BUGSY MALONE PROGRAMME 2025 (v3)

Page 1

Directors note

Bugsy Malone is one of those rare gems in musical theatre that combines slapstick humour, catchy tunes, and an irresistible sense of fun. Written by Paul Williams and Alan Parker in 1976 but set in the 1920s, it has been both a stage production and later a film.

If you are my generation (Mr. Marks showing his age), you’ll remember the film that featured a young Jodie Foster, before she went on to become a huge Hollywood star and Oscar-Winner and Scott Baio. For this production we want to provide the audience with what, for some, will be a new viewing experience. I hope those of you in the ‘cabaret-style’ seating enjoy experiencing the action at close quarters.

It has been a pleasure working with this large team of actors, dancers, singers, musicians, technicians, designers and makers. I am sure that you will thoroughly enjoy their hard work in putting this together. Huge thanks to Tania Chew and Hafeez Hassan for coming in to choreograph the show.

Musical Director

This is the 3rd time that I’ve been involved in a production of Bugsy Malone, but the first time I’ve ever done it quite like this to create an immersive experience for the audience. It’s been so much fun watching it come to life from Mr Mark’s initial concept, followed by auditions and into weekly rehearsals. All of the cast have been so much fun to work with and (now that they know the lyrics) they’re singing their hearts out. Of course our house band are amazing (a mix of students and staff) on stage lifting the whole show to new levels and providing fabulous musical entertainment throughout.

A shout to out to our amazing visiting choreographers for their work with our dancers, our wonderful set, costumes and props team under the direction of Judith Marks, thank you to Chris Dromgoole for the set design and build, and of course to our wonderful supportive team of tech crew under Trevor’s direction who have pulled a really complicated show together.

Choreographers

“We’ve had a wonderful experience creating the choreographies for this Bugsy Malone Production. Musical theatre is near and dear to our hearts and the last few months have been both enjoyable and enriching, as we’ve watched the dancers have fun and grow through the process. It’s been our privilege to work with such a talented group of youngsters.

Thank you NLCS (Singapore) for having us!”

Setting 1929NewYork

The air in the district is thick with tension. Dandy Dan's gang of hoodlums are running rampant, terrorising the streets and exterminating anyone who gets in their way, armed with their new weapon—the splurge guns. Across town, Fat Sam Stacetto, the owner of the Grand Slam Speakeasy, is struggling to keep his empire intact.

Fat Sam, desperate for help, reaches out to the smooth-talking Bugsy Malone, a city slicker who has a way with words and an even slicker way of getting out of tight spots. But Bugsy’s focus is on Blousey Brown, a new singer who just arrived in town.

With Dandy Dan’s gang wiping out nearly all of Fat Sam’s crew, and worse yet, destroying his entire operation, from the sarsaparilla to the grocery rackets, he needs someone with brains, someone known for getting out of tight spots.

Fat Sam has only one hope left. Bugsy.
