KS4INTRODUCTION

ThisisanexcitingtimeinyoureducationatNLCSJeju AsyoubeginYear10,youwillbestudying courses that will lead to external assessment and IGCSE certificates Youhavehadthechanceto make some choices about the subjects you study for the next twoyearsyouhavebeguntotake ownershipofyoureducation,andhence,yourfuturejourneytouniversityandbeyond.

AsIwritethiswehavejustreceivedourbesteveriGCSEresultsforthe2020 22cohort,wearevery pleased with the achievements of our students, and I think this reflects well on the ethos of academicexcellenceatNLCSJeju.

Last year we initiated an academic support program for our boarding students and we are especially proud of the success this achieved in the examinations For this cohort Boarding studentsachievedourbesteverresultsandwere20%morelikelytoachieveatleast9A*/Agrades intheiriGCSEsthantheirpeers.Wewillbecontinuingwiththissuccessfulprogramthisyearsothat allstudentshavethesupporttheyneedtofullyachievetheirpotential.

Our KS4 curriculum here at NLCS Jeju does not end with the examined subjects,webelieveour educational program provides the best possible preparation for the next stage inyouracademic career, we provide a huge range of broad enrichment experiences, and social development opportunities We are launching both a new Critical Thinking course and a renewed Personal Social Development course, these are designed to prepareourstudentstoberesilientscholars, academically honest and independent thinkers Thecriticalthinkingcourseespeciallyislooking aheadtoourstudentsfuturedevelopmentneedsforsuccessinIBDiplomaPrograminyear12and 13.

EXAMBOARDS&GRADES

Most students within the British education system follow a two year course in Years 10 and 11 based on General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) courses IGCSE is the international versionofaGCSEassessment Itismoreexaminationbasedandquestionsaremorelikelytohave an international context. At the end of Year 11, you will take IGCSE exams in a broad range of subjects.EachsubjectisawardedanindividualgradeoneitheranA* Gor9 1scale,withgradesof A* Cor9 6commonlyacceptedaspassinggrades.

NearlyallofoursubjectsatIGCSElevelfollowaCambridgeExaminationBoardspecification.Where this isnʼt thecase,therearealwaysspecificreasonsthattheHeadofDepartmenthasselectedan alternative exam board There isnogradingadvantageovercompletingoneexamboardʼscourse over anotherʼs, but we feel that the Cambridge Examinations provide a rigorous and reliable assessmentofthestudentʼsknowledgeandunderstanding,aswellasprovidingthemwithasound basisforgoingontostudytheIBDPinYear12andYear13.

Mathematics during Years 10 and 11 at NLCS Jeju strikes a balance between mastering new concepts and skills vital for the IGCSE examinations, and developing studentsʼ problem solving instincts, abilitytomodelrealworldproblemsandanintroductiontowritingpapersonextended mathematicalproblems,allofwhichlookforwardtotheIBdiploma

At NLCS Jeju we firmly believe Mathematics is a pastime to enjoy and full of challenges to be relished. The exciting content of the IGCSE courses and the fascinating problems that can arise fromit,allowourteacherstopasstheirownpassionformathematicsontotheirstudents.

In 2022 / 23 we are replacing CIE Mathematics IGCSE (0580) with CIE International Mathematics IGCSE (0607) The new course will help students develop skills in mathematical modelling and investigation,andincreasetheroleofapplyingmathswithtechnologythroughtheuseofgraphic displaycalculators Theseelementswillfurtherenhanceourstudentslongtermpreparationforthe IBmathscourses.

The content of our pre Diploma Critical Thinking course is grounded in real worldglobalissues, suchastheUNSustainableDevelopmentGoals,humanrightsandcurrentaffairs.Firstly,students will be introduced to a range of practical strategies that will help them inquire and question effectively, for example the question formulation technique as taught by Harvard University. In addition, embedded in the course are diverse ʻthinking routinesʼ that helpourstudentsdevelop theircapacitytolinkconceptsacrossdisciplines Asthecourseprogresses,studentswillexplorea diverse range of thought such as how ʻloaded languageʼ can be used to manipulate our understanding of the world, whythereisoenadissonancebetweenmediacoverageandreality andprogressontoexamining thenatureofcertainty.
