medical field were not going to happen. Now look at me! Working in a dream job and doing exactly what I want to do. I feel good at the end of the day that I helped various people that came into the
That is exactly what I wanted.

National Louis University has an extensive history in early childhood education, starting with our founding in 1886 as a college to train women to teach young children in communities across Chicago. The vision of our founder, Elizabeth Harrison, resulted in the education of Chicago’s youngest citizens, the beginnings of the modern American kindergarten movement, and the establishment of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).
Today, our founder’s pioneering vision continues in NLU’s ongoing commitment to preparing new generations of early childhood educators and leaders to maximize the potential of young children and their families in Illinois.
Every year, NLU serves more than 1,300 early childhood teachers and leaders, providing scalable solutions in credentials and degrees to expand the skills and knowledge of a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population. Through the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership, we annually reach 3,000 center administrators, family child care providers, school principals and more across Illinois and beyond, through a wide range of leadership academies, trainings and conferences, both in-person and online. The McCormick Center also conducts evaluations, assessments and professional learning on behalf of several public and private entities to ensure that early childhood programs continue to improve their quality in service of young children and their families.
More recently, NLU has been tasked with helping the State of Illinois develop an online Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework for the early childhood workforce. This framework will enable learners to demonstrate their early childhood knowledge through prior education and/or professional experience, helping them to complete their credentials or degrees faster, advance in their careers, and secure higher compensation, while simultaneously elevating the quality of the early education programs in which they work.
We also know that Illinois — like many states across the country — continues to struggle with a shortage of highly-qualified early childhood teachers and leaders, disproportionately impacting children and communities of color. To help address this ongoing challenge, and advance the field, NLU intends to launch the Institute for Early Childhood at National Louis University. The Institute will leverage our intellectual capital and assets across NLU’s Undergraduate College, National College of Education and the McCormick Center, with three areas of focus: early childhood leadership; early childhood workforce development; and applied research and policy engagement. This will enable NLU to ensure that Illinois has early childhood teachers and leaders with the skills, knowledge and resources to deliver high-quality programs, while also building and leveraging a robust research portfolio to inform public and administrative policies that benefit young children and their families, particularly those who are from historically marginalized communities.
“The human brain develops more in the first few years of life than at any other time. I am so proud of our work at NLU to elevate early childhood education (ECE) because we know that high-quality early childhood experiences lead to a lifetime of success and well-being.
Preparing the best ECE teachers and leaders is my life’s work and I am thrilled that I get to do it at an institution like NLU that places such a high value on access and equity.
— LISA DOWNEY, ED.D. Associate Dean, Undergraduate Educator PreparationPreparing our students to effectively begin or progress in their careers has been the mission of NLU since its founding. Our Career Bridge team ensures that graduates leave NLU with practical, real-world experience and valuable connections in their industry.
Our work to increase resources for students took significant steps during the 2021-2022 academic year. In addition to adding two staff positions and building out a new interactive work space on the Chicago campus for workshops, in-person interviews and career fairs in our Career Bridge department, students benefited from:
• Suit scholarships provided to 91 graduating seniors to acquire professional clothing;
• Relationships with more than 100 new employers which led to internships or post-graduate employment;
• Opportunities to participate in 18 career fairs which were attended by a total of 1150 students and 152 employers; and
• Placement at more than 200 internship sites.
National Louis University ended the 2022 fiscal year in solid financial condition after another year of positive operating results. Highlights included the introduction of the Accelerate U program that provides short-term credentials to students and the undergraduate teacher preparation programs saw growth of 12% in new students.
• NLU served approximately 10,100 students in both 2022 and 2021, a remarkable accomplishment in a period in which most higher education institutions nationally have been experiencing enrollment declines.
• The University introduced its new Accelerate U program that provides short-term credentials to students looking for an alternative track to quickly earn an education and employment.
• The University benefitted from strength in its undergraduate teacher preparation programs that saw growth of 12% in new students last year.
The University’s statements of financial position and activities as of and for the year ended June 30, 2022 are below:
• Increased cash and investments to $65 million at June 30, 2022.
• Maintained an unrestricted liquidity ratio of 1.7, about double of what is required in the University’s debt covenants.
• Weathered volatile markets and returned +24% and -11% in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Each year was better than its internal investment return benchmarks that are based on blend of equity, debt and alternative indices.
• Operating margins of a strong $8 million.
• Tuition and fees are the University’s primary revenue source.
• Occupancy and utilities expenses declined by about $2.2 million, reflecting NLU’s intentional reduced physical facility footprint.
• NLU benefitted from funding from the federal government’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). Most of this funding provided financial assistance to our highest-needs students who were impacted adversely by the pandemic.
